Dallas Mavericks Secretly Stumbled Upon A STAR!

Jason Kid has finally let Ryan Nemhard loose and he is cooking. The last three games he’s playing over 20 minutes. He even played over 30 yesterday against Denver in his careerhigh game. 28 points, 10 assists. And before these last three games is for six games, he was only playing 10 minutes a night and usually was a DMP. And during this short stretch, he’s also been starting, averaging 17.7 points, 5.7 assists to only 1.3 turnovers per game, and making three threes per game. And he has that natural point guard feel. He kind of does a Jason Kid Steve Nash impression on this play. Jamal Murray forcing him left. So he’s like, “Okay, I’ll take it.” And then the speed burst to get baseline. And then he just keeps his dribble alive. keep his dribble alive and then locate Anthony Davis who’s open for a mid-range jumper. His pace of play really sticks out to me. He never gets sped up here. Murray gets decked by the initial screen and really he’s just chilling the whole play, taking his time running the action and then a bit faster on this crossover to the middle. and he knows Murray just wants to contest. So, he pump fakes and then fades away to get clearer vision on that basket, get away from that contest as a smaller player. And you can tell he’s really comfy with that shot because it’s nothing but net. And since starting, you could tell NBA teams have no clue who he is. Like, he’s not really on the scouting report. So, as a result, they’re helping off of him and it’s resulting in easy, you know, warm-up jump shots for him. And right now he’s making them pay every single time pretty much. The only knock on him that you would hear out of college is he’s small. But the thing is he has an edge to him. He’s very tough. He’s kind of like Chris Paul Kyle Lowry. That’s his style. He’s not afraid to, you know, go for a rebound next to Yonas Valentunis 7footers thick. He pushes the rock, creates a shot for DLO if he wants it. Amazing job by Dwight Pow catching going right into a handoff type thing. decking his defender and that’s the advantage he needs. Mid-range shot, nothing but net. I mean, his makes he he’s literally kissing the net. It’s beautiful. His slow to fast game is really impactful. He knows when to attack fast early on. He’s just trying to let the play develop. So, he’s just taking his time. But as soon as Cooper creates contact with Murray, he is upping that speed while going right into the jump shot. His third quarter, he really took over. I mean, it seemed like every play he was involved and he just gets AD in his spot here. Floats off the basketball. The defense is so worried about Davis that he just gets a free three eventually. Nuggets were running a zone and what do you know? They moved the ball well. He gets another free three. And really watch his pick and rolls. It seems like every single time he has the defender on his back after he’s always rubbing the shoulder of the screener. On top of that, he’s going from slow to fast. So, not only does he have him on his back, but look, there’s a bunch of separation in there. So, now Jokic is really in a tough situation because if he commits to Nemhard, AD is free and loose and he’s been cooking all game. So, naturally, he’s just going to give up this midi. But, Nemhard doesn’t miss this. And now, we can really see the change of his speeds be a weapon in transition. He’s going fast right away after this behind the back. He’s kind of coasting. Takes his foot off the gas a bit, but on that second dribble, he locates Dwight Pal setting a highway scream. So, he explodes to that open space and keeps it in the left hand the whole entire time. On this one, Denver’s defense actually confused the Mavericks. They were kind of just holding the ball. All of the sudden, six seconds on the shot clock. No worries. We get the softest switch imaginable because they don’t believe he has this type of range. Well, guess what? He does. Now they set up a screen at the logo cuz he’s getting pressured. He stops on a dime. Trying to go right, but the defender takes it away. So, how about this crossover? And once again, his defender is hitting that screen. Major separation created instantly. Slowing up again. He sees some space that he likes and he’s exploding. He did a push dribble and kept it in the right the whole time. I feel like every dribble, every movement from him has a purpose. And in this third quarter, he actually started to get respect. Joic now getting up on the screen. Jones is in help taking away the roll. So guess what? He hits Cooper flag. He makes the right read. And then the last play I want to go over in the fourth quarter. This felt like the dagger. Mr. Speed behind the back. It seems like he’s going into that pick and roll now because he’s been doing that all game. So the quick rejection, the left to right crossover works to perfection. The defender stays attached though. But also, the defender is still in recovery mode. Well, he’s already into his jumper. Full speed. That that’s just a work of art. And honestly, I don’t know what the defender could have done better. That was good defense, just way better offense. I’ve been a Ryan Nemhard stance since summer league. I I just watch him play and I’m like, “Yeah, this dude has it.” So, it’s good to see that Jason Kid has finally let him loose. And all of a sudden, with Cooper finding his groove, Ryan inserted to the lineup. I mean, Mavericks are fun to watch lately. That’s all I got, though. I want to hear your thoughts below. 1. These undersized players can be such a steal because people discount them just on their lack of height. If Ryan was 6 foot 2 he's going in the first round 100%. But instead he's 5'11" and goes completely undrafted. Lowkey such a gem and we knew that since he popped off in preseason. He was injured/sick for a while so we didn't see him. But in the starting lineup he's been amazing so far.

  2. We basicallly got another Jalen Brunson, except Ryan was not drafted. The kid can be an allstar. Need to sign him to a 4 year deal and not let him hit FA.

This is what Dallas has needed all year to pair with Coop, an actual PG.
Imagine when they get KY back. A fully healthy Dallas squad is top 6 in the NBA. Their defense has been top 5. They have had 18 clutch games. Just hadn't been able to close em out, as they were missing AD and KY. However, it let the other guys, especially Coop, develop. The team is a matchup nightmare for any team in the league. It will all come down to if they can stay healthy. Mainly Davis and the 2 bigs.

  3. to clarify, nemby was out with a knee sprain for a few weeks & due to the nature of his 2-way contract i think he's only allowed to be active in 50 games. we obviously just got news exum is out for the season, so hopefully we can get some exception to waive exum & make room for a standard contract for him

  4. Great analysis. I think he is more PG than Brunson, specifically meaning floor general. Brunson is more of a deadly ISO scorer that really can’t be guarded. He does have a great feel for the game. I can see him being a Smaller Deron Williams but better on defense

  5. He actually kinda plays like Steve Nash…stays low and keeps his dribble, not afraid to go in and come back out of the lane if nothing is there, and great stop start

  6. Last person I remember wearing number 9 in a Mavs jersey was Tony Romo 😂 jokes aside, Ryan seems super solid. Take him over D’lo for sure and even start him over B Will.
