Anthony Richardson TRADE? | Minnesota Vikings Rumors

[Music] Yo, what’s going on everybody? Appreciate you guys tuning in to Vikings now by chat sports. My name is Patrick Steman and coming up on today’s show, we’re going to talk about the quarterback position. We’re going to talk about a polarizing quarterback, that being Anthony Richardson. Yeah, we’re going to talk about it on today’s show. Doesn’t make sense for the Vikings to trade for the Colts QB this off seasonason. We’ll dive into it here in a second, but also later on today’s show. I’ve been thinking about the QB position a lot. Obviously, it’s the most important position all sports, and I have a pretty strong take on how the Vikings should handle this uh position group this off seasonason. So, we’ll give you guys that um take here on the second half of today’s show. But before we do so, if you guys could hit that subscribe button today, we are knocking on the door of 68,000 subscribers. So if you guys want to help me reach my next milestone of 68K, go down there, hit that subscribe button. Just need 70 more of you guys to do just that. All right, let’s dive into it. Anthony Richardson, does it make sense for the Minnesota Vikings? Now, this has been talked about a whole lot in the comments section, Twitter. A ton of Vikings fans are wondering who could be that quarterback the Vikings bring in. Will they go a veteran option? Will they go M. Jones? Well, how about a guy that Kevin Okonnell likes a lot? Because if you guys remember after the Sunday night football game against the Indianapolis Colts last year, this was the first game that Anthony Richardson got benched for Joe Flacco. After the game, Kevin Oonnell comes up to Anthony Richardson and said, “You’re a bad dude.” Yes, sir. Now, also when Anthony Richardson was coming out of Florida, there were multiple reports suggesting that the Vikings were doing everything they can to trade up to select Anthony Richardson. And you think about the archetype of quarterback that Kevin Oonnell, two of them that he has tried to trade up for, Anthony Richardson, Drake May now slightly different, but still big stature, big arm, good athleticism. And right here, KOC saying, “You’re a bad dude.” And AR saying, “Yes, sir. Maybe Kevin Oonnell if he’s got a lot of say on who they bring in. I could see him wanting Anthony Richardson. But, you know, there’s no doubt Richardson’s been a disaster so far in the NFL. Um, just hasn’t been good enough. He has looked lost out there. Um, some people even in the Colts organization question his leadership. He’s incredibly inaccurate with the football. Um, even 2024 season, I mean, eight touchdowns, 12 picks, 19 big time throws, 15 turnover worthy plays, adjusting completion percentage all the way down at 60.1. Um, but even in 2023 in a very limited sample size, three big-time throws, four turnover worthy plays, a higher completion percentage, but still uh not up to standard at the NFL level. And I will say this, even though M. Jones, like I am not saying, so nobody clipped this. I am not saying Anthony Richardson is a better quarterback than M. Jones. Nobody would say that. But I would rather have the Vikings bring in Richardson over M. Jones. And the biggest pro to that is if you trade with Win Richardson and he ends up starting for you, there is no chance you are in NFL purgatory. Because if he ends up working out, all right, you’re probably winning 12, 13 games if he reaches his potential. If he doesn’t work out, you’re probably winning three or four games, even if that. So, I would rather have the Vikings kind of have, and JJ’s kind of the same way right now where it’s like, all right, you got JJ McCarthy ceiling. I still believe it’s pretty damn high. Anthony Richardson obviously he’s got one of the highest ceilings in the league just because of how athletic he is and how big that arm is. Um and also but like both those guys have extremely extremely low floors or I mean JJ’s looked like Jammarcus Russell and even before um JJ like Anthony Richardson looked like Jammarcus Russell. So they are very you know polarizing guys, high ceilings, super low floors and I’d rather the Vikings do that instead of going out and getting a guy like M. Jones. And you could also go get a Jameus Winston. You could go get a Joe Flacco, but it’s almost with all of these guys like like you bring in Jameus, Vikings will win in eight games next year. You bring in Flacco, Vikings will win in eight games next year. You bring in M. Jones, maybe the Vikings win 10 games. But with all of these quarterbacks starting for Kevin Okonnell, yes, it would be a very successful regular season, you’d win some football games, maybe you would save Kevin Okonnell’s job, but you’d lose in the first round of the playoffs. So, I’d rather go big fish hunting and, you know, just finally have the Vikings like really put their nuts on the table. I guess they technically did this last offseason. It didn’t end up working out, but that’s how you’re probably going to have a top 10 pick. Like either go all in or just don’t do it at all. Um that’s how I would handle it. But you guys let me know, would you trade for Anthony Richardson? Give me a T for trade. Give me a P for pass. If if they don’t bring in anybody else, screw it. Bring