Toronto Maple Leafs V Florida Panthers| Live Gamecast and Chat

more holiday for less and Matthews is on it. You know, looking at where we’re at in the standings and just how important these games are, especially against your own division. Um, I don’t think there’s really any extra motivation needed. We know we have to be ready to play. They’re a very detailed, structured team, physical team. Um, got a lot of depth throughout their lineup. So, um, you know, for us, it’s just all about, uh, competing out there. um setting each other up for the next shift, taking care of pucks and um you know, just making sure that we’re winning the net fronts as well. The last game had so many positives and coach Buru is hoping that means something. We just got to build off last game. We did a lot of good things with the puck and we’re going to have to do that again tonight and you know, even looking back to the playoffs last year, we had some real good success against them in that series and and then not some not so good success. So, there’s certain things that we can do tonight that uh will give us success, and that’s what we’re going to focus on. Meanwhile, on the other side, Brad Marshand likes this rivalry. Well, yeah, it’s exciting. I mean, anytime you play a team uh in playoffs, especially a couple years, um you know, close together. That that’s where rivalries are built and and uh um obviously we’re two teams that uh should both be doing a little bit better than we are and and you know, you’re looking to build your game. Um they’re looking to do the same and just seems like the intensity in these games always rise a little bit. Welcome to Leafs game night. Jim Tatty and former NHL Anthony Stewart reporting. Stu, how are you? I am doing well. How’s everything going in Tatland? Well, got a little tentative off the top there, guy. Everything okay? Yeah, I’m doing well. I’m doing well. I was actually so excited my uh my voice was so high pitched you can barely hear me. Well, let’s let’s set the table here. Uh Simon Beno back in the lineup tonight. missed for personal reasons on Saturday. Brandon Carlo suffered a setback in recovery, returned to Toronto to see a specialist and will miss some extended time. Now, Anthony Stolar has no real improvement according to Buru today. No timeline. He’s already missed the last eight games and tan if also no timeline in his return. And on the other side, I mean, you want to talk about an extensive injury listed, which is one of the reasons why the Panthers have stumbled out of the starting gate. Looster Ryan hasn’t resumed skating yet, missed the last six games. Uh and so he is weak to week. Cole Schwind placed on the injured reserve Monday with a broken arm. Two to three month recovery. Matthew Kachchuck has resumed skating uh sometime in December. He’s back. Bararkov is gone for the season. Uh Thomas Nosk out with a knee injury expected back mid December. Kulakov another three months. Uh Gajovich is is out for the next two months. I mean that’s an extensive list 100%. So, what’s the Maple Leafs excuse, right? But again, ultimately, you know, injuries plays a part in today’s NHL and you have to find a way to uh sort of weather the storm. So, you know, from a Maple Leaf perspective, right? It’s a more opportunity for other guys to step up and have an extended role. I’m sure we’ll get into it in a minute here, just the third line, getting a couple extra minutes and and and having impact, right? Doi being bumped up to the top line. So, it’s an opportunity for some other guys. And uh in talking about the Florida Panthers, too. Some guys have struggled without having a Kachchuck or having a uh you know, a Barov in the lineup, right? And they’re sort of pushed up the lineup. You’re looking at a Sam Bennett who’s only got six goals and six assists. And you’re seeing Brad Marshian uh lead the charge as long as uh Sam Reinhardt as well. So ultimately with the injuries, uh yes, you’re going to miss these players, but it’s an opportunity for other guys to show that they could be everyday NHLers with a bigger role. Well, then let’s go back to Saturday where everything worked. I’m not going to tell you they they played a perfect game cuz they did give up some opportunities, but Hilderby was really strong in goal, but but the look of the team like you saw the full units one line playing off the uh the line that preceded it. I mean, there was a good build there, wasn’t there? Yeah, it was it wasn’t uh and that’s sort of been sort of the story in the MO with the group, right? You know, kneelander’s been having a great year on pace to have a, you know, well over 100 points. Same thing with Matthew Ny extending his um you know, from last year as well, too. So, you know, typically it’s the top guys that have sort of been, you know, writing the ship with this group along with John Tvaris. But, um, in today’s NHL, you know, you want to win 45, 55, 60 games. You need a couple easy wins. You need to find a way, uh, to cruise to a 52, a 51, 72 victory. And it just seems that Toronto, every game’s been scratching and clawing going into overtime or, you know, going six on five with three, four minutes left to try to get back into the game. But when you have all three, four lines contributing not just on the on the score sheet, but getting involved, cycle plays, sustaining pressure, uh that’s how you uh get these outcomes. So, it was a great job uh by the third line scoring uh three goals. But uh for me, it wasn’t luck. It’s when they’re playing to the best of their ability. You’re seeing Joshua go to the net. McMahon uh Wah, you know, getting at the end of the power play there, scoring a goal with a beautiful pass from Max Doi. So, for me, uh the process is there a little bit better over the last couple games. And let’s not we’re not going to forget about the Montreal and a couple of those other stinkers here, but they’re trending in the right direction uh with a convincing win against the Pittsburgh Penguins Saturday night. Well, it’s almost like they got the blueprint. So, here’s what we want you to do. And they actually did it, didn’t they? Yes. Finally, right, Ge. But it’s it’s a lot easier said than done. And sometimes uh you know, it’s easy to find excuses, but that’s where you sort of lean on some of the leadership group and and uh you know, you go on the road and you have a good time and you know, you don’t necessarily listen to the social media. you find a way to step up and get it done. No one’s going to feel sorry for this group. I’m sure they don’t feel sorry for themselves, but uh for them it’s about the process and the system and uh I was really impressed uh with their performance Saturday night. And remember, they got the saves. They got the saves and that was the main thing as well. That that’s huge because we don’t know how long Stolars is out and this kid has come a long way even since his recall from the Marlies this year. He looks good. Yes. And uh I I like the fact that they didn’t just throw him right into the fire right away, right? they got uh Primo to sort of be the sacrifice and you know I know it’s unfortunate that he didn’t perform well but uh they probably anticipated maybe without some of their top guys and they’re going to be struggling a little bit so we don’t want to kill the young guys confidence so let’s bring him along slowly and find a way to sort of manage his starts and you sort of sort of saw a precursor what this player can be and for me yes he made some tremendous saves uh you know in was it 31 uh saves I believe on 33 shots uh but for me on my notes and watching that game the other night you know It’s 2-1 near the end of the second period. Um Pittsburgh goes in on a breakaway. No one would fault him for making uh that that puck going in the net, but he makes a big big save. It’s 5-2 in the third period after Crosby scores. Malcin almost scores to make it 5-3. He makes a big big save. So it’s not the quality of the save, it’s the timing of the saves, and you know, I think he kept uh that game as an easy runaway just based on his performance Saturday. Yeah, just to the eye test, he looks good. Now I got to squeeze this in here because this is good for our listeners and it’s timesensitive. So, the Toronto Police will be taking on the Montreal Canadians this Saturday at Scotia Bank Arena. Here’s your chance to win a pair of tickets to the game. Yes, guy. Your chance to win a pair of tickets to that game prior to tonight’s puck drop. So, you’ve got second Well, you got minutes here. Not not seconds, you got minutes, but you got to get on this. Prior to tonight’s puck drop, text your name and your score prediction for the Leafs against the Panthers. This game that we’re going to do now, you you text in uh your score prediction to 1050. That’s your name, your score prediction for the Toronto Police against Florida Panthers game tonight in Sunrise, Florida. You do that and send it to 1050. You could win a pair of tickets to Saturday’s Leafs game as they welcome the Montreal Canadian and Scotia Bank Arena. Wow, that’s an offer, isn’t it? It’s great. Are we eligible? No. Sorry, guy. I’ve already got tickets. I’m going to be in the stands, right? I’ll be up top. They weren’t cheap. Popcorn tell you they were they were not cheap. This is a great offer. Oh, man. All right, I’m going to I’m going to What’s that what’s that uh number again? 1050. Okay. St. Oh, you’re going to get you’re going to get flagged if you do that the you’ll set off some sort of alarm and you’ll knock us off the air. That’s hilarious. Yeah. So, I mean, the Panthers are are injury r, but they have a template for how to play. And quite frankly, if you’re on that roster, you’re playing a certain way or you’re not on the roster. So, I I’m not expecting any breaks tonight. Uh no. Right. This is the team that’s gotten by uh you know sort of on their systems and they’ve sort of have found money in players that sort of you know perform outside their capit. Yes, Bennett signed the big big deal but you’re looking at guys like Adri Girer uh Verhagi Boquist and Mosovich you know guys like that. And then you know you look like guys that got a second lease on life and Seth Jones and Mikola and Forsling. So again I think a lot of those guys are almost the quote unquote Vegas misfits where they found a second home in Florida and they’re not taking anything for granted and it’s a well coached team. We all know about Paul Maurice and what he brings with regards to structure and systems, but he gets the team fired up. And let’s remember, he was the former coach of the Maple Leafs. He wants to beat them every single time. So, they’re definitely going to be motivated. Do I think it’s going to be the uh the thriller in Manila. It’s going to be a big big battle. No, but I think it’s going to be a hard fought-nosed hard-nosed uh fought game uh tonight between Toronto and Florida. Well, look, because of the scar tissue from the Leafs elimination, I mean, it’s going to take a long time to forget how the Leafs performed in games five and seven on home ice against the Panthers. Um, but you I mean, you have to tip your cap to the Panthers. Three straight Stanley Cup finals. They won the last two. This is a story that that somehow seems to get better. It it doesn’t seem that way at the start of this year, but but check in in the spring. Somehow they’ve been able to advance this in each of the last three years. That’s nothing short of phenomenal in today’s NHL. Yes, they’ve uh they’ve uh mastered the art of throttle hockey, when to put your foot on the gas and when to let go, right? And it’s funny. I I’ve seen all the headlines, you know, is Babroski uh finished. He’s got uh uh 82 save percentage and he’s let in eight goals in his last 35 shots. We’ve know we know what that means, right? We know that means he’s going to be dialed in. Uh but I think, you know, so this team right now Oh, you said it, so you broke it. So, you broke the curse. But uh um so I think with this uh Florida Panther group, what’s surprising for me is not just the physical fatigue, the mental fatigue of playing well into June. I remember as a player, it’s it’s March or February. You’re like, “Oh man, this season is too long.” I’ve never had the luxury of playing to June, but to be able to do that three years in a row just doesn’t show the physical specimens that they are, but just how mentally tough they are. And that’s how hard it is to be a champion. If anyone is easy, it was easy, anybody would be able to do it. But, uh, there’s just a perfect mix down there in Florida. They’ve upgraded the facilities, but they brought in guys that buy in. And if you weren’t part of the program or on the program, you’re shipped out. Look at the big move. Uh, we’re talking about the Edmonton Oilers and can these teams, you know, make the big move to uh um, you know, go out, get over the top. They traded Hubo who put up a 100 points, right? That’s the equivalent of uh, you know, bringing in, you know, on the basketball, bringing in Guay Leonard. So, they’re not afraid to make Yeah, they’re not afraid to make the big moves. uh and it’s paid off dividends. But I’m surprised, you know, that they’re not there’s not one team right now in the Eastern uh conference under 500. I’m surprised with Babroski playing sub 900 hockey, Kachchuck and Barov being injured. I’m surprised that they’re not sitting at the bottom of the league. It’s a miracle. So there there’s something in the water at Florida for sure. Okay, when we come back, we’re going to hear some pregame sound, but I’m just going to put this on. I’m going to condense it now, Ad Living, so bear with me. Prior to tonight’s puck drop, text your name and your score prediction for the Leafs against the Panthers game. So, you’ve got minutes. Text it to 1050 and if you are selected, you will win a pair of tickets to the Montreal game at Scotia Bank Arena against the Leafs on Saturday. Now, that’s an offer. They’ve had a couple of days to practice and coach Bubby on that. Well, it does for sure and some other guys that play quite a bit of minutes and um coming off a back to back and three and four. So, um it was good. I thought we had a good practice yesterday, you know, um the good day before and um I thought, like I said, practice practice was good yesterday. It was a intense and um guys worked. So, be an optional skate this morning and get ready for a big big match tonight. Two points or two points. Yeah. Do they matter just a little bit more within the division? Oh, for sure. You know, I mean, it’s uh it does. No doubt about it. They’re important games. We all know that. How about Chris Tanniff? Is he skating at home? Yeah, he is. Um again, he’s going to have to get looked at here soon, I think, again, and um see where he’s at. And he’s skating, though. Uh feels okay. And you know, I