THE HERD | Colin Cowherd BLOWN AWAY, Chicago Bears Are SUPER BOWL CONTENDERS | NFL

I mean, it doesn’t take that long. When you get the right head coach, you get a Mike Vrabel, you get a Shawn Payeyton, you get a Ben Johnson, you get a Liam Cohen. It doesn’t take that long. There’s so much mediocrity in so many industries. Excellence rises. And it looks different. Here’s all I know. Last year, the Bears were 29th in big plays with the same quarterback, DJ Moore. Yeah, had that, too. And now they’re second. My bad. first. They’ve gotten better at everything. Getting the right coach does not guarantee Super Bowls. Most reasonable people understand that. But it does guarantee an identity. The Patriots have one. The Bears have one. The Jags have one. It guarantees you’ll get the most you’ll squeeze the most out of your roster. This is largely last year’s roster with a better guard, center, guard combo up front. Yet, the defense now is number one in takeaways, number two in rushing. It’s not like DeAndre Swift wasn’t there last year. It just doesn’t take that long. And you’ll find a common thread with the really good coaches. They’re hard on their player. Shawn Peyton’s hard on Bon Knicks. No pandering. Ben Johnson’s hard on Caleb. No pandering. All the friendly the friendly guy down in Miami. I think he seems like a great guy. This I don’t need hugs and pandering and kisses and rainbows and birds chirping. Be hard on your star young quarterback. Be hard on everybody. Demand attention. You guys get an off season, right? You get Mondays off, sometimes Tuesday. practice games, two hours, three, be focused. And that’s what Chicago is. Not only the big picture stuff, they’re just better at what their roster allows them to be better at. And I’ll tell you, this Bears team is built for December and January because they can run the ball. Yep. Cuz they can run the ball. Chicago Bear Bears fans, before we get started, please do not forget to subscribe uh and watch the full length of the video. When you do, that absolutely is the best possible way to support the growth of this channel so I can keep making the best Chicago Bears content that I can. When you guys do that, it starts an avalanche. Views go through the roof, subscribers go through the roof, and it absolutely means the world to me. Uh, so please do not forget to subscribe and do not forget to watch the full length video. Now, let’s drop some truth here for the Chicago Bears because in the beginning of the season when they were struggling a little bit and everybody was trying to rip Caleb and this and that, who said, “You got to be a little patient. Let’s just relax.” Oh, I did, didn’t I? Yeah, I did. um when the Lions rolled the Chicago Bears and people were like, “Oh, see Ben Johnson’s not that good of a coach.” It was all It was all uh Dan Campbell and the Lions. Who said, “Everyone, can we all just relax?” I did. Um, how about on Friday after that game? And I said that was a coaching master class and random fans were like, “It’s not coaching. What are you talking about?” Blah blah blah blah blah. Now Monday comes along and that’s all anyone can talk about is Ben Johnson, Ben Johnson, Ben Johnson, Ben Johnson because it’s coaching. This is coaching right now. And I said Caleb Williams isn’t even playing he’s not even he’s you could say that he’s not even playing great right now. He’s playing okay to good. He’s making some nice plays, some awesome plays, but like that doesn’t mean that you’re playing great or you’re an elite quarterback. That’s that’s not what makes Josh Allen special. That’s not what makes Patrick Mahomes special. It’s not what makes Tom Brady special. It’s all it’s the the level of consistency that they can do everything else consistently combined with some of those special plays. But Caleb is still missing a lot of throws. He’s not he’s not even playing great. And that’s what I said throughout the course of the season. I said Caleb isn’t even playing great right now. And yet look what this offense is doing. I’d have been saying that week after week after week and I said look at this. And now in a game where your superstar number one overall quarterback is 17 for 36, 154 yards, 4.3 yards per attempt, one touchdown, one interception, and a 56.9 passer rating, you dominate. That’s coaching. That’s coaching. Um, just wait until you actually can get consistent highlevel quarterback. Just wait. If Caleb Williams can just be I want to use like the lowest example possible. Um, the most the the such a baseline example. Um, if you could get I can’t think of a good Kirk Cousins level play right now. Um, this team is the is the number one Super Bowl contender by like a mile. By like a mile. I mean, it’s it’s it’s extraordinary what they were able to do specifically even just in this Eagles game. uh 10 for 17 on third down. 17 rushing first downs, 28 total first downs. Um you know, I’m excited to do the the Eagles clip uh when that comes around because it’s such a stark contrast in coaching. Again, the Eagles had two rushing first downs. Okay, the Bears 17 17. It’s extraordinary. It really is. I I s I encourage you because I don’t want to I tried my best not to just kind of have like repeat conversations here, but I posted a video um because I I did my postgame video after that game on Friday uh just talking about it and some people were kind of like, “You’re you’re emphasizing coaching too much.” And I’m like, “No, I’m not.” So, I made a separate video emphasizing coaching even more and broke down uh uh a handful of the of the run plays. And it’s just um you just you just see the brilliance. You see the execution, you see the plan of attack. Um, it was just it was a thing of beauty. It was