[Baggarly] Giants not inclined to spend what it takes to sign Tatsuya Imai or any SP for over 100M

  1. What’s even the point of having Webb on the most team friendly pitcher contract in baseball if he’s just going to be by himself. This franchise is in love with mediocrity.

  2. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE DO NOT BE REAL ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME???????? ALL THIS BS TALK ABOUT LOVING THE JAPANESE MARKET AND YOU FINALLY GET THE PERFECT FIT AND YOU WANNA BE CLOWNS ABOUT IT??? Unbelievable

  3. The only thing I will say is that CJ cried poor last year and we all lost our minds, before they added Adames and Devers. So maybe this is a strategy? If so, I have no idea how this helps.

  4. Baggarly has been pretty accurate these last few months with his reporting. If this is correct then it’s just further yielding the playing field to other clubs that are willing to spend. A big reason why the bums won the WS this year is because they signed 79 starting pitchers, including multiple big deals. I understand that long term pitcher deals are risky, but if we actually want to compete we need to take on risks. Ownership has the money to spend more, they just rather spend it on real estate.

  5. Dodgers are like the Wagyu / Filet Mignons of the market; we’re Chuck Eye — trying to cook something spectacular out of the cheapest possible cuts.

Price gouging everything and charging premium prices for a subpar product.

At least lower the concession prices so I can get drunk and forget about how much I spent on two tickets, drinks, food and transportation.

  6. My copium is that we said we were cutting payroll last year right before signing Adames

  7. Paywall. [Archive link](https://archive.is/Z2dq2) for anyone interested in reading the full articles

It’s an interesting read. The key phrase that stuck out was that they’re only planning on signing one starting pitcher, which is odd to me considering how big of a chasm they have in rotation quality after Webb and Ray.

  8. We have $60 million in cap space. This guy seemed to express interest in signing with us. It’d be one thing if the front office didn’t think he’d be a good fit, but it’s another thing entirely to say “We just don’t want to give out big contracts.”

Pathetic. If you don’t want to invest in the team, just sell. Just another year of us having to watch the Dodgers in the playoffs

  9. Well we know where this going to take place we are out off the list of signing him or any good players

  10. Tony Vitello is cool and all, but I really didn’t need him if that’s gonna make the Giants not spend. We don’t need a motivational speaker, we need PLAYERS!!

  11. I imagine the Johnny Cuerto,Jeff Samardzjia and Barry Zito deals still weigh in people’s minds. They all produced, and in Zito’s case at precisely the right time, but none lived up to the expectations around those contracts.

  12. Baggarly carrying water for ownership like he’s done for the last 20 years. It’s pathetic the amount of excuses the writers give for this cheap fucking team. If any of them were worth anything they’d be calling them out on the nonstop “Oh we’re going to spend” headfake they’ve been doing for years. This team will never be good until Greg Johnson sells the team, which is never going to happen.

  13. A pitching and defense forward team who has a very clear window of contention built upon an aging core of offensive players is refusing to spend money on the best starting pitcher available who has publicly expressed a desire to beat your hated rival. All while being a top 5 revenue team in a top 5 media market that will soon have ZERO competition (fuck John Fisher).

I hate this ownership group with a passion. Been a season ticket holder for 25 years and I’m getting pretty close to pulling out. They clearly are not prioritizing winning with this ho hum attitude to improving this roster in meaningful ways to keep up with the rest of the West

  14. There’s a chance this is a smokescreen since, like many have said, last year we did end up getting Adames after saying we’d cut payroll and added Devers mid-season. It’d be really disappointing if we didn’t get at least one high-end arm to go with Webb and Ray next season, and this seemed like a near-perfect opportunity to kill 2 birds with 1 stone: getting that 3rd arm and getting a major Japanese player. We’ve been basically shut out from that talent pool for decades; it would’ve been nice for Imai to be our re-entry back into it. I have to think that if we do play it conservative this offseason, it’s ownership balking at the idea of increasing payroll with the looming possibility of a lockout after next season. Though if that’s the case, we’re set for more around .500 for the near foreseeable future.

