Ryan Nembhard is an ANSWER to the Dallas Mavericks Point Guard Issue | Cooper Flagg is CLUTCH
One more thing, Ryan Nemhard is kind of the answer the Mavericks need at point guard and something changed with Cooper flag in the clutch against the Denver Nuggets. I want to break it down today’s locks. One more thing. I’m not a doctor. So, it’s me versus the machine. I don’t know. SN nice penetrating thrust to the middle. Hot man, the hot playoff. Wait, wait, one more thing. Fired up. Yeah, you’re still locked on to the Dallas Mavericks, your team every day. My name is Nick Angstead, media member covering the Mavics for over 10 years. Today’s episode is brought to you by FanDuel. Right now, new customers can bet just $5. If you win, you get $300 in bonus bets to use across the app. Head to fanduel.com to get started. It’s the one more thing, a bonus episode of Lockdown Mabs. If you missed the postgame episode with me and slightly talking about the Nuggets game, go listen to that show. But today, Ryan Nemhard, incredible game, historic game. The only undrafted rookie ever to have 28 points, 10 assists, zero turnovers, because the only other rookie to ever do it was Stfan Marberry. He was the number four pick in that draft. Insane. So, I want to talk about Ryan Nemar, but I also want to talk about Cooper Flag. Incredible clutch numbers for him because he scored a couple more points in the clutch in the game against the Nuggets. and two possessions specifically I want to talk about cuz Jason Kidd came out and talked to Cooper Flag and something changed about Cooper Flag. So I want to get into that but let’s start here. Ryan Nemhard an absolutely insane game for him. A historic game like I talked about like I I mentioned and the Mavericks have been looking for this point guard. They’ve been looking for somebody to fill in this spot. They started Cooper Flag as their point guard at the beginning of the season. That did not work. That was a disastrous experiment that just was something that did not work in any way, shape or form. Mavs, the 30th offense, one of the wor like a historically bad offense compared to what the rest of the league was doing. Really bad. Did not work at all. Yes, the Mavs had some injuries. Yes, the Mavs missed a bunch of shots and Jason Kid said, “Well, we just got to make shots.” Sure. Did not work at all. Then the Mavs decide to go, “All right, let’s change this up. Let’s go. Let’s do something different and let’s figure out if we can figure if if we can get Brandon Williams was the next one to start, right?” So, you had Cooper Flag start. Then you had uh yeah, you then you had Brandon Williams start a couple games. Then you had D’Angel Russell start a couple games and you’re just like, “All right, now what do we do?” Now Ryan Nehard has stepped into the starting lineup and he has been awesome. He’s been awesome in that spot. He’s hitting his shots. He’s running the ball in the pick and roll. He’s a great pass first player. And one of the things that Jason Kid said after the Denver Nuggets game that is true about Ryan Nehard, he knows who he is. And that’s kind of refreshing that a kid understands who he is and plays the game at the level that he plays. I think he’s one to have tennis assist as the only one to have tennis as an undrafted rookie. That’s special, especially for this group. He took the shots that are there for him tonight. The big thing is that his teammates enjoy him being out there because they know they have a chance of getting the ball. That’s important. But this is a veteran team. You look at all the guys that are out there, especially the guys who are out there in the clutch. You look at Anthony Davis, champion, all NBA player, maybe on the trading block, maybe out there trying to prove that he is, you know, worth it for to the Mavericks, worth it to another team to be traded. Like he is out there needing to get like the ball and needing to get make things happen. Klay Thompson towards the end of his career wanting to win games, frustrated the Mavericks aren’t winning games. Fourtime NBA champion. Naji Marshall, a guy, you know, a veteran guy that’s been around the NBA for a little bit trying to prove himself as a starter, trying to prove himself at the next level. Cooper Flag, number one pick in the draft. This generational talent that’s supposed to be this next guy. And you have undrafted two-way guy Ryan Nehard handling the ball and and has the ball in the clutch making things happen with those guys around him closing the game and trusting him and being there with him playing over a guy like D’Angelo Russell who came in and had very high aspirations for his own role in the team. Go back to media day. We talked to him on media day and D’Angel Russell kind of even scoffed at the idea that he was a stop gap point guard for for Kyrie Irving or that he wasn’t even he wasn’t going to start because people were talking about what if you’re a six-man and he he was like well I don’t know about basically like I don’t know about that and now he’s getting some DNP CDs end up playing this Nuggets game but you got Ryan Nar playing ahead of him and I just