don’t have no real update other than that on him. What was the big takeaway from the playoff series last year? What do you want your group to either remember or have learned from that? Well, I think you know when you look at game six, the patience we played with and um you’re going to you need that against this team. They’re going to you got to beat the pressure, right? And it’s going to be a lot of pressure everywhere and you got to be patient at times and manage the game, manage the puck. And we did that really well in game six. And in game seven, we we got impatient in the second period and it cost us. It really did. That’s what it boils down to. in my opinion, you know, we got to check hard tonight. We got to be on the right side of things tonight and and you’re not always going to have the plays that are there. They’re not going to be there all the time. So, it’s about managing the game, managing the puck, and staying patient. Coach Buru, I mean, made a lot of sense there and and you’d like to see that. I mean, so we go back to Saturdays to to sort of um look at the clue file and and see that Austin Matthews had a pretty good game. If he could keep that going, that’d be nice, wouldn’t it? He did, right? And when that puck went in the net, everyone did the collective nod saying like that’s exactly what we’re talking about, right? And uh for him, yes, uh it’s easy to measure his success in goals and assists, but I think for him it’s when he’s getting more involved, right? Last year, you know, he did play injured, but you noticed him getting in on the forch. You notice him separating pucks. You notice the storylines every two weeks he’s leading the lead in block shots. So those little details where he jumped out of the screen a little bit more and he was much more noticeable uh in that uh game versus the Pittsburgh Penguins. So could it be now? Maybe they’re getting a little bit more chemistry uh with N and Doi and Doi had two assists last game for third star honors as well. So that’s worth noting as well. Uh but I think for Austin Matthews it’s just building on that. You know you have the lethal shot but it’s not going to be there every single game. And I go back to when he scored 69 goals. They weren’t all just pulling the trigger from top from the from the top of the circles. as I remember he was going to the net tap in back door tap in he was going through traffic navigating absorbing contact playing big hockey uh so I think getting back to that 69 I don’t think that’s the bar anymore but again with that release you know 40 should be on his horizon uh but he’s got to have a little bit more variety and it was a great game last night uh with his uh one goal one assist in almost 20 minutes uh the other thing is you know there’s a real process to when your team’s struggling you look at the waiver wire you claim somebody stutcher and he’s a nice ad and then what you can do is is bench people or not dress them and and when you when they come back in the lineup to get a performance like they got out of Joshua and Doi on Saturday that’s important because if you don’t get that performance you got a bigger problem. Yeah, great job by Steter as well too, right? And he stepped in and played 20 almost 24 minutes uh that night uh versus the Pittsburgh Penguins. He did a great job up and down the ice breaking pucks out as well too. But I think bringing him in is just adding to that accountability knowing regardless of your capit and we know the kneelanders and Matthews aren’t going to sit out but you know some of those mid-level guys they’ve been underachieving and it’s not about goals and assists. Uh you know Joshua probably wouldn’t have to have a goal or you know a big game last night with on the score sheet but he was moving his feet. He had a huge hit I believe in the first period on um Matt Dumba. He was getting involved. He was driving the net. He was you know being a big body out there. And what that does is um sort of put pressure on the opposition, get them on their heels, and eventually it opens up to score goals. Uh one more piece of sound pregame uh Lton on the importance of tonight’s matchup. Yeah, it’s uh these divisional games are so important. Doesn’t matter what time of year. Um I think the points are so important. We’re kind of I don’t know in the same spot, I guess, uh throughout. So it’s a it’s going to be a quick game. They play fast. We know their game. They know our game and um we’re going to have to be on our toes right from the right from the puck drop and and uh play a really hard game and uh make it hard on them. So uh yeah, it’s uh it’s going to be fun. Both sides are definitely injuries. Everybody goes through it. How have you guys as a group kind of managed it or you know taken this adversity and used it to your advantage? Yeah, there’s no uh no surprise that we’ve dealt with with a fair share of injuries and um it’s cliche, but uh guys got to step up in certain roles and and uh play bigger roles and um guys are are going to continue to have to do that throughout the year. It’s it’s uh it’s hard to uh to get everyone back at the same time and everything like that. So, it’s uh it’s hard, but uh guys have to have to step up and take a little bit more responsibility and um I think uh some guys have done a a good job of that. In your experience, how much does the hatred from a playoff series spill over into regular season games the next year? Um I would say a little bit for sure. Yeah, I think uh you battle so hard. um in those playoff series. I saw it a little bit uh uh with Philly and in Pittsburgh and and things like that, but uh yeah, it definitely does. I think uh probably not as much as it used to, but uh definitely does for sure. So, it’s uh yeah, we don’t like them. I don’t think they like us and and uh that’s good. Shan seems to kind of like you guys. He was defending you yesterday in the media saying 25 games in, you guys are still a good contending team despite the adversity. And what do you make of that? Uh yeah. Uh I have no really comment on on him. Do you have some troops locked and loaded? You know, you guys like to engage? I’ll uh I’ll wait till uh I’ll wait till something happens. Well said. Uh so divisional matchup. This is important. Stu Detroit has beaten the Leafs twice. Boston has beaten them twice. They split with Buffalo and split with Montreal so far. I mean, they have to win in their own division. uh you know, one of these teams are going to meet or maybe more than one in the playoffs once we get there and and it’s important to be able to play in your own division, right? 100%. Right. And you take a look at sort of the playoff picture right now. They are only four points behind uh the Montreal Canadians who have won three of five as well. But uh the issue with that is there’s, you know, seven, eight teams in between. So, someone’s got to win, someone’s got to lose, and it’s tough to leapfrog, you know, six, seven teams. So anyway you dice it, regardless of the percentages, Toronto has to put together three, four games. They got to climb out of this hole that they sort of dug. So I think for them it’s just playing the best version of their of of their game. Uh but the issue is now it’s going to be now against the Florida. It’s going to be against um you know the Washingtons and you’re going to be playing some of these top end teams. So you know by my calculation there’s probably six, seven points that they probably threw away. So maybe chalk it up to four. That could be the difference between wild card one and two. It could be difference between third and a wild card or potentially, you know, being at top of the division as well, too. So, uh, anyway you dice it, yes, they are behind the eightball, but, you know, if if I’m Toronto, yes, you want to make the playoffs, but do you want to stumble into the playoffs and get there the last minute? You got to scratch and claw and get points in eight of your last 10 games and then, oh yeah, by the way, you’re playing the Tampa Bay Lightning, who um, uh, you know, are conference champions and, you know, they sweep you. So again, I don’t think it’s like the World Series of Poker. It’s not a chip in a chair uh this year for this group. They have to be the best versions of themselves. And when they do that, you saw it. They weren’t even the best version. They just had some depth scoring. They were skating, moving their feet. They will have success. And playoffs as it was at the beginning of the season should not be a question for this group. Yeah. And even at this point, you know, early in the season, a regulation win against the divisional rival is is just huge because it just makes life easier uh when when the wins are harder to come by later in the season. So, uh, you know, they’re sort of negligent in that department so far this season. They hope to get that sorted out. There was a a kind of a, you know, scare. Oel left the game on Saturday. He’s he’s back in tonight. McCabe was battling something. He’s back in. Now, I want to talk to you about Stetcher. I mean, we we sort of just touched on it briefly. This guy is he’s a good puck mover. He’s been around. He knows how to play and I think he’s a nice ad. Yes. And I’m going to start the uh his nickname is plugandplay because this is the guy that uh you know for the last three four years he’s been on one one-year contracts and you know he’s in and out of the lineup. He can sit five games, you can play him 8 minutes, you can play him 10, 15 and he’s going to come in and play the exact same every single game. He’s going to bring energy. Uh he’s going to bring spunk. He’s going to use his feet. He’s always working, always turning. And it’s sort of contagious when you see a guy out there that’s not the biggest just absorbing contact, finding ways to make plays. He’s a true warrior. So, it’s been a great addition, right? And there’s been some other guys that were struggling to go from 13, 14 to 18 minutes. Here’s a guy that was playing what, 12, 14 minutes at Edmonton the last two, year and a half, and you plug him in right away as a right shot, he can give you 24 minutes. So, ideally, you got to keep him probably around 17 to 18 minutes. But the fact that he’s a champion ready to step up, it just shows what type of character and great pickup by Trin and Co. Yeah, excellent pickup waiver claim. I mean, you don’t usually get a guy that quality on the waiverss, but uh but they did and he could stick around for a bit. Um the other guy I want to bring up is is Nick Robertson. I mean, this was the last goal in the game Saturday, but a solo effort. Nice little uh turnover. Creates a turnover and then rifles it at home. That that was a really slick play. Yeah, I think he put Dumba in the press box. I don’t think he’s playing next game, but uh he’s not listing, so we could say that. But uh again, it’s another guy, you know, win lose or draw. He’s moving his feet. He’s creating energy. Uh but again, he has a great stick and that release is deadly. So again, it was a really really good performance by him. Uh and for him, I don’t think he needs to be in a top six role. He just needs to get his 14 15 minutes to show what he can do. Uh and he’s a scoring threat. Whenever that puck is on his stick in and around or below the dots. So uh again, I think for him it’s just building some chemistry with Lton and Laurance. But uh anything that he chips in offensively, I think has been a plus. And uh he’s been having, I would say, a B+ season right now for Toronto. So we we talk about the carryover. I mean a couple of days between games for the Leafs. Uh can they sort of package that good feeling and all the good execution on Saturday night? Does it transmit or transfer over to this game or do they have to start from scratch? Well, it depends. Did they did they bring the speedos or did they bring the the suits or did they bring the golf clubs? Right. So again, it is Florida. It is uh awful weather here on the east coast, but uh again either way they’re going to be playing great because you know they’re they’re rolling off the momentum of uh uh of playing against Pittsburgh or they’re going to be playing guilty because maybe they had a great time there too. So uh usually they you know when they make these trips they have good performances. So I expect them coming out uh you know fairly early. I’m sure one of their keys to success is get on Babski early and often. Eight goals against on 35 shots his last two games. Uh so he’s a little bit fragile right now. So, I’m sure they’re going to come out gang busters. That’s my expectation uh for the first period for this group. So, for the Panthers, this is game three of a six-game home stand. They’ve already lost the first two to Philadelphia and Calgary, and so they’re not going to be in a good mood, are they? No, you lost to Calgary. What’s going on here? But Calgary has been on a bit of a a heater points in their last six of eight, but they’re going to be coming out ready to go. The Leafs and Sunrise, Florida against the Panthers. We’ll set up the opening faceoff for you next. This is Leaf’s game night on TSN 1050, the iHeart Radio app, and the Leafs radio network. Bath Black Friday continues at Bath Depot. Tonight, it’s off to Sunrise where it’s been sunset for the Leafs in the past. The Panthers have had their numbers, you’re well aware, but take a look at the standings. Both are off to regrettable starts. Will the Leafs slay the dragon or will the Panthers handle the Leafs again? Well, let’s find out. Moles and Canadian Leafs hockey starts now. It’s time for Molson Canadian Leafs hockey on TSN 1050 and the Leafs radio network. The Leafs live here. Oh yes, they do. Welcome aboard to all. Jim, Tatty and Anthony Stewart with you. Bones and Ralphie standing by in mere minutes. We’re only here for a couple of minutes here. Quick face off tonight at the bottom of the hour. The lease will go with Matthews between Doy and N. Dvar centering Knander and Cowan. W centering McMahon and Joshua. a lot between Robertson and Lorent on the blue line. Riley Oel McCabe Stcher, Benois back in tonight. Mermis out. So, it’s Benois Meyers and Wall is the starter. What do you make of all that, Stu? It’s a nice really good uh balance, right? Uh they have some speed and they have some trigger guys on all four lines. So, I’m going to be keying in on the third line again with W McMahon and Joshua as I feel like again they’re starting to build some chemistry and regardless of the three goals they scored uh last game, they were getting in on the forche. They were sustaining pressure. very very tough to play against. So that sort of softened up the opposition to let the Matthews line and the Tavvaris lines with Knander and Cowan sort of skate around there too. So again, it’s going to be a hard-fought game because this Florida team is