THE DETROIT RED WINGS SHOULD BE THANKFUL RIGHT NOW… SEBASTIAN COSSA IS ON FIRE (Prospect News)
[Music] I think at this point the Detroit Red Wings should be thanking their lucky stars at a number of things. Firstly, it’s that help is on the way. Secondly, it’s that said help is actually unaffected by the current tribulations of the team. And thirdly, seems like this guy can potentially help out the Red Wings for a long, long time. Today, my friends, we are talking about an announcement posted out there by the Grand Rapids Griffins earlier yesterday. Thanks to their sponsor, Howie’s Hockey Tape, whom I normally would not go out there and shout out, but they have a cool graphic, so uh yeah, I thought it was cool. AHL Player of the Week, Sebastian Kosa, who went 3-0 in the most recent week’s worth of games with a 133 goals against, a 945 save percentage, and one shut out. Goodness, man. The Detroit Red Wings are in some pretty good hands when it comes to goalending. And it’s not just because of Sebastian Kosa. You look at who is in the system. I mean, okay, Carter Gillander, you know, yeah, I didn’t think I’d mention his name right off the bat, but he’s been looking pretty okay so far this season. Maybe not the best in the ECHL, but he actually had a pretty good Grand Rapids Griffin stint. You also have yourselves Mau Postava, whom the Red Wings were able to win out and get onto their team after a series of NHL teams interviewed him. And then Sebastian Kosa with a 942 save percentage in nine games leads the Griffins in all goalender statistical categories. Not to mention Trey Austinine who is chilling in the NCAA and who is also expected to becoming great too. I will say for all the tribulations the Red Wings exhibit with the main squad when it comes to goalending, the fact that there are so many positive quality goalenders that are developing and going on their own path. Nobody’s being rushed, it is so refreshing to see. And I think part of me does wonder like, hey, the contrast is quite heavy, isn’t it? Red Wings goalending in the now isn’t really doing all too hot. You talk about Gibson, talk about Talbot, these guys have been problematic to say the least this season. But the AHL has some good names. The NCAA has a name or two. I mean, the Red Wings can’t run with Talbot and Gibson forever, can’t they? And so I get that you can say that there is wonder at what can be for the Red Wings and their net minding situation. And it does open the door to asking whether or not maybe Sebastian Kosa should be given a shot this season. Maybe he can go on some sort of a Jordan Bennington like run in 2019. Maybe he can be the Matt Murray of this generation where he just gets called up and then all of a sudden, wait a minute, he’s amazing and he backs stops the Red Wings to prosperity in the first year of his NHL career. Or maybe he does a hamburger and actually plays well enough to get the Wings into the playoffs, but then doesn’t end up winning the gosh darn thing. I don’t know. Is that possible? Do you want to rush the guy? If the Red Wings were to call up Sebastian Kosa, I would honestly argue that it might not necessarily be strictly due to need. You can say that with a 942 save percentage and a 156 goals against in nine games played this season, you can make the debate that Kosa is ready. And it’s really funny because Sebastian Kosa, as we had said, he was named the AHL’s player of the week with a 945 save percentage and a 133 goals against. Those numbers are just slightly better than what he’s been doing all season long. And I get it. You know, it’s not like he’s played every game. He’s got nine. There have been 18 Grand Rapids Griffin’s games so far. So, he’s only played half of the games. But he’s still looking incredibly solid. And it’s to a point now where I think if Fred Wings fans wanted to converse about pulling him up and just letting him get that opportunity in a dire situation, I don’t think it would be the most unreasonable thing in the world. Now, you can say that calling up Sebastian Kosa and hoping that he can replicate the success he has had in the AHL in the NHL at this point with this Red Wings team in front of him. You can say that’s a bad move. And I would not necessarily disagree. When you look at the defensive quality of the Red Wings at this moment in time, you take a look at just how they’ve been trying to do about their business. They haven’t been looking great. And sure, you can say that the goalending has not helped them out in any respect in that regard. We’ve already discussed how Detroit has the worst goals saved above expected metric in the National Hockey League, I think it is, and their PDO is really bad. They’re not getting saves that they need to get. But at the same time, I think Wing’s defenseman can be a little bit better at this stage. And now can be seen as a vulnerable