think that I think kid is right in the sense that he Ryan Nemar knows who he is as a rookie, as an undrafted guy trying to prove himself off a two-way contract. That is incredible that he already knows that that that is basketball IQ. And that’s the thing that’s shined through with Ryan Nehard is that he has a basketball IQ that is making the right play in a way that we haven’t seen from Brandon Williams. We haven’t seen from D’Angel Russell, right? A guy make the right play like that. We have seen Cooper Flag make the right play. When he played point guard, he was playing the right he was making the right play. It just wasn’t the right offense and it just wasn’t wasn’t the right time and it wasn’t he would like it he made the right play in in that moment but it wasn’t what the Mavericks needed at that point and we can go well we could break down all the different ways Cooper Flag didn’t work as a point guard Cooper Flag Grant as posted these great numbers that Ryan Nhard is generating 1.18 points per possession to pick ball handler including passes he ranks seventh in the NBA among all 126 players with 50 or more pick and roll possessions. That’s incredible. That’s efficiency. And this team is built around a pick and roll guy. It was built around Luca Donuch. It was built around a guy to make things happen for finishers. Anthony Davis is an allNBA finisher, an all league finisher as a player. I spent all off seasonason talking about they’ve got to get the right guy to set him up. And I was told by the by Lakers fans, by people that cover the Lakers, D’Angel Russell is great at setting up Anthony Davis. I went back and watched games, watched watch watched film, watched all kinds of stuff. Deandrew Russell was really good at setting up Anthony Davis. We just have not seen it because one, Anthony Davis hasn’t played enough. And two, DA Russell has a really hard start, like really tough start to the season and Jason Kidd has not really trusted him that much either. Let’s be let’s be clear about that. I mean, two DNPCDs like did not play coaches decisions and so didn’t really get a chance to see him. But the Mavs need a guy to set guys up. Cougar Flag is also like a really good playing off of another playmaker type guy. You don’t want him as the number one option first guy with the ball point guard. That’s not going to be his role in the NBA going forward. He’s going to be an allNBA level player that can that can play off of another ball handler that can that can play off of a mismatch, play off of, you know, he sets a screen or a guard sets a screen with him and then he gets to gets the roll. Like there’s just all kinds of different things you can do with Cooper. he can do anything on a basketball court. Uh Grant also said this number too that the the Mavs were only generating 0.91 points per possession on pick and roll including passes. Only the Blazers and the Sixers were worse. So you’ve got the Mavs scoring point 91 points per possession on pick and roll and right now scoring 1.18 points per possession. That doesn’t sound like a big difference. It really is. That’s points per possession. That adds up a lot, especially when you’re talking about 50 or more pick and roll possessions. That adds to a ton of points. And that could be the difference between the Mavs being awful and the Mavs being great. And so I think that Ryan Nehard is an answer to the Dallas Mavericks at point guard because he’s doing the right things. He knows who he is and he’s not afraid of the moment and has an incredible basketball IQ. Do I think he’s the answer for the Mavericks in the playoffs or to to get there? I don’t even know if they’re going to get there, but he’s the answer for the Dallas Mavericks right now at point guard. Coming up, Cooper flag, incredible clutch play. Uh, a stat that just astounded me. I’ll get into that and more. Lock time apps continues coming up. [Music] Today’s episode of Lock Time Apps brought to you by FanDuel. Check the QR code links in the description to find different ways to follow this show. We’re talking about Ryan Nemhard and we’re talking about how he’s kind of an answer for the Dallas Mavericks at point guard, especially right now because that’s what the Mavericks need. They need playmaking. They need somebody to set him up and honestly they need somebody to like hit a mid-range shot. Cooper Flag hitting the mid-range shots against the Clippers was really big and that was a that was massive for him. He didn’t he had 35 points without a three because his mid-range shot was get was getting going and he was driving to the basket. One of the things Cooper Flag is learning in the NBA right now is he can drive against so many different types of players. This is what makes a guy like Cooper Flag so effective in the NBA. guy honestly a guy like Ben Simmons was so effective at the his time in the NBA because and what makes LeBron what makes Luca what makes so many of these guys Yo Jo Yookic honestly you’re so big with that ability to dribble to finish with finesse with either hands to finish on runners hook shots to finish at the rim on finger rolls over the top of guys