STOPGAP: Minnesota Wild Trade Talk—Why Adding Kiefer Sherwood WON’T Solve SCORING Needs #mnwild
On today’s episode of Lockdown Wild, there is nothing wrong with Bill Garren looking to improve the roster, but if he’s going to do so, he should look to fill an Hey, this is Matt Baldy and you’re listening to Locked on Wild. On today’s episode of Lockdown Wild, we will discuss the latest injury news which features yet another Minnesota Wild player that will be out of the lineup for the next couple of days. We will also take a look at some recent trade rumors that have a uh bottom six forward linked to the Minnesota Wild from the Vancouver Conucks and why that is uh this is not the upgrade we’re looking for. And we’ll finish by taking a look at a big west coast swing for the Minnesota Wild to start off the month of December and how critical it is that the Wilds continue to bank points as the season unfolds. My name is Seth Toppel, host of Lockown Wild, credentialed media member covering the team since the uh 2021 2022 season and even before that uh bringing you credentialed media access and insider interests into the Minnesota Wild. We’re joined by Alex Mleti here for today’s episode. Alex, unfortunately because of the Buffalo game, no victory. Mleti Monday here for today, but uh still arguably the game of the year against the Colorado Avalanche. And how very Minnesota for the Wilds to beat the AS lose to the Sabres. The classic trap game, right? And just all the the goofiness that came with that Buffalo game. Zukarelloo basically throwing a puck into his own net. That was Bizaro World. The goal before that uh kind of just went winning off a skate or a leg. It kind of looked like Yeah, just kind of a really bizarre game because I thought the Wild played pretty well in that one. And yeah, just the highs and lows of the weekend for sure. And it continues as we uh swing into the month of December. Now, uh, we got word that Danilurov will not be playing in at least the game against Edmonton. Sounds like he is going to make the trip, but will not play in that Tuesday game. Uh, Marco Rossi has started to skate on his own, but it seems like he is still a little ways off. Maybe by the end of the trip, but most likely once the trip is done. Uh, so the beat just continues for this Wild team. It’s one player in, another player out. Uh, at least we got Vladimir Terosenko back. The most polarizing guy on the team, right? Just uh, yeah, let’s throw him out there in a shootout off coming off an injury where he had no business uh, being in that shootout. I don’t care historically how he’s done in shootouts. If you’re coming off an injury like that, there’s plenty of other players. you could have, you know, Marcus Johansson out there who’s a lot lot more skilled, you know, somebody that’s actually healthy. So, yeah, that that was a bizarro move by Hines. And, you know, on the the year front, that’s a disappointment because it feels like he was really starting to come into his own in the top six. And I I know the numbers not really jumping off the page, but uh he was making an impact defensively and just looked like somebody that was really starting to uh just look like he was comfortable at the NHL level and now he’s got to go on the uh on the shelf for at least a couple of games. Yeah, really disappointing. You nailed it. And uh you know playing with Carl Capriov helps a lot too. You know he’s learning from a fellow Russian and uh yeah he just yeah it stinks for him but you also want him to not have to play through an injury to get get back to being 100% and you know continue to you know go off that momentum that he’s had you know over the past you know couple weeks here. And uh yeah, but it’s it’s nice to see, right? Because you look at all these other teams with first round draft picks really producing and um you know, he’s not on the stat sheet, but you know, he looks he looks the part for sure. And uh it looks like it’ll be Ryan Hartman back in that top six role, which he has done before, but again, they’re going to need Hartman to contribute in that spot. Uh they’re going to need him to kind of fill that role as opposed to just kind of keeping the seat warm. So, time will tell if he’s able to do that. But, uh it just it’s another injury in a long line of injuries that has already been a long line for the Minnesota Wild this year. Yeah, lots of adversity and the the goalies are keeping him in all these games, right? And uh it’s amazing, you know, we we’ve joked that they can’t go a game without, you know, somebody getting hurt and then another another guy coming back in for that person that gets