One pick that was talked about since the day it happened was Poles choosing Wright over Carter. Make no mistake, Carter is a beast of a DT who helped Philly dominate Mahomes.
But I feel it’s worth discussing after watching Wright do his part in basically destroying the Eagles defensive line en route to likely a Pro Bowl season and Top 5 in All-Pro voting that it’s time we re-visit this pick and has resulted in at worst a win-win for both sides, with the potential Wright peaks as a more dominant RT for his position compared to Carter as a DT.

I love Wright. I don’t think about Carter ever.
Jalen getting suspended earlier this year kinda helped the case. He has maturity issues still and could be a net negative for the team. Meanwhile Wright is a borderline All Pro with no known character issues.
It was always stupid and only hyperfocused on by the “grass is always greener” crowd.
Suggesting we spend even LESS resources on our OL (before this past offseason) was always a ridiculous idea, and on top of that, Carter has/had character issues that possibly have only been held in check by a championship roster/coaching.
I mean the Eagles got a Super Bowl with the Carter pick, so that’s an A+. Very happy with Wright though.
It was always a dumb comparison. There was never a moment where anyone should have looked at this Bears roster and thought “you know what they need? One less good OL.”
That said, Jalen Carter is an elite DT and I could pull up half-a-dozen reps on Friday where he absolutely shit on Bears OL including some on Wright.
Wright is a borderline pro bowler, but he’s starting to get way overhyped. There’s levels to this game and he’s not on an All Pro level or even close to it. He loses a lot more reps than those guys do.
This was never a serious discussion. Bears needed OT help extremely badly and Wright was an exceptional prospect with no off field baggage
I commented this on another post after the win. It would be nice to have an upgrade at DT, but Carter was basically a non factor while wright is having a huge impact on our o line
I’m not a Poles fan. But that trade was never something I criticized. While I fully believe that Carter talent wise would be better, he needs to be in a winning environment and strong culture. Otherwise, he is a distraction. The Bears were never that under Flus and everyone saw that. Carter under Flus would either miss a ton of games, be a distraction or get traded. And honestly, it’s harder to find a good OT than finding a good DT. Carter is better than good but I was more upset with the return (I think it was a 4th). Would have preferred a 2nd or a high future.
It was always a bad faith argument. He was one of the lone bright spots on our OL pretty much since he was drafted plus everyone was yelling yearly about drafting OL rnd 1 before and after his pick. We were always gonna have a young QB (Fields or not) and you want a good OL more than a good DL for a young QB.
That all being said he had to be at least a solid tackle since we essentially took him over Carter, and he’s emerging as much more than that.
I have openly talked shit about Darnell Wright because he was our most penalized lineman and often single handedly killed drives.
That said, he cleaned it up from the start of the year and has been absolutely dominant. He is mauling people.
Both teams got good players at positions of need. I don’t really think this needs to be dissected further.
Sure, it’d be great to have one of the league’s best defensive tackles on this roster. But that’d mean they wouldn’t have one of the best right tackles in the league. So whatever, this conversation was tired before and it’s useless now
Carter is a good fit for the Eagles. I think it would have been disaster to have him on the dysfunctional Bears teams of the past couple years. Wright is our guy.
Nah, it’s JSN/Fashanu versus Wright/Odunze
Poles was out on carter, but I don’t think anyone can argue against poles choices in the 1st round. Above is the only other scenario that made sense.
Carter and Wright were both positions of need for the bears but I was always happy with the Wright pick. Good tackles are even more difficult to find imo and we’re seeing how beneficial it has been to have him for the o line this year.

Eagles already had an established identity and were gearing up for a Super Bowl run, so Carters antics was worth it. Trying to build a team with him here would’ve been a train wreck, so both teams did the right thing.
They’re both incredible, massively talented players. Philly got good one, we got a good one. I’m perfectly happy with Wright because he fills an important role and seems like he fits in just fine with the culture.
There were concerns about Carter being toxic that were probably overblown to some extent, but he’s doing well for them too.
we should both be happy.
My only bears jersey so far is his
Investing in the offensive line is almost never sexy, but it adds up over time. Great teams remain great because they never stop investing in O Line. It impacts every single aspect of your team.
I don’t think anyone who watched Caleb get killed last season will tell you that we made a mistake with a stud olinemen.
Its worked out well for both teams. We dont need to keep dwelling on it. I cant imagine where the Bears would be without Wright at RT. The Eagles got a pro bowl DT. Win win.
I was a big proponent of getting Carter but it’s hard to argue with results. Wright was the better choice and probably difficult to make considering the hype on Carter.
Philly has gotten too greedy with DLineman, now their OLine is paying the price
The fans complaining about this trade are the same idiots who simultaneously howl about a lack of investment on the offensive line.
We needed offensive help much more than a prospective locker room cancer who was great on the DL. We had literally zero players on the OL that deserved to have significant playing time when Wright was drafted.
I would rather have Carter? But don’t really care about this particular discussion it’s weird tbh
Comparison is the thief of joy
