BREAKING: Browns open 21-day window for Deshaun Watson to return to practice

Uh, Mary Kay Cabot just reported this morning. It has happened. Let’s see the tweet. I would love to show you guys the tweet. Social news desk isn’t working. We will not show the tweet. Read.com reporting that the Browns have opened the 21 day window. And before we get into it, let me do a read first here, Bull. Why not go ahead. And the NFL Sundays move fast. — finish my sentence, we also, while we’re talking about Ohio State, should mention that Brian Hartline has taken the head coaching job at South Florida. Great, great hire. Great move. Yeah, love, love that move, um, for Brian. I think that’s one of the best. Uh, non-power 4 jobs in America. Um, Alex Goli, who’s a former Buckeye, took the job at Arkansas. Alex Goli did, and, or is it, no, did he go to Auburn, Auburn, excuse me, he went to Auburn. Arkansas with Silverfield. Um, but South Floridas, they’re building their own stadium now for the first time. Like Goli got a bunch of money raised. I mean, it’s a really good job and you’re in freaking Tampa. So good for him. Yeah, we’ll see. I, I, I know that, obviously he’s done a great job. We’ll, we’ll get into that later, but I wanted to get back to what I was saying. The 21 day window, the Browns have opened it up for Deshaun Watson, and even more importantly, Mary Kate said in her report. Yeah, he’s practicing today. He will be on the field going through the quarterback repetitions. Whether he gets any 1st team reps, 2nd team reps, 3rd team reps remains to be seen. A lot of controversy if he gets any 1st, but Deshaun Watson will be on the practice field today going through practice as one of the members of the Cleveland Browns for the 1st time all season. Yeah, I think we need to put down a poll. Will you lose your mind if Deshaun Watson gets any 1 team reps? Yes or no? Is that acceptable for Deshaun Watson to get any first team reps? Or if he does get first team reps, does that mean Kevin Stavansky hates Shador more than he hates Deshaun Watson? What do you think? No, I wouldn’t give him any first team reps. No. I would give him first team reps if he thought he’s gonna play, right? Yeah, yeah, I, I, I agree. — If he’s gonna
— play, he’s got to get reps, yeah, right, — but he’s not gonna play
— right now, so no, I, I, I would be surprised if he got any reps with the first team. He’s not going to be active, right? So here’s how it works. Not, not this week. They have 21 days now from now till to activate Deshaun Watson and put him on the actual 53 man roster. If they do not activate him during this 21 day window, he goes back in the PUP list, cannot play the entire season. So they have 21 days, which means it’s an evaluation process. They can see if the guy is worthy of playing, he’s healthy enough to play, all those things that go into it. And, and at that point in time, the Browns can make a decision about whether, whether to play him or not. If you look at that 21 day stretch. Assuming they use the whole 21 days, takes him out of the running for Tennessee. No, no, I’m I’m just saying time wise it would take him out of the running for Tennessee, takes him out of the running for Chicago, takes him out of the running for Buffalo, which leaves Pittsburgh and Cincinnati as the two games after that 21 day window for DeShaun to potentially play. Now they could activate him prior. No, no, they could activate him prior. I know, but those, I just can’t imagine he’s going to play. I, I mean, if he’s healthy and Shador got hurt, I, I, would you rather go — Watson
— over? I’d rather see Watson one more time. He’s under contract. I might as well see him one more time, but I mean, I listen, at this point, yeah. They’re paying the guy, yeah, paying him a lot of money, paying a lot of money, — a lot
— of money. I mean it’s a lot of money to be a spectator. It feels like he’s completely shot as a football player, but you never know. I mean, he looked terrible last year when he played. Yeah, — I mean
— it’s been 5 years since he was a good footballer. I mean the bar is so low right now for the quarterback position in Cleveland that maybe, maybe the pressure’s off of him if he comes back out and. — But is it about pressure or I
— have no idea. I have talent. I have, — I don’t think
— he’s lost his talent. He’s lost some of it with the injuries, shoulder injury, Achilles. — You’re
— right. He’s lost some of the explosiveness, but in terms of the ability to throw the football and like his, his brains, like he’s always, always was a smart guy. I don’t know. I, I do think some of it’s mental. He was, he’s scared to throw the ball down the field. — He was
— like that’s what I’m saying. The mental, the mental aspect of it is something I, — I would be curious to
— see. I just, sorry to cut you off, but I just remember last year in the 6 games, 7 games he played after that shoulder injury, which was a rare, kind of never seen before shoulder injury for a football player. Some of the deep passes, some of the out routes, I mean, it was a sitting duck waiting to be picked off and ran back the other way. I, I just don’t know what the arm talent is left, and it’s, it’s, I think Mike, uh, Anthony, can you put that deterioration. His career stats in Cleveland. Can you imagine, uh, the day he, he traded for him, I went bananas. I was so excited. If you would have told me there’s, — there’s your