hurt. And uh really key spots as well. And so, you know, kudos to, you know, Yesper and uh and, you know, Gus for for holding holding down the ship and, you know, beating a team like Colorado who had what they had shut out, you know, three teams in a row coming into that game. And, uh, yeah, they are really frustrating uh, you know, opponents, forwards and and defensemen. And so, yeah, kudos for for all all the hard work they’re putting into, you know, to keep that keep the team in in the playoff spot. Uh, funny you should mention the goalies because there was an article written at the Athletic ranking the goalie tandemss in the entirety of the NHL and the Minnesota Wilds number two on the list. Just a tremendous season uh for both Philip Gustoson and Yesper Valstead, but I think especially for Yesper. so far this year, we just we didn’t know what to expect from him and so far he has uh he’s passed with flying colors this year. Yeah, he’s fueling off all the talks. You know, he’s he’s brought it up multiple times here that uh you know, people were saying that he’s he’s not a good player, draft bust, and uh you know, he’s he’s coming with that mindset uh to prove people wrong. And you know, so far so good. You know, the team had a slow start. Uh, I wouldn’t put it all on the, you know, the goalies. Uh, the team has been a lot better defensively, too. And so, but the goal, you know, Yesper’s out there to prove that, hey, I was a first round draft pick for a reason cuz you don’t see a lot of that, you know, from, you know, first round goalies. So, uh, you know, to pick someone that high, um, you know, you really you really have to pay off or else, you know, it’s really demoralizing. And so kudos to him for for putting in the hard work and especially, you know, after the really tough season he had in Iowa and he was told that he was going to be up here and then wasn’t. And so, uh, it’s really nice for him to to show that, hey, I I do belong in this league. You know, it’s funny you, if I look at this article, the uh the number one combination through the NHL so far this year, at least in terms of goals saved above expected, has been the New York Rangers. Igor Shisturkin is right now 109 and two and is 12.55 goals saved above expected which equal parts doesn’t surprise me but also completely surprises me. Um I mean he’s one of the best goalies in the league by far but uh if that Rangers team could just score some goals they might not be so just insanely uh polar opposite on a nightly basis. Yeah, their decor is a train wreck. And you know, I saw Adam Fox is now hurt. So, it could get even worse and Eigor is just going to have to continue to save the day. He’s he’s so much fun to watch in that there. He keeps he tries to keep them in in every game. And uh yeah, they just uh talk about struggling at home. They they can’t win at at home at all. So, I I get it at MSG, but uh yeah, it’s it’s crazy. um you know when you see stat like that for for a goalie the other uh the other teams in the top five. So you got the Rangers at one, the Wild at two, the Colorado Avalanche are third. Scott Wedgwood has been brilliant this season. And I know McKenzie Blackwood’s kind of working his way back in. He’s also been very good. Uh but get this, you’ve got the New York Islanders, Ilas Sorin and David Riddick. At number five, the Boston Bruins who have Jeremy Swayman who is currently uh 22.38 goals saved above expected. Jonas Corposalo is negative 1.84 goals saved above expected. So as long as Jeremy Swayman starts, they’re okay. But if Corposalo starts, uh get all the women and children out of the first 10 rows of left field because uh there going to be some home runs served up when he’s between the pipes. Yeah, that tradeoff uh for bringing him in and uh Omar gone that was it’s been been a nightmare for sure. Uh I wish they would have been able to keep Mark, but you know, I get it. You know, those two seemed like they had a great, you know, friendship and uh they’re relying on Swayman too much to to hand, you know, to carry the torch. Uh we’ll see if it comes back to bite him or not. You know who’s dead last? Uh, I’ll give you a hint. It’s a Central Division team and it is none other than the St. Louis Blues who are collectively like 11 negative 11.32 goals saved above expected. Jordan Bennington is minus 7 himself. Joel Hoffer uhgative -3.69. Uh, they are collectively below 90% as far as the save percentage goes. They are nine, 10, and seven as a tandem. Putrid, awful, hideous. It’s It’s really bad. I don’t think Team Canada can go with Jordan Bennington in in the in the Olympics, right? It that’s