an absolute thing of beauty. And again, a couple weeks ago, I said, “Guys, the Chicago Bears, you know, can be can be contending for the one seed.” I said that. No one else was saying that. I don’t think I heard anyone else say that. And now they’re the one seed. Okay? So, uh, that’s why it’s okay to be patient. That’s why it’s okay to not jump on a conclusion. That’s why it’s okay that when the Bears lose or the lot or um when when Caleb looks a little rough that you’re not just like this isn’t going to work. Nah, this isn’t going to work. Or or when they win a couple games, you don’t immediately say this is a Super Bowl winner. Oh, they’re win the Super Bowl. Nobody’s stopping them. It’s okay to be patient. It’s okay to say I want to see a little bit more. It’s okay to nitpick. It’s okay to look at this game and say this was a great game, but like Caleb Williams didn’t play good enough, right? and not just automatically excuse it and just like, “No, it doesn’t matter because of blah.” No, no, no. It’s okay. When you just have honest conversations in both directions, the good, the bad, the ugly, and anything in between, and you don’t try to rush to conclusions about what that means, you just bring it up. You just say, “Let’s discuss this.” You get closer to the truth. You get closer to the truth. It’s why it’s okay to have certain conversations when you’re like, “Ah, you know, that Giants game, they were kind of fortunate to win that game. It was still good. they still had really high quality moments. They showed that they can win, you know, this style of game, blah blah blah blah blah, but there’s still some issues that you would like to resolve, etc. It’s it’s like it’s okay to have some of those conversations. It’s okay that when you get beat and you have a rough game that you’re just like, “Ah, this was not a good game. Caleb needs to be better. This, that, and the third.” Like, you just got to be able to have the honest conversations. When you have the honest conversations in all directions, you get closer to the truth right now. And here’s the truth. As someone who has spoken the truth throughout the entire season, okay, the Chicago Bears right now are playing so far from their actual potential. I’ve said this now every single week. I think Caleb Williams is leaving a lot of big throws and a lot of big plays on the field. He just is. Caleb is playing so far from what you actually need him to be. And yet they’re eighth in points per game. They’re second in rushing yards per game. They’re first in big plays per game. They’re sixth in third down percentage. And they’re the number one seed in the NFC. They’re the number one seed in the NFC. And under a normal year when it felt like a lot of these teams, especially the teams that had been around for a while, the Ravens, the Bills, the Eagles, the 49ers, the Chiefs, in a season where they felt like those teams were just very consistent, playing their high level ball, and you’re just like, “All right, those teams in the playoffs, you know, they’re going to bring it. You know, they’re going to be brutal to beat, etc., etc.” All of these other teams are playing at such a degree of inconsistency that you’re just kind of like, what is going on? Who the heck are the Bills right now? I have no idea. Who are the Chiefs right now? I might not matter. They’re not They might They might not even be in the playoffs. Who are the Colts? They’re falling. The Jags. We’re going to start to be afraid of the Jags and Trevor Lawrence. Not me. The Patriots. Patriots have a great argument. The Broncos have a great argument. They have two really young quarterbacks like like Caleb Williams is right now. I’m sorry. you you you can’t count on a young quarterback. You can’t. It’s not that you can’t count, but you can’t um you can’t be confident in a young quarterback in those moments. You just can’t. There’s no frame of We have no strong frame of reference of what Caleb Williams does in a Super Bowl or Drake May. You’re you’re fooling yourself. You can you can have all the belief you want, but it’s just hope. It really is. It’s just it’s just thoughts and prayers in that moment. There there experience matters tremendously in the end in the NFL. tremendously and it’s what the Bills and the Chiefs and the Ravens and the Eagles and the 49ers have going for them. Even just coaching Shawn McVey admitted like I, you know, I wasn’t the best coach in the Super Bowl. It took, you know, Andy Reid multiple Super Bowls. Uh, you know, like it’s like you you got to be there year after year to just feel comfortable. And so that’s like the thing that the that the Chicago Bears have going against them right now technically, but it’s the perfect time to have that going against you because the NFL is just all over the place right now. It is. The the the Los Angeles Rams just lost to the Carolina Panthers. The 49ers seemingly keep winning even though their team is decimated with injuries. Is that going to eventually collapse? Uh the Denver Broncos, who are also the number one team in the NFL, they’re going down to the wire overtime. Grant, quite frankly, that should have been a tie game if we’re being honest with ourselves, but you know, uh the Commanders are like kind of like whatever. Let’s bring it back. YOLO. Uh cuz it’s like what do we have to lose? Nothing. Marcus Mariota backup quarterback balling against a top number one or number two defense. The Houston Texans who look like they were going to just be nothing, especially after um CJ Strad went down. They’re winning games. Like just a bizarre season. It’s an absolutely bizarre season. And out of all the other top teams in the NFL, out of all, let’s just be like real loose with what