Should we just offer him the house?

  1. I’d offer him something but if I’m him I’m not leaving college or ND. He is set for life there and will ultimately win a championship if he stays long enough.

  2. How is he gonna build a staff? Come on man. A college coach. I go all out for tomlin. Next on the list is shula. After that idk. I gotta think about it.

  3. Let’s see how the Tomlin situation shakes out first. We are in no rush. Let’s get this right.

  4. Well the fortunate thing about overpaying coaches is it comes from John maras greedy pockets and not the salary cap

  5. Humbling in the sense that we’re a terrible destination for him, or am i reading this the wrong way?

  6. Is he a good coach? I haven’t watched much of ND, but I heard their strength of schedule was weak (1‑2 against ranked opponents). Is he just building good habits on a light schedule with no adversity until the playoffs? I don’t know if that even translates to the NFL, where you’ve got 53 men g-checking you every day to see if you’ll fold (paraphrasing what Aqib Talib said about Mike McDaniel). But yeah, maybe ND played tough schools and the guy coaches a hell of a game, I just don’t know enough about him.

  7. I do think hes got a good football mind. Always tough to tell how college coaches will translate but I dont think it would be the worst possible hire.

  8. Who is he bringing with him? Who’s going to be the OC and DC? Dabole was screwed by the DC. I still think he’s an incredible OC but head coach no. I think he’s an incredible head coach but who are the people around him will effect how well he does

  9. If college coaches are under consideration, why wouldn’t they give Kirby Smart a call? His program has developed more NFL ready talent than anyone in the last 5 years. I assume it would be difficult to pull him from his Alma matter but it would’ve worth an inquiry if looking at college coaches

  10. Dude makes north of $9 million a year in South Bend. He has the national stage, a massive NIL/recruiting machine at his back, and, I’m guessing, a hot wife. Why I earth would he give that up for….. New Jersey?? I mean, I grew up there and I’m not sure $9 million would get me back.

edit: oh who am i kidding hell yes it would.

  11. Honestly fuck it, let’s do it – a coach’s salary doesn’t count towards the cap anyways. In that interview released yesterday, he certainly seems to be intrigued by the Giants.

  12. Sorry, I’m also a Notre Dame fan. I’ve been waiting a hell of a lot longer for a national championship than a Super Bowl. Freeman stays.

  13. People who want Tomlin haven’t watched a Steelers game in the last handful of years. Terribly run team and an unserious roster. Freeman is about more interesting than the other names being floated around.

  14. If someone offered me a house but Mara would be president of the HOA that would absolutely be part of my decision making process. Were the new snyder team being held back by incompetent ownership and their nepo baby staff

  15. Compared to some guys I have heard being floated as candidates this guy does not look bad. No way is he worse than Arthur Smith and Matt Nagy.

  16. I’m basically pro-whoever makes us better. There’s no prerequisite. Are there candidates who I’d rather not consider? Yes! But if Freeman becomes what Pete Carroll was for the Seahawks with us, I’m not gonna care if he never coached in the pros. But this will also apply to X candidate not having X experience/success.

I sense that this is a situation that would test the patience of many great coaches but Freeman (who’ll be 40 next year) can be a fit in terms of his youth in relating to players. We will be one of the youngest teams in the league.

He fits the CEO type coach but he’s gonna make sure he has a good offensive play caller (would he retain Kafka?).

  17. David Shaw crossed my mind recently. Not as a candidate now (he is an assistant in Indy) but it feels like this organization loves to express interest in college coaches from high profile college known for their academics or being portrayed as a program builder (Rhule was a serious candidate when he was at Baylor). Freeman is a better coach than Shaw and Rhule but this team tends to float this type of coach, although the Mara’s ties to the Catholic Church and the ND program heighten this interest.

  18. The real question is, why would he leave ND? He’s got a pretty sweet gig there and is eventually going to win a championship there. While the Giants coaching position is apparently more of a sought after job than before I’m really feeling Shula, the Mckvay tree needs to be tapped.
