How Joey Wiemer can help shape Giants outfield | Giants Talk | NBCSBA

Hey, what’s up Giants fans? Welcome to another episode of Giants Talk. I’m Cole Kyper here with Giants insider Alex Pavlovich. We’ve got arbitration discussion already trades and much more. The off season is here and stuff is happening in the world of the Giants. Before we get started, Giants talk is presented by Mancini Sleepworld. Mancini Sleepworld’s Black Friday sale is on with savings of up to $1,200 on top mattress brands. Plus, for the first time ever, they’re having a 14 days of deals starting on November 14th. Visit your local Mancini Sleepworld or visit sleepworld.com. All right, Alex, the most exciting part of the year is here. We’re talking arbitration. You sound like you need more sleep. Like, I’ve been battling a a head cold. It’s probably like sounds worse for our podcast listeners than anyone else in my life, but I’ve been fighting this off for like two weeks now, man. Got to get back on that, man. I’ll I’ll do I’ll talk long on every Thank you. You’re doing me solid. Yeah, we go from rule five to arbitration, which is this time of year, and generally sexy stuff that fans love. I was gonna say it generally is more interesting like you think about the last few years we had likeky and Rogers and um Dval and you can go back to like something we joke about a lot like the Kevin Pawar non-tender and how crazy that was and like this was uh Julie Vic Casey and Andrew Kzner and JT Brewbaker and it was not at all how I saw it going down. I thought I if you had told me they would do one of three, I would have said yes. That is my prediction. I would have thought it would be Joey Buacy. Yes, we saw him quite often last year. Thought he was pretty good. He was reliable. He was solid. Um wasn’t, you know, blowing the door off anyone, but definitely someone I expected to see in the bullpin in 2026. He is left-handed most crucially, which is when you’re left-handed and you get outs, you always have a job. Uh, so a bit of a surprise like Brewbaker, we saw him at the end of the year. I think um I don’t know that we have a evaluation one way or another. It was a small sample for him, but they feel like he he can contribute more to next year. He was, you know, cheaper as well. Um, and I think maybe they feel better about their left-handed depth than we felt during the season. You look at it and they do have three left-handed relievers currently on their 40man and Eric Miller, Matt Gage, and um Sam Martin, who they just got from the Reds, but I don’t Yeah, I don’t I was a little surprised. Luke Casey was effective last year and um is a veteran, has has experience doing that. I mean, you know, a couple of these guys, this group doesn’t have as much experience. And uh I I think the other thing I’ I’m always I think is worth mentioning every time we have these pitching conversations is that Landon RP and Eric Miller both had elbow scares last year and both are confident they’ll be fine. And Eric told me at the end of the year if they had made the playoffs, he thinks he would have been able to come back, but it’s an elbow scare. So, it’s, you know, you never know what’s going to happen. So you you want an extra layer of depth here, I think, from the left side, but not a huge deal. But uh yeah, just a bit of a surprise, I think, the way it went down. Yeah. Yeah. I have to imagine this means they have something in mind for the left-handed side, like there’s someone they’re already looking at. Um but I I don’t really see any other explanation for why this happened. Well, I I think there’s probably going to be like three more. Yeah, that’s fair. Types in spring training, like which is totally fine and the way they should go. I’m more more curious and like it’s the holidays so I’m not going to call anybody to ask this question but like if you’re going to choose one of them I guess I was surprised it was Brewbaker instead of Bukasey but um long off season these are non-g guaranteed to an extent and uh we’ll see where this goes. All right. What about backup catcher position as Andrew Kazer was DFAD? Um, not obviously an important place on the uh on the field with Joey Bart there, but backup roles not as crucial, but we’ve been asked about this a lot because of all the back and forths of who’s going to catch last season and um names of guys who barely even were on the team. Backup catcher is interesting because you don’t want to like spend too much on backup catcher, but then a Patrick Bailey goes down for a couple weeks, you’re like and you need it so bad. Oh, this is And then you always kind of look up and go, there’s not a whole lot. I don’t think anyone’s ever been happy with their catching depth chart in spring training. Like there’s always six dudes there and you’re like, okay. Like it’s once you get to like three, you’re like not thrilled. Um yeah, right. You know, Kinszer was the guy last year for most of the year in the second half. He he was the guy behind Bailey. I Rodriguez, I don’t think you want to go into next season with him being him being the guy. I I think it’s like you can I just if he’s your number two, that’s a little risky given that he doesn’t have that much catching experience. Yeah. And you’re again like it’s Patrick Bailey has been really reliable um from a health perspective, but you’re like one spring foul tip away from having a guy who’s never been in the big leagues being your opening day catcher. So I I think they will add somebody an Andrew Kendzer type. Um you know, this happens every year. Steven Vote type, Kirk Casawi type. U they’ll add somebody. Yeah, they’ll add someone to that mix. maybe a couple guys to that mix, but it is that’s going to be a minor minor part of their off seasonason. Yeah. Elsewhere in the Giants moves, they made a trade. Was this with Gabe Kappler? I mean, tech I saw some people say this. Was this the first Kappar Posie trade? And you either have to say it’s a Posie Peter Bendix trade who’s Gab’s boss or a Gabe um Zack Manassian trade. I’m gonna call it, even if it’s inaccurate, I will be calling it a Posie Kappler trade because that is so fun. Well, then it’s very appropriate it included cast considerations. Yes, it is. Yeah, it Joey Wymer uh somebody I think we’ve seen a little bit of like he’s it seems like Milwaukee has five of these guys every year. Yeah. That you just see them and they’re all of a sudden it’s like, oh, it’s really annoying to play that team and who’s where’ that guy come from and why is he Mostly I think it’s like why is he robbing a double in the gap or why is he you could go through their roster and just list all these guys and be like they they constantly have these guys but he I was actually I didn’t even he was one of these guys where I’m like oh a couple years