ALL Denver Nuggets Postgame Media vs. IND๐ŸŽ™๏ธ

Uh, I thought after the first quarter we were much better. The second quarter was really uh, good to see. We haven’t seen them play like that in at least five games. Um, so we got into them and you know what, I’d rather, you know, make mistakes later in the game by fouling and put them on the line. You know, we kind of extended the game by being aggressive, but that’s what we have to do. We have to tow the line. Uh, it’s the best version of oursel. Uh, because again, I’m going to keep saying like we’re going to score. It’s just what it is. It doesn’t, you know, we’ll have guys in, we’ll have guys out. this team can really score. They can really shoot it and pass it. And then obviously when Jamal has a night like this, um, you know, I hope people understand it’s not the 52 points, it’s the 19 of 25, 10 for 11 from three, four for five from the free throw line. That is insane efficiency. It’s one of the most I’m guessing one of the most efficient 50point games of all time. Uh, but I was, as far as the team goes, I was proud of the second quarter. We turned the game around. It was because of our defense. Can you describe the feeling of watching Jamal when he gets hot like that for you just like as you’re coaching it as you’re watching? I didn’t I didn’t realize he had as many points as he did to be honest. I mean he we were going to him a lot. Um but yeah, you can tell when he gets in a certain rhythm the way the ball comes off his hand. Uh the way he releases his legs uh he just has that feeling. I can remember years back, I believe it was during co, but at Cleveland, a very similar 50point game with no free throws, which I I don’t think I’d ever seen that before in my life. So, there are nights where he can be really special um shooting the ball. He’s always special offensively, but just the rhythm he had tonight and the flow, uh you know, he’s one of those guys that when you see it, and the other thing with Jamal is he can do it in the playoffs, too. And he’s proven he can. Uh so, these are special 50point nights for him. Uh but more importantly, a good night for our team. You called him earlier this season one of the best players of his generation. I think that’s a label that people from the outside probably don’t associate with him just because of the lack of accolades. Is it the playoffs? What makes you feel that he’s sort of in that area? Um, who decides who gets what accolades is what I’d say to that. Um, all I know is he’s got a ring at his house. He’s got a triple devil in the finals. He’s got multiple 50-point games in the playoffs. um the amount of games of a team he’s on that how many games we’ve won over this decade and obviously Yolk’s been there too but that’s been the standard those two guys uh over and over and over every year and up to this point this season uh I would say his level of play has been very very above average because we keep losing at home. Uh, no. I I don’t know. I I really don’t. Maybe I Maybe it’s the just the idea of having a veteran team that understands how to do this, right? You know, we’ve been on the road for a long time. You kind of figure out uh, you know, what your routine is. You know, how you get through it. Now, you’ve been to these cities over and over. You’ve been in the same locker rooms. Uh, usually the same hotel. And I do think that matters. I think experience matters. They’re not afraid of the of the crowd noise, the moment, the energy of of the home team. Uh, we just kind of play our game. Uh yeah, that’s a great number. I didn’t realize it was eight. Um so yeah, it’s u so we must have been eight of our last 12 then because we’ve lost four in a row at home. Yeah. So yeah, I don’t know. Proud of the guys though. They had a mature way about them uh throughout all those games. Some tough environments. Uh so another good win. when you guys were defending better in this game. It felt like the rotations were pretty clean and health, but what did you kind of see just from on ball and from team defense in general when you guys were able to string together some? Yeah, I thought the physicality backed up by proper shrinking and, you know, early, you know, early to help your teammate out after we I thought were just letting them lay the ball in for a while. Um, I thought the guys responded, realized this is just it’s gone on for too long. uh you know sit down and guard and playing defense in the NBA is really hard. It just it just is. There’s so many guys out there that can make plays. You saw McConnell did there for a while. Seakum’s a multiple time all-star. Mathan extremely talented. You have all these people out there. So I think it takes just a mental toughness that not every night, even if you play good defense, you’re still going to give up points in this league. But you have to have a standard for yourself and how you play nightly. And I thought it was better tonight than it has been, you know, in the recent games. Victory tonight’s amazing. Yeah. I saw an interesting article pouch this evening in the Wall Street Journal, which is not a sports publication. It’s about Nikolovic actually. And the title says the NBA superstar Wilming. Yeah. And I would say probably I mean I the stats are probably what they’re pointing to just some of the things he’s done that are similar to what those guys have done. Um and and all those guys are so unique to themselves. And that’s the great thing. I think the special thing about Nola is I hate