very very tenacious. They stick to the system, they move their feet, but I think the bottom six, if they sort of keep it close, uh the top guys can come in and take over this game. And I’m looking for East Cowan to build uh and have another great game. Two goals in his last three games as well too as he’s settling in as a everyday NHL. So really good balanced lineup. uh D as well. Good to see Benois back as well too and looking for them to have another uh great game as well. I think it’s the first time all year, Stu, where I I read the lineup and as I was reading each line, I could actually have a visual of something they did positively because they all all participated against the Penguins. I mean, it’s like those lines have clear definition now, don’t they? Yeah. And uh you sort of listen to it on the broadcast where sometimes you hear some guy’s name in the third period like, “Oh, yeah, he’s playing tonight.” And again, if you take a fine tooth comb and you have the uh uh the microscope out and you’re looking at, oh, I got to find something wrong here. You don’t you don’t really see it based on last game’s uh uh performance as well too. But I think it was the key saves at the big big moments. Uh if they do that tonight, uh some of these guys are playing some great hockey as well too. William Neland, they were top the league leaders in points. N is playing good. Austin Matthews seems like he’s finding his rhythm. So keep it close. uh play the right way and they have enough natural talent to take over games and get some of those quote unquote easy wins that they had against the Penguins. I I’ll tell you, when he went out of the game Saturday night, it was a big sort of uh oh no with OEL because he’s playing so well, isn’t he? Yeah, really really good. I think he had to get a jump on getting his bathing suit for Florida, but uh that’s neither here nor there. But uh he’s looking to what beat the record tonight with 10 games uh point streak, too. So should be a good game for him as he’s looking to make history uh with the Maple Leafs. All right, Stu, fasten your seat belts. Here we go. So, in the power play, the Leafs are 26th and Florida is T15. On the PK, the Leafs are 15th and and the PK for the Panthers is 24th. The Panthers special teams adds up to 97.8 and the Leafs 96.7. Both want to improve on that. We’ll see what happens. The opening faceoff is next. Also, Canadian Leafs hockey on TSN 1050, the iHeart Radio app, and the Leafs radio network. After a resounding victory in Pittsburgh, the Toronto Maple Leafs have traveled south to Florida to tangle with the twotime Stanley Cup defending champion Florida Panthers. A team that is in the similar situation that the Leafs befell themselves with 25 points at this stage in the season. And the faceoff will be brought to you by Alpine Credits. You own your own home and need a loan? Alpine Credits can help get approved at alpinecredits.ca. Well, you would say after the game Saturday against Pittsburgh, you hope for one thing. It’s the start of a roll. They’re two and two in their six game road trip so far. They’ll finish against Carolina on Thursday night. But you hope this is a building block. The more consistency and a lot more points in the standings because they need it. And the Florida Panthers are in the same boat. Their boat though has a lot of injuries, a lot of injuries, a lot more than the Maple Leafs do, but it is still a situation. Their goalending has been spotty. Babrosky’s not been the same. And they have struggled as well as the Leafs to the left and the Panthers to the right. We’re underway. Shot into the Toronto zone by Mikola. Out of the net is Joseph Wall to scoop it along the boards to the near side. Doi was able to get it out at center and it’s going to be brought back in offside and a faceoff will come in the center ice area. The goalenders Joseph Wall 2 and 0 2.33 in his games against Florida this season. He’s 23 and1 2.80 and a 919 save percentage. Sergey Babski is 107 and0 2.88 88 and an 882 save percentage thus far this season. Cleared down into the Florida zone. Panthers get back to the puck and Jones banks it off the boards to center. Settle down there by the Maple Leafs. Played over to McCabe. Doy couldn’t get it into the zone. Neither could Ny. They pin it up against the boards. And as the puck comes free, both teams will change as the Leafs get it and shoot it in from center. I stand corrected from the other side of center and it’s going to be an icing call. Pretty tight call there by the linesman. Usually if you get it within a foot of the line they’ll give it to you but the leads are going to be forced to take a face off back in their own zone. We’ll go through some of the Florida injuries. Matthew Kachchuck, Alexander Barkov, Dmitri Kulikov, Yona Gajc, Thomas Dosk, B2 Lucan, and Carter Vhaggy was a late surprise scratch for the Panthers before this game. Another icing here. We’ll come back into the Toronto zone. By the way, you’ll notice Willie Knander is letting the beard grow, but he has no plans on shaving it. Don’t know if he’s going to get to Joe Thornton status. Oo, wouldn’t that be something? It would slow him down though, you’d think. Well, absolutely. No question it would slow you down. Played off the boards by Knander to center off a faceoff win by the Leafs. Knander gets it free. He looks for an opening. Goes to the defense and Riley starting down the right wing boards is going to shoot it into Florida territory. Knander got there to poke it along into the corner. Awa couldn’t help out and out come the Panthers. Three a breast at center ice to the line and in. A close play at the blue line on the off side as it comes back to the point. Long shot by Forsling. Went wide down into the corner trying to come out in front of the net. Volskinn was blocked and it is going to be cleared high to center ice forcing Jeff Petri. Back into his own zone up on the left wing again. Falinskus with a shot that has caramemed off a stick and gone up into the screen and out of play. Well, the Florida Panthers has been a struggle especially at home. They’ve lost three straight games at home. Three out of four overall. The only win coming in Nashville, an 8-3 win against the Predators. They’ve had some losses home to Edmonton, Philadelphia, and Calgary in this last little stretch. Going to face off against someone else as Greor was waved out. And so Bokeis moves in and Roa wins the faceoff and it’s airma mailed high to center ice and out back to retrieve it as Jeff Petri circles around back of his goal. Played it up on the right wing. Boquist got to center dropped it off and it is shot into the Toronto zone. Boquist into the forche on the far side. Kunan got it into the slot. A shot pad save a rebound and up against the goal line and knocked out from behind wall. Will going to have to have a look at that? Played up on the wing and shoveled high to center ice. Referee was right there to wave it off and a shot from a sharp angle at the other end by Bobby McMahon. Goes wide of the net. Wall made the first save and then was out of position, but he had help in behind him. And we haven’t heard a buzzer go, so I’m sure they’ve looked at it. And we’ll get another look at it when we get an opportunity here. Rodriguez back in his own zone. Pass to the line. Cut off. Oliver Ecman Larson in with a pass and that deflected wide. Oel with a nineame point streak going here for Toronto. Backhanded high and knocked down by Riley to Oel and he gets to center and shoots it in. Panthers back after it into the corner. Round back of the net. Nice centered but no one home. Matthews was off on the left wing instead of being in front of the net. Leafs with a quick up on the right side. Matthews can’t get it into the zone. Two well covered by Mikola. Now the puck at center ice and Matthews trying to get it ahead to Doy but he had it too well covered and Seth Jones plays it down into the Leaf end out of the net wall as the icing was not going to be called. Played along the boards. The Leafs trying to get it through. Matthews too well covered. Chied up there by Mikola. Now Doy is able to get the puck free and N skates to center and Gingerly rolls it in over the line. No icing. Reinhardt back to recover the puck. Played it up on the boards. Matthews can’t get to it and it’ll be cleared to the leaf blue line. Dragged in over the line but controlled now by Toronto. And Meyers gets it back out at center ice. No score in the hockey game. Nicely underway. Four minutes play. Meyers around back of the Toronto net up on the wing for Tavvaris. Backhanded to the line but cut off. AJ Greer with a pass in front and that was deflected wide of the goal. Tamascavic gets it back into the corner. Knocked away by Tavvaris. Taken to safety by Meyers. Fed around the boards and tipped out at center ice by the Maple Leaf defense. Ecklad going back plays it up on the wing and out come the Panthers again working to the line and in on the left wing. Thomas Cavage played it around back of the net. Riley playing it up on the boards. The Leafs can’t get it freed up for Knander. Poked to the line but not out. Now the Panthers down low and a good back check then stolen and a shot stopped by Wall off the stick of Samoskeg. Looked like the Leafs were home and out and maybe off to an oddman rush when the puck got turned over there in the slot. Florida has the first three shots on goal in the hockey game. We still haven’t seen that play from behind the net. Thank you very much. Shot into the Florida bench and maybe the folks here will at least show us what went on behind Joseph Wall. Know if Wall got a piece of the second opportunity. Yeah, he did. He was able to stretch that right leg and his blocker arm out to get a piece of it. Popped up off him. Got right to the goal line. And it was Jake McCabe. He missed the first attempt but was able to sweep it off the goal line in the second try and keep this game scoreless. Lots of room. It was only maybe an inch away from the goal line. Played to center ice. Leafs will dump it back into Florida territory. Following up on the rush is McMahon. McMahon goes into the corner near side back to the point. Stetcher with a wrist shot scores. Deflection in front of the goal maybe. But Troy Stetcher may have his first goal as a Maple Leaf. I think it went in off a Florida player and the Leafs on their first shot on goal have a one to nothing lead. Little signs that things might be turning for the Leafs. Goal line stand and the clear by Jake McCabe at one end. And now just like the Pittsburgh game, point shots are starting to get through. I thought Nick Wah might have tipped that. He took a whack at it in front of the net. Was about waist high. But I think this just beats Sergey Babski blocker side. Brrist shot from the middle of the ice and Stcher is open the scoring for Toronto. So it is a one- nothing Toronto lead. But that line was great in Pittsburgh. Troy Stetcher with his 23rd career goal. His first as a Maple Leaf in his 573rd NHL game. Played by Babroski to the line and out. Panthers trying to get to it and it’ll be brought back to regroup in the Florida zone. Pass goes astray. No icing though. Must have touched somebody. Wall plays into the corner that draws a crowd. Robertson trying to dig it away from Luke Kunan and he does. But then he gives the puck away and then it’s blocked by Meyers. And then Robertson on second effort is able to chop it out into center ice. Now he’ll control it at his own blue line. Playing it back and then the Leafs are in the midst of a change. Royce Detter getting the first goal of the game and the Maple Leafs have a one to nothing lead. Lifted high into Florida territory round back of the net. Lundell getting it up on the wing. Cut off by the Leaf’s captain and back to the point for Oliver Eman Larson. A shot Pato and a swinging move there by NY. Failed to make contact, but he was right in the slot when the rebound came right out to him. Long shot directed into the corner by Wall at the other end. Back to the point once more. For Borsling with a shot in traffic, stopped by Wall. Comes around to the near side. Borsling keeping it alive for Florida. Marianne having an outstanding start to his season. Lost the puck up on the wing for Doi. Doi gets it back to Matthews. Matthews looks for a man to pass it to and springs it ahead and N makes a couple of nifty moves, gains the zone, looks to play for someone, but the Leafs were in the midst of a change. Down into the corner it goes. Tavaris couldn’t come up with it. Out come the Panthers to center ice. To the line and in. Unable to get a shot away and then it deflected wide of the net as Sam Bennett let it go and off his stick. It’s come all the way back down into Florida territory. Leafs leading one to nothing. And as was the case the other night as a shot is swallowed up by Wall and held for a faceoff. They have been stingy with the shots on goal, but their shooting percentage is unbelievable. Why waste them? Now that’s a good point. Why would you do that? Boy, that line like we mentioned was great in Pittsburgh Saturday night and open the scoring for the Leafs in Florida to Tuesday. Yeah, it has been the lesser lights scoring here as the Leafs get it back in front and they score. Add Dakota Joshua to the list again. A turnover in the Florida zone. The Leafs have had two shots. It’s two nothing. And boy, this was a skill goal. A little give and go coming off the left wing. Dakota Joshua goes to the front of the net. It all starts with Nick Wu in a faceoff win. Leafs then loit to the middle of the ice and the Leafs are able to track it down first. Bobby McMahon in the left wing circle. What a great picks it up. But then the the great move by Dakota Joshua goes forehand or backhand forehand reverses it on Babski and snaps it up over the right pad. So this line has scored twice. Dakota Joshua getting his fourth goal of the season. And Luke Kunan trying to entice Nick Robertson with a scrap. Joshua’s third goal in two games. our two second goal in two games back to back. He’s gone 14 games without. Actually, the last time first two goals he scored were back to back against Buffalo. Shot down into the Florida zone again. Oh, now they’ve corrected me. There have been three Toronto shots. There’s a fourth and Babski takes that and holds on for a faceoff in the Florida end. But when you look at that line, Nick Wah, Dakota Joshua, and Bobby McMahon, they’ve been 15 to 20 goal guys in their career and you’re hoping I can all get to that level again getting 40 to 50 goals from your third line or fourth line. But they all have size. They all have size. They can skate. They should be able to create chances off the four check. Well, and like I said, they’ve they’ve scored goals. Yes. And they can finish and we’ve seen that. Mikola gets the puck out at center ice for Florida to the line and in now with Landelle. Shot directed wide by Wall. Puck into the corner and around back of the net. Leafs get it ahead. Doi trying to control it. Leaves it there for N. N breaking along with Oliver Eman Larson who then pulls up when N shoots the puck in over the line. But the Panthers counterattack quickly back across the line to the right wing side into the slot area. Reinhardt got a shot away. It was blocked. The rebound comes back to the point. A shot. That is blocked but still maintained by Florida. And Wall coming across is able to make the save off of Marian’s quick shot from the far circle. Got to be really careful with this Florida line on the ice. That is their number one line with Maron and Reinhardt on it. And what happened is they turned the puck over deep in the Florida zone, but all three forwards got caught deep and that led to the oddman rush back the other way. Faceoff in the Toronto zone. The Leafs leading two to nothing. 