— 100 million. — This is what
— you got. I, I, I, there was no, you could never have convinced me that this was, would have been the reality of the situation. My worst, the worst case scenario to me was he’d be OK. Like that’s, — I couldn’t have imagined any lower than him being OK
— if you do the math right now, uh, Steve, put that graph back up for one second. 1212 million touchdown, 12 million a touchdown, — $12.1 million per touchdown pass thrown for Deshaun
— Watson. Well, that may be a lot unless you’re Odell Beckham Jr. — Then it’s
— not a lot. You’re gonna make Earl upstairs mad. Come on, come on. Why are you gonna trigger Earl? Why am I triggering Earl? Earl said he agreed with me. You don’t want to talk about it. But we’ll talk about, we got to talk about it at some point, maybe not today, but the fact that Odell Beckham said $20 million a year is not enough money. To live on forever, I think, I think he was talking about because the guys have a lifestyle that, well, they don’t have that lifestyle. Nobody feels bad for you. I don’t think he was saying it to make, was he saying it to make people feel bad for him. He was, I saw the clip. — I
— saw the clip. First of all, why do you have to go the rest of your life without working anyway? I mean he’s, how much money? And, and that’s bogus anyway because how much money has he made on endorsements and stuff like that? Zillions. I’m sure. I just think my take from takeaway from it, um, was that he was just trying to. Tell people that when someone says 100 million, it’s really not 100 million. It’s like it’s like 30 million after after it’s not 30 million or whatever it is carried away. It’s it’s about 40. Everybody pays taxes or everybody should except the big corporations with billionaires. They don’t pay their taxes. Everybody else does. So we all, he can’t say, well, you got to pay. We all know everybody pays taxes, but most people can’t afford to. Half the country can’t afford a meal. I’m gonna feel bad, bro. They’ll beckham. It’s 20 million a year. He goes, by the time you spend all this money and blah blah blah, then you’re down to 4 million a year. 4 million a year. Half the country won’t make $4 million in their life, working 60 years, 70 years, maybe more than half the country. I don’t think that was the conversation. F him then for even bringing it up. I’ve sidebarred us. Uh, Deshaun Watson, is he going to play? I, will he take a snap for the Browns this year. I’d be shocked if he plays. I would be. And, and — maybe
— that’s not right. Nothing would shock me with this, but I’d be shocked. Nothing would shock me with this team. OK, will he play? Will he take a snap for the Browns this year? No If he does, will he get booed? Yes, uh, probably I don’t think he ends up playing. I actually don’t think he’d get booed, really, I don’t. — They booed him when he got
— hurt. Yeah, — I think he gets booed on
— some field. I mean, it was, I think it was a small fact. — How many people really booed him when he
— got hurt enough that people made a story out of it. I know, but the fans have also witnessed a lot of bad quarterback play this year. And, and at any point if he comes in the game, I just think it’s, there’s sort of a little bit of excitement to, there’s some unknown. Like what if, what if, what if DeSean is DeSean again? No, I don’t think it happens, but like, what? Just what if impossible. What if DeSean is still DeSean somehow? No. What do you mean? It’s been 5 years. I said, I said, what if? Well, I didn’t say it’s gonna happen. I said, — what if
— that’s like a 1% chance he is not gonna take a snap for the Browns. In fact, I bet he doesn’t even get activated. They opened this window because they had to. They had, well, I don’t know if they had to, but. At some point, — at some point
— you have to, not necessarily, not if he’s not ready to play. You can leave someone on the PUP list the entire season without putting him on because I know that I thought you had to put him on full season injury reserve if there was no chance you gonna play. I mean — you could always you could be thinking well maybe maybe he’ll be ready
— at some point. I thought he has to go on an active roster after 21 days. No, they don’t have to activate him. Let’s see what Mary Kay said. If they don’t activate him after 21 days, he, he, he’s done for the year. That’s what happens. Either way, well, he’s getting his money guaranteed. Either way, I don’t think he’s gonna, I don’t think he will take a snap. Did you put up that poll, Anthony? Uh, yes, I did. Let me check Leroy in and I’ll get you the, uh, OK, I would like to know the results of, of, of that. Will people be angry if DeSean gets even one first team? Well, here’s the thing, they can’t put him on IR if he’s not hurt. Like if he’s back here practicing and he’s healthy, they have to activate him. Yes, but if, uh, he’s not 100% healthy and he’s willing to play along, then why would, why would he want to play along? He wants to play, but they don’t have to play him, so no, — but
— he’d have to go on the active roster. Maybe his only chance of ever getting another job again is if he’s. Helps the team that paid him all this money out. There’s a lot of hypotheticals there, — a ton
— of hypotheticals. So our poll results, 54%, yes, they will lose their minds, 46% no. Mm, that’s an interesting one.