  15. I think this media cycle is cloak and daggers. Why would we announce that were heavily interested in any big money pitchers? The owners need to help out the front office and coaching staff with $$$. If they dont were most likely looking at .500 or below.

  16. I read the title and first few paragraphs and thought “Ok, if they don’t think he’s good enough for $100M then I can live with that”

I read the rest of the article and was instantly turned off by Bagg’s attempt to justify why ownership doesn’t want to spend money. As Baggs said, the Giants are now worth $4bn compared to the $100M the ownership spent 33 years ago. During that time, they have pocketed a shit ton of money and would likely pocket significantly more if ownership would spend closer to the CBT instead of settling to be a .500 team.

  17. Stop going to the ballpark and paying $21 for a bud light and that cheap owner will have to spend to bring people into the ballpark to pay $21 for a bud light.

  18. Ahh I see we’re trying reverse psychology now. Don’t worry, I’m still getting my hopes up.

  19. So thats for sure it then? We’re just doomed to be a .500 team? No chance this is wrong? AHHHH

  20. I bought tickets a few days ago on black Friday, and for what it’s worth, I just submitted the feedback survey and indicated my displeasure with this news that I won’t be spending additional money on tickets this year if ownership indicates that they are unwilling to spend to put a competitive team on the field.

  21. The private equity angle is also interesting. Much more likely to count the beans when the likes of Sixth Street are involved. Of course, winning championships translates to more revenue, but who cares about building the brand?

  22. So what’s the point in trading for Devers and getting Adames if they’re going to handcuff themselves on SP?

  23. If this is true, good luck to us contending. I think we’re too stuck on how the team won in 10-12-14, and not what teams have been succeeding with in recent years. Plus, we’d very much need to improve our drafting and player development to repeat that prior success. There’s no Posey on this roster. Webb is great but he’s not quite what prime Bum managed to be, our Lincecum and Cain before him. We need some real star talent and that doesn’t come cheap.

  24. I’m so tired of these clowns. Every time we hear Greg Johnson or Larry Baer talk its always about how well mission rock is doing and how excited they are about mission rock.

Here we have Imai, basically telling everyone he wants to be a Giant. His media quotes have been a bigger hit for the fans than most of this entire season has been. A young, talented arm you can pair with Webb as rotation anchors, getting your feet into the Japanese market which they’ve said multiple time they’ve wanted to do, and he wants to fucking Beat LA I literally cannot write a better slam dunk than this.

But no, they seem to think that it’s just as good to get three years of overpaying German Marquez or some shit. We are never beating the perpetually .500 allegations

  25. If this guy goes to the Dodgers because no one wants to pay him 100 million they will 3 peat.

  26. These cheap motherfuckers lol get ready for another year of .500 ball. Just don’t get how they can be so content with a decade of mediocrity, they need to understand that they can longer survive on selling nostalgia to the fanbase. If you want to win, you need to spend.

  27. Fuck the ownership. They are content with being just good enough to hopefully luck into things but not do what’s necessary to build a winner.

    Such bullshit. Fans deserve better.

  28. The era of mediocrity will continue and clearly a lot of fans are fine with it since attendance continues to increase.

If Posey is against dealing with Boras and opt-out clauses then he’s failing in his role. Opt-out clauses are part of the landscape now so you either adapt or die. If you want to avoid or not speak with the agent who engages with 50% of the top free agents every year then you need to find a way to suck it up and talk to him.

  29. Don’t spend a dime on the Giants in 2026, everyone…. Don’t go to games, don’t buy Jerseys, nothing….. The Giants are playing checkers, the Dodgers are playing chess…… Don’t waste your money until the organizations decides they want to be serious.

  30. Fock this. Wasn’t planning on going to many games except when Imai would pitch. Guess I have extra budget now. We need new ownership badly. Joykill is real.
