Todd Bowles & Baker Mayfield Look Ahead to Saints | Press Conference Live Stream

afternoon. Todd, on Monday, you were uh discussing lack of tackling in the second half. Is that part in due or was that due in part to possibly fatigue? It was a lack of tackling. We got to wrap up. I mean, it’s not fatigue. We just got to wrap up and finish the plays. It happens, but it can’t happen like that. Was a walk through today, but you got in and like back to see them out there. And how how much did they do out there? That was a walk through, so they didn’t do too much. We’ll be interested to see him tomorrow when we’re running. For how Mike’s doing, we haven’t seen him. We don’t know. Obviously, he’s got himself ready for this, but how close is he physically doing? Physically, he’s fine. He’s been running and everything. I can’t tell you he’s hit anybody, so we got to see him in a football atmosphere, running routes, pattern-wise, getting that getting acclimated to that. So, it’ll be good to see tomorrow. You got any sense of mixed feelings, uh, Todd, towards Canales and, uh, the job he’s doing in Charlotte? U, good buddy of yours, but also a rival team in your division? Very good friend. I’m I’m very happy for him, you know. I’m very happy for him. He’s done a great job since he’s been there and he’s turned the team around. He’s come a long way. I don’t want them to beat us once we play him, but obviously I’m happy for him. You look at that first Saints game. Um, one of the better games your defense has played open to three points, some turnovers. What do you think the key is? The personnel has changed a little bit on both teams, but what do you think the key is to to finding a similar result on Sunday? Anytime we play them, it’s always who wins the turnover battle. you know, every time, you know, the records are out the window. They play hard, we play hard, we both know each other pretty well. Whoever wins the turnover battle wins the game. Each kind of you get back, obviously you get back to being yourselves, but with Mike, since the passing game’s always kind of run through him, how does that open up things offensively for the rest of your offense? Well, it forced us to do other things and see how other things work. So, if we can do that and acclimate Mike back into the things he does, it only helps us going forward. to see Jaylen just recover from such a scary injury these last couple months. What’s that been like just watching him go through the recovery process? I mean, it was great to see him get cleared. You can see the smile back on his face and him moving around a lot better and him looking great. You can tell he got his weight back up. He’s been running quite a bit. So, just to see him back out there, I’m happy for him. You have some history with Brian Hartline, just named the USF coach. What do you think about that move and how excited are you for him? He’s a great coach. He’s a hell of a coach. He was a coach when he was a receiver. Didn’t even know it. And you know, he’s very smart, very intelligent. I’m sure he’s going to keep that program going. How do you feel about the position uh the team’s in, Todd, in terms of uh controlling your own destiny, getting guys back healthy uh going into the final month of the year? I mean, could you ask for much more than that? You want to control your own destiny. You don’t want to sit and look at scores every Sunday. If you can control your own destiny and get guys back in the process and acclimate them the right way and they can help contribute, that’s all you can ask for. You mentioned Clash might be someone who else could come back from AR. Is is there a timet where you think um he might be able to open that 21day window practice window for him? Not until they tell me now. The Bucks face off against Spencer R to start last game there. After seeing some film on him and how he’s played this explorer than I thought, plays with a lot of confidence, has a very quick release, very accurate. He’s a hell of a competitor. How do you get, you’ve been in the position that the Saints are in before? How do you get your team up to play when they pretty much have nothing to play for? And maybe You guys had everything to play for and that motivates them. But how do you get your team ready to keep going later in the season as as you realize, hey, we’re eliminated, we’re out of it. Everybody in this league plays for pride. There’s nobody that’s just going to give you any ball games. Everybody has their name on their back and the name on the front and you play for that. They play for it. We play for it. Everybody in the league plays for it. Anything else? Thanks. How we doing? Each week it’s kind of been, you know, guy come back here and there, but you see 13, of course, Jaylen, what he’s been through. Just talk to to the possibility maybe Mike sooner than Jaylen even what that would do to everybody. Yeah. Um, obviously, you know, we talked about it. uh to on a lot of extension, but I mean Mike just attracts so much attention. Um obviously his playmaking ability is is great to have. You know, obviously I can trust him, know where he’s going to be. Um but he just attracts so much attention. It really affects how a defense is going to play you, how a coordinator is going to call it. So um yeah, obviously we’ll see how they progress continually. Um but yeah, getting him and Jac and you know, for JK, it’s obviously been a long time coming going back to training camp and in a preseason game. So, um, he’s worked his tail off to get to this point. So, hopefully he he keeps heading in the right direction, but it’ll, uh, it’ll keep