
When Matthew Schaefer’s mother, Jennifer, died of breast cancer in 2024, many reached out to offer him condolences.
Some were expected, but Schaefer also got support from an unexpected source: Marcus and Nick Foligno, two NHLers who had been through a similar experience.
The Foligno brothers lost their mother, Janis, to breast cancer in 2009.
Before hearing about his mother’s death, the brothers knew of Schaefer, whose family had a cottage near theirs.
But more than anything, they knew Schaefer’s pain.