114 to play in the period. Penois launching it high through center ice and it bounces the length of the rink and an icing fall coming here against Toronto. They’re saying one of the impressive things with that win against Pittsburgh on Saturday night. John Tavvaris did not have a point. Willie Nelander only had an assist. So it was in fact it was a game where all four lines contributed to the offense once Nick Robertson scored unassisted late in the third period. Draw to the right of wall and the Leafs control the faceoff. Meyers gets it out at center off Tavvaris. Knander hustling after it into the near corner. Plays it back along the boards looking for help from Tavaris. That wasn’t forthcoming. And now the Panthers will get it out on the wing and Sam Bennett gets to the line and in played around the boards to the far side. Benwis lets the puck go. Knander tips it but it doesn’t clear. Back at the point, Forsling dropping it off for a long shot from Bennett that was knocked away. Cowan round back of the net and as it comes to the side of the goal, it is pushed into the goal crease area and covered up by Wall and AJ Greer gave a pretty good cross check to Willie Knander right at the side of the net. One Lisa got to be careful with they have not fared well in scrum, right? Where was it? Washington or Columbus? They were two for two getting thrown in the box and scrums in front of their own net. Well, the Florida Panthers have had 25 more power play opportunities than the Toronto Maple Leafs have had this season. They’re very They’re very good at what they do, aren’t they? Yes, they are. A long shot glove by Wall will stop play again. 1020 to play in the first period. Joseph Wall’s last game in that building was perfect with a two nothing win in game six. of the second round. We probably don’t have to go into details of what happened after that. Thank you. A lot of other people thank you as well. Played to the blue line. Joshua plays it off a skate and it’s going to bounce into the Toronto bench and go out of play and a faceoff will come in the neutral zone. Dam Bennett won the Khan Smite trophy. And if you talk to Anthony Stolars, you might suggest that he also won one of an Emmy and or Oscar for his performance of taking someone out with an accidental elbow. Shot down the ice again. No icing this time. Babroski playing it into the corner and Evan Rodriguez gets it along the boards and the Panthers just lift it out at center ice and they’re calling it a high stick. So they will whistle it down and there’ll be a faceoff coming in the neutral zone. Joe Bowen along with Jim Ralph, Jim Tatty and Anthony Stewart, Alex Mandarino running the operation. So raise a glass or cup or whatever you pour your Molson in because it doesn’t matter what it’s in. It matters where it’s from. Canadian export Ultra Excel Molson. Everyone in. Must be legal drinking age. We were reminiscing a little bit about the Nova Scotia Voyagers, the team that I broadcast for prior to coming here in 1982. And back in the mid70s, it was thought that the Nova Scotia Vorurs were the second best professional hockey team in North America and probably were. Montreal won back-to back Stanley Cups and the Voyagers won backto back trophies. And we asked When’s the last time that happened? And Kerwin came up with it. Yes, he did. The 95 New Jersey Devils and the Albany Devils. And a long shot blocked there and a rebound in front of the net. Rolls in on goal. Still scrambling. Puck still free. It’s laying there and it’s knocked wide of the net. Nice was blowed over. Now Babski trying to pick up his stick as the puck goes back of the goal. Leafs trying to get it freed up and do. Matthews tried to get it out in front, but it rolled off his stick. And now here the Panthers coming through center with a pass that’s going off his stick and up into the crowd and out of play. Well, the Leafs are winning some battles in the offensive zone, aren’t they? As the Matthews line very nearly. And again, this just starts on a wrist shot from the point and traffic in front. Knives got bowled over which took Babski out. Yeah. And the puck remained loose. Lendell should have got a holding penalty there. Got away with it. And a hook, too. So, face off coming in the Toronto end. The goals are eerily similar. Stcher from McMahon and Joshua. Joshua from McMahon and Stcher. Played around the boards. Trapped at the far point by Florida. set around back of the net trying to come up on the wing. McMahon took a hit along the boards there from Rodriguez. Now the Panthers coming out of the corner with it. Cycling the puck. Well, trying to get free along the boards is Jack Divine. The puck comes free. The Leafs don’t get it out. It’s still free. If they blue line, kept it on the left wing. Down into the corner is Jeff Petri. Round back of the net. It goes for Divine. Divine is tied up on the boards. The puck came out in front of the net. Stopped there by Wall. And the Leafs are going to break it out at center ice. Rua sends it in over the line, but not deep enough. And then it ends up going into the bench at the Florida door. And a faceoff will come probably in the neutral zone as a result. At least get caught in their own zone by the fourth line of the Panthers. And again, what’s hurt them is trying to make a play to get the puck out of the zone there. They’ve got it about 15 ft inside the blue line and instead of just getting it out, it’s it’s a little little chip up trying to spring the forward rather than just getting it out. Play turned over in the floor to end. Panthers get it out at center. Greer sends it in over the line in behind his man was Sam Bennett, but reach around with Stetcher to knock it away. Leafs break through center ice. Jake McCabe in on the left wing trying to get it back in front of the net to Cowan. It comes to Tavvaris. Back to the point. He’ll send it back to Tavvaris. Tvarus works to the blue line in now for Knander. Doesn’t shoot it left for Cowan. Cowan to the point on the left side. McMahon with a shot or McCabe rather with a shot that is swallowed up by Babroski and he will hold for a faceoff in the Florida zone with 755 to play in period number one. And the Leafs leading two to nothing. That’s on goal now. A little closer. It’s seven to six. Dontovirus looking for the redirection. Yeah, he didn’t get his stick on it. He was in pretty good position though and providing a screen as well. Draw one by Toronto. Long shot blockered away there by Babski. Couple of leads taken down on the play. Lton couldn’t get to it. It’s cleared by Florida high down into the Toronto end. Morgan Riley skates back and got it ahead and Robertson sends it to the near boards and a long lead pass is going to be out of the reach of the intended receiver Scotty Lton and that will turn into an icing and bring it back into the Toronto zone. Leaf’s next action usually it’s Florida Tampa. This time it is Florida Carolina and that will be on Thursday night. Another 7:30 start for the Maple Leafs. I’m going to give you, you know, we talked about was the Albany River Rat, the New Jersey Devils. They weren’t. No, they were Udica Devils before, but River. Okay. I’ll give you one similar where you didn’t want to be in the farm team. All right. NHL, like you said, I mean, that’s difficult to get called up when the Canadians are a powerhouse the NHL. My third year, I played in Baltimore, which was Pittsburgh’s farm team. I was on loan. Okay. Okay. In Baltimore, first place in the American Hockey League. In Pittsburgh, last place. Oh. In the NHL. And nobody got called up because Ariel Lemieux was the number one pick the next year. And they couldn’t take the chance that one of you guys would screw up the draft pick. played down into the Florida or into the Toronto zone by the Panthers. Swept around to the far side, pinching down there is Reinhardt, but the Leafs are able to get it out and Robertson flips it down into Florida territory. Floren couldn’t come away with it. Panthers get it back out at center, turn it back to the blue line. Leafs come away with it and Doy regroups back to his own blue line. And a quick pass ahead for N. He’ll backhand into Florida territory. Jones riddled to the boards there on a good hit by Doli. Feting pass comes in front and unable to get a shot away was nice. N into the corner. Pass comes ahead and here’s Bennett coming out at center ice. Holland Landing native gets it in across the Toronto line. Stood up nicely there at the defense. Leafs get it to the blue line but don’t get it out. Pass back in front of the net. Bennett couldn’t handle it. Back along the boards. The Leafs trying to move it out at center. It’s a bouncing puck that NY leaves and now it’ll be played by Stetcher to center ice. Cowan gave the puck away on a pass. Forsling sends a long shoot in on wall. He is going to wait for one of the Panthers to get close and then cover it up to stop play with 605 left to play in period number one. And the Maple Leafs with a 37 and0 record on the road trying to improve on that and have a two nothing lead over the Florida Panthers. And with Florida’s six leading scorers, Joe coming into this game, Brad Marshan, Sam Reinhardt, Anton Lundell, Carter Verhagy, Evan Rodriguez, and Seth Jones. Only one of them. Landelle was the Florida draft pick. Everyone else acquired in trade. Now, isn’t Marshand on a 50goal pace? Yeah. And the highest he’s ever had is 39. He’s also said the lease might be going to the power play here as Dakota Joshua got taken down right between the benches. So, we’ll wait and see here. Think you’re right. Puck comes in front of the net and N took a whack at it and Babroski had to make a save. Back to the point. kept in at the blue line by Ma Matthews who loses the puck but then regains it. Back to Cowan. Cowan had a chance to shoot it and probably should have but didn’t. Cowan now on the near half boards looking in front of the net still with it as he goes back of the goal. Dishes it back to Knander. Knander in front for Cowan. Back to the point to Matthews to Knander. Someone shoot the puck and when it is Matthews set a weak wrist shot off a leg kept in by Willie. Now to Tavvaris. Tavvarus in the high slot to Matthews on the right wing side down low. N couldn’t get a shot away. N along the boards to Matthews losing it and it is shot down the ice by Florida. I will go to a coach’s convention to try to figure out this power play and I’m not sure I’m going to be able to. Shot then by Doi is juggled but held by Babroski. I’m I mean I’m with you having Austin Matthews the furthest player from the net. Only thing I can think of is that the injuries that he’s had p prohibit him from being able to do that because it makes no sense to me that one of the best shooters in the National Hockey League shouldn’t be the focal point on that right side and let him blast away. Point shot is gloved by Babroski and another faceoff coming in the Florida zone with 47 seconds left to go in the power play. You know already mentioned that the Leafs not been great in the power play two for 17 in the last eight and the last power play goal which was Saturday. That was the second unit which is out now. Nick Wah had the power play marker. Nine shots a piece. 443 left first period. Two nothing Toronto and AA is waved out and Doy will take the face off and the draw scrum. It rolls to the side of the goal played into the corner but not out. Riley is able to move up and keep the puck in. Bobby McMahon swinging it around to the opposite side to Doy. He shields it well but has developed a traffic jam there as it comes back to the near side to McMahon. McMahon coming out of the corner. McMahon goes around back of the net. And I’ve played it off to the boards. Back to the point it comes. Near side for Oliver Aman Larson. Larson’s pass just kept in. Fed over on the far side for Doy. He can’t get to it. Played up on the wing and knocked out at center ice by Florida with a dozen seconds left to go in the power play. Oel gets it ahead. That deflects down in on goal. Babroski played it away and the penalty will expire as the Leafs do not add to a two nothing lead. Played on the backand down into Florida territory. Knander in pursuit. Puck comes around on the boards. Pinching down was Jake McCabe. Kept in at the blue line by his defense partner. Down into the near corner then for Forsling. Forsling knocks Matthews down. The puck is still free as it comes back. Stetcher can’t get to it and an alleyoop pass through center is finally settled and brought in over the line by the Panthers. They’ll play it into the corner and around back of the net. Centering pass effort by Samoske was blocked and the Maple Leafs McCabe trying to play it ahead. Finds Knander. He just does get it out, but it was blocked there and shot right back into the Toronto end. McCabe will try it again. this time to his defense partner Troy Detcher who’s got a pair of assists for a goal and an assist in this game. Gets to center and now shoots it in. 253 left to go in the period. Puck in the Florida zone and a shot whistles well wide of the goal. Carum’s back to Oel with a wrist shot that was high and wide. Robertson couldn’t get it, but he backs up a pinch that keeps the puck alive for Scott Lton. Around on the near boards to the near side, and the Panthers finally get clear of it, and Balance gets it down into the Toronto zone. Far side for Reinhardt. Reinhardt dropping it back. Pass intercepted. Leafs having difficulty getting out, but Riley chips the puck to center and forces the Panthers back in their own zone. Balinskus starting out on the wing. Oh, almost a turnover there, but the Leafs didn’t get the handle on the puck and then a long shoot in is gloved and knocked down by Wallowing Benois to skate up the right wing boards. Takes a hit but gets the puck to center and then the Panthers send it right back in again and Meyers will backhand it along the boards. And now Ruis does a nice job of protecting it and carries the puck to center. Got it to his winger and it is flipped into the right wing corner. Rodriguez for Florida along the boards. Good hit there by Joshua and it is cleared down the ice by Florida off a stick. So no icing. Minute 37 to go in the first. Leafs with a two nothing lead and it’s been the lesser lights on the board again here tonight. McCabe a lead pass that went astray and icing is going to be charged against Toronto as it’ll come back into the floor and a lot of empty seats it looks like. from our television shot here. Way for Troy Ster. Joe, his last goal as a member of the Edmonton Oilers was December 31st of last year, 2024. In a game against Utah, he’d gone 45 without. Well, we were talking a lot about how opposing defense put up points against the Leaf. Forsling sends the puck into the goal crease. Wall outfights Greer for it. and Samoscavich was there as well as Forsling sent the puck into the goal crease. Stetcher doing a good job of boxing out and Wall was able to get a glove on it. Lost the handle on his goal stick but covered up. Draw one by Florida. Samoscavage dropping it into the corner. Trying to come out in front. Forsling goes to the far corner with it. Works back towards the blue line. Sends it towards the front of the net. That was blocked. Knocked into the corner, but Aaron Ecklad was there. Panthers after it again along the boards. Leafs trying to come away with it. Matthews does and he flips it into neutral ice with less than a minute to play in the period. Eklad getting it back on the near side and it is played back by his defense partner Forsling and it’s shot down into the Toronto end. Morgan Riley pounding it around the boards. One of the Panthers went cartwheeling into the end boards. Not sure if he’s all right. We as Riley brings it into the Leaf zone. Oddman Chance here, but it’s turned over and coming out from being knocked down was Samusc. Then he gave the puck away. Back into the leaf zone. It does come now. Jones getting it back to the point. Long shot knocked away into the corner. 