in Anthony Richardson. Also, um here at the chat sports office, I am known as the Anthony Richardson guy. So this would be uh I was also known as the JJ McCarthy guy. So if JJ and Anthony Richardson both screw over my Minnesota Vikings, it would be pretty funny. But, uh, that’s just a totally different conversation. But you guys know, would you trade for Anthony Richardson? T for trade, P for pass. All right, we’ll talk about M. Jones a little bit more in depth and talk about how I would handle this QB situation. But before we do so, got to give a massive shout out to today’s sponsor, and that is Factor Meals. All right, so my take on the quarterback situation, you just ride it out with uh JJ McCarthy here. And again, similar argument I was making with Anthony Richardson where it’s like, hey, if excuse me, you know, if JJ ends up working out, like best case scenario, like JJ’s a franchise quarterback, but also worst case scenario like JJ McCarthy is awful. He looks more of like what he’s done um so far this season, then you probably land a top five pick. That’s what I would do. Again, this is kind of and this is super high risk, high reward situation, but I feel like the Vikings, they are so desperate right now that they need to do that. Like, you either need to put everything on the line. Like, you drafted this kid 10th overall, so just say screw it, we’ll give you all 17 games next year, let him develop because also there’s a chance Jay McCarthy can still be the franchise quarterback. I understand it has looked so bad here early on, but it’s also looked bad with Bryce Young and he’s a starting caliber quarterback now in the NFL. It’s looked bad with other guys and then they have turned it around. Keep in mind this guy has made six starts. He is the youngest quarterback in the National Football League. And some of his games he had to go to Detroit, two Green Bay, the Ravens, the Bears, the Falcons, who have a good pass defense, and then on the road in Chicago. Like, it’s not like he’s like, I don’t know, Tyler Shuck playing the Dolphins and Falcons and all this. Like, he’s had tougher competition. And now also after seeing how Max Bromer played and how bad he’s been in this offense, it also makes me start to question like was it JJ McCarthy or was it Kevin Okonnell? Like still left to be, you know, seen there. So I still think there’s a chance. Um JJ is a franchise guy and I would be so against them trading for M. Jones because if you trade for M. Jones, you know what you’re saying to your fan base? We know our jobs are on the line and we’re just trying to be mediocre because you trade for M. Jones, you win 10 games. You lose in the first round of the playoffs. You’re also telling the fan base that it’s like, yeah, JJ McCarthy, that 10th overall pick we had, we just completely botched it. Now, I say that I’m fully against the Vikings trade for M. Jones. I am so confident they will trade for him this off season. They will give up a second and a fourth round pick for M. Jones. It is December 2nd when I’m saying this. I promise you the Vikings will trade for M. Jones this off season and it will be another terrible decision by this front office because guys, it’s just human nature. like Quzy understands he’s on the hot seat. Kevin Oonnell even probably understands he’s on the hot seat. So, do they want to take that, you know, super high-risisk, high reward player and then Anthony Richardson or JJ McCarthy, or do they want to take a proven guy where his ceiling is super super low and a guy like M. Jones? But they’re probably saying to themselves, “Well, we won’t get fired if we win 10 games. We got a way better chance to win 10 games with M. Jones than anybody else.” So, that’s what they’re going to do. It is going to be the most vanilla off seasonason in the world for the Vikings where we’re going to be rolling in the next year. It’s M. Jones, it’s Jefferson, Addison, probably not TJ Hawinson, but the Vikings like then they’re going to win eight, nine, 10 games and nobody’s going to get fired. And then we’re just going to have to reset it the next off seasonason. We have the 15th pick in the draft. We’re going to be saying, “Man, how are we going to get a franchise quarterback?” We’re always in the middle. M. Jones, he is purgatory. You want to stay in the position you are right now? Yes. If you go out in there and get M. Jones, if you’re trying to win games in September, October, November, this is your guy. But if you want to finally take a risk and just do it again, because you have to, like you took a risk with McCarthy, but you got to have to take another risk again. Because if you just go back to M. Jones, like this is the same thing of like bringing in a Kurt Cousins. It’s the same thing as like what the Vikings have been doing for the last 21 years under the Will family where they just keep on getting these stop gap quarterbacks who can man the ship for one or two years. I would just be very much against it. what I really think the Vikings uh will and that’s who I’ll say to this question. I think it’s going to be M. Jones. Um and I’m going to be pissed off, but you guys let me know who would be the QB1 for the Vikings next season. Drop that name down below. Get on out of here. As always, go bikes. [Music]