time in Sebastian Kos’s development where if he’s playing for a team that kind of lets him hang out to dry a little bit, that might be more detrimental to his prospect development than if he just stayed in the AHL and dominated. Because if he’s able to stay in the AHL and dominate, then that’s fine. Let him do that. just be confident in the guy that’s already there. But if you want to climb some of these other mountains, you want to give more of an opportunity to the other goalenders that are in Grand Rapids and you want to see if Kosa can sustain at the national level, then maybe giving him an opportunity, a small sample size, isn’t the worst idea in the world. Heck, it can’t be worse than John Gibson at the moment, right? And besides, at the end of the day, the guy’s 23 years old. You know how long it takes for goalies to make the NHL and actually establish themselves as some of the top players in the world at that position. They don’t usually come in when they’re 18, 19, 20 like some of these other players. No, goalenders take a lot more time to develop. You won’t normally see a guy step in and become an immediate number one player. And by the time they do become a number one starter, they’re probably 25, 26. That’s like the general age range for goalenders to take their time and become what they could be at the national level. Now, there are of course other options and other young guys who have started to look super good and who have been dominant in a way that maybe we kind of expected out of them. I’m thinking about the big three. Spencer Knight in 2019, Yaraslav Ascarov in 2020, and then Yasper Walstead in 2021. Yeah. No, Sebastian Koso was also 2021. I get that. But hey, Walstead was seen as the top goalending prospect in that season. The fact that Koso went first over Walstead does continue to blow my mind. But all three of those guys, Ascarov, Walstead, Knight, they’re looking very good at the National Hockey League level this season. You just go over to the league itself, you’re seeing a bunch of young dudes showing off in a way that we didn’t really expect right off the bat. I mean, Devin Kulie is the number one goalender right now in overall save percentage, but at the end of the day, is Sebastian Kosa a guy that should be treated with that same opportunity? Do you look at San Jose and say, “Yeah, look at that. As a Scarov is playing, he’s got a 910 save percentage so far.” You have Yes Walstead. He’s at a 938 safe percentage with the Wild this season. He is outstanding. and Spencer Knight is bringing the Blackhawks to new heights. Can you do the same with Sebastian Kosa? I mean, I guess technically you should be able to since they’re all kind of in the same age range there, but then again, do the Red Wings need to do this. And do you want to dethrone one of Talbot or Gibson by giving their opportunity to one of these younger guys? What kind of message does that send? I wonder. So, with all that in mind, you can let me know your thoughts in the comment section below. How do you feel about this overall idea here? Do you think it is appropriate for the Detroit Red Wings to maybe make a call up for Sebastian Kosa? A guy who was just recently announced as the AHL’s player of the week. He’s been dominant all season long. Question is, will he continue to dominate if and when he gets called up to the Detroit Red Wings, whether that’s this season or beyond. Let me know your thoughts in the comments section below. I hope you enjoyed this British Ash and bye. [Music] [Music]

If Cossa allowed double the shooting percentage for the Wings that he's allowed for Grand Rapids, he would still be significantly better than John Gibson.
Cossa choked in preseason the last two seasons. He has a total of 1 good NHL performance. I hope for the best but hes very unproven.
Augustine is better than Cossa.
They need to get Cossa up now! Augustine will be in Grand Rapids next year!
No mention of Rudy Guimond?
Put cossa in a package fot Quinn Hughes
I love the future goalie prospects Red Wings have & would consider moving one in a deal for a Hughs or Clarke
Let's go Red Wings!!
You mean Marc Andre Fluery waited to join the penguins?
I hope both Cossa and Augustine work out. But Augustine is starting to make me nervous if he doesn't sign soon. Id love to have 1A and 1B. Build them both up and deal one for something good
This is how we all felt about Mrazek too. That didn't work out either.
It doesn't matter what goalie you bring up to Detroit, they're gonna get shelled because of the terrible defense outside of the Top 3.
Detroit is where goalies go to d!e. This coming from a Wings fan.
Lol. You're dreaming if you think anyone is paying that for Cossa…
I wouldn’t mind seeing Cossa get called up for a game or two but I’d definitely let him keep cooking down in Grand Rapids for now. Let him build that confidence.
