Recapping all the moves made during Thanksgiving break! (Dylan Cease to Blue Jays, Helsley to O’s)
Welcome to the Monday postth Thanksgiving installment of Hot Stove with Harold Reynolds, Lauren Shiad, Matt Vascersian. We got a lot to get to today as there was some uh free agent news to report on. But how was your How was your holiday? Oh, it was great, man. Stayed home. A lot of people came over. Did you cook? No, I didn’t. You did not. Did you carve? I did carve. How’d it go? And I got the great tip from uh Yeah. What was the name of it? That’s right. From from Nicole Johnson. So, I learned how to do that properly. How about you? You went Oh, you went back to California. Your dad turned 90. Yeah. Yeah. Do you stay with the family when you go home? Where did you Well, we uh we had a VBO cuz we had a big group, right? We’re five family and we got Okie do. Sounds fancy. Well, you know, online you can rent out these nice houses on VBO. And I’m a sucker for a nicely done photograph. What wasn’t quite what was represented was a little more rustic than luxury, but it was okay. Lauren, can you see him in a rustic house? You can see me. He has to only do the five stars. He’s like, “There were a couple three stars.” And no, no, no. When you check into He’s a bougie. Do not pass. No, no, no. I’m not I’m not talking about bougie. I’m talking about when you check into a VBO, you should not have to clean it when you check in. Oh my. You should not have to vacuum up the dust bunnies in every corner and the cobwebs off of every light. God forbid you bang the pillows together and the cloud of smoke appears. Like, I got no chance in this place. Don’t use the word rustic. I’m out. I got allergies. So, but it was fine. It was still good. Yeah, it was it was fine. Wood burning fireplace made it all made it all good. Um, we got some news to report, y’all. While you were watching something else. Oh gosh, what a big deal this is. And a really good rotation got even better. This is a high-end allar. That’s right. We’re talking about Dylan CE who signed for a reported 7-year $210 million deal with the Toronto Blue Jays coming off a an inexplicably weird statistical season in his final year with the Padres’s. The deal is reportedly to include some deferred money, so that changes the AAV. But this is one of the biggest names on the free agent starters market and he is reportedly headed to Toronto. Your reaction? Well, first off, I was like, “Wow, that’s a lot of money.” 210 million for Dylan CE. But if you look in deep into Dylan CE, and I’m sure that’s what the the Blue Jays did. He’s healthy. This guy posts up every start for the last five years. You may not be happy with the outings, but man, he gives you numbers. This guy’s a gamer. Give me the ball, I’m going after you. Mhm. And I think mechanically his mechanics are so simple that he’s going to stay healthy for a lot of years to come. And watching what that pitching staff’s been able to do, the the coaching staff at their pitching in Toronto, I think they looked this said, “Hey, we can we can get a lot out of him.” But he’s it’s a nice fit. Well, and give me a healthy pitcher, I’ll take him. I’m with you on that. I would say this, too, on the healthy pitcher angle. That was Corbin Burns. Yes. And he Right. He missed a year with surgery. That was Bronson a royal until it wasn’t. At some point, they come calling for you. Yeah, the health bugs come calling for you. But to your point, he’s been healthy. Good track record. He his expected RA last year was a full point lower than how he finished. So, it would indicate he pitched in some bad luck. And he had other teams that were hot on his tail, too. I know folks around the Cubs are disappointed that he didn’t land there because there was some thought that he was a perfect fit with that team. Here’s a question for you. What does this do, this deal, these numbers do for the rest of the starters market out there? Still a lot of names on that market. Yeah. Does it does it bump everybody up or does it matter? It matters. I think it brings the floor up a little bit. The ceiling guys are going to get the ceiling numbers, but 210 is a big number. Yeah. Yeah, that’s a big number. Yeah. So, you know, there’s going to be a couple guys out there arguing about it, but we’ll see. But it definitely sets the market and I think it sets us up where we’ve been headed towards the winter meetings. A lot of guys signing and what you need is a big number like a player like this and now everybody can comp it. Right. Right. And go from there. Start. Here’s the next question for you. Put that rotation up there, guys. Is this the best starting rotation in the American League? Is that really a question? I think it’s a fair question, Tony. I mean, there’s other good ones, but for me, this is pretty tough to beat in the American League. Look, when you can Yeah. I mean, you start looking at guys, what I look at, Matt, where’s your four and five star, right? I mean, those are ones and twos someplace else. Yeah. This This is the best rotation in the American League on paper for me. And I know when the Yankees get everybody healthy again, when Garrett if they get healthy, that’s the other thing. We keep saying when the Yankees get healthy, how do you know? I’m going to assume they get healthy. But assuming best case scenario for everybody, I still think that’s the best rotation in the American League. It’s pretty good. only because of what you saw in the World Series with you Savage. You Savage and we watched Gossman go to another level. We watched all their pitching go to a different place to get them I shouldn’t just say the World Series to the playoffs. Right. Right. You know, because the way they perform late in the year makes you go, it’s pretty good stuff. So, so what’s next for Toronto? I mean, they have some unfinished business. If you if you’re among those that think that Bo Bette has I do have one other