scoop shots because you can you can you have the body control to do that the balance to be able to finish the footwork to be able to finish underneath. Remember the play against the Clippers with Kawhi Leonard where Cooper Flag stops and pivots and pivots and then he gets underneath Kawi’s arm and then scores under like that. That is footwork and balance and all kinds of great stuff. Cooper Flag is 69 and he can finish over and he can like run past anybody with with his quick first step and finish over the top of the guys that can stay with him because they’re gonna be norm normally they’re gonna be smaller than him. And so he’s finding this advantage like in real time like a giraffe like a baby giraffe learning to walk, right? Like you just basically when a giraffe is born, they drop six feet from the top. Like the mom is not on the ground. The a pregnant giraffe will stand up and a baby giraffe will fall right out, stand up and start walking. And you think that they’re walking like running right away? Not really. They got to like figure it out. And so that’s what Cooper Flag is. He got dropped six feet on the ground and he’s got to figure out how to walk and figure out, hey, I have a lot of advantages here. And so this Denver Nuggets game, three minutes and 29 seconds left in this game. Jason Kidd calls a use it or lose it timeout, which Jason Kidd loves those use it. You like you can only take two timeouts into the last three minutes. And he always if he has three timeouts, he’s always going to take that one no matter what. He takes the timeout and he runs out to to Cooper Flag like immediately. Sometimes a coach takes a timeout and you’re like, “Ah, I’m just giving some guys a breather.” And so he just hangs out, he grabs the clipboard, pulls the coaches together or something like that. But when C when Jason Kid takes a timeout and immediately runs out to a specific player, you know he’s got a message for that player, right? And then Jason Kid takes his sweat takes his shirt and holds it over his over his face like holds it over his face like this to say something to Cooper Flag that he definitely didn’t want anybody lip reading or hearing at all. Right. Who knows what he what he actually said in there if he was calling another player out on the other team or if he was saying, “Hey, get your get your butt in gear.” you know, calling out the 18-year-old. Jason Kidd tries to keep some of the pressure off of some of these guys and so he didn’t he didn’t want people to hear what he was saying. But here are the two plays before that moment and the two plays after. The two plays before, Cooper Flag has the ball on the right wing, turns it down, passes it off, and Max Christie misses a three off of a Nehard drive. Anthony Davis misses the putback where it like almost went in, rimmed out, all that. Cooper Flag had an open lane to the rim, could have could have driven it all the way and decided not to because Anthony Davis was all the way on the three-point line. Jokic was all the way there and the guy that was going to come and be the help defender was Spencer Jones and Cooper Flag can can finish over the top of him. Next play after that, Cooper Flag passes it off to Clay. Klay runs like this weird pick and pop with Anthony Davis. Takes a contested mid-range shot, misses it. Cooper Flag could have driven on that play, too. Had a had a lane to the rim. Anthony Davis was pulling Jokic away from the rim. There was nobody small bigger than Cooper Flag. anywhere near the rim. Aaron Gordon was not playing in this game and Yonas Munis was not in the game. So, there’s nobody else contesting. Jason Gidd rushes out, calls a timeout, says this thing to Cooper Flag. Next two possessions after that, Cooper Flag drives right into to to Payton Watson. Right hook, runner off the glass with his right hand. Boom. Mavericks up 122 to 117. Next possession, Cooper Flag gets a rebound, gets in transition, pushes the ball. Joic is under the basket. Cooper flag gets Pton Watson on his hip again in transition. Gets him on his hip, holds him there, and then finger roll over the top of Joic as he’s backpedaling. Finish over the top of a of a seven foot center like that like immediat and those are two clutch buckets that put him in crazy crazy stat land that we’ll talk about in a second. But I think Jason K told him be aggressive. Drive to the rim. Get those get those buckets because you there’s nobody underneath the rim that can that can beat you. You can score over the top of him. Flag had a possession earlier where he scored over Joic that I specifically that I specifically mentioned like I specifically wrote down because Isaac loved that I wrote that down in my notes but he specifically like finish over the top of him and I was like oo that is interesting because if Flag can finish over the top of him it was in the first quarter 652 Flag side pick and roll with Anthony Davis floater over the top of top of Joic got the N1. If he can finish over Joic, then what’s stopping him from going to the rim every single time, right? If he’s got a lane, if you’ve got a driving lane, boom, get it done. Go get there. And that’s probably what Jason Kid told him. The clutch stats for for flag are insane right now. He’s shooting 59% in the clutch. 