17 seconds to go in the period. Marian sends it to the net. That’s blockered away. Back to the goal now for Londell. Landell along the boards. Riley got it up for Doy. Doi just wants to get it out. He does. It’s rolling on edge. And with 1.3 seconds left in the period, there’ll be a faceoff in the Toronto zone. Smart play by Max Doi as well. Don’t try to be cute. You know, time’s running down in the period. Just get it out as hard as you can. We’re looking again at Aki Samoscavic was drilled in behind the leaf net. Actually had Oliver Eman Larson’s stick tied up in his midsection. And I don’t know whether he was trying to draw the penalty on the play, but ended up by the time he came out of the zone, the puck was there and Florida came back in on a rush. A draw one by Matthews. And there’s the horn. A successful opening 20 minutes for the Maple Leafs. And one line does all of the scoring. Stcher from McMahon and Joshua. Then Joshua from McMahon and Stetcher. And the Maple Leafs have a two nothing lead to enjoy in the dressing room after 20 minutes of play. Leaf certainly in a hole when it comes to the standings and have to string a bunch of goals together, a bunch of wins together, Joe, to get back into the mix. But I think when you look at what happened in the offseason, you look at the Florida Panthers, nobody’s saying the Florida Panthers are the fastest team in the National Hockey League. That’s not why they’ve won back-to-back Stanley Cups. They talk about a team that’s plays heavy and wins one-on-one battles. And the best part of what we’ve seen in the last couple of games is that line of Juan McMahon and Dakota Joshua. Big bodies now putting points up on the board because they’re winning one-on-one battles in the offensive zone. So to me, this is, in my opinion, this is what Brad Tolivian wanted when he went out and made those moves in the off season. Uh let’s hope it’s a better late than never that these guys have found this chemistry. Jim Tatty and Anthony Stewart to dissect the first 20 minutes of a two nothing Toronto lead. We’ll be back with the second period. You’re listening to Molten Leaf Hockey on TSN 1050 in the Maple Leafs radio network. But Troy Stetcher may have his first goal as a Maple Leaf. I think it went in off a Florida player. And the Leafs on their first shot on goal have a one to nothing lead. Sterill credited with the goal. We apologize for any technical difficulties at the start of that play, but Ster gets the goal. Looked like Wad tipped it, but maybe not. So far, it’s Steter’s goal. I think I said that 15 times. Anyway, after 20 minutes is brought to you by Subaru. Legendary winters await. Hurry into your local Subaru dealer today. Stu, I think it’s Ster’s goal. Yes, it was. It was his goal. And uh you look at the replay there and uh they maybe talked about just sort of the face that Wad gave. Maybe he tipped it as well, too. But you know what a story has been right now. how he’s leading the team uh sorry second and uh time on ice today playing 7 uh 720 uh five through the first period but just again just the compete uh going to the net doing everything that sort of Craig Buru was questioning with this group all heart so yes the points are great four points in seven games but for me it’s going in the corner winning battles getting pucks in deep putting pucks on net just those little details oriented in his game and when you see a guy out there that’s you know threequarters the size of everybody else on the ice ice it motivates the rest of the group So great start for his Maple Leaf career for Troy Ster. Well, at the end of the period, Ralphie and Bonesy were talking about that third line, Wah McMahon and Joshua doing exactly what the general manager wanted them to do. It took a little while for this to I guess develop some chemistry, but it’s there now, isn’t it? Yeah. And it’s it’s a little bit frustrating, right? Because it’s not like they’re coming in and globe trotting it up, right? They’re they’re going straight line hockey. You saw Joshua on his goal. It was a set faceoff play there, airing it out into the middle. And when you’re that big and you’re that fast, you literally you physically see the other team go back uh on their heels because there’s just so much momentum and speed and uh and and again they turn the puck over and they’re getting to the net even on Stetcher’s goal. Great job by McMahon driving down low, turning up, getting to the net and W as well. So when you’re big, you’re fast and you’re strong. You know, those are some compliments and uh some traits that make you really, you know, close to unstoppable in the NHL. So putting them together, great job. Uh but it’s not them reinventing the wheel. just straight line hockey almost d uh dumbing down their game. Uh and it’s very very effective right now. What’s that? Five goals now in four periods. It’s it’s been great. Uh there’s someone looking like a genius within the organization whoever said put those three together. Well, I mean you know so now they have the job description and and they’re doing it and and you know I think they might have listened to the pregame show because Stetcher as you said looks really good. I mean this guy knows how to move the puck. Um he he’s just got a real good sense and I think he’s a really good fit on this team. Great. Yes. and uh and and sort of that was sort of the the compliment for him, you know, coming over from Edmonton and he got games in the playoffs and he went and took somebody’s job and he’s a guy that comes in uh whether it’s 10 minutes, 12, 14, he comes in and plays the exact same way. He’s done that for 650 games uh in his career as sort of an underdog coming in and uh what it does, it just adds a little bit more of a level of accountability for this Maple Leafs group. So, um again, again, I don’t know whose idea it was, but it’s paying off early early dividends. But what it does now, it puts other guys on notice, right? But I think the key is you’re seeing the success he’s having. I know it’s very, very early seven games, but Oel, when you’re around that championship pedigree or you’re around those guys like the McDavids and the dry citles, it’s it’s contagious. It adds a little bit of a swagger to your game and as hardworking as he is, he just has confidence, right? He has the confidence of a guy that, you know, maybe has a, you know, 300 points in his career as a defensive, but he is just a hardworking meat and potato uh type of guy. and it’s it’s rubbing off on this group and it’s it’s through it’s very small sample size but you know he’s looking like he’s a hidden gem for this Maple Leafs team. It’s going to be interesting if Ster keeps playing like that to see what what the residual effect is on the other players and the same for that third line as as the rest of the team looks at how these guys are playing. Maybe the fourth line uh would develop something that way as well. Um one thing I did notice after the Leaf went up two nothing, the Panthers shifted into a real gritty gear, didn’t they? Yeah, they’re mean and they’re nasty, right? It’s like uh you know there was a a little bit of a Babrosski stops the puck and someone’s just skating by and you see Mika just pop the guy for no reason. So it’s an unnecessary nastiness. But again that is the style of hockey that uh Paul Maurice has them playing, right? Going to the net hard, going in the corners, finishing their checks, right? You heard the quote of him uh during the playoffs. You hit them and take the body till they have nothing left in game seven. So that’s the mentality that they have. Uh you see Samic all over the ice as well too. He’s getting involved. So, just that they try to take the will away from their opponent, but they’re a little bit short-handed. They have some injuries. They have some younger uh guys in the lineup that are getting acclimated to this group, too. So, again, they’re not a full strength, but uh that’s no excuse. They they have full intentions of winning every game as well. And yet, another example of good leaf goending. Yes. And Wall has been uh again, maybe he has a little bit of competition with Hill to be, but again, we know it’s his crease for the time being. But uh he’s great. It was one- nothing. He made a couple big saves and I think it was early on in the game where we thought the puck may have gone into the net, but great job by McCabe fishing it out of the net there too. But Wall again, he’s dialed in making the saves. No unnecessary movement, but most of all, he looks confident in his game and uh again that is the key for success for this group. Great goalending and they’ve gotten that for the first 20 minutes. Just one power play for the Leafs in that period and uh well, it wasn’t that effective, was it? Next question. But uh yeah, it it is what it is, right? a fiveman power play unit, but uh maybe a little bit of accountability with the second unit, but I think for them they got to have the shooting mentality. I don’t like uh Matthews at the top. Again, they know unless he has a wide open look, he’s probably not going to, you know, shoot it. And those opportunities are few and far between. So, it’s just taking away that element. I think you need to put him on the flank or behind the net, but you need to have more of a shooting mentality and puck retrieval mentality as well. Stu, thanks very much. Two nothing for the Leafs over the Florida Panthers after 20 minutes of play. This is Molo Canadian Leafs hockey on TSN 1050. the iHeart Radio app and the Leafs radio network. Two nothing Toronto lead after 20 minutes of play. 11 shots a piece in the first 20 minutes. Stcher from McMahon and Joshua. Joshua from McMahon and Stcher. And the Maple Leafs have that two nothing advantage built on some of the underlings performing again the way they did in the game in Pittsburgh. And nothing pretty. No. Right now that’s you and I have talked about it a little bit during the intermission that it’s amazing how a little bit of luck can give you all kinds of confidence in this right hand. Yeah. And but but it starts Jake McCabe takes one off the goal line. A scoreless game. Then what happens? It’s a wrist shot from Troy Stcher. Goes through a screen, finds the back of the net. Then Stchcher dumps the puck out from his own end. Bobby McMahon wins the race, puts it to Dakota Joshua. So, it’s uh it’s not the pretty plays. Maybe you’d like to see a pretty play in the power play. You know that what u had they had some kind of success, they’d have been up three nothing after the first. But it’s amazing how now you can get into that mode where hey guys we we don’t have to make these unbelievable plays to score goals. Let’s just win those battles. And it’s all the cliches. Get get pucks through, get traffic in front, but you’ve got especially that line of Rouad Joshua and Bobby McMahon. You have a lot of size and a little bit of finish. And it’s great to see it’s only four periods now, but that confidence go right to their hands. Face off at center ice. Puck is dropped. Leafs to the right. Panthers to the left. Fired down into the Florida zone. and puck around the boards into the far corner. Mikola on his backand got it up on the wing. Chopped at by Reinhardt but not cleared. And then it is launched high and bouncing down into the leaf end but not enough for icing. Wall will scoop it back into the corner. Ster punts it up on the wing and it is to the line and not out. Kept in. And now Doi has to work into the corner after it. Got it ahead for Matthews. This time he does get it out and he finds Knives. Nice cutting in on goal. Little move and was taken down on the play by Seth Jones but no call. Great move by Ny now. Knander chasing after Jones. Puck comes free. Knander back to Cowan. Centering pass for Tvaris. Shot went off a stick and went wide. Did you not think that was a penalty? I thought they had a pretty good hold on him to take him down for sure. played out at center ice. Oliver Akman Lararsson, the former Panther, got it up on the wing for Cowan. Cowan’s rash wide by about a foot. Caram’s all the way back out at center ice. Oel will shoot it right back in again. Babski couldn’t slow it up. Wis gets it deeper into the corner. McMahon unable to get to it in time to provide pressure. And now Samoske comes to center and shoots it in for Florida. around on the far boards. Cut off there by Meyers. Back of the net it goes. Dakota Joshua playing it ahead. McMahon got it freed up. Joshua got it to center ice. Got taken off the puck. AJ Greer comes back the other way and shot it well wide of the goal. Puck along the near boards and into the corner. Benois back of the net for Meyers and the Maple Leafs will get it up on the wing, but they don’t get it out into the slot. What a wrist shot taken there by I guess that was uh Studika, but that was blockered away nicely by Wall. I thought for a minute it was Marian, but it was Jack Studika, the Windsor native playing his first game for the Panthers this year. Played down into the Toronto and it b came off a broken stick and came out in front of the towards the front of the net with wall in behind it, but he managed to get back and now the Leafs are out at center ice. Cross the line for Loren. Loren scooping the puck down in around back of the net. Robertson provides some forjacking pressure. Loren clears it around the boards to the far side. Pinching down and keeping it in. Loren into the far corner now trying to get it back for Robertson. It comes back to the point. Just kept in there at the defense. Then around back of the net. Jones for Florida. Got it up on the wing and gets it out at center and down into the Toronto zone. Scotty Lton takes a hit but makes the play to get it back at the net. Jake McCabe up along the boards for Robertson. Sent back in. That broken stick is really playing havoc down in the leaf end. Been kicked around and hit with pucks and everything else. Played to center. The Leafs trying to get it in over the line but are cautious there because they were in the midst of a change and may have had too many men on the ice if someone touched the puck. Now Matthews in on the right side with a wrist shot. Pad save made by Babski. Matthews with it again trying to get NY the puck. Oliver Ecman Larson sends it back into the corner. Tommy had it knocked off his stick able to slow things up at center. Maran gets in across the line but Oel took the puck away from him. Long lead pass has gone astray and an icing call will come here against Toronto. Two to nothing Leafs. 