This is fine if you actually do that and let the draft come to you. If the jets end up trading up for a Qb that defeats this whole narrative.
Jets just don’t know how to develop a QB or bring in a competent coaching staff. It’s like this every year. I’m just rolling with the hits.
Agreed. People act like if we hadn’t won so many games in bad seasons we’d be a good team rn. That’s not true. Nick Bosa over Quinnen, Trevor Lawrence over ZW (we’d had had to go 0-16 to get him too), and Joe Alt over Fashanu would not suddenly make us a good team.
Don’t forget about Tom Brady
What this post argues more than anything is that coaching and personnel matter more than just the QB itself.
The guys listed in the image came into orgs with a great coaching staff and solid pieces to work with that allowed them time to develop as a player.
Peyton Manning had Edgerrin James, Marvin Harrison, and Tony Dungy in the early days.
Brady had Belichick and a rock solid defense.
The list goes on.
I feel better now–thanks.
We drafted qbs high. Let’s eat bagels
Dak is not a franchise quarterback
Lamar slipping was a product of old white men.
The Jets have also had plenty of chances to develop early round QBs and have shown that they have no idea how to do that. They shouldn’t be allowed to draft another 1st round Qb until they make the playoffs.
Nothing is guaranteed with any pick anywhere in the draft. The common denominator between these picks is that they went to much more stable franchises that had most of the pieces in place to develop potentially more flawed QB prospects; is that what we are?
This is also 5 total examples of successful QBs taken outside of the top 9 picks since 2012, which is an extremely small amount of hits. If we only look at hits, I could just as easily point to Burrow being 1st, Herbert being 6th, Mayfield being 1st, Darnold being 3rd, Allen being 7th, Williams being 1st, Daniels being 2nd, Maye being 3rd, Stroud being 2nd, Goff being 1st, etc and make the case that if you want a good starting QB in the NFL you’re more likely to find one at the very top of the draft. Seven of the top ten QBs in EPA this season were top-9 picks in their drafts. This is pretty pointless.
“You’ll be able to find the QB” well then why the fuck haven’t we been able to for the last 20 years if it’s that easy
The only guarantee is pressure to play early for an under fire HC as the panacea for all the teams ills.
Only to fail have the HC sacked and a new guy coming in who doesn’t like the QB because he wasn’t their choice.
QB should be one of the last piece of the puzzle not the first.
Let’s not forget….
Drew Brees in round 2.
Joe Montana in round 3.
Tom Brady in round 6.
And shall we harken back to Johnny Unitas…
Drafted in the 9th round.
Played zero games as a rookie
Got released.
Colts picked him up.
And he’s the archetype for every QB over the last 70 years
I’m cool with any personal opinion, but if freely choosing to give a ‘relax’ type PSA to the world on any subject… you should have to put up $100 in escrow just in case you’re wrong
This liberal arts ‘people need to understand’ unverified confidence has to have consequences
y’all do this every year. give it a rest my god
What’s the Super Bowl / HOF rate on the first QB picked in any draft versus the second and third QBs picked in any draft?
We all know that if the jets got the first pick, whoever they pick would burn out. Think of all the quarterbacks in the hall of fame. None of them would be there if they were drafted by the jets.
It doesn’t matter if the Jets take a QB anywhere between 1st and 255th. They can’t develop QBs ever.
Could use the one whose name we do not speak as Jets fans as the peak example of the pick doesn’t matter. But yeah use these guys.
LOLOLOLOLOL lemme pick a small # of exceptions to try and prove the rule
The people in charge matter way, way more than the pick. If Mougey, Glenn, and everyone working under them are good at their jobs, they will rebuild successfully. If not, the pick doesn’t matter. They could pick the next Brady or Mahomes and completely mess it up. No reason to Jedi mind trick yourself into being enraged by your favorite team winning games.
It literally doesn’t matter where the Jets pick if the organization is a dysfunctional shit show which is exactly the case for the past 14 of 15 years
We’ve been trying to tank for a decade. At this point I’m tired of rooting for losing. Let’s win games, try to build an actual culture, and hope we have an environment that a young qb can step in and thrive. Whether thats the 1st pick or the 45th pick
This is a stupid premise.
Teams sucking at drafting doesn’t mean picks don’t matter and it isn’t better to have as early a pick as possible.
Do you want to rely on other teams being worse at this than the Jets and someone falling to us?? For example, the Chiefs only got Mahomes because the Bears were idiots and traded up to get Trubisky. The Jets need as early a pick as possible.
I would just be more comfortable if I was confident in AG. If we had an offensive minded coach that puts his QB in the best position to succeed? Yes.
I also don’t think we need to draft a QB in the first. Figure out the rest of the roster. I will say that it’s much harder to find a QB after the first round than most think. Russ and Dak were drafted 13 and 9 years ago.
There’s Purdy and Hurts but after that it’s tough to even find quality backups that weren’t first round picks.
Reclamation projects like Darnold, Jones, Baker and Goff hit at a much higher rate than guys drafted on day 2-3.
There’s a much better chance Mac Jones, Tua, Bryce Young or Kyler will be franchise QBs again than random guys drafted over the next 3 years.
A-fucking-men
It’s not just about whether you pick the right QB or not, it’s about being in the best position to pick one without having to give up a bunch of draft capital. Yeah, one QB falls lower in the first…maybe one falls to the second etc.
It’s still a much better situation to be in when you have a better draft pick. You gave a few examples. Here are some examples of the alternative where teams used valuable draft capital to move up to select a future bust.
Bears moved up to draft Mitch Trubisky over Mahomes and D. Watson
Jags moved up 6 spots to draft Blaine Gabbert
Jets did so for Darnold
Arizona did for Rosen
Denver did for Paxton Lynch and Tebow
Browns did for Tebow
Washington to for Griffin
The draft is all about who has the leverage. Nothing is guaranteed, and there is luck involved, but the better draft pick we have the better odds are in our favor and the more flexibility and leverage we have.
This is a shit draft for QBs.
People need to get a grip. This is a multi year rebuild.
Engstrand was involved with making Goff work. Get a retread and you have 3 firsts in ’27.
Next year draft somebody or take Simpson or Sellers low as per their actual draft position.
