The Truth Behind the Pete Carroll–Chip Kelly Offensive Interference Claims #Raiders #petecarroll

Hello everybody. This is Hondao Carpenter, your Las Vegas Raiders beat writer on SI and the host of the Las Vegas Raiders insider podcast. And we’re glad to have you here tonight. We have two important subjects that we’re going to address. I told you I would rewatch the film, give you my evaluation on Caleb Rogers. I’m going to have that for you. Couple other players I’m going to talk about. Antonio. Uh I I think Muffy just really uh we’re going to talk about him and uh I also want to get into um uh Dylan Parm a little bit. And then the other one is is I I want to put the rest these Chip Kelly Pete Carol rumors. Was Pete trying to sabotage or meddle in the offense? I’m going to give you a definitive answer on all of that tonight. So, let’s get quickly started. I want to talk to you about uh Caleb Rogers. I thought he was really good for a rookie in his first start. He’s not a firstrounder. He’s third rounder. Still a high pick, but I thought he was very good. Um I will be honest with you, I thought he was a little better than I even thought he was going to be. um cuz he knows a lot of people been clamoring for him to play and there have been a lot of pressure. Thought he handled it well. Uh Antonio was very good as well. They uh they both played the position. I thought there were some things Antonio did a little better. Thought there were some things Rogers did better. Um Dylan Parm is my friend. I like him a lot. Wonderful man. He didn’t play well. He’s had a rough year and I if it’s me the last five games of the year, I’m putting those two at guard. And uh if you think Meredith’s your answer, then play Meredith or Will Putnham at center. And that’s how I would roll on these last five games. But I thought Caleb was was better than I had anticipated. Again, not pretending like he’s a Pro Bowler. He’s not. He’s a third rounder in his first start, but I thought he did very good. Now, I want to turn the attention to the Chip Kelly Pete Carol relationship. There’s a lot of stuff flowing out there. We’re going to dig right into it, and you will have a definitive answer tonight. So, let me say a couple things to you. Number one, and this is a big one, there was a lot of confusion around the Chip Kelly offense. I kept telling you it was nonsensical. There were things that we saw worked on in training camp that just disappeared and were not used during the season. It’s been very frustrating. I’m not a fan and I’m not um a member of the organization, but it’s frustrating because myself and the other beat writers told you a lot of really unique stuff was coming and then you don’t see it. Um I have not shared with you this story publicly, but I had a defender on this team tell me one time there was a change of possession and I think there was a timeout. I don’t know. I don’t know if it was a timeout or just a TV timeout, but there was a timeout and he overheard one offensive player asking another, “What the f was that?” And the player said, “I don’t even know. It’s something. I think that was from training camp.” And but I heard that heard about botched play calls. Um, a lot of that, a lot of that. Um, so that all when that stuff all started coming out, yeah, absolutely. I had heard that. Um, and then there started to be reports of, well, Pete meddled or sabotaged the offense, whatever. I can tell you categorically that’s not accurate. Now, I can give you some anecdotal information. Then I’m going to give you some actual definitive information. First of all, if Pete Carroll didn’t like the offense, he wouldn’t have been talking about it in his press conferences. Remember when he said, you know, that isn’t what we do. That was the game plan. Um, you may remember he talked about, you know, wanting to run the ball more. Um, you also heard him complaining that Jack Bash wasn’t playing more. If if if he is doing it, he wouldn’t have done that. But that’s all anecdotal. I’m gonna go farther here in a minute. Now, Lincoln Kennedy is one of the greatest raiders of all time. Also happens to be a a great, wonderful human and a friend. Love Link. Great guy. Um, and when Link says something, you need to just take it to the bank. Okay. Now, Link was on Q Myers. My good buddy Qers. Love Q. uh his locked on raiders podcast which is a great podcast. I have not heard it um but I got a wealth of email in the last probably 20 hours 24 hours about it in which and again I’m not quoting because I haven’t seen it but based on the email essentially Lincoln has said he heard that Pete and Chip were not communicative. Okay. So again, I didn’t hear exactly what Link said, but based on so many emails, I can tell you that’s accurate. Now, it wasn’t that they weren’t communicative because they didn’t like one another or one was trying to sabotage the other. I have complimented both men. Neither man pointed fingers at the other. Period. It did not happen. And both of them had ample opportunity with me to do that. And neither did. And that’s admirable because that’s how you know when you’re starting to lose a team. That did not happen. And again, both had ample opportunity to me to make that very clear and neither did. With that being said, uh I know that this was Chip Kelly’s offense. He was in charge of his offense. Would Pete talk about in the press conference? I want to run the ball more or this. Yeah, but it was Chip Kelly was the play caller. It was Chip Kelly’s offense. It’s why when I talked about Brennan Carol, I said, “These guys have bosses. These guys have bosses.” And but this was Chip Kelly’s offense. any type of reporting that that Pete um meddled or Pete did anything to sabotage it. I’m not calling the reporter out, but I’m calling out whoever the source is because I was directly involved and I’m not basing this on anything Pete Kelly Pete