  1. I agree that Mac Jones would be wasted pics for mediocrity. I don’t think the Richardson conversation even deserves a response 🙂
The biggest issues I have with McCarthy:
    1. He has only played in 25% of the games he has been eligible for. There is no evidence suggesting he will be available on a consistent basis, for example, all 17 games next year.
    2. Jefferson and Addison would probably request trades if JJ is still at quarterback. If the Vikings decide to honor and move off of players like that, then who is JJ going to throw to? Then the excuse will be JJ has no weapons.
I would rather trade multiple first round picks to get someone like Burrow, Herbert, Lawrence, etc. to show the internal staff/players and fan base that they truly give a shit about the QB position.

  3. Oh, lord. The Vikings currently have a rookie QB who struggles to complete 50% of his passes and now people are talking about the team trading for another young QB who struggles to complete 50% of his passes; taps out of games when he is winded; and seems to think that not being able to competently pass the ball is something that isn’t relevant! Someone please tell me why anyone is giving any relevance to a QB who was replaced by a veteran QB that could be starting for the Vikings right now, if KOC & Kwesi hadn’t bought into the delusional hype that KOC was a QB whisperer who could win with anyone playing QB. Are people seriously thinking about KOC fixing another QB who can’t pass the ball or run an offense just because that QB wants to go to a new team?

  4. I understand that the game has changed at the QB position mostly because the college game has changed and not necessarily for the better. Like many of the top QB’s from the past, the best QB in the history of the league wasn’t known for his athleticism, but instead he was known for his cerebral abilities. If teams just draft QB’s based on their athleticism and hope that their brain cells develop too, there will be more failures than successes! Honestly, since these two Einstein’s sabotaged the franchise by destroying the cap and sent SD too Seattle I’m not sure what should be done other than to fire them! Is the goal to try to get a top 5 pick after next season? Because it is possible that JJ develops enough to not play like the worst rookie in NFL history, other than JaMarcus Russell, and the Vikings win 7 or 8 games ending up with a mid round pick. How would that be any different from a questionable veteran like Mac Jones coming in and winning 7-8 games? The goal is to win a Super Bowl is it not? So, unless you honestly think JJ will eventually develop from arguably the worst rookie in NFL history to a QB capable of winning 14 games with a lot less talent around him because he will potentially be making 50 million per year even if he develops into a mediocre QB leaving less money for other good players, I’m not sure JJ is the answer. I think you are totally missing the other pieces of the puzzle. If the goal is to tank for a top drafted QB, then the team needs to unload the highly priced subpar FA’s Kwesi signed and unfortunately not give JJ very much support. If he improves without being coddled then maybe he has a future?

  5. What do you. See in JJ he gets worse every game JJ will not be good dont care how young he is if he had a spark you would have seen it i agree mac jones no

  6. Would be another mistake for our franchise. The franchise that can't seem to make sound decisions ….hence…he will surely be in purple. 😂

  7. Terrible take here Patrick. We've seen enough of Richardson to know that he's definelu a freakish athlete….but he's NOT a talented QB.