comparing him to anybody because he’s the first of him. Uh just like there was the first Wilt of First Jordan. Uh you know guys of my generation Kobe and all these guys Shaq. uh they’re individual to themselves and comparing them to other people is fun and it’s for daytime TV, but it’s it’s not reality. These guys are all very special for fans to watch. Him being, you know, one of those guys that stands out, you know, historically. Was there anything injury related bothering him when he left earlier in the first or was that just uh I don’t know. I didn’t know if he, you know, had pain in his stomach or I mean, obviously, I didn’t ask him. It’s a personal question. Uh but he he did have some pain you know and it was good that he came back obviously. But you feel better after tonight’s victory about the upcoming uh games and especially after the loss at home and is there something the reason some people are connecting we’re losing at home. Is there is it just a coincidence that it happens at home? I don’t know. I mean I I could come up with excuses. Uh the schedule has been crazy. Uh like I said I feel like it’s just a pit stop at home right now. Uh there’s no consistency to it. You know, I I think when we go home, I I know people always talk about how we play in altitude, but we’re not ever in altitude. We go home and we play for we play one game and leave. So, you know, we’re under the same duress as the road team. Uh that being said, uh you got to play better at home, bottom line. And we have not defended at home. We’ve scored the ball extremely well, no matter what gym you put us in this year. It’s an historic start to the season offensively. Uh so, yeah, I don’t know. I don’t know what it is. We’ve talked about it. I’ll try to change routines up for the team. And that’s all you can do is try to find some rhythm that that that works, you know, with the guys. And as a coach, that’s my job is to find the best rhythm possible for these guys to win. Uh need to ask you, Nicole has been hellbent on trying to get that continuation call. Yeah. What do you see on those? Have you kind of had any conversations with refs the game on on the way that gets officiated? I just don’t understand. And I guess uh there’s certain guys in the league that kept they kick their foot when they shoot and they do it every time and so they’re allowed to do that and they don’t call it an offensive foul or they say that someone went through their body because that’s their natural shooting motion. Um if he takes the ball through his natural shooting motion, you know, up to the top of his pocket, I don’t I guess I’m just looking for an answer that’s that makes sense with the same comparisons to all the other players in the league. There’s definitely times, I agree, where he thinks he did, but I don’t know where he starts with the ball if it makes sense. But if the ball starts and goes straight up to his pocket, he doesn’t divert his path. He shoots the ball the way he shoots the ball. Um, you know, it’s a talking point. Obviously, the officials are they’re great at communicating throughout the game. They give you their opinions. Um, but yeah, you know, Nicole, he’s always trying to learn the next thing in this game. Um, eventually maybe he’ll get that call. Yep. Thanks, Jamal. Do you take a little bit extra pride getting a 50 piece only having five free throw attempts and the efficient way you got it? I mean that’s been my whole career. It’s not nothing new. How slow was the game out there for you today? It was good. It was really good. Um everything was smooth. One second. My my guys over here they they owe me uh they owe me some words. So, you know, I got everybody here. Uh what’s up, brother? Congratulations fam. What are you doing? Outstanding game. What is going on? Do mans have something to say? Holy smokes. No, that’s how you’re feeling, bro. It’s crazy. Hey, I I’ll be I’ll be the first to say it. Yo, Jamal, you’re the best, brother. Yeah, Jamal. Best to ever do it. Best to ever do it. You already know. You’re the best. And And barely any free throws. I’m not going to lie. You start shooting the free throw, you scoring seven yards, bro. I’m waiting for all mans. You did a great job now. Thanks. That’s all I needed. That’s all I needed. Uh what do they owe you for? Uh we had this thing in the summer that we’re doing. Um and I I want it all, you know. So, um I’m just messing. Want it all like picked up. No, we just we just like they just they just owe me. They just owe me. Let’s just say that. How have you guys taken a really good offense and made it even better? By playing defense. Elaborate for me. The defense feels the offense. Um, you know, when we’re in the half court, we execute well, we share the ball, we’re unselfish. Uh, we cut, we move, make shots, guys come in the game ready to play. Um, I think the difference with us is when we play defense, we can add to that. And, uh, and on top of that, stop the other team from scoring. So, it’s a double-edged sword and and once we figure that out, we’ll be really good. When you feel like some extra confidence tonight, the ball’s going to go in every time you throw it in. Yes. Can you describe like the feeling of being in that? I do you reach a point where you’re not really even thinking necessarily about the spots you’re getting to? Does it is it instinct? Is it thought? Like what what if anything goes through your mind when you reach a certain point? Keep shooting. You’re doing so so long. There’s nothing