Kelly that Pete Carroll has ever said to me. I’m not going to tell you who told me because that’s not how this works. When someone talks to you off the record and gives you information, you protect that identity. If it’s off the record, you agree not to report it. If it’s if I don’t use your name, can I report it? My only rule with any source is if you get determined that you lied to me, I will expose you as my source. The person who told me definitively that Chip ran the offense has never come out and publicly denied that. So unless I find out they have, I won’t name the person. But I can tell you definitively definitively this was Chips offense. Now you got to look. Now, I have a sneaking suspicion who is behind those rumors, and I bet if I gave you a guess, you would not be able to guess who I think it is. But one of the things that I would just tell you is is that, you know, people like to rewrite history and to make themselves look good. And that’s not reality. That is why as a journalist I I I I want to be correct. I I don’t care wherever the the pieces go. You know, if the Raiders move on from Pete Carol, that’s fine. That’s their decision. I’m not a fan. I like Pete a lot. And I think Pete Carroll is one of the top five coaches to coach. I mean, he won a championship in college and he won a championship in the NFL and in both places had sustained competitive success. But he also had places he failed. Where has he failed? Everywhere he’s won a championship had one thing in common. And everywhere he failed had one thing in common. Do you know what those are? Buler. Buler. Where he has succeeded, he has been completely in charge. Where he has failed, he was not. And for people who point and that’s and this is a fine point. What about the last couple years in Seattle? Okay. ownership wanted to go in a different direction. So Pete exited. Everybody’s got bosses. But while he was the definitive driving force of where everything went, he won. And things begin to change is when there was a change then in focus at which Pete doesn’t control that. To me, you want to get rid of Pete. Well, why would you get rid of him when you haven’t allowed him to do what succeeds? It would be as foolish as as signing Gino Smith and running him completely out of the shock. Oh. Oh. Oh, yeah. They did that. Let him do what he’s done to succeed. Who are you going to replace him with that has his su his success? Getting somebody younger is not the answer because this is nothing to do with age. She’s not going through cognitive decline. But if but if you decide, you know what, we want to go in a direction Pete doesn’t want to go, I’m good with that. If Mark Davis says, “Hey, Pete, this is where I want to go. Can you get me there?” And Pete says, “No, bye Pete.” I have no problem with that. But if you know where you want to go, you got to give Pete Carol the chance to drive that bus and let him drive it. Because I’m telling you, talking to people around the league, this isn’t a good job. Do y’all remember me telling you this story, and I think you can even go find I think he’s probably told it a time or two on on YouTube where M. Brown, the former coach at North Carolina Tar Hills and Texas Longhorn. M. Brown talked about when he reviews a job, he doesn’t just look at it where’s it been the last three or four years before he takes a job. He looks at it where’s it been the last 20. Well, you go look at the Raiders job the last 20 years, it’s been a commitment to just be mediocre, baby, or be worse than mediocre, baby. and talking to people around the NFL. First of all, they’re all like I I I literally was talking Shannon and I were in the car talking yesterday with a National Football League general manager who said to to me and Shannon, “Please tell me there’s no way Pete’s losing his job there, is there?” And I said, “Well, your guess is as good as mine. Certainly somebody is leaking that he’s on the hot seat. And they go, “Who the blank would want that job?” He goes, “If you go do get somebody experienced, you’re going to have to overpay them and then promise them you’ll run it. And if you’re going to do that, they’re probably not as experienced or as good as Pete. Just let him do it. And if you’re not gonna go overpay, then you’re gonna have to go get a rookie, a firsttime coach where you can tell him what to do and then you run it, which is very low percentage of success. So, you’re probably going to be back here in a year or two. Cuz he’s like, any experienced coach is going to look at it and say, well, probably they’re going to be here again in a year. He goes, now you’ll find some guy who wants to be a coach so bad he’ll be desperate. He goes, “But if he’s a high quality, upand cominging guy, his people are going to advise him, don’t do it. Don’t do it.” He goes, “Because I don’t think Mark’s going to want to give anybody another long-term deal.” And I don’t blame him. It’s not a good job. It’s not a good job. I think it’s a good organization with a really good owner, but it is dysfunctional. They have got to get this place on the same page. And Mark Davis is the one that’s going to have to set that vision. Okay, this is what I want. And then if Pete’s on board, let Pete drive the train. You know, you give coaches 21 games for a reason. They get the first 17 to really evaluate a roster and really evaluate coaches. Some coaches don’t work. I know a guy who was a head coach uh that had had two different guys he had worked with before and they got on the same staff. They hated each other. He ended up firing both. And that just happens. And that’s when you bring in something new, there has to gel. Okay? I can tell you definitively Pete Carol wanted Patrick Graham. I know that factually. I know he wanted Robbie Leonard and I know there were other people on this staff that are here that he wanted. But there were also guys here Pete