59% from the field. That’s third in the NBA. Minimum of 15 clutch shots. The only players ahead of him have taken less shots than him, I think it’s Anthony Edwards and Ryan Rollins. and they’ve taken I think 19 and 21 shots respectively. Flag has taken 27, but third in the NBA in percentage. He’s number four in the NBA in total clutch points scored. SGA has 80 in 50 minutes. Kate Cunningham has 67 in 48 minutes. Tyrese Maxi has 66 in 65 minutes. Cooper flag has 52 clutch points in 71 clutch minutes. Now, that’s not as good of a ratio as 67 to 48 or 80 to 50 or 66 to 65, right? Harden is next one below him. He’s he has 42 in 39 minutes. These guys are scoring like a point a minute or two points a minute or a point and a half a minute basically for Kaden SGA. Flag is not scoring a point a minute in the clutch, but he’s racking up points. He’s making his shots, shooting 59%. It’s not like he’s taken a ton of shots in these 71 minutes. He’s efficient. He’s just not as aggressive as the other stars, the Hardens, the SGA, the Cades, obviously the Maxis. Here’s the stat that blew me away, though. LeBron James rookie year until December 2nd, he played eight clutch games. Cooper Flag has played what? 17. He’s played 15. LeBron James 14 points. Six of 20 from the field. Six of 20. He had missed 14 shots in the clutch through December 2nd of his rookie year when he was 18. Cooper Flag 52 points, 16 of 27 from the field. The LeBron had 14 points in the clutch through December 2nd. Cooper Flag is 52 already. And it’s not like they took completely different amount of shots. LeBron James took 20. Flag has taken 27. That’s insane. By the way, LeBron James for his whole rookie season, 44 clutch games, scored 99 points. 34 of 99 from the field in the clutch in 164 minutes. But this is this is where we are. I talked about it in the postgame show where I was like the only player we can compare him to is LeBron James. That’s it. That’s the only player you can compare him to. By the way, 34 of 92 in the clutch, 37% from the field, LeBron James in the clutch during his rookie year. Flag is at 59% right now. So things could take a turn for sure, but this is something I’m watching right now because him being able to score in the clutch like this in the final five minutes of the game when it’s close is only showing good things for his future because that’s when everybody’s like playing their best, right? Incredible. Incredible stuff. Great stuff from him. Great stuff from Ryan Nemhard, too. Thanks for hanging out with us on the One More Thing bonus episode. Go listen to our other episodes. Check the link in the description for different ways to follow the show, including our text line. Guys, thanks so much for listening to Locked Time Apps. One more thing. Peace out.

Mavs will win it all with Flagg one day. He is not afraid of the moment
I don’t think we need to tank. We just need to stay healthy.
He's clutch at 18. What is going to be in 3 years? I told you guys you'd forget the last guy by Christmas. Cooper is just getting started.
The vibes around this team are much better than the Slippers, it's night and day. Maybe Clippers just need to fire the GM too
Was saying the Mavs should trade back into the 2nd rd to get Nembhard after watching his video. He maintains tempo, holds to offensive structure and gets the ball to the right guy. He's going to be a very good player, Can't wait to see him continue to build behind Kyrie.
I already knew how good he could be i was just wondering when they would play him.. he's the only true pg on the team
If we would have played him from the beginning of the season we would have at least 3 more wins
Don’t take away from Bwil because we definitely seen him get the rest of the team involved. AND YOU INDEED made a video about so don’t sit here and take away from bwil
No one is giving Nico the credit he deserves for unlocking Ryan by moving Luka….. “Re-Hire Nico””….. 😂😂
I dmed slightly that nembhard should start in October
I must admit, I’m a Luka fan so unfortunately I have to watch the Lakers but if I’m being honest, I miss watching / pulling for the Mavs. Also, I love you guys and think your show is one of the best out there in this genre. Keep killing it guys.
The “roots” of a professional sports team that “ tanks” are an “owner , general manager and head coach” that lacks skill in contrast to a team that demonstrates consistency in winning.
To be fair to Lebron on statistical comparisons as a rookie vs Flagg is the league scoring average for teams back then was 93ppg and the leagues best scorer was T Mac with 28ppg on under 42%fg
That being said Cooper is incredible for 18 years old and he’s on a trajectory where he could be a 1st Team All NBA player by age 21 or 22 and not even be in his prime yet like a young Lebron was .
We need to get off this tank talk! As someone else said, we just need to get healthy! We need to do what we can in the next month to win as many games as we can to stay close to the play ins. After that, we get Kyrie back!