that’s awful. There’s no way that he can just I don’t think he can just turn a switch. Uh yeah, it that tandem is just just gross, right? Uh I wouldn’t be shocked to see St. Louis try to make a goalie move here soon if they really have aspirations to be a playoff team. But it looks like they lost Jimmy Snugger for a while too and another player gets burns. What are what are players doing off the ice at home? They just don’t don’t cook yourself. I have been trying to become an advocate for fire safety. Um, players need to like just just keep an eye on what is what is on your grill or if you’re trying to to cook something on a campfire like get plastic cups. Just Yeah, you don’t don’t lean up against a cup. Oh my goodness. Yeah, the NHL players are having some odd injuries this season. It’s it’s a rough go, but uh you know it’s the Wilds if they can just they can just do like they weren’t able to do last year. If they can just hold serve and not lose Carl Capri off or Matt Baldy or either of the goalies, they should be fine. We know that the Wild are looking to improve the roster some way somehow. uh a player that the Wilds have been linked to lately. I ask the question, is it a would it be an improvement or would it just be adding another uh in a series of pieces to this roster that uh is not going to really help you rise to the top. So, we’ll take a look at what Kefir Sherwood could potentially add to this Minnesota Wild roster. That’s on the way as we continue today’s episode of Lockown Wild right after this. We are very excited to be your number one sports podcast network. So, we appreciate having uh having you along for the ride. Alex, let’s talk about a name that has been linked to the Minnesota Wild here uh recently. Uh that is a member of the Vancouver Conucks, Kefir Sherwood. And we know this because um the Wild have been linked as one of the teams that has checked in on his services. So, I guess my big question is would Kefir Sherwood be an upgrade? Now, he he’s got 12 goals in 26 games so far this year, but he has never really been a big goal scorer. He has 19 goals as his careerh high, which he did last year. more on what he did last year in a second, but this just this just feels like a guy that would come in and just be another, you know, bottom six, middle six type player, but somebody that is more third line than second. So, it doesn’t really seem to be addressing the most pressing issue with this team. I’m 100% in agreement with you. This team already has enough bottom six forwards. it it doesn’t seem like it would improve the team that much if you’re trying to, you know, find a consistent scoreer, a top six winger. I I I don’t see the role for him here on this team with with with his skill set. He’s a great hitter as you’re going to talk about and uh you know, they already have enough of those. Uh you know, is he just like a Louis Vuitton uh Marcus Felino? I mean, that’s uh I I just don’t I don’t see, you know, the need really. Yeah. It just it feels again redundant. Like just looking at his numbers, he was a 40point player last year, but that’s the only time he’s ever done that. He had 19 goals, but his second highest mark is what he is currently doing this year. He’s shooting 24% this year, which what do we know about shooting percentages that are that high? They’re not sustainable. His pre his uh next highest season was last year in which he was at 13.5%. But up until the last two seasons plus this year, he had never been a 10 goal scorer. He had barely played in the NHL. So, as a 23, 24, 25, 26 year old and 27, you’re talking about a guy who played above 32 games twice. And as far as the hits go, 462 hits last season. So, he played in Nashville as a 27 and 28-year-old. John Hines tie uh 234 hits in the 23-24 season. Then he goes to Vancouver for his first year and that was under Rick Tocket and 462 hits which is just under six per game and now this year he has 106 in 26 games. But I don’t know, like it feels like kind of the same thing where you’re like, well, hey, this guy has scored some goals over the last couple of seasons and that means he’s definitely going to do it again, right? No, it doesn’t mean that. And it’s just like the word that just comes to mind is just it strikes me as it just strikes me as a redundancy. It strikes me as as an excess, as a surplus, but not in the area you need, which is goal scoring. Let’s take a look at it this way. Is Colorado shaking in their boots? Is Dallas shaking in their boots? Is Winnipeg when they have Hella Buck Healthy shaking in their boots? I I don’t see it as a needle mover, you know, if they were to try to