Carroll did not. They were not Pete Carol choices. Okay. You think the Raiders have learned now, Gatsy? Let your coaches pick their staff. Let your coaches pick their staff. Owners, general managers, stay out of it. I don’t care if they’re your buddies. They’ve got to be able to work with the head coach. Somebody’s got to be the boss. And listen, Chip Kelly and and Pete Carroll got along. It wasn’t a I hate you, you hate me relationship. And I’ve told you I credited them for how they got along, but Chip did his own thing. Now, obviously, he told the announcers on the first Monday night game. He talked to Tom Brady a lot, but there wasn’t a lot of communication with Chip. I mean, with Pete. I know that definitively. Definitively. So, as this whole thing and it becomes discombobulated, I’m just saying to you, you know who loses here? Raider fan. When does somebody speak up for Raider fan? What’s enough? I mean, how do you go through the having to fire John? That’s not true. Choosing to fire John, then you don’t stick with Rich, then you fire Josh, and then you you have a AP, you fire him. At at what point do you And and it goes back farther than that. That’s just what I’ve covered in almost seven years. At what point do you do you step back and say, “Come on.” I mean, this is ridiculous that you’re sitting here with a certain Hall of Fame coach and and you’re asking him to cook a meal and you’re not letting them buy the groceries. That is absurd. If you want a guy you control, you just don’t go get Pete. That’s fine. Why anyone thinks a Raider franchise, I mean, and let me just say something to you, okay? You go get a rookie coach, he’s got 21 games. So, anyone that’s fair isn’t even remotely evaluating him until 27. and the chances are already stacked against him. He’s going to be a failure. So, you’re setting you’re potentially setting the franchise up and keep pushing the narrative down the road. And sometimes you just bite the bullet. You just bite the bullet and you say, “Get it. Fix it.” I have said this, I maintain it. Mark’s a really good owner. There are a lot of owners that won’t spend money. Set the vision and go with it. And again, I’m not advocating that anybody get fired. John Spyitech was a rising upandcoming star. I many of you know I followed his career when he started with the Lions as an intern and Matt Millan and uh Bill Kenis um Sheldon White. I mean they nickname him the Whiz Kid. Tremendously talented young man. I don’t think there’s any need to fire him. I don’t think the need is to fire Pete Carroll. I think the need is Mark Davis sets the vision. Sets the vision. This is not a win now franchise. So if Pete says, “Hey, I don’t have any desire to take the two years to rebuild this thing.” Okay, appreciate you, Pete. Thanks for coming. Here’s your check for playing. God bless you. I think Pete wants to be here. I know Pete wants to be here. I know Pete wants to win with this organization. Then do what he has done to succeed. Everywhere he’s been the guy in charge, it succeeded. I addressed the tail end of Seattle. That’s Pete Carol. Get this franchise. But this is unfair. Five weeks of more combustable drama. You still have home games coming and your fans aren’t showing up. Give them a reason. Give them a reason. Give them a really good reason. Hey, we’re announcing Pete’s coming back. We’re going to set this like a flint and we’re going to go with it. Okay. Okay. But enough of the uncertainty. Enough of the drama. Listen, I love being a dad. I’m glad my daughters aren’t eighth graders anymore. This has become like an eighth grade drama. Oh, this guy’s sabotaged. No, he isn’t. No, he didn’t. And you know what? If Pete were, guess what? Pete has been involved in Patrick Graham’s defense. He has. I know that for a fact he has. Okay. I think Pete, let your coordinators coordinate. Kind of give him an idea what you want, but stay out of Graham’s kitchen. That’s what I would do. Again, this is my philosophy. Can you coach? They say yes, great. But he’s been significant. I significantly involved with Patrick voluminously more than with Chip. There’s your reality. And if I uh knew that Pete was more involved, I I would say that’s that that’s a that’s an accurate report. But I’m able to know definitively that it was Chips’s offense. I just think that’s important to to set that out there and set it straight. This isn’t fair to the fans. This is totally unfair to the fans. Now, going back to the team real quick, I I told you three practices in a in a holiday week. There was not going to be a lot of change. You saw about a one degree shift, but this is a big shift. I think you’ll probably see a couple more degrees of change this week. I’m going to ask Oie on Thursday about how much change you can truthfully expect to see in a week two, but you still have the same roster. You’re not going to go out and change a ton of philosophy. You’re just not you don’t have the practice time. You’re going to have more situations a guy coming out come up the field. What was that? You just can’t. I know that that that’s nonsensical to fans, but understand collective bargaining. There are time restrictions on practice and everything else. You just cannot do it. But I’d love to see Antonio and and uh Caleb as the starting guards, Jordan or Will at center. I’d love to see Charles Grant out there. going to ask Pete on Friday more about the the about the personneling decisions. Let let him go through another week of practice and watch. But um we’ll certainly uh keep our eyes on that. But this is a time to watch now. It’s a time to keep your eyes close on what’s going on, what’s happening, what’s maneuvering behind the scenes. A lot going out here. It is unfathomable to me to be a couple weeks away from year seven and still the story is dysfunction. Doesn’t make any sense to me. Remember si.comnlraersi. Thanks everybody.

