From the Bronx ➡️ Queens! Devin Williams in agreement with Mets on a three-year deal 😧
Let’s get right into the news that we learned of overnight because there was a big signing that we came upon late yesterday while you were watching something else. While you were watching How did you come up with the title? Well, it’s while you were watching something else. Maybe you were watching that rotten uh football game yesterday, which actually was compelling for a minute. Hey, Will Sammon sending this out on X reliever Devin Williams and the Mets in agreement on a three-year deal. League source tells the athletic the value of the deal more from will remains possible by the way they can still add in Diaz deal is for4 million plus $6 million signing bonus prrated equal over the three years $15 million deferred that’s five each year so it’s a deal worth more than $50 million uh Williams last year the Mets are hoping was just kind of a blip on the radar screen and the aberration if you will because man, he was so good in Milwaukee. And that’s the Devin Williams that the Mets are buying. I think fans are thrilled to learn that maybe there could be a two-headed monster in the back of the bullpen if they bring Diaz back. We’ll get into some of the other questions that come from this in a minute. First, I want to know your initial reaction. Well, my first reaction when I heard this, the number jumps out, right? You’re like, where does he compare to everybody else? But the biggest thing to me, all the money is up. Yeah. Dylan sees 210. You start looking at the deals that are done. Four guys take qualifying offer. The money is up. Yeah. And so Devin Williams got paid above where he probably thought he might get to when he said, “I’ll be a free agent.” Here’s the answer to what you and I were asking the same thing. We were talking about this today. Where does the money kind of rank among current closers? Let’s lock All right. Let me lock in on the financials. Yeah, Dro, I knew you going to ask for that. Here it is. Devin Williams, it’s 17 million a year roughly. So take in this board and know that Devin Williams signed for more than what Araldis Chapman made last year, more than what Kenley Jansen’s made the last couple years annually. And the three guys who are really interesting, who aren’t on this board, who are watching this with a big smile on their face, absolutely are Andre Munoz, Yan Duran, and Felix Bautista. Why? Because they’re are all arbitration eligible. And this is great news for their camp. Yeah. It’s almost like when the NFL started paying linemen, you know, the closers are starting to get paid in this market or the bullpen guys are getting paid. The other thought with Devin Williams is is how does he get this money? And I was saying, so I had to go ahead and and search around, ask some sources, okay, he had as many as 10 teams constantly in contact with his camp. And so that’s going to push your money up. And then the other thing about it is David Sterns is the guy who drafted him in Milwaukee. So David Sterns, this is his guy. He became the GM when this guy broke into the big leagues, you know, a year or two before that. Then he brings him to the big leagues and he puts him in that pin and then he makes him a closer. Then he goes to the Mets. So he’s watched the maturation of Devin Williams. If there’s a guy sitting out there right now saying, “I can help him get back on track. That was no big deal.” it would be David Sterns and that’s what I think he’s betting on that I know this guy better than anybody else. Well, here’s another element to this and I want your your thoughts on this too. Um, this is the back page of the New York Post. It says city switcher, right? You go from one very difficult New York environment to another very difficult New York environment. Now, there are those that think that uh Devin Williams in Milwaukee flourished because it’s not the media center and it’s not what New York is from from all off the field angles, right? Does that continue? Is New York the problem or was the fit with the Yankees specifically why we saw the bloated numbers? Well, it’s hard to tell if New York was the problem. He just scuffled with the Yankees and he happened to be in New York and that blows up. Had he done that in in Queens, it would have been the same result because the media is going to be the media. But I just think he got into such a bad funk. And I’d go back again to David Stern’s like, “Hey, I know this guy’s mechanics. I know what numbers I’m looking for. I think he really believes he knows Devin Williams better than everybody else.” And actually Devin Williams showed signs of coming out of it, but he just never grasps in New York. And you know, it reminds me of Randy Johnson when Randy went to New York and he slapped the camera the first day. There have been a lot of them, man. Jack, Randy Johnson, Ed Witson, like guys that come to the Bronx that aren’t what they were beforehand. And and I think that that’s a point, too. The Bronx is different. Yeah. Than Queens. It just it is. Okay. Well, we’ll see how that goes. Uh getting back to one of the other tenants of this story, the report that I think Anthony Doma had and we can put it back up on the screen that the Mets are still interested in ressigning Edwin Diaz, which is really interesting. And Williams is open to pitching in a setup role. I mean, that might be the answer. Maybe you right you you ease him into his second team in the last two years as a seventh or eighth inning guy. Leave the ninth for Diaz where he’s been for the last few years. He can be a little bit of a highwire act too, you know. Look, he had Josh her all those years in Milwaukee. So, we were talking about this earlier. Some me and some of the guys were talking about this here at work. Do you want this? What are the Mets doing was the the question thrown out to the table, right? What they’re doing is they’re shortening the game. They’re saying we can get Williams in the seventh and he and Diaz can get us through the end of the game, seventh, eighth, and ninth inning or eighth and ninth. So, now you shorten your pitchers games. So, do you want Williams and maybe Diaz at a hundred a little maybe over 100 million plus or do you want Dylan CES for 210? Mhm. Cuz that’s where the market for the starting pitching is going now. You’re collecting pieces to play tournament style baseball. Yes. Cuz