Jon Heyman breaks down Devin Williams going to the Mets #shorts

Not sure I ever saw such immediate negative reaction from both sides of town upon a signing. Uh Devin Williams agreed to a deal with the Mets. Fine relief pitcher overall uh with Milwaukee and then with the Yankees. Uh went cross town to the Mets and immediately Yankee fans were upset saying uh boy the Yankees are doing nothing. They’re not spending. They’re cheap. And Mets fans not thrilled either because they’re concerned that once they sign Devin Williams, it means they’re not signing Edwin Diaz as the beloved and very very effective closer of the team who was uh made the MLB second team. I think probably should have been the first team, but anyway, he is a superstar reliever and I get that concern. I’m not concerned about the Yankees. I do think that they will do big stuff this winter despite all of Hal’s talk about the bottom line and the fact that they haven’t done anything yet. Well, guess what? Most teams haven’t done anything yet. So, I’m not concerned about the Yankees. As far as the Mets goes, I’m only concerned if it does mean that Diaz goes elsewhere because Diaz really is the key to that bullpen. He was he’s been fantastic. Obviously, rough start his first year coming over from Seattle. People didn’t like that trade. Kelnik was going to Seattle. Ultimately, Kelnik has not panned out and Diaz has become a star, a major star in Queens. And uh it is necessary. I do agree with the Mets fans that they do need to sign uh Diaz. Uh if this is a sign that they’re not signing Diaz, that’s not good. But the immediate immediate response uh that we heard was that the Mets still are after Diaz and still very much involved. It does feel like Diaz isn’t close to a deal with the Mets or with anyone else. So, we shall see how that plays out. He wants 5 years around $und00 million, close to the same deal that he signed originally uh with the Mets, the 5-year deal where he had the opt out, and he did opt out. Um, I personally think a four-year uh compromise makes sense, and I hope they do work it out for the Mets sake. Uh, they do need him back. Uh, Diaz is one of the uh prime prime objectives of this winter and they do need to get it done. So, if this means they’re not getting Diaz, uh, it is a negative and I do get that, but I’m not sure it means that. And I do think the Mets are still involved with Edwin Diaz, which really is the big goal of this winter as far as that bullpen is concerned.

  1. Diaz sucked in 2024. He had a 3.52 ERA. He also had a 3.45 ERA in 2022 and a 5.59 (!!) ERA in 2019. Heโ€™s also 32 years old. Everybody needs to relax with Diaz.