1613 to play in the second period. You like the way the Leafs have come out in this period, right? Again, off the floor check. Matthew N did have an opportunity. Boy, it was a pretty good hook by Seth Jones taking Matthew N down, but N tried to make a little move where he actually pulled up, put the brakes on at the top of the crease. Tried to get Babrosski to overplay it, didn’t he? A shot by Bennett goes over top of the leaf goal. Doy chopping at it and it goes off a stick and into the Florida bench. Face off coming in the Toronto end. Did you hear about Jeff O’Neal today saying he hasn’t read a book since grade five? I I I don’t have the heart to tell him I’ve been reading the Shelby Foot trilogy of the Civil War. There’s 3,000 pages of the three books. That’s what you’re reading? Yeah, I’m reading that. It’s light. It’s a light-hearted kind of a drama. Well, those two things you said, only one of them surprises me. I’m not going to ask which one. I’m not asking which one. Played off the glass and outed down the ice. And an icing call despite the efforts of Bobby McMahon will come here against Toronto. Yeah, I I believe the OD dog hasn’t read a book since. How did he It’s the old saying, how did he ever get out of grade four? The answer is probably he used to lend the teacher his car, right? I remember seeing Eddie Shack’s academic record in public school and it just read did not attend. Did not attend. Did not attend. Did not attend. Puck in front of the goal and a shot. Whistles off a leg and wide in the Florida zone. Puck in the corner and this line that has scored both goals. Doing a good job of borechecking here. trying to get the puck free for Bobby McMahon is Joshua up against the boards along with Rah. And when it does come free, it is Joshua up against the boards at the half wall. Now back in front of the net and but man couldn’t get his stick on it. Back come the Panthers. A pass off a stick goes down into the Leaf zone but no icing. Here’s Benois playing it off the glass and down into Florida territory. Leafs pressuring with Tavvaris. Puck up on the wing and out come the Panthers to center. Right wing side for Samoscavic. She sends it down into the Toronto zone. Greer playing it around the boards to the left wing side. Samoscavic is there to get it back to the point. Eplaned shot and stopped by Wall. It bounces up into the air and the quick left hand of Joey Wall stops play. I think KJ Greer got a piece of that right before it got to Wall, but Wall was out at the top of the crease. Yeah, Greer does redirect this, but the positioning of Joseph Wall is perfect and it ends up rolling up into his catching hand. Leafs win the faceoff, play it around back of the net. Stetcher, a pass to center to Tavaris. dropped it back to the Leaf defenseman. Now up on the wing and Knander sends it into the zone. Cowan trying to apply pressure, but it’s played away by Babski. And out come the Panthers to center. Bennett across the line, rolled off his stick off the goal stick then of Wall. And that allows Stetcher to carry the puck to center ice. Tavvaris up on the wing for Knander. Long shoot in goes wide to the goal. Played high off the glass to center by Florida. Chopped back into neutral ice by the Maple Leafs, but they can’t get it up the boards. And now Riley has it back in his own zone. A play up on the wing for Cowan. Does well to get it to neutral ice. Tavvaris looking for Knander, but he was stationary at the blue line. And that pass was intercepted by Luke Kunan. Played right back down into the zone. A pass up at center ice deflects down into the Toronto ant. Wall plays into the corner. Quick shot taken by the Panthers. Went well wide of the net. A hit there by the Leafs. Loren freed it up and it comes out into the center ice area. Loren will pressure Jones into the corner. Jones spun around. Puck is still free in there. They battle for it. Lton trying to get his stick extricated from a grasp and the Panthers get it free and get it out. Divine working it on the left wing. stops up at the halfboards into the slot for Marian and he lost a handle on the disc and the Maple Leafs are going to play it back down into Florida territory to get a change going. Here’s Marshian down the right wing side this time. Cuts into the slot. Shot was blocked. Leafs get it freed up and pushed ahead for Benois. Benois takes a hit there from Eklad but gets it down into Florida territory. Doy couldn’t come up with it and the Panthers Lundell will get it high into the center ice area and down into the leave zone. Matthews twisting and turning a pass ahead looking for N doesn’t connect. Matthews then follows it up. Gets a pass back and got a shot away and that was kicked away by Babski. Kept in and around back of the net. Nice play by Matthews to steal the puck again. Still has it into the far corner for Dhi. Back to the point. Stetcher dropping it back for Doy. Returns the favor. Troy Stetcher trying to send it to the net. Fought off by the glove hand of Babroski. Leaves keep the puck in. Down into the corner for Max now to Matthews in front. That went off a stick and it’s high to center ice. Marand is in over the line. Twoonone break. Good play made there. The Leafs defense got back to deflect it and Wall had to make a good save on his defenseman, but it was better than the option if it got by him. That would have been elevated. Shot back into the Toronto zone. Easy for me to say when it didn’t go in, right? Tavvaris shoots it in over the line. Petri trying to get it out and he does and coming through center ice on the backhand try as as Stud Nikov. That went into the corner. Knander arriving on the scene, but it’s dug out by Rodriguez. He loses it and Tavvaris is away. Tvaris to center with Cowan up on the left wing. Benois. Sharp bangle try. Rebound in front of the net. Went off of a body in behind Babski and went wide. Great scoring chance there for the Leafs who lead two to nothing. Benois playing it into the zone. Old team’s getting a change going. Rua almost intercepted a pass. Puck up the boards to center and shot right back into Florida territory. Babski couldn’t stop it. Back of the net. Joshua for the Leafs. Back to the point D to D. It comes to McCabe. Long shot deflected in front of the net when goes high into the corner and it is played to the line but not out. Here’s a chance for Stetcher and his shot was high and wide of the goal. Leafs pressing here. This line has been absolutely outstanding. Shot by Rua. Goes wide to the net. Here’s McMahon. Back to the point again. Ster drops it back to McMahon. His shot in traffic. A pad saved by Babroski. Leafs now with 17 shots on goal for Toronto. Gets the puck back in. And that line has done an excellent job here tonight, scoring both goals, but really have been tough on every shift that they’ve been on as Wall has to make a save as the puck is kicked out at center ice and Robertson fails to get away. Cleared back in on a delayed offside and the Leafs have it with Riley back of the net. Bank pass to center. Lton a drop pass for Oel. Oel goes in with a pass that was deflected back around the boards to the far side. Leafs trying to keep it in. Lton got enough of it to slow it up, but they can’t keep the puck in until they shoot it right back in with Scott Lton after it. Lton into the slot off a stick of McCabe to the far boards for N as the Leafs are in the midst of a change. Matthews trying to support gets the puck free. Back to the point to McCabe. Back it goes to Matthews. Matthews into the slot. Stetcher a drive. Kick to the net then by McCabe, but it was knocked off the side of the goal. Wouldn’t have counted anyway. Backhanded high and out and down the ice. And an icing call coming here as the Leafs have been hemming in the Florida Panthers as they try to improve on a two to nothing lead. Again, getting a lot of shots from the point in on Sergey Babski. That really has been the method for the Leafs in the last couple of games getting traffic in front. John Devarus very nearly cashes in on a big re rebound off Babroski. That was after Simone Benois had taken off up the left wing boards to get a shot on goal. And it was Max Stomy by the way with the redirection that Wall had to stop at his right at the top of the crease. His his shot was had a lot less velocity to it than if it had got past him to the Florida players. A long easy shot is gloved about 5 feet over top of the net by Wall. And there’ll be a faceoff coming in the Toronto zone. The Leafs leading by a score of two to nothing. You’re listening to Moltzen Leaf Hockey on TSN 1050 and the Maple Leafs radio network. Point shot to flex wide to the leaf gold. Another shot from an angle. Missed the net. Trying to push it out along the boards was Joshua. And he was successful in doing just that. Panthers get it to center and shoot it back in. Greer as Wall pumps it on the glass and around the boards. It’ll come to the blue line, but Joshua couldn’t get it any further. Now Meyers for the Leafs up on the wing and tipped out at center. Joshua shields the puck nicely. Tripped up there and taken down by Jones, but no call. Leafs have had the only power play of the game and have probably been shortch changed on two others. One on N for sure. Back into the zone and Matthews is in behind the defense. He said a goal backand hit the goal post. He had Babski down and out but couldn’t. He had gone too far by the time he had gotten the backhand away. Like the puck might have rolled on him in the last second. Nice trying to center and he did but it was out of the reach of Matthews and now the Panthers get it back at center and shoot it in. Cake McCabe punching it around the boards. It’ll come out at center as N tries to get it ahead for Doy. Matthews couldn’t help out. Panthers can’t get it in over the line and Matthews is back into the zone himself. Dropping for Doy a pass in front. Matthews a swinging shot that went wide of the goal. kept in by Riley and into the far corner. It goes back of the net. Eblad for Florida with 650 to go in the second period. It has been goalless. The Leafs with a two nothing lead. Tavaris a weak backhand that was stopped easily by Babski. Puck goes high off a stick on a deflection. So, it’s not going to be a penalty and a faceoff is going to be in the Florida zone. As a result, Matthews just jumped around Seth Jones. Couldn’t get that puck to settle really before he was pretty much off the angle. It is two nothing Toronto. You’re listening to Molson Leaf Hockey on TSN 1050 and the Maple Leafs radio network. Florida Panthers haven’t played since Wednesday and Austin Matthews backhand after beating Babski hit the side of the goal near the goal post. Riley after a faceoff win sends it towards the net that deflected in on goal and is going to be smothered by Babski with Tavvaris right on the doorstep. You would like one of your big lines to come through now, wouldn’t you? extend that lead to three because the way they’ve been playing defensively. I mean, Joseph Wall has had a couple of decent moments in the second period, but the border really has not pushed the Leafs in the Toronto zone. Draw one by Toronto. One time shot fought off by the glove of Babroski. There was a juicy rebound there, but no one got to it. Cleared to center and a glove pass. Tavvarus lets the Panther touch it and Florida now organizing in their own end. Eblad got it ahead, but it’s intercepted. Oliver Ecman Larson for the Leaf shoots it back into the zone. 6-10 to play in the second period. Panthers trying to work it out at center. It is lifted around the board. Slowed up back into the net by Wall. Scooped back in the corner. Played off the boards by Knander. Chipped along for Cowan. Tries to step away. Was interfered with there by Aaron Eckplad. Apparently that’s okay, too. He never touched the puck, did he? No, although I did think he was trying to draw the penalty. Off the line now. Brought in on the left side by Lton. And Lton’s going to get a call against him. And a penalty coming to Florida. And it’ll be Ecklad who may have dodged one bullet but didn’t dodge this one. And again, it comes off the rush. The Leafs opportunity. This time it was Scott Lton on a quick turnaround. And Eklad is going to go for holding. Leafs trying to extend a lead. They have a two nothing advantage. Hecklad getting the call. The interference on Cowan was not called, but a few seconds later, the hook was. That may be a veteran opposed to rookie thing, too. Oh, I think everybody knows who’s in the league and everything else. Yep. So, the Leafs on the power play. Matthews playing it along for Knander. He loses it. Matthews keeps it in. Tvaris trying to outfight his man but doesn’t. And now the here the Florida Panthers with no defenseman. Back trying to center and that was knocked away by Wall. Puck in the corner. Leafs come away with it. Knander trying to free it up. It comes right out in front of the net. They score. A short-handed goal and the Florida Panthers cut