The Cleveland Browns have designated QB Deshaun Watson for return to practice.

Watson started the first seven games of the 2024 season. He threw for 1,148 yards and five touchdowns, while adding 148 rushing yards with a score. He sustained an Achilles injury in Week 7 against the Bengals and was placed on injured reserve on Oct. 22. Watson underwent two surgeries to repair his right Achilles tendon rupture, the first on Oct. 25 and the second on Jan. 9.

A player designated for return has 21 days to be activated or must remain on the reserve list for the remainder of the season. | https://www.clevelandbrowns.com/news/browns-designate-qb-deshaun-watson-for-return-to-practice

  1. So recovering from throwing shoulder surgery is only an excuse for certain QBs I guess 🤷🏾‍♂️, If he is healthy make him earn that 43M and let 12 get the Jordan love/aaron rodgers development

  2. Fantastic, draft kid from Indiana, Carnel Tate, rebuild offensive line, trade Shadeur, we gotta get back to Gib Shanley Quarterback Club days. These clickbait days are tiring.

  3. 100 million is not that much if your living in certain communities and lifestyles. I make a lot of money and I’m living nicely, but if I lost my job I would have 2 months to find a job making similar money or chance my whole lifestyle and I made over 100 million in the last 15 years. Now if I moved to Cleveland with my salary for a year I’m set for life. That might be what he was talking about.

  4. I don't think he was scared to throw interceptions. I think that shoulder injury was a big problem and we will find out more in the future of why he will only throw the ball 30 to 40 yd down the field one time out of the game

  5. Funny how they talk so badly about watson when ever qb has looked like trash since him. Bull dont know jack. He was the same person saying Flacco was washed up and done until he went to the Bengals with actual receivers. The only thing that has currently gotten better since watson is the running game. Jeudy and the other receivers dropped balls from watson as well.

  6. I came here for getting G bush..kind of like mcnuggets.. but the rest of these people talk about these athletes like they aren't real people. Bull Jay Jason are so disrespectful

  7. The browns has had some of the best quarterbacks in the league and they still trash…. you had Jamison and Flacco and watson and baker and still had a losing season

  8. It actually makes sense, IMHO. They will have Sanders start the next three games, and, if he proves he absolutely can't be the answer next year, they have Watson start the final two games and see if he's recovered from the shoulder and the leg–in other words, see what they have in him. And, since they have to pay him anyway, and since they're absolutely going nowhere in those final two games, why not at least take a look and see if he has anything to offer?

  9. Let him practice for 2 weeks then start him. We know sanders and Gabriel blow, let’s c if he can play now after everyone gave up on him. Maybe’s he’s hungry again and last year the team failed him more then he was terrible. What is Mike talking about his arm looked fine last year, it’s looks better then any qb we have now

  10. I wouldn't be mad at allnif he plays….the Browns are paying him how many million? If he is the best QB we have….play him. If he plays good…keep him and the best rookie QB we already have….that would leave all kinds of.options to draft support players in next year's draft.

  11. Is there a positive spin on Watson's return. I think there is. He has a pro bowl resume and had won big-time while a Texan. He could be a credible advisor for both Sanders and Gabriel… IF the coaches encourage his input and he accepts the challenge to do something positive for the team.