getting better for us, you know, but like I said last week, uh, we have what we need to win right now. Those pieces will be bonuses for us, but we need to execute with what we have right now. Have you felt that though, like in the red zone in particular, to not have Chris, not have Mike throughout throughout the year points? Yeah. Uh, especially Mike, you know, there’s whether it’s the run plays where they load the box up and you have a one-on-one with him, you know, time and time again, we’ve we’ve thrown it to him. So things like that and then and Chris just understanding zones down there, knowing how to beat leverage. So yeah, you feel it. Could you tell last week uh Baker early that Chris had his had his jump back? Yeah. Um I I think even the practice leading up to it, he looked better than he did uh earlier in the season. Um he just looked more confident, I’ll say that. And just looked more explosive. So for him uh yeah, just translated and it was good to see him back out there. that early catch down the right sideline which um I think it was a third down catch and they broke a couple of tackles and ended up going 25 yards. Yeah, looked still looked explosive. Uh contact balance something that Chris is never easy guy to bring down. He’s got great balance. He’s strong. Um and then yeah, just a good play overall on that one that that he made and TZ got a block to truly make it explosive. You play New Orleans in these division games, you know, they don’t on paper have much to play for, but it’s the NFL. Everybody’s out there. This is their careers. But in the first game, what did you notice about their defense? They still have a lot of, you know, guys that played a lot of football and it didn’t come easy for you guys as I recall at the beginning. No. And against them, it really never does. Um, they we don’t like them, they don’t like us. They play hard. Uh, you can see it on the tape based on the the other games that they’ve played uh since we’ve played them last, and it’s it shows. So, uh, we know what to expect. Record doesn’t indicate how physical this matchup’s going to be. what what a tough matchup it is. So, um they know us, we know them well. So, it’s one of those who can execute better and be the more physical team. This will be the first opponent you guys play for a second time this year. Looking at Brandon Staley’s defense on the film, is there any way maybe that they’ve evolved since they last played you guys or are you kind of expecting a similar thing? Um some minor changes here and there, but uh they still do what they do and do it well. So, it’s uh I’d say the pass rush is getting home a little bit more. for the trust in Deario in coverage, letting some of the other backers blitz. I mean, he’s still he’s still a matchup nightmare when he he lines up in the line of scrimmage. So, got to be aware with where he’s at. Um, but yeah, I think Granderson and Chase Young are also playing really well on the edges. How how are you feeling physically in the shoulder? And will you be able to get more work this week? Um, I maybe some of the throws weren’t what you wanted. How how has that affected your your accuracy recently? And do you feel it getting better? Um, yeah. I mean, it’s getting better. I didn’t take any direct hits um like I mentioned to you guys, which is great. Um still one of those things it’s going to take time. So hopefully I can put two of those in a row together. Um and for the practice reps, we’ll see how it progresses. Um you know, take as many reps as I can possibly get, but if not, then just do the mental preparation like I did last week. Been hit with injuries and adversity week after week after week. at at this point of the season. What do you think best describes the offense’s identity and what are you kind of most proud of throughout you know the ups and downs of the season so far? Uh it’s I mean it’s been a resilient group. Um no matter who’s in there, we’ve asked a lot of everybody uh to step up and do their job at a high level. Um you know I think it a ton of people need to get credit for that. I mean Grizz having to adjust the play calls for for people who are in there. Uh the position coaches for getting everybody that’s stepping up and getting in there ready to play. Um, yeah, it’s just it’s it’s a resilient group and that goes for the whole the players, the staff, um, training room, everybody that’s involved in that. So, it’s u it takes everybody. I know you’re fond of Dave Canalis Baker, but uh, is he pissing you off with the job he’s doing in in Charlotte right now? No, we got the Saints this week. Dave can do what he wants, but you’re playing him twice. Yeah, not yet. Play the Saints this week. Anything else? I guess the nominee nominee for walking man of the year. I know you do so much off the field in half of four, but to be recognized by your teammates, what is that that whole outside part of your career mean? Yeah. Um I mean it’s it’s truly an honor. There’s going to be more that comes out on that here pretty soon. But um yeah, it’s anytime you can get recognized for that, it just uh it’s a unbelievable honor, you know, based on your peers and everybody that that sees that. But it’s uh we have an unbelievable platform. uh something that we hold dearly to our hearts is giving back and using that platform for good. And so it’s this is our home now and being able to give back to Hillsboro County and in the greater area. So it’s um it’s awesome. Thanks guys.

  1. I hope Mike signs for another year or two. Feel like he wont want to go out with this type of season. Unless we go super far in playoffs or win superbowl