  1. Why is John Spytek no where to be found in this conversation? He single handily made the team worse by not resigning key players and replacing them with no name under achievers! No excuses for his under achieving draft picks also. Ashton was an okay pick but we all knew that Oline was the biggest need.

  2. Honda we only care about Geno Smith is he going to get cut , is it going to sit the bench , is Pete getting fired that's all we want to know we don't care about anything else

  3. I love when Hondo talks about Brendan Carroll and says he has bosses. He's the O-Line coach, that doesn't excuse the poor blocking fundamentals the Lincoln Kennedy talked about.

  4. I’m about done listening to Hondo, I’m not gonna be gaslighted into believing the game hasn’t passed Pete Carroll by and that he was dealt a bad hand. BS!! This man is literally trying to pull the wool over our eyes and make us believe Pete didn’t make decisions putting together his coaching staff and on player personnel. We are seeing the exact reason why Seattle pushed him out. It’s ridiculous to think that anything will be different if we keep him next year. And as long as his sons, Brennan and Nate are here, the players will regress and will never develop. Fire all the Carrolls and stop trying to cover for their failures Hondo!!!

  5. The sad thing is Mark is always listening to too many people and doesn’t have any vision by himself! , No you shouldn’t keep firing coaches but with a team’s head coach that has looked even worse than a inexperienced AP , how to you figure he is the coach to Keep ! AP is the one that should have been given more time because of his inexperience. Pete is not a rookie head coach who has made crucial mistakes in allowing his sons to switch the line around that has caused more problems 😂

  6. Hondo idk how delusional you are
AP was given power to bring in his coaching staff and since he couldn't get kingsbury after he walk out he wanted a 3 year they only wanted give him 2
    He hired Getsy
Pete Carroll was somewhat infor Chip kelly and since he couldn't get Robert Saleh but left to 49ers he stuck with Patrick Graham since he didnt get a HC job
If anything this defense is be run by Pete rarley Patrick Graham

  7. Also they didnt fire Jon gruden they had to but Gruden resign he step down because of the leak emails which is what Pete Carroll needs to do step down.
Bisaccia obviously you know Mark davis go for big names Josh mcdaniels a disaster needed to be fire. AP shouldn't have been interm HC or HC should of been Patrick Graham. For Pete Carroll he was 3rd or 4th choice to be the HC come on man get on the game do your research and job right like Mitchell renz make sure you listen or write down notes from press conferences.