acquire, you know, this type of player. Sure, he’s a Bill Garren type of player, right, with with that hitting that you brought up, but they’ve already have enough of these types of players. And I would just it would be just a redundant uh to to trade for him. He scored 19 goals on 141 shots on goal last year. And off the top of my head, I believe 141 shots on goal would rank him outside the top 10 as far as wild players go. Right in line with all the other guys that are kind of the same sort of player. So, if it were me, I would much rather go try to get something you don’t have as opposed to going and getting the third the the third DVD set of the Christmas Vacation movie because the two that you have, you can’t really find. So, you’re just going to buy another one? No. Go get yourself a new Xbox. Go get yourself uh a lease on a new vehicle. like go get something that you need. Go get something that will actually turn eyes and will make people say, “Okay, that’s a problem.” Kefir Sherwood’s not a problem. It’s not a problem. It’s not that’s not what you need. It’s not a problem. And we’ve we’ve been through this with Vancouver when there was interest from them in Marco Rossi. uh the Wild seemed to not be really interested in the assets that Vancouver would would have, you know, to come along with him, right? Um and uh you know, it would be more than just him, right? Uh so I just don’t see these two teams working something out. They they don’t uh they don’t have have the matchup, I don’t think. Yeah. and he would reportedly cost a first round pick plus. And at that point, I’m like, well, now I’m fully out. So, no, you can’t trading a first round pick. Yeah. If you’re going to be trading a first round pick, you may as well trade it for somebody that will be with you for the rest of the year and that you can maybe integrate into what you’re trying to do next year as well. That would be a worthwhile way to not use a first round pick to draft. you’d instead be pulling talent in. But what do I know? Yeah, makes makes no sense. The player that, you know, if they were to try to acquire from Vancouver, that makes a lot more sense is Teddy Bluger. Bill Garin was a part of the Pittsburgh front office that drafted Teddy Bluger. So if there’s anybody that would be on that roster that would actually really intrigue them is is a is a you know Teddy Bluger. So I I would very much be you know rather you know in his type of services than than a Kefir sure would for sure. the Minnesota Wild will have uh plenty of time to debate all the trade stuff because we still have a month plus until trades start to seriously happen. You may see some outlier trades here and there. Uh more pressingly, the Minnesota Wilds are now in a new month, which means that uh the month of November, as successful as it was, is in the rearview mirror. and the Wild have a 4-ame West Coast swing that is uh forefront on everybody’s minds. We’ll talk more about uh who is coming up on that four-game swing and what the Wild need to do in order to uh come away with wins in those games that’s on the way as we finish today’s episode of Lockown Wild after this. Final segment of today’s episode of Locked on Wild. Once again, we thank you for making Locked on Wild your first listen each and every day. Uh again, make sure to like and subscribe so you don’t miss out on any new episodes throughout the week. Uh we’ve got you covered all week long as we uh gear up for a big West Coast swing that starts tomorrow night, Alex, against the Edmonton Oilers. It’s at Edmonton, at Calgary, Tuesday, Thursday, at Vancouver on Saturday, and Monday night at Seattle. 8:00 p.m. starts Tuesday, Thursday, 900 p.m. starts on Saturday and Monday. And just looking at the state of the games for this week, let’s start with Edmonton. The Oilers off to a rough start. The goalending has been putly bad. Uh you’ve still got Conor McDavid. You still got Leon Dryidle. Some of the pieces are starting to get back and healthy. Uh this this is going to be one of those that I feel like you just have to keep hammering away at the Oilers goalending because you’re going to get a push, you’re going to get a fight and holding uh Conor McDavid in check. Easier said than done. Yeah. Yonas Jonas Baddin has had a lot of success in his career, you know, with with frustrating Leon and Connor have to stay out of the box. You know, you you mentioned that they’re getting healthier. Zack Heyman’s back and so they they’re a team that the Wild have had success against lately though. So, you know, that that’s a very winnable game. They they have they clearly when you look at the goalies, they