to overthink. We’re just playing, having fun, and having fun. Playing, having fun. There’s nothing overthink. It’s opposite. I’m not thinking about anything. You know what I’m saying? What made you want to uh go back to the blue arrow? it. You’ve teased it a bunch, but you haven’t actually fired it, I feel like, for a really long time. Uh, just little kid wanted it, so I gave it to him. Little kid did. Yeah. Oh. Were they asking for it throughout the game or was that a sign or something? Don’t overthink it, bro. [Music] Trying to get the answers out. I don’t There’s not much. I just felt like doing it. Can I do that? Yeah, of course. What was your video like your first coach? just saw this week some video when you were practicing looked like at home like several years ago. Was it like at home did you make that’s where you kind of got the inspiration for basketball and was it with your dad you practice kind of back then on the court in kitchen or Mhm. Yeah. My um my dad taught me everything I know basketball and off the court. Um so I know he was happy about tonight. But did you think then you’re going to be where you are today? Was we’re always hoping or Oh yeah. How was that road? For sure. I mean, it was it was a grind. It was it is what it is. We all, you know, we expected it to to be hard, you know, especially coming from Canada and being a foreigner, but um I expected to be here doing this and I I’ve always had confidence, you know, in myself. So, I know you probably don’t want to think about it too much, but I you are kind of building a good all-star case. Do you do you have a case to make for yourself at all with the way that you’ve started this year? I I just go play basketball. So, I mean, that’s up to you guys to like it or not. You know what I’m saying? How close were you to not playing tonight? Uh, I felt pretty good, honestly. You know, it’s we did a lot of treatment going into the game and uh today felt good. Felt good. Maybe a little sore at the end of the first quarter, but you know, it was it wasn’t nothing I could handle. Were you worried at all coming out of the last game that it might be something that would keep you out for a little bit? No. Okay. Do you have fun uh watching when when Jamal gets on a heater like that? I mean, definitely. He How many trees he got? I think 10. Yeah. So, it’s really nice to see the ball going again. He was um he was uh making some really good moves. So, it was it was a fun to watch for sure. Is there a most impressive like like subtlety to his game that that kind of wows you? like a way that he gets to a shot or or anything that like I mean to be honest I I play with him and I watch him for such a long time. I don’t know does he anything that impress me anymore but let’s say when he get going and when he made like two threes in the road and like you can feel his confidence yeah you uh you haven’t had a teammate at all before. Is this the year for uh for you to have one? I don’t know. Maybe. Who knows? I mean, it’s not on us to so we cannot control that. You’re so often praised for your efficiency and the way you score, but the way he efficiently scored. Yeah, he was he was really good. He he he scored he was he had amazing energy. He was um aggressive. The way how he getting into the shots and shoot the ball, he was um really impressive tonight. You guys are in the twoman game and neither one of you is playing in that in that way. Does the game feel slow when you’re out there? How are you reading it? I don’t know. Like sometimes, like I said, sometimes we can score easy, sometimes it like is struggle. It depends what the coverage is, but whatever it is, but whatever defense, defense do, I would say that most nights we find a solution and um I don’t know. I don’t know if it does slow down, but we were in so many in those type of situations. So, we know what to do. Let’s say like that. What’s been different about this team on the road? You guys have won eight straight franchise record. Yeah. I mean, I don’t know. Uh I think we just find a way find a way to to play I think defense in the second quarter was really good. Third quarter was really good. We we I think we just find a way to to get in the rhythm, control the game and don’t let go. No. October, November. You’ve been trying to get that continuation call for a long time. they do not give it to you. Um, what are you seeing on on those? What are you trying to kind of get across about what should be a foul? Uhhuh. No. Um, I think the they call a fault because I’m in my shooting motion. If I didn’t if I’m not in my shooting motion, they will not call a foul. So, the reason why it’s a foul is because I’m shooting the I’m in a shooting motion and then they say it’s not a shooting motion. So, it’s just weird to me. Have I know that you’re like trying not to complain to them anymore, but have you been able to like have any sort of dialogue about about why they’re not giving you that call? I I know. I mean, I cannot change the call, so yeah. In what ways has the offense gotten even better this season? Uh I think like uh and different night different guys like you know Spencer had really two good nights. Uh Cam Cam had a couple nights good. Good Jamal me you know every every night is um even with the guys out I think 10 he has he has a seven threes last not seven couple he had like 20 points is it last night or the the night before. So I think like always there is somebody to step up and um to give us the energy that we need.
