Steve Gelbs reacts to the Mets’ deal with Devin Williams
Giving a relief pitcher by nature a long-term deal, a five-year deal, is risky. But when you’re in the position that the Mets are in right now, a win now team, the type of investments that they are making in the unit with a guy as unique as Edwin Diaz who has proven to be that guy in this city for this team, I would go that extra step to to grab him. and the Mets may, you know, it’s not definitely over right now, but again, just, you know, reading the tea leaves and and looking at the history, I would be somewhat surprised if they went and uh and got Edwin Diaz back and and gave him the five years. This feels to me like Devin Williams is more the replacement.

If this is true, how does it makes sense? Compare Diaz's season to Williams season. If the Mets are trying to "Win Now", wth would they give the closer job to Williams? Honestly, what's riskier, giving Diaz a 5yr deal or letting Diaz walk and sign Williams to replace him?
Why give him a 5-year deal if it doesn't require that? Just let him find out the most someone's willing to offer him and then offer him more. There's no need to set the market.

People Forget that Diaz Got Injured in the WBC and Missed the 2023 Season with the METS of Which He Was Credited with a Year of Service Time that Allowed Him to Opt-Out Despite Only Playing in the 2 of 3 Seasons prior. 🤨