the assumption is that the Mets will be in the tournament next year with the payroll that they’re going to bring. So, make yourself a tournament style team. They’re going to pitch. They’re going to make 50 at least 50 appearances, those two guys each. Oh, well, I I would I’d go way north of that. You You know what I’m saying? Yeah, I hear you. At minimum, you’re thinking healthy, they’ll be 50, 60, or 70 would be crazy. But 50 to 60 appearances, that’s 120 games if you split them. But you’re not going to split them up. I’m saying back back to back. Give me 60 games of those guys. By the way, on this board, do you think um do you think Juan Sto because he anointed Starling Marte the most important player in the clubhouse, you think he’s going to donate a portion of his salary to keep him there? No. Or is he going to seed control back to Lindor, which is where it should have been all along? Yeah. You’re going back to You’re going back to yesterday’s show. Lindor’s team. Let’s um we’re going to talk about what’s next for the Mets, I think, a little bit later on. JP Moros is going to join us in the next segment to talk a lot of Mets, man. JP, good morning. uh give us what you got on the signing itself and then spin it forward. What’s next for the Mets? Sure. Well, Matt N, good morning. I think that the Williams contract and I listened to a lot of Harold’s great comments there in in the beginning part of the show. Here’s one of my favorite takeaways is that yes, there’s the David Sterns connection. David Sterns knows Devin Williams well. He also knows that some of Devin Williams best work in his career came in the eighth inning in front of Josh her. So clearly Williams works very well with a fellow allstar caliber reliever in the bullpen. I think that’s what keeps that lane open for Edwin Diaz to possibly return and enjoy what would be one of the best bullpen anywhere major league base here from September one forward. He had one of the lowest OPS’s against of any reliever in the American League. So Williams showed by the end that after that initial adjustment phase, he was able to settle in very nicely. The Mets have an excellent pitching resource room to help him get back to being the dominant force that he has been. And there you see it. He just he was very unlike unlucky. The expected erra was around 3.09 as you see it there. He was very unfortunate in the way a lot of things went and I think with a better start a little more comfort there in in flushing and again if he’s pitching in the eighth inning I look for the Mets to have I think one of the most dynamic late inning bullpen crews we have ever seen so JP how’s that number get to 50 million I know it’s reported 45 for for three years but there’s bonuses as well how’s it get there were there a lot of teams involved or how does it get there Harold I heard exactly what you were saying off the top of the show that there there were double digits number of teams that were interested there in Devin Williams to varying levels because you look at a team like the Dodgers, they were reported very early to have been involved. Whenever the Dodgers are in there, it’s good for the marketplace. The Giants that checked and they’re a team that we’re talking about a lot. I’m sure we’ll get to them later on in this segment. Teams like the Tigers, teams like the Blue Jays, a lot of clubs that were in the playoffs wanted to get even better in the late innings. So, I think that overall, Harold, I heard the same thing that you did, doubledigits number of teams that were interested in Williams, and now I think some of that is is moving over to other available relievers. Now, on the offensive side of things for the Mets, I will say this. As much as they have already added Marcus Semian now at second base in the trade with Texas, they’ve signed Williams, they still are going to get, I believe, a major corner bat. And and I’m still focused on really two Scott Boris clients right now, Pete Alonzo and Alex Bregman. And guys, there is a very legitimate conversation as to which one of the two, Allonzo or Bregman would be the better fit because I think the Mets are also aware that a division rival like the Phillies also has some interest in Alex Bregman. Now, with the Phillies, it would be a little more complicated. They’d have to then trade Alec Bow. You also wonder um is there still the possibility for Philly if they would sign a first baseman? Does Harper go to the outfield? Again, in Philly, it’s more complicated with the Mets. I look at this situation with Bregman and say there’s a clear lane for him in New York and and especially when you consider the way in which the Yankee fans view Bregman as a villain from the past Astro Yankee rivalry. Just think how much energy there’d be in the Subway Series that the Mets sign away Devin Williams from the Yankees and then they bring in Bregman. My goodness. Tune in to those matchups in 2026. That series is going to have energy regardless. But I I certainly hear what you’re saying.

bring back Diaz, this does nothing for me
The Mets make moves that make no sense.
But the Mets are at least showing signs to make the pitching better
Devin Williams needs to learn Chinese
It's a worthless trade if DIAZ isn't re-signed because WILLIAMS is still sufdering from the PETE ALONSO SYNDROME after ALONSO hit a hr off him in the playoffs. On the other hand, DIAZ is an elite reliever who won the RELIEVER OF THE YEAR AWARD.,worth every penby.
They missed out on big details.. 5 mil per is deferred and 6 mil is in a bonus.. because of the deferral he is def making less than 17 mil a year, so I think they got a good deal in general
The METS should also bring back TYLER ROGERS, who pitched pretty well for them in 2025.
Are you kidding me ! 🤢🤮
JUST BRUNG BACK AMONSO AND DIAZ becsusr BREGMAN doesn't bring the offense necessary to protect JUAN SOTO in the lineup..
DW was elite for years prior to getting traded to the yanks, if you look at the numbers he ran into some bad luck last year. His FIP was more than two runs lower than his ERA, at 2.68. And his expected ERA was 3.04. The hard-hit rate against him — while a career high — wasn’t alarmingly high, at 35.7%. The signature “airbender” changeup Williams is well known for was still effective in 2025, though not quite as dominant as in years past — opponents hit .194 against the pitch last season and it generated a 37.3% whiff rate.
