🚨DEVELOPING: Will Philadelphia Eagles SIGN CB Darius Slay After Release From Steelers?

[Music] We’re off and running here on Philadelphia Eagles. Now, my name is Chase Senior. As always, no matter where you are, how you’re tuned in, thank you so much for making today’s show a part of your day. Coming up, will the Eagles sign quarterback Darius Slay? He was just let go by the Pittsburgh Steelers. Philadelphia making a couple of roster moves. And I know that the Eagles have lost two games in a row and the Eagles defense in those two defeats has been bad, but these numbers for what Quinion Mitchell is doing this year, pretty incredible. He’s playing at an allpro level. How good has he been? We’ll get to that as well. Let’s begin here though to all of the real ones. I saw your comments yesterday and you were saying, “Thanks so much for the positive show and the positive reinforcement.” So, let’s run it back. And let’s spread that positivity across the entire state, all of Philadelphia, to get this Eagles team back on track. Here is the breaking news here on this Tuesday, December 2nd. The Steelers releasing cornerback Darius Slay after signing him to a one-year $10 million contract in free agency. Adam Shfter breaking the news saying this just moments ago that the Steelers and Slay have mutually agreed to part ways. Slay’s agents Drew Rosenhouse and Robert Bailey told ESPN. Slay, this is key, is interested in continuing to play and will consider signing with other teams, but his time in Pittsburgh has come to an end. I do believe that he has to clear waiverss, but if he does, could a reunion take place? Now, Slay has said that this season here in 2025 will be the final season of what has been a terrific career for him for a long time. One of the top corners in the game, an allp pro, a pro bowler, and for Philadelphia really helped to spark the defensive turnaround when Howie Roseman made that trade for him in that move with the Detroit Lions. and he ended up being a good leader for this team, a team captain. And it’s important to remember that when you have a C on your chest, players vote you as a team captain. So Slay had the respect of that locker room for his entire tenure with the Eagles. He was a healthy scratch against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday. So you had a feeling that maybe this could be coming. And clearly his stock was falling with Mike Tomlin’s team, which I think is a disaster. He hasn’t won a playoff game since 2016 and an Eagles reunion here. I think that it could happen. So that brings me to this and we’ll cut this up for a YouTube short. Put it on Tik Tok as well. Give me a follow at chase senior after Darius Slay got released by the Steelers. Will the Eagles bring him back? I think it makes sense for the birds for all of these reasons. Shy Alexander stepped away from the Eagles. I don’t think that he felt as though he was healthy enough to still play. And so with Howie Roseman trading for Alexander, he clearly saw cornerback as a need going into the NFL trade deadline. That hasn’t changed. Slay didn’t really fit what Pittsburgh wanted to do on defense, but Vicio knows what Slay can bring to the table, and he’s a great scheme fit for the birds. Slay’s stock kind of fell in part because the Steelers added Asante Samuel Jr. to the practice squad and then elevated him to the active roster. He played okay in the second half, although Buffalo ran the ball a ton on Sunday. And it just comes down to this. The Eagles could use a veteran presence. They could use a player who has familiarity with the scheme. And they could use some cornerback depth for their ball club right now. Slaying 2025, no doubt, really struggle with Pittsburgh. And he’s more of that zone corner. The Steelers wanted him to run a lot of man. Obviously, Fangio does a little bit of both. He’s also not the best tackler in the world. And so when he’s one-on-one on the outside, he misses some tackles when he has to make those types of plays. According to Pro Football Focus, sometimes you take these numbers with a grain of salt. He had an overall grade of 58.3, 71st among 110 corners so far this year. A coverage grade of 58.69th. It’s not awful, but obviously it’s not that good. He had given up 28 catches. I believe last year he gave up about 29 all year long. Missed tackles seven. A problem for a Steelers team that likes to play physical but doesn’t always live up to that brand. And interceptions PBS. No picks this year for Slay with the Steelers did have three pass breakups. The Eagles in part moved off of Slay because they had concerns about his knee which has been in a bad spot over the last couple of years. Plus he was a little bit expensive, right? $10 million for an older player with knee issues and so they let him walk. But I thought last year after an injury played 2023 where he wasn’t that good. Slay was a good player last year for this Eagle Super Bowl winning defense, the number one defense in the NFL. And you think about that secondary continuity this would give you if he plays a lot. Slay Coin Craig, you’re back to where you were last year. You made the move for Jaylen Phillips. That improved your pass rush. Now, obviously, you have to figure out your wos against the run because the Eagles defense hasn’t been able to stop the run against Dallas and Chicago in previous in back-to-back weeks. Slay last year 67.6 was the overall PFF grade, 48th, better than this year. Coverage grade 68.9, 35th starting caliber. He was third in the NFL in pass breakups. He’s always had really good ball skills. And then coverage snaps 442. And some fans might be saying, “What are we the retirement home? Are there bad optics here? Does this wreak of desperation? The Eagles brought Brandon Graham out of retirement. Now they could bring back Darius Slay.” I don’t look at it in that way. I think culture is always important. Having quality people in your business for your organization is something that you always want obviously, but it also comes down to this. Howie Roseman always wants to put together the best football team. The Eagles needed pass rushing depth. They brought back Brandon Graham. They made the trade for Jaylen Phillips. They traded for Michael Carter. This is what Howie does. So if Howie thinks that the Eagles need corner depth, Darius Slay makes a lot of sense for all those reasons that I mentioned. Some Eagles roster moves here today. The Eagles have opened up the practice window for safety Marcus EPS and they have released defensive back Perry Nickerson from the practice squad. EPS became a really good player for the Eagles. Was a starter on that 2022 defense, parlayed that into a big contract with the Las Vegas Raiders, was let go, didn’t really work out there, went to the Patriots, and now is back with Philadelphia. And why this is notable for the birds. Eagles are thin at the safety spot following the Andrew Makuba injury. He had to get that ankle surgery most likely out for the year. So you saw Cydney Brown getting a bulk of the snaps at that safety spot. Wouldn’t surprise me if Marcus Eps gets some snaps there because he’s serviceable and he’s trustworthy for Vic Fangio. And let’s round out with this. I know the Eagles have lost two straight games, but a bright spot on defense continues to be Quinan Mitchell. He is playing at a legitimate allpro level. Here’s where he ranks among all corners in football in year two. He is first in catch rate allowed, second in tight windows forced, second in average target separation, third in passer rating given up, tied for third in passes defended with 14 ball skills at Toledo really popped for me in the pre-draft. Tied for third in forced incompletions. He’s fourth in yak receptions allowed and no touchdowns given up on 467 coverage snaps. What a draft pick by Howie Roseman. And here’s the scary thing. I think that Quinn Yatam Bay can only continue to get better. There’s also this. He has covered the top three wide receivers in the league in receiving touchdowns. Devonte Adams is first. Aman Ros St. Brown is second. George Pickins third, combining against Quinan, those players for zero touchdowns in 66 matchups against that group. Fantastic player. And it’s really hard to play lock down corner on the outside. Quinn Yan did that last year. He’s doing it this year, but this year as well, he’s traveling with some of the top wide receivers in the game. Speed, physicality. This year, you’re seeing some more swagger that we’re seeing because last year was kind of a silent assassin. And the play is speaking for itself.