have a you know, no matter who goes has a huge advantage over Steuart Skinner, who I cannot believe they keep going back to him. You Calvin Pickard seems like that playoff run was just kind of just, you know, just magic. Um and that’s gone away. Um and you know that’s that these this entire trip uh you know are are winnable games for sure. Uh you then face the Calgary Flames and the Wild played Calgary earlier this year. They shut him out. That was one of Yespervalstead starts. We do by the way know that Yaspervalstead is going to start against Edmonton. So, uh, that is just another just another exciting game that that Yesper has, uh, under his belt, uh, in the early part of this season. Um, just adding to the adding to the lore. I love that they’re going with him for that game. You know, I I think part of it is just like, hey, you guys could have drafted him in the first round and you passed on him. So, I think he’s going to relish, you know. Yeah. Twist the needle the knife. uh you know I think he’s going to love you know if he plays well you know that just added uh added to the lore for for Yesper. It’s like I know Ken Holland is no longer here but let’s twist the knife because you guys could have had Yesper Volstead as your goalie of the future and you decided that you didn’t need him. Uh Calgary Flames are nine and 18 94 and 14 if you count overtime losses. We don’t. It’s a loss that took longer. Nine and 18. Uh they have the third fewest goals in the entirety of the Western Conference behind a team that will show up later on this list. Uh this is another one too. I I kind of wondered in the first match up between these two teams. Alex, I I kind of wondered how the Wild would handle that more big brutish style that the the Flames are forced to play with because of the players on their roster. And that was an issue, but also it it was one of those games where no matter how hard the Flames tried to uh to get one past Yasper, they couldn’t. Um I I feel like the team is going to need to play much better against the Flames in order to win on the road. 100%. They’re starting to play a little bit better, but you you can see the faults in that Flames roster. And no matter how good you know Dustin Wolf is going to be and has been, you can’t he can’t do everything. And uh you know they just have to you know Calgary does have some players that are pretty good offensively and you know if you know if they get to a power play you know you know Nazam Kadri Hub Hubadro so keep keep that thing at five on five and uh you know they can really really show that they can outskate Calgary and just uh you know if they get one or two they they can shut it down and and and Calgary doesn’t doesn’t put up much of a fight like we saw uh previously, but you know, on the road, you know, Flames will try to feed off their fans, so I get that, too. Uh the Wild will then get a firsthand look at Kefir Sherwood and the Vancouver Conucks on Saturday. Uh Vancouver, they have given up a gajillion goals. They’ve given up the uh tied for the most with the Edmonton Oilers in the entire Western Conference with 95 in 26 games. Uh the goalending is a mess cuz Thatcher Demco can’t stay healthy. Uh Quinn Hughes has been in and out of the lineup. Elias Patterson, a shell of the player that the Canucks signed for 11.5 million a year for eight years. Remember when we were like, “Oh yeah, definitely go get Elias Patterson if he becomes available.” Whoops. Um, but it’s it just again another winnable game. The Canucks are 37 and one at home. This is another one that you just got you just got to take care of business. Have to. And remember last season when uh all the drama with Derek Forbert getting his orbital bone broken from Yakov Drenin. So I know I know the teams have changed quite quite a bit here since last season. Different different head coach. But uh you know that’s something to to keep an eye on for sure because those you know some a lot of those players are still on the team. So, you know, Trenon might uh might get it from from them. And uh you know, who they have now, too, is Evander Kane. So, you know, he’s going to just uh you know, do something stupid out there. So, I wouldn’t wouldn’t surprise me to see, you know, uh you know, somebody go after him. Maybe Yakov get in a fight with with Evander. We We’ll see. The uh the four game swing finishes with the Seattle Kraken. And this is not this is not a typo. This is not this is not a an incorrect number. Um, as far as goals go, now again, ESPN does it weird where they count the shootout goals as well, but the uh the Kraken have no shootout wins. Seattle has scored 59 goals in 24 games this season. 