into the lead two to one. They had the puck. They had an opportunity to get the puck. They had numbers back there. It wasn’t an oddman rush, although that was dangerous. But the Panthers end up scoring despite the fact that Neander Well, there’s four of them on two Panthers and they don’t cover the player in front of the net. And here we go again with the discussion about no defenseman on. And it is Reinhardt who scores the short-handed goal. Second shorty of the year. And right away Craig RubĂ© is going to the second unit. So, a short-handed goal makes it two to one. And now the Leafs need a goal here on the power play just to restore the two nothing lead that they had. Down into the corner, doy centering pass in front of the net and it’s deflected just wide. McMahon gets it along for Oel. Back to the point it goes. Riley pass down low around the boards. Oliver Ecman Larson back to the other side. Trapped there by Doy. Back to Riley. Wrist shot coming. That was deflected high in the air to the near corner. Gets there along with Bobby McMahon. McMahon trying to dig the puck out. Still scrummed. It goes back to the net. Doi wrapping it around. Babrosky got there to tie it up and the Panthers get it out and down the ice. That’s really disappointing. number 15. Now, it’s one thing if it’s not scoring, but if it’s costing you the other way, that’s where it’s a little bit inexcusable. Knander up on the wing. It goes to NY. N trying to center for Matthews. That didn’t work. Knander with it on the near halfboards. Back to the blue line to Jake McCabe. McCabe getting it back again to Knander. Fann on the shot or did he break a stick? No, he just fanned on it completely. Back come the Panthers in across the line. They’ll get it down into the corner with Lundell taken to the boards. Knander knocked down on the play. Loses his stick. The puck is still free in the corner and the Leafs get it out. Pass for Knander. He’ll try to stretch things out and get it ahead for Tavarus. And now Matthews to the line and in with Ny. Played it towards the net and it’s going to be quickly smothered by Babroski with 330 to go in the second period. And a comfortable two nothing lead. And a power play with an opportunity to extend it to three. And four on two is not defended well enough to cause a short-handed goal. Nice got caught looking in front of the net instead of worrying about the guy who was in front of the net. And the Panthers score an easy one to make it two to one. I know we’ve talked about it before not being comfortable with the fiveman or five forwards in the power play. Draw one by Toronto. Shot by Benois. Deflected back of the net. Panthers after it. Lton couldn’t come up with it. Turning with it now is Valinskus. And he’ll get it up on the right side but out of the reach of Jeff Petri. It’ll roll in on goal and without any option to play it, wall covers and a faceoff coming in the Toronto end. Now I I mean it would be different if they were on fire. Oh, right. If the power play was clicking at about 25 26 27%. Yeah. Then you say, okay, you’re you’re going to give up the odd shorty. But when it hasn’t produced offensively and the amount I mean and this isn’t a one-off either, the number of short-handed breaks they’ve given up has been absolutely incredible. And that’s why it’s a little surprising to me anyway, Joe, that they keep going back to it. Play it around the boards. Leafs don’t get it out. Turnover and a wrist shot knocked away as Wall may have got a piece of that on a turnover on the far boards. Panthers try to sweep it in front and they do, but it’ll be poked up on the wing then by Robertson. He plays it down into the corner. Panthers are onto it again. Robertson digs the puck free and out they come. Stchard right wing side. Lton sends it into the near corner for Robertson. Robertson hooked there. The puck goes free. Here’s a centering pass by Ruah and Joshua couldn’t finish on the backhand. Joshua with it again. Back of the net for Ruah. Ruah shielding the puck with his size. Works it to the boards and back to the point. Oliver Ecman Larson with a point shot that deflected wide. Joshua on the near corner into the boards area for again. Back to the point. Another shot. Pad saving a good one. Rebound off a leg. Here’s Joshua back to the point once more near side. Riley shooting, gloved by Babroski. But this line easily has been the Maple Leaf’s best with 2 minutes left in the second period and Toronto’s lead now reduced to two to one. Be comfortable throwing them out in the power play as a unit, wouldn’t you? The way they play. Wait a minute. You might be on to something here, Mr. Ralph. Well, I mean, we had Max Max Stoi on that line, but certainly Juan, Bobby McMahon have been out there in the power play. I mean, what they’re doing is winning one-on-one battles, board, and and when you’ve got that confidence to throw it around the boards and knowing your guys coming up with it, that’s what makes you dangerous. Leafs have won 30 faceoffs to 11 for Florida. Played down into the corner. Toronto with a one-shot edge and shots on goal and a turnover here. Goes to Matthews. Closing. Doesn’t shoot it. Got it back to the point and send it into the corner. And now the Panthers are going to lift it high to center ice. Boy, you want him to shoot. No, I just about to say that. Yes. every time. Shoot the puck. That’s the range he scored on Tristan Jarry Saturday night. Absolutely. Nice got it across the line and into the corner. Looked to go in front now. Backhand pass in front. Matthews couldn’t tow drag it in front to go to his backand. And the Panthers with a minute 16 get it out at center. Marian a long lead pass knocked down into the far corner. Punched around back of the net and the Leafs get it up ahead for Simone Benois. Benois to the red line and into the zone. Or does it go in? No, it doesn’t. Comes back out at center ice. Greer has to wait for teammates to get on side. And now it is N out fighting his man for the puck and the Leafs regroup it back in their own zone. Pass ahead deflects down into Florida territory. Under a minute to play. Long lead pass has deflected down into the Toronto. And I think they’re calling this an icing. Yes, they are. They just hit the top of the boards, right? just took off. So, a faceoff coming in the Florida zone under a minute to play in the period. 41.6 seconds. Sorry, Jim. So much good has happened in this game, but the one bad has gotten the Florida Panthers right back into it. Draw to the right in the Florida zone. Dvaris leaning in. Won the draw as it comes back to the point. Riley can’t shoot it at the net. Got it in along the boards for Tavvaris. Cycled around back of the net for Knander to Cowan. Back for Willie. Knander with a bouncing puck and couldn’t control it. Panthers get it out and a break on the left wing side. Greer with a shot that is swallowed up by the left hand of Joey Wall. 21 shots a piece now for the two teams and a 2-1 precarious Toronto lead. Play for Sam Reinhardt. That’s his second short-handed goal of the season. Surprising thing for him coming in was minus 10 on the year. He’s actually been hot of late. That’s 12 goals down his last 15. Third short-handed goal scored against the Maple Leafs this season. Puck down into the offensive zone. Joshua couldn’t get to it and the Panthers will break it out with a dozen seconds left in the period. Cleared back of the net. wall blocks that played it around the boards. Kipped out at center ice by Bobby McMahon and it’ll be played high in the air for Greer. Greer will shoot it back into the Toronto end and time will run out. Well, the Leafs now in the same spot they were in Washington on Friday night. Two nothing lead turns into a 2-1 margin into the third period and they were able to hold on to a big lead in Pittsburgh on Saturday night. This is going to be a test for the Leafs here with a one-goal lead in Florida. So, after 40 minutes of play, it is a one-goal hockey game and we’ll ship it off to Jim Tatty and Anthony Stewart for our intermission. Um so when we’re watching, when we’re listening and we didn’t play in the NHL, we go, why do you have five forwards on the ice when it’s two nothing and it’s the Florida Panthers? Obviously, a team or a player would not think like that. So So give us some perspective here. Yeah, again, for me, I think the details need to be there regardless of the personnel that’s on the ice. And me personally, I’m not a big uh, you know, advocate for having five. I I like the traditional uh four plus one, but again, when you don’t necessarily have that one uh being a big trigger guy, you obviously have to maybe have uh five guys out there, but again, before you go over the boards and and Craig Brew is a Stanley Cup winning champion uh as a coach, and I’m sure he told these groups, be defensively responsible. this uh Florida Panther team can hurt you on transition. The first period they were, you know, skating really, really well and all they need is an inch to take a mile. So, for me, yes, there’s the mistake and the turnover at the blue line, but there was two or three other breakdowns after they made the initial save where I’m like, where’s the attention to details, right? And this is against a Stanley Cup winning team where um you know, I used to have Kirk Mueller always say, you guys got to have the killer instinct. And until I’m on this side of it, I didn’t really know what that means, but you have the power play of an opportunity to um you know, keep momentum or put the game away. You got to find a way at least keep it out of your net or uh you know, pass the puck around for the two minutes. So, it’s a bit of a gaff. I’ll give you that. But again, they’re still in control of this game. Uh it was a ma a mistake, a major blunder. Uh but if I’m Craig BubĂ©, hey, that’s the mistake. How do we respond? We just got to continue uh to push forward, get the team on their heels, get pucks below the dots and get to the net and just be a little bit more mindful of the puck and the possession and the turnovers uh going into this third period. Yeah, that was like a fire drill. I mean, four guys went after the puck carrier and dude was left open and scored. Uh but that’s, you know, that’s the one play. Um the other concern that I might have is the way the Panthers play and we said this earlier, doesn’t matter who’s got the jersey on, they’re going to play a certain way or they’re not going to be on the team. and they are depleted, but the guys that are replacing them are playing hard and that may be a problem. Although the Leafs do have the lead. Let’s let’s underline that one. Yeah. And um you know, I look for the positive. We’re talking about the glass being half full tats, right? So they’re dominating right now, I think, in the faceoff circle. I believe it’s as a group 60 uh 66%. You’re seeing uh Dvarus nine 10 wins, three losses. W 12 for 15 as well, too. So again, I think he’s in in there talking about the positives as opposed to the negatives. Right. this was a Florida Panther team that, you know, on paper should have came and ran them out of the building and turned it into a dirty boxing match. But again, they’re leading them in hits. So, when you sort of break down those stats, yes, you could say you have the advantage. But again, for me, it’s, you know, that’s an opportunity where you want them to say, “Hey, you know what? Tonight’s not our night as the Panthers. We’re not really going well. Bosski let in another two early goals. Let’s maybe pack it in.” But that goal gave them life going into the third period. So, that’s what I’m a little bit nervous for now because Florida again, they need an inch. They take a mile. Uh but they’re never out until the final buzzer rings. Uh just to um add to what you said, the Leafs are 75% 33 and 11 in the faceoff dot. So if you’re winning that draw, then you’re controlling what happens after the pucks dropped. U and let’s let’s not forget that in that period, N Matthews, and Tvaris had great a scoring opportunities that didn’t cross the line. Yeah, N I think was doing his impression of Mitch Mner. I don’t know what he was trying to do. He came in and pumped the brakes. You know, I I do that against my minor hockey teams where I snow the goalie and try to get that. But again, maybe he heard a voice and you know, sometimes the other team like, “Hey, I’m open. I’m open.” They call. So maybe he heard something there maybe in his peripherals there as well, too. But Austin Matthews and you that was a pretty unique poke check by uh Babroski where he actually had his blade turned over opening up uh you know, maybe an opportunity to put in his five hole. So again, the opportunities were there. It’s not like they’re sitting back just waiting for Florida to come back. They’re pushing back. Um you know, I noticed the third line got in on the forche. We saw um you know McMahon and uh Wall and um and and Joshua really leaning on them too. So I’m sure those leanings in the first and second periods will probably tire out Florida and hopefully they could get an opportunity to score another goal and hopefully put this game away. Well, that move that N does. I do that when I pay bills. Pump the brakes. Oh, I forgot my wallet. Got to go, guy. I’ll see you on the 35th of February. Goodbye. Let’s see. See you tomorrow, maybe. No, but uh you know I I think that you know what you can come out of this game so far is that that third line is doing a really good job. And I can’t stress that enough because uh you know for all of the season up until Saturday and and big parts over the last several years the third line was was somewhat negotiable. Yes. And uh again that’s what you need. You little need a little bit more chemistry. And the good thing about that now is the pieces are sort of starting to uh come together right. You’re seeing Knander obviously you know get some chemistry with Tavvaris and Cowan. We know Austin Matthews and Matthew Ny and the interchangeable third piece there too. Lton him coming back from injury has really been a staple uh on that fourth line and stabilizing that fourth line where even with them they’re not caught in their end. They’re not uh you know stuck in there for two and a half minutes too. They’re doing their job too. So the puzzle’s starting uh to come together with this lineup. Uh but that third line you know oftent times they call it the clock killer where they just go out there and give the the top six a bit of a break but they’re noticeable. you see them big, strong, leaning on the opposition where you you physically see them on the screen, uh almost dominating the game. So, yes, small sample size, but if they continue to play like that, you’re going to see them getting those goals. And it’s not like they’re coming in behind the back passes. They’re going straight line hockey, going to the net, second, third opportunities, crashing rebounds. That is very, very intimidation and size and speed is still a big factor in today’s NHL. Well, and if you go back to training camp when Lton got injured, I mean, his injury really sort of stopped that that line from forming, didn’t it? It did. It did. And and and again, he brings a dynamic. And yes, you know, you want him to get back to his 14 15 goal pace, but again, he’s a guy that has a lot of vinegar and a lot of vigor out there where he’s going to the net. He’s getting involved a little bit nastiness as well, and he really pushes the pace and challenges the other teams fourth line, too. So, he’s been a great big big piece regardless of what you see on the score sheet. Stu, thanks very much. It is Toronto 2, Florida 1 after 40 minutes of play. Third period coming. The Maple Leafs with a 2-1 lead over the Florida Panthers. And from the department of figures don’t lie, but liars can figure Mr. Ralph, the Leafs are 36 and2 in their last 11. However, they are 3-2 and one in their last six and one of those two, which was a regulation loss in Washington on Friday night. Similar situation we have tonight, a two-1 lead into the third period. But the win against Pittsburgh where the Leafs were able to maintain a lead, win a hockey game, a lead after two pushes their record. And this is baffling. 