top team means. You know, the the the top eight teams, right? Uh top 10 Collins herd hierarchy, the Chicago Bears have every bit of ability to win a Super Bowl than any other other teams. Would you give more of the benefit a little bit more of a benefit of the doubt to say the Los Angeles Rams because Stafford’s been there, McVey’s been there? Absolutely. Absolutely. Right. I think that makes sense. If the Eagles could get on track, if there’s a sense of like, oh, they solved something. Oh, they figured it out. It was all because they were not drinking enough juice in the morning. Oh, that was so dumb. Ah, you got to drink your orange juice. And they were like, wow, we’re back to how we were. It’s like, would you give them the benefit now? Absolutely. But are you in a position right now to give the Seahawks that, the 49ers that, um, the Carolina Panthers that, the New England Patriots that, the Broncos that? No. On the other side, you would be like, it would be the Chiefs because they’re the Chiefs. Obviously, Andy Mahomes, etc. But like, are you going to give it to the Ravens right now? No. Are you going to give it to the Bills right now? No. You’re just not like, why would you? Why would you? Not to mention if you got home field advantage and Matthew Stafford needs to go play in a windy, cold, snowy, rainy, whatever, just less than ideal conditions. And when you can run the ball down down their throat, well, that goes a long way. That goes a that goes a big long way. If anything, you you’d almost want this situation where you’re actually like the two seed and you get to play the Ram, you know, they fall down to the seven seed because of the way how the you know, the seating is so aggressive right now. Uh that um they’re like the seven seed. You play them first round and just like stun them at home on the, you know, they’re on the road. Boom. Right. Like again, it’s just like it’s just like a just a pop. you just hit the ground running immediately and it’s like yeah you guys didn’t even get you you weren’t even able to get settled and now everyone else just has to come come through us right now. Um you know uh yeah I I I I think the Bears are so fascinating but to be fair all these other teams I could all see them also just getting knocked out the first round right now. That’s how it feels. That’s like Super Bowl contender or you’re getting knocked out the first round. Broncos, you’re gonna win the Super Bowl or you’re getting knocked out the first round. Chicago Bears, you’re gonna win the Super Bowl or you’re getting knocked out the first round, right? Like that. That’s how it feels right now. This has been a biz this Look at the seating right now. Look at the standings right now. It’s insanity. It really is. It’s absolute insanity. Um don’t even know how to make sense of it, honestly. And if anyone keeps acting like they know how to, I’m telling you, they’re just making it up. They’re just they’re just making it up. Saw one guy on NFL on NFL, you know, NFL Network or whatever with uh oh gosh, what’s his name? Kurt Warner, and I don’t I forget the the other guy’s name because I just kind of saw the clip late night and so I was like half paying attention and he said the quarterback for and I’m pretty sure he was a coach or player again, I forget. Um, but he was like, “The quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings is going to throw for like 400 yards. He’s going to have all this success. He’s going to stun the Seattle Seahawks.” You’re like, “What?” And that obviously didn’t happen. So, there’s a lot of pretending out there. There’s a lot of pretending. There’s no pretending here with the with the Chicago Bears. Out of all the other top teams, they have just the same amount of likelihood of going boom or bust, honestly. and it’s awesome to see. But those are just my thoughts. I’d absolutely love to hear yours. What do you guys all think about the Chicago Bears um winning their fifth straight now the number one seed in the NFC? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below. I read every single comment whether you agree with me or disagree with me. Either way, let’s get in some discussions. Let’s get in some fights. But ultimately, let’s just have some fun. And please do consider subscribing. We are building an amazing community here and absolutely love to see you part of it. I want to build something that we all generally feel connected to. Something that we’re really excited to be part of. I think we’re well on our way to doing it. 1. As a player, its a lot easier to have a coach hard on you if you feel like you're getting better and they keep winning, so its worth it. It feels like Caleb is playing at around 70% of his capability… If he can consistently get to 80% or more, they will be even more DANGEROUS!!!! Also can't say enough about what is happening thanks to having a dominant O-Line… Gives you ground yardage and opens up the pass. You don't even need elite RB or WR if your line is getting it done. Look at HOW GOOD the rookies at RB and TE are doing? Loveland and Monangai have been amazing – feels like they are clutch and delivering what feels like a Pro Bowl season… I hope they draft another O-Line and keep their depth at that position… Ben Johnson – motivates players, imbibes RESPECT, strategically excellent, inspires hard work and preparation, accountability, players want to be there, players buy in and give 110%, players BELIEVE, uses the Bears years of bad luck – embracing underdog status – as fuel, brings in "cast off" players (like CJ) and gives them a home, gives them hope, and they give everything on the field and it inspires other players… Yes, the sky is the limit. Now just BEAT GREEN BAY!!!!