  8. Shame on hondo an the rest of the raiders media soft coward pathetic questions where’s the Same energy in the press conference what you guys are scared of mark Davis a man who profits on al Davis success an slogans just win baby just profit for him an the rest of this pathetic goofy ownership this whole organization needs a cleanse from top to bottom an it should start with new ownership

  9. Pete tried to use his same offensive scheme from the 2023 Seahawks. He brought in the QB from the Seahawks, signed multiple Seahawks players, and his son as O-line coach and thought he would be able to win and realized that this was a disaster 1/3 of the way through the season and there’s nothing he can do about it now. Chip Kelly is not the issue. PETE IS THE ISSUE!

  10. I thought Pete was driving the train, he chose for PG to stay, he chose to hire Chip, he chose to put his son as OLC. He chose to bring in Gino. How did this all work out. I don't understand how Pete is not being allowed to coach this team to his liking

  11. Hondo is trying to keep his job hence the softballness of his questions and tiptoeing around
If I was Hondo, I’d be in Greg Papa’s shoes and not even involved with the Raiders 🤦

  12. 100%. Pete will build a winning culture with 100% control over everything. Anything less than that just keep letting the crazies run the asylum. The raiders were never going to fix the dysfunction in 1 year.

  13. Your losing credibility as a reporter and becoming more a spokesperson for the Raiders. First off reports have come out of Pete running a Shane Waldron 2023 style offense and handicapping and scapegoating Chip Kelly cos Pete Carroll has no accountability for himself, his son Brennan or his QB Geno Smith. Second you can just look at the offense on the field for the Seahawks in 2023 and the Raiders this year, also Chip has come out and said as much and that he wouldn't take the Raiders job if he had known this ahead of time of Pete wanting control over the offense. This kind of journalism is partly why the Raiders are at where their at, downplaying Pete's favoritism, his lack of accountability and his impact on all parts of the team, just how you propped up Geno in pre season just how you did Gardner Minshew the season before. The lies need to stop there needs to be honesty and there needs to be accountability put in Pete and Geno cos right now there is zero

  14. Hondo respectfully you keep saying things like “I can tell you DEFINITIVELY” and every time you say that you back up your statement with no evidence and no source. Your words are empty brother

  15. It may have been Chips offense but its Petes Team. After seeing Geno in shotgun so many times he should of stepped in. I agree we can't keep firing coaches but why are we holding onto a 74 year old coach for a rebuild. Stop kissing Petes butt please.

  16. The only they will keep Pete Carroll is to revise his contract and strip him of all powers on offense personnel including the offensive line coordinators . He will have to take it or leave.

  17. Hondo, i need help with these questions: 1) Has Seattle improved or regressed post Pete Carroll? 2) your quote, “if you’re allowing it, then you’re coaching it.” The team has regressed; could that be from poor coaching? 3) You stand up here and proclaim this is Chip's offense, his first choice for run game coordinator and OL coach is Pete's son? 4) We draft the #1 center in college football, the Rimington Award Winner, and we decide to make him a guard and replace him with someone who has never played the position? These questions are just the tip of the iceberg. IT absolutely amazes me how you can defend this.

  18. The younger players look better.Pete and his staff have been wrong. This whole time they messed up this whole season because of their ego. It's time to go pete

  19. You are giving all the reasons why Mark Davis should sell the team. He is incompetent but you keep saying that he’s a wonderful owner. You are talking out both sides of your mouth Hondo. Pick one and stick with it.

  20. Not true. How can you say this is not a great job. This is a great job. But if they offered me a job like this That was this challenging it would be a great job. Hey at one point everyone loses perspective. Nothing about his past. It's a high demanding job. So I disagree with your comments

  21. Glaze Needs to take a seat. Or move to guard. Pete carroll is the head coach. He could have done anything he wanted to do.Switched upThe offensive line told chip kelly how he wanted the offense run.But pete gets up there and throws everyone under the bus.Besides himself and his sons

  22. Isn't Hondo the guy who said if its one or 2 players screwing up its on the player. If its the whole team its on the coaches? This is on Pete.

  23. Hondo sounds like a winey B. If Pete's such an icon why would he agree to take a job where he doesn't pick his staff or has final say. No matter how you slice this its on Pete.

  24. Rogers was absolutely fine at Guard – exactly as all of us fans expected… and exactly how Pete Carroll said he wouldn't be, as he sat on the bench for 11 games while Pete's awful veterans stunk it up.
It's pretty clear that Pete Carroll can no longer assess NFL player talent – he has made most of the players worse, and he continues to start bad players over young players with upside – the team CANNOT IMPROVE with Pete as HC.