thing on the pitching. Oh, all right. Okay. That concerns me. I have the Verduchi effect. We’ll come back to this notable Blue Jays under team control here in a second. I It’s a lot of guaranteed money for a lot of years. Yeah, they still haven’t collected a dime’s worth of value on the Santandere deal. Yeah, I want to come back to that for real quick with the pitching. Okay, they pitched deep into the postseason for the first time. How will they bounce back? That’s the Verduchi thing he always talks about, right? So, that’s very important. I think that we’ll see. Will they be able to bounce back having ps a long year and then turn around now we got WBC and we got everything else coming at you real quick. So how do they bounce back? Some people have suggested that uh if it’s not Bo Bashette that’s the next thing on the itinerary that it’s adding a back of the bullpen piece right Jeff Hoffman signed that three for 33. Can we see that board the the money again guys? Cuz I kind of jumped that. Here it is. All right. Where you going Matt? Well, I mean, none of none of this uh none of this has anything to do with trying to beef up the bullpen. And they came a breath away from winning a World Series kind of without uh you know that that that reliable 67 89 formula. Himenez makes 106. Well, that’s the deal they traded for. Wow. But again, like Santandere five for 90. They got a deal on Kirk though. Deal on Kirk. But the Santan, they paid a lot for Santandere, a lot for uh for Bereios. And look, this team’s this team is ready to win for the next few years. We’re not talking about taking steps backwards. So, if you’re already in that deep payroll-wise, you you almost have to bring Bo Bashette back and you almost have to overpay. That’s that’s just going to be how it goes. That’s how I feel. You don’t think? I don’t know. You don’t think he goes back? I think what’s I don’t know. I really I kind of say no. The only reason he goes back is the loyalty to the team and he’s not gonna take a discount for that. No. Hell no. No. So, I think what’s happened now with Bo, him coming back into in the playoffs in the World Series and performing on that bad leg made some money for him and he played second base. I think it made money. I think it held money that was going to be there. Well, we’ll talk to Shai Deviti a little bit more about that when we have him on the program. Tough to sign him. Yeah, that causes some hard feelings. Oh, there may be some hard feelings there, Gary. Uh, let’s get to the next signing that we learned of over the weekend. And this doesffect affect what we’re talking about here with the Blue Jays. Ryan Hley, two for 28 to go to Baltimore. Yeah. Now, I’ve got questions here. One of which we’re not going to have an answer for. The other one we will have an answer for by the end of the season. Here’s my first question. Two for 28. Is the fact that he struggled as a Met after the trade last year at the deadline. Is that baked into this number? In other words, would it have been different if he hadn’t been traded, stayed in St. Louis, and put up back-to back great years with the Cardinals? Uh, I don’t think so because I that’s a that’s 14 million too close. You know, it was floated around that he was going to be a starter and the Tigers had talked to him about that. 14 million for a closer is really where the market is at. I mean, you look at Diaz, you look at Chapman, you look at these guys are always out there one year at a time trying to earn their money. And so, I I think he landed where he probably should have. Okay, here’s the next question. What does two for 28 do for the rest of the relievers market? because there are, depending on how you view it, either four or five legitimate bonafide closers on this year’s market. So, what does this do for Devin Williams? What does this do for Diaz? Does this raise the floor? Does this raise the ceiling on those deals, or was this kind of in an envelope? I think Diaz, he threw off to the side. He’s been consistent. He’s been the best and he’s done this for a little bit of time and he’s healthy. You know, he got back from that knee injury. I think that saved him in his arm, right? Devin Williams stepped back just like Helley stepped back. I think they’re in that same same area. You can’t sit there and say you are a premier closer, okay? Cuz that’s not what you did. And then there’s Robert Suarez. There’s Pete Fairbanks. I mean, look, if you if you need a ninth inning guy, this is pretty good market for you. It’s good market because now now the market has kind of been set with Helsley two for 28. Yeah. And we’ll see what that does for the rest of the money. So, by the end of the off season, we’ll know what this contract did, if any, toward the other four. Yeah. We’re never going to know if, in fact, last year’s wonky times with the Mets affected his his overall value. We’re never going to know that. No, but I I Yeah, we won’t know it. Yeah. I I I like the idea that somebody might be able to go get a deal on somebody like And that’s what uh Ken Rosenthal is reporting that Pete Fairbanks might be close on a discounted deal. I’ll take him on a discounted deal. How about him to Toronto? Him and Hoffman. No closers in the ninth. All right, Lauren. Sorry. I I I took too long getting to you. I took too long getting to you. You two for 28. Oh, so my deal. You got an arm on me. There you go. Well, it was so fun.

Lets go Blue Jays…!!! 2026 will be the year of the Toronto Blue Jays…!!!
rent out these nice houses on V R B O? 😂 Loll he doesn’t know how to say it right
4:39 Not the best rotation in the AL but definitely the best in the AL east. I’d still give Seattle and Detroit the edge with starting pitching. just too many guys here that are inconsistent.
Why are people worried about the money? Chris and Max are gone and that's $37 millions right there. Great move for Toronto especially when Pete Walker can get his hands on him