43 and one when leading after two, but they’ve only won half their game. And what was their record a year ago? Believe it was 351-1 or 361 and one. And the one and one came late in the season. Yeah. And I believe the first loss came in in February or March. So here is an area where things have to improve and an opportunity is right there now. Well, I would think if you’re in the top two lines right now, you’re saying we owe the guys one. We owe this team some offense at the other end. By the way, Florida, they have this is the 10th time this season they’ve trailed after the second period. They’re 08 and one win trailing after two into the third period. But I’m sure they’re sitting in the dressing room saying, “Boys, we got them.” Yep. So, we’ll see what happens. Puck is dropped. We’re underway. Puck down into the Toronto zone. Stcher trying to get it out. Had it knocked out of midair, though by Lundelle. Down into the corner. Comes to the side of the goal. Stcher is able to come away with it. Chipping it along the boards for Doy. He’ll backhand it out into neutral ice. Panthers are after it as it comes down into the Toronto zone. Wall teed it up as it comes around on the wall. tipped back out in center ice once more. Shot back in on a delayed offside. Time and space for the Maple Leafs to get a change in and Jake McCabe steps out from behind his goal. Sends it up at center to the line. Cowan was kind of dragged down there by Eklad. Centering pass. Knander in looking for a shot. Got it in front of the net. They bang away at it and it was knocked wide of the goal. Not sure it ever got to Babski. Good opportunity there for Toronto though. Cowan and Tavvaris battling along the boards. Cowan got it into the air. Grabbed by Samoscavage and he’ll get it down into the leaf end forcing Morgan Riley back. The veteran Riley up ahead. Ruis backhands it down into the offensive zone. Panthers around back of the net and they start up ice. A pass up on the left wing sent in by Bofest into the corner. Wall out of the net scrambling around but the puck comes free up on the wing for Bobby McMahon who pins his man to the boards. Puck is in the maze of skates. Finally dug out. Good play made there by Meyers to free it up, but the Leafs don’t get it out initially and now they do. Rua to center across the line for McMahon. Down into the corner it goes. Rua trying to center. McMahon got it into the far corner. Loren coming off the bench. Played around on the boards. Loren trying to get it down into the corner. Ran into a traffic jam there. trying to pry it from Valinskus and when it does it is lifted high to center and down the ice and there’s a chance for an icing here that will be called. Well, that last play that would have been what eight whistles in the 70s. Oh boy. Yeah, that is one one of the unbelievable things if you go back and watch old games and you can find them on YouTube from the 70s. If they wanted a whistle, the guy would just put his skate against the puck dropping on the boards and it would be an automatic whistle. Immediately blown dead. Y willing had a great opportunity and then John Tvaris whacked it a loose puck right in front of Babski. Draw to the right of Babski. The Leafs win the faceoff. Cleared in by Riley around back of the net. Matthews coming out in front with a jam and that was stopped the rebound. Oliver, but Larson looks for a man in front and it deflected wide of the net. Nice back of the goal. Matthews couldn’t get to it and the puck doy has it knocked out at center ice. Oliver Ecman Larson goes back played it ahead. Matthews to Ny who gets it down deeper into Florida territory. Lundell around the boards to the near side. Panthers break it out at center. Mikolah shoots it into the Toronto ant. Wall playing it into the corner for his defense and it’s going to be banked out at center ice and Doy pressures it as it comes back at center. Grabbed back then by Ster. He’ll shoot it back into Florida territory. Mikola playing it out into neutral ice. Pass to an open wing that the Leafs get to first and Jake McCabe regroups with Stetcher. And McCabe then almost lost the handle on it. plays it up at center right at the red line to a stationary Steven Loren who now sends it back into his own zone. McCabe coming right back at it. Played it off a body and a turnover brought back by Florida in on the left wing. A shot knocked down there by goalender Joseph Wall off Noah Greger’s stick. Puck to center ice. Shot in by Toronto and a change of players coming as the result. Gustav Forsling to the right wing side and shot into the Toronto end. Wall couldn’t stop it back at the net. Ben Penois does get it up on the wing, but it is trapped there at the halfboards. Sent back in behind the goal. Meyers up on the wing now for Cowan. He can’t get it by a defenseman and the Leafs do get it out. Knander has it at center. Willie trying to find some skating room. Got it to Tavvarus who backhands it down into Florida territory. Two to one Toronto. 1516 to go. Third period. Played back into the Leaf end. Wall on the boards for Oel. Played to the line but not out. Long shot well wide of the Leaf goal. Cowan Riley around the boards to the near side for Tavvaris. He’s going the wrong direction. The puck comes back. grabbed off in front of the net. No one there and the Leafs are going to get to a loose puck and Riley will launch it high to center and get it down into Florida territory. Panthers paced it right back to the red line and now get it down into the Toronto end right wing side. Bennett shooting it high and wide of the Leaf goal. Played again by the Leafs high to center ice. Valinskus drops it back. Florida changing approaching six minutes played into the third period. Two to one Toronto. And here it is. Penalty coming. We talked about that in the intermission that you knew Florida was probably going to wind up with a power play. Interference. Interference. Dakota. Yeah, he doesn’t like the call, but it was two nothing power plays for the Leafs and the Florida Panthers on a short-handed goal cut the lead to two to one. Boy, I mean this he grabbed onto him, didn’t he? Yeah. Give Samos credit. He grabbed Joshua from behind and fell and it’s an interference call. Oh, it’s a something about a dive, I think, is what uh Joshua was pointing out. But here’s the first power play of the game for Florida. They are 17 of 88. That’s 24 more power play opportunities than the Maple Leafs have had at this point. Yeah, they’re just one for 12 in their last five and 17th overall. Draw to the right of wall. Big part of the game about to unfold here. Jones to the near side. Samoscavich gets it into the corner. Samoscavich with a shot. Blockered away nicely by Wall, but the puck doesn’t get out far side. Back to the point to Jones over on the far wing for I believe that is Marand and his pass is a bad one. Goes all the way down the ice. Jones gets it in. Samoske works in with a shot that deflected wide. Marian loses the puck to the Leaf defender. Shot down the ice again by Toronto. Well, that was a good stick left by Austin Matthews. Brought on by Marian in on the left wing. Broken up at the defense and Matthews is breaking back. Twoonone with Raw. Matthews to W. Oh, and he shot it wide. And did Babowski get a piece of that? What a setup brought on by Sam Bennett. So both teams have great chances short-handed, but Florida scores on theirs at the point. Wrist shot coming. Knocked away by Wall into the corner. Reinhardt, did you think Babski got a piece of that? I’m I’m not sure. Looked like Wah had the better part of an open net. Offside at the Toronto blue line will stop play. 36 seconds left to go in the power play and Nick Rua shaking his head at the lead bench. And he’s trying to look up at the scoreboard to see the replay on this. And we’re going to see it. Austin Matthews and W take off on a twoon one. Yeah, he got a blocker on it. Now, what hurts on this is Wah being a right-handed shot on the left wing side. If he’s a right-handed shot, that puck travels another three or four feet and Babroski may not be able to get over. Brought to center ice by Bennett. Got it into the slot area. Grabbed off by the Leafs. Stcher tried to play it out, but didn’t have enough to get it past the defense. Kept in at the blue line. A weak shot on the near boards by Jeff Petri. went wide. Back of the net though is Bovist. Back to the point to Petri. Petri with a wrist shot coming. Knocked down in front of the net by McCabe who is still sore from that exchange and the Leafs get it out and down the ice and onto the penalty box is Joshua. Joshua couldn’t drive the net though, but he has it back of the goal. Penalty over. 12:05 to play. Third period. Two to one Toronto. The Leaf penalty killing which has been much better. Kills off a big one there. Back to the point and it won’t be kept in. Pushed by Willie Knander out at center. Racing after it is Cowan but he won’t get there in time. Played along the boards and now Knander hustles after it. Tried to reverse the puck to Cowan. There comes up on the right wing and stood Nika gets it out at center. played it in over the line and down into the leaf zone. Out of the goal is Wall back along for Meyers. Played up for Cowan. Cowan does well just to get it out. Panthers organizing in their own zone. They’ll shoot it into the Toronto in trapped on the fireboards. Point shot coming. Knocked into the corner by Wall. 22 shots for Florida. Here’s Jones closing pass broken up and then rolled ever so gently down into Florida territory. No icing. Jones playing it around the boards but N cuts that off. Tried to find Oliver Eman Larson but it was intercepted. Lundell for Marian. Marian taken off the puck in along the boards, but it comes into the slot. And now Matthews just plays it off the boards down into Florida territory. Eklad going back to retrieve it. Shots favor Florida. 23-21. 1026 to go in the third. Two to one. The Leafs hanging on to a lead down the boards and into the corner for Jake McCabe. Along the wall, it’s dug out. played up on the wing and Dakota Joshua gets it out at center in a race for it. Here’s Bobby McMahon. He’s alone. Oh, and a big pad save made by Babroski. He has made two huge saves. Leaf steel and Babroski’s going to cover up on this. Boy, he didn’t even flinch. Didn’t go down on the butterfly. Nothing. Just stood as ground on Bobby McMahon who fired it into his blocker. Guess hindsight being 2020, you go five hole there. A Joe. Wow. I guess. But what an opportunity the Leafs have had on a couple of glorious chances. It is still 2-1 Toronto though. You’re listening to Molten Leaf Hockey on TSN 1050 and the Maple Leafs radio network. Sergey Babroski has got an 882 save percentage and has been criticized a little bit for play that’s not like his, but you cannot argue with what he’s performed like here tonight. Yeah, two huge stops here in the third. Leafs win the faceoff, but it is intercepted on a centering pass. Rodriguez gets it up on the left wing and the Panthers send it in down the boards on a centering pass. Goes wide back to the point. Rodriguez keeping it in at the point. Forsling will send it along the boards. Centering pass intercepted and the Leafs start back. Cowan dishing it off now to Tvaris. He’ll shoot it in. The Leafs had to stay on side. Cowan gets there to try to chip it back, but it is played up on the left wing and the Panthers get it out. Rodriguez up on the right side. That’s a close play at the blue line, but play goes on. Play it around the boards for Cowan. Cowan goes cross ice to find an outlet. Jake McCabe returns the favor and Matthews gets in over the line trying to chip it to the net and it was easily caught there by Babski. Good effort by Austin Matthews nonetheless. He’ll get to the puck along the boards and outfights two players. Doi starts back the other way with N. Doy a shot. Oh, and another splendid glove saved by Babroski. Leaves Max Doi smiling. Another turnover by the Leafs. Austin Matthews engineered this and it was Doy and Ny that took off in the oddman rush, but Babroski won’t give the Leafs the insurance marker. Ny steals it back again but can’t get a shot. Two minutes to play in the third. You would think Babroski is going quick. Yeah. Well, the Leafs get a turnover and they still have 42 seconds to work with a power play. So, he’s not going anywhere until Florida gets possession and the Leafs will try to play a little keepaway here, I think. Here’s N getting it across the line on the right side for Stetcher. Matthews sets it up and the Maple Leafs are full marks. Full marks. Well, one small problem. 90 99% 99% full marks on a solid effort and and really the line of Dakota Joshua and Bobby McMahon and Bobby McMahon spearhead this backto-back games absolutely they were the best unit on the ice they’re also great in their own end yes well they weren’t down there a lot a whole lot but but just being physical being in the right position And I realize if you look at who’s out of the lineup for the Florida Panthers, um the Leafs were in a position you had to take advantage with what you had up front, even though it wasn’t the big boys that came through in this game. Um but I think from a Leaf standpoint, this might have been their most complete game of the season. Oh, I I hardly you could hardly argue that. Yeah, like like you said, I mean there is that huge blemish which was the short-handed goal given up when the leagues were out with five forwards in the power
