[Passan] Mets among the teams in the mix – Passan notes that the 32-year-old slugger is the “bellwether of the class” and is expected to get the years and AAV he desires. Schwarber may be the likeliest of the big free agents to sign first with the Winter Meetings looming next week.

  1. I see the vision, I guess. Sign Schwarber as the every day DH to make up for the loss of Pete’s power and bring in someone else to improve defense at 1B. It makes sense if they plan to move on from Pete regardless of what his contract demands are. I imagine it would also correspond with Vientos and McNeil trades.

  2. Whichever team signs Schwarber is going to hate the contract by the end of it.

  3. Don’t want him, he’s strikeout machine who’s about to turn 33. Citi Field is also a bigger park than CBP, so his power would be less of a factor here. He’s not a good fit for us.

I’m also a fan of leaving the DH open and not signing a full time DH. It helps giving guys a day off in the field and letting them DH occasionally, especially considering Lindor and Semien aren’t young.

  4. I know Schwarber can crush the ball and that would be great for our DH spot.

It’s a little weird though because in recent years, he has struggled playing vs the Mets so I only see him play like poop at Citi Field.

I’m not opposed but depends on the contract numbers.

  5. All the people saying no absolutely not need to reevaluate the way this game is played right now. This dude hits home runs as a bonus to the fact he’s clutch as shit. To say no we don’t need that is asinine. Best option? No maybe not. But it would still be a fantastic pickup. Stop saying stupid shit

  6. Absolutely Yes to sign to play alongside Pete. Lindor/Soto/Alonso/Schwarber would be awesome.

Absolutely No if the vision is he will replace Pete.

  7. I feel like the Phillies will really fuck up if they don’t re-sign him. They have Turner and Harper through ’33 and ’31 respectively, so I think it’s too soon for them to begin the slow tear down/rebuild. Plus he hits very well in their ballpark. Plus he seems like one of the pillars of the clubhouse there.

  8. Why the hell would we sign Schwarber to a big contract but let Pete walk? I’d much rather have Alonso than this guy. We already have enough power hitters who strike out a lot and play below-average defense.

  9. I’m skeptical that they are doing anything more than checking in. He doesn’t seem to me like a Stearns-type player. He likes athletic-body guys who are good defensively. It’s hard to resist Schwarber’s power, of course.

  10. This is tricky for me.

I’d rather have Pete over Schwarber. But I also want Pete to come back as a full-time DH. And if you’re going to do that, there’s a very good case for signing Schwarber instead.

  11. I’d rather spend the money on pitching. Not the best year for free agent aces though. Any Japanese pitchers worth the risk?

  12. We just traded Nimmo to free up the DH spot long term for Soto. This doesn’t make sense as he can’t play first

  13. Does anyone on this string believe Alonso is coming back as our 1B option with him being arguably the worst fielder in the MLB at his position? Hopefully the answer is “No”. So then who do you want as our DH? The guy who just hit 56 HRs and had a 4.7 war or Pete’s 3.4? Neither of them can run to save their lives so KS is the answer.

  14. Would rather have Pete but it’s also smart to raise the price for the Phillies to keep him.

  15. If he signed with the Mets, it would absolutely make them a better ball club and you’d be happy to have him.

That said, this is probably just Boras posturing to get Philly to cough up more money – everyone relax.

  16. If they sign him I’m going to have to delete alot of comments i’ve made about him during game threads.

  17. We should probably be in the mix of everyone till a few bigger signings are locked in.

Also, our “platooned DH” was really not great last year so I wouldn’t mind a true big bat there.

  18. Agree on Vientos. Hard to imagine how MV will be on this roster unless Pete is gone. Markie is a career DH effective immediately!

  19. Mets will be in the mix on any big market player, being as big as they are they will likely at least check in on everyone

  20. Imagine a middle of the order of Soto, Pete, Schwarber.

Make it happen Uncle Steve 🙏

  21. i can’t imagine hamstringing our team defense for the amount of years that Schwarber would want from his last big FA deal of his career.
having him at DH necessitates leaving Soto in the outfield for however long he’s here and i’m not sure how to justify that.

  22. Signing him hurts the Phil’s just as much as it helps the Mets. Itd be a massive signing

  23. 100% for the sole reason of maybe finally we can turn the tables on all our division rivals that they’ve been doing to is for years.

  24. Only sigh him if Alonso goes, still think they should prioritise pitching and either Bellinger/Tucker

  25. I can see Schwarber hitting 40+ HR for the next 3-4 years…. Our lineup would be crazy with Alonso hitting cleanup behind him