59 goals. They got off to a really good start mainly because they were limiting opportunities for opposing teams. They can’t score. Goalending situation is kind of weird. I know they are 63 and three at home, but finish the trip strong and you look at these games and you have got to be the favorite team in three out of the four. And so it feels like the Wild in this four game set feels like the Wilds are going to need points in at least three of these games for it to be considered successful. I’m right there with you. The these are a lot of the teams struggle majorly offensively and uh the goalending you look at all of them not great. Even Seattle Joy Decord’s you know been banged up and Grubower yikes or if Matt Murray’s out there too when they’ve had him. Yeah it just Yeah. I and Seattle doesn’t truly have an offensive superstar. I don’t think it, you know, there’s a lot of just uh just guys out there, some decent players. I mean, Matty Beneers hasn’t hasn’t turned into whatever they thought he you know, he was going to be when you’re drafted that high. You know, Jyn Schwarz has been around for a while. Jordan Eberly. I mean, Brandon Montour is great on the back end, but they don’t really have that offensive dynamo that uh you would think they would have by now. Uh remember when I said I would rather have Marco Rossi than Matty Beneers? And there were a lot of people who were like, “That’s a that’s a take.” Uh Matty Beneers has one nonp power play goal this year. One non power play goal this year. Can’t happen. He has three total. He has three total goals. Just not what they thought they were getting, that’s for sure. No. No. But uh but hey, at least they gave him that seven by seven. That’s going to that that’s going to get uglier and uglier for sure. That uh that contract got Ron Francis a promotion out of the general manager’s chair. We’ll give you a different title. Yeah. Just because of that. Yikes. Stop putting the roster together and just go sit up in the sweets. Please be a figurehead. Yes. It’s It’s interesting. I actually like um I actually like Lane Lambert as a coach. I think he’s done a good job considering what this roster is. But this is a team that they may need a uh they may need a tear down to the studs cuz uh it is it is a collection of players. Freddy Gudro has two points in 11 games. Um so it’ll be good to see Freddy back, but beyond that um win the games you should and it’ll be a successful trip. And if you can maybe if you can manage to get a point against the Edmonton Oilers and all of a sudden you get points in all four games, preferably wins, but at this point, let’s let’s use the system, just get points. Uh then it’ll be a successful trip. And uh that is I guess about all we can hope for at this point. Uh programming note, because this episode will be coming out after the uh after the the stream today. Um, Tuesday night we will post. Thursday night we will post. Um, since those are later games pro we’ll postcast all four. They’re later games. I’ll just be tired the the next day. So, um, we’ll, uh, we’ll look forward to postcasting with you and, uh, we’ll have an episode coming up tomorrow to break down the, uh, the Oiler game in more detail, as well as a look at the suddenly effective Minnesota Wild penalty kill that just spent the month of November going, uh, 34 out of 37 as far as kills go. Every NHL fan is taking notice of our Goalkeeping. I was a Goalie and I do.
We have turned the corner and I have to believe that the locker room is dialed in. Let’s go Wild. We have something here.
Billy needs to get a BALLS TO THE WALL COMPETITOR!!! A guy that inspires by example on top of skills. I do not believe we have gotten 100% from Tarasenko in the regular season. He needs to average 3-4 shots per game or sit in the pressbox PERIOD!!! FISH OR CUT BAIT!
Hartman needs a shot quota as well! Unless the expectations are laid out and acknowledged as received making sure they are dialed in, these guys may give in to habits that just do not produce results! Again FISH OR CUT BAIT!
You have to seriously wonder if Binnington is playing hurt…we have never seen him have this difficulty that I am aware of…
Idk man while be cool if they traded for some help has to be a guy that can fit in and hopefully isn't dependent on who he plays with so annoying to have guys who do next to nothing unless they are on a line with kirill or boldy . Wild really need a guy who can score some goals on the 3rd and 4th line so often it feel like it's all boldy and kirill either scoring goals and setting them up be nice to have a 3rd guy you can count on