  2. these are season stats for a superbowl winning qb …. Regular season (2000)

    Games played: 11

    Passing yards: 1,502

    Touchdowns: 12

    Interceptions: 11

    Passer rating: 76.6 …

  3. I consider this Caleb’s rookie season. He had an awful coaching staff behind him last season that no QB on earth could have ever thrived with.

  4. Bears can run and pass! That’s what’s make them dangerous. Ben is game to game specific. They threw it 18 straight times against the Steelers

  5. Ben will accept nothin short of success or he will leave ! He is a winner, and btw, so is CWs ! Bears are Indeed made for Dec. and Jan….Great offensive line, great run game ! Dan Cambell misses BJ BIGTIME !!

  6. Disagree, the teams run game opens up cuz Caleb’s explosive passes can stretch the field. Kirk cousins in this team would be worse. Now, if Caleb can pair his great plays with great operation and short to intermediate throwing consistency then yea

  7. So Caleb is holding the Bears back? Pluses of Caleb – built like an ox, stays fit, supremely confident, doesn’t let bad throws affect him, has massively cut down the sacks, can make some amazing plays and he turns into Mahomes in the last 10 minutes of games. Minuses of Caleb: Other than the reduced sacks his abilities in the first 50 minutes of a game are almost identical to last season. His completion percentage has barely improved despite the lofty 70% target set for him. Some of his miss placed passes are so ridiculously bad you sometimes wonder how he even became the starting QB in high school. Will he ever improve to the point where the Bears can regularly beat bad teams comfortably and the Bears make the play-offs year after year? Time will tell. But one thing is for sure. No matter how frustrated BJ is with some of Caleb’s wild throws and his happy feet, Caleb has deservedly bought himself another season as Chicago Bears QB1.

  8. If anything, the bears have been one of the most consistent teams. Take the ball away, don’t take sacks/turnovers, can run the ball, and Caleb and weapons can win in the clutch if needed.

  9. timing is everything for Ben's scheme. good. better. best. patience. CW is developing still, when he arrives… & Bears score 7 instead of 3? 30+ ppg.
Caleb having incompletions to avoid sacks & turnovers? sounds good to me

  10. Lovie Smith said the first thing was beat the Packers and the second was to win the NFC north. Our nemesis is the Packers. I’ll temper my expectations until after we play the Packers game 1. Im enjoying what I’m seeing out there. This is a bonus year. We weren’t expected to be this good so soon.

  11. In whoever it is or will be in the future at QB…this team doesn't need a Joe Mantana to be super bowl contenders for the next 5 years. Not with Ben Johnson leading this team. We will be just fine…patience is Key…