ago you you see him flash a little bit. I hadn’t even really realized where he ended up because he’s bounced around. Um he hits 13 home runs in 2023. Plays pretty good defense. the next year gets traded to the Reds for Frankie Montas along with our old friend Jacob Junice. Oh, because he gets traded to the Royals with Jonathan India for Brady Singer. So, he’s been like thrown into some big deals. Um, and then coined by the Marlins. Yes. Coined by Gabe Kappler’s Marwins. He hasn’t played much in the big leagues the last couple years since those 13 homers. I think for me what, you know, what stands out is is just the defense. And this is a a clear a clear trend now. You can go back to Drew Gilbert at the deadline and Justin Dean a couple weeks ago and now this guy like it’s it’s good outfield defenders which is that’s going to be weird. Like that’s we’re not used to that. So it’s Yeah, it’s like Grant McCrae is a very good defender but we’re not used to the depth chart I think being this good defensively and Yeah. having multiple options when it’s time to do that defensive switch late in the game or just more like, you know, we’ll see where some of these guys end up and who gets sent to Triple A and who gets outrighted maybe and things like that, but just having better defenders in AAA as well is going to be helpful, but it is like a very clear and one thing I’ve I don’t know that we’ve talked about here, but we talk so much about pitching and all the other like little needs. Every single time Buster gets asked, like at the GM meetings, a couple national people come over and just do their, “Hey, going to talk to everybody. What what’s your needs?” Like, it’s always pitching, but he always throws outfield defense specifically. Not like, “I need an outfielder. I need a right fielder.” He says, “Outfield defense specifically.” So, it was the worst outfield defense in the majors last year, which is um I’ll throw back to August. It’s unacceptable for this group. And there’s some guys who are not very good defenders, but like Junk Kui should be better in center. Elliot Ramos could be way better in left field. Um he’d say I’ve had that conversation with him. Like he was very disappointed with the way his season went defensively and and is working on it and is hopeful that he’s a plus defender next year. Um, but I I think that’s going to be one really easy thing to pinpoint moving forward is like it’s been years of talking about getting better defensively in the outfield and this is like pretty targeted now with getting getting some guys who are, you know, Wymer doesn’t have a whole lot of big league experience, but what he does have is you look at like outs. He’s been an above average center fielder in the big leagues. So that’s a very good outfielder. That’s kind of what I was going to follow up with is he seems like he’s a he’s a very good outfielder. Awesome. The Giants need that kind of defensive boost, but how does he fit in overall? Like like are the Giants looking for daytoday starter everyday outfielders with defense or are they looking for guys who can kind of slot in for the improvement? Um or are you going to tell me that these things have a way of figuring themselves out? No, this time I won’t. First of all, I looked um on this baseball reference page anyway and it’s showy Weame. So Wemmer pronounce correct way. It’s early in the morning. We’re learning. Uh middle school must have been tough. Yeah. Well, when you’re a good baseball player, probably miss That’s true. It does. It goes goes. Uh, no, I won’t do I I think um, you know, we’ll see other moves before spring training, but I I think what you’re seeing is you’re this is almost a Farhanization of this 40man here where I think you are similar to Farhan coming in and being like I, you know, sometimes you can’t necessarily go to the top of the depth chart. You can you can back fill though and you can you know you look at the outfield depth chart right now and and what they have and they have 10 guys 10 of their 40 are outfielders which is insane unless it’s like an incredible group. This is not that. But I mean Justin Dean and Carnacion, Gilbert, Jung Hului, Luciano, Matoss, McCrae, Mecca, Ramos, and now Wemer. Like, there’s going to be some changes here. And it’s something we’ve been talking about for a few weeks. And they’ve gotten through these roster deadlines without having to make changes, but they’re not coming to camp with these 10 guys on their 40. Like, it’s this is an easy place to look when they need when they need spots, you know, when they sign guys. Um, I think this is an easy place to look if you talk about like minor trades, like who gets thrown in and then yeah, it’s just not a This is an interesting group where it seems like they’re they’re replacing their depth with new depth and new depth guys who are a different fits. And yeah, I also think just to go back to the previous regime like you are almost setting up a situation where you can platoon in right field if you want to, right? You know, Wemmer’s been good against lefties. We’ll see where Drew Gilbert ends up in his career and what he ends up doing. But you are setting up a situation where you have more pieces and maybe that’s I know that’s not going to be a sexy offseason move for anybody, but if that’s where they end up in right field, like it maybe platoon a little bit better and just play good defense out there. Yeah. Yeah. I cannot wait for all the articles talking about how the Giants will now platooning next year according to Giants Talk podcast. Well, they’re not platooning in like seven spots. So, the Giants will now be platooning because Gabe Kappler forced Gabe was involved. Gabe was involved. They should be platooning at a couple spots. Like, it’s I’ve always been adamantly pro platoon because it’s, you know, a guy like this who has a um seven something OPS against like a 200 point difference in his his uh his stats in his career against lefties and righties. I’m going to pull it up just so we can specifically. Yeah. 559 against righties in his career ops. Uh hits 178 against righties, 779 OPS against lefties. He’s a good defender. He is meant to have a platoon partner in the big leagues. And he can be a productive big leager if he has a platoon partner and play good defense. So I whether it’s second base or whether it’s right field like they’re not going to have it at first, short, third, left, center, catcher, like this is a roster that I think could very easily have a couple spots here or one spot where they just platoon and try to get the best out of that position every day. Okay, so let’s zoom out then. Let’s take a big zoom out of Joey We look at the Giants outfield as a whole. Um, what is what do you anticipate this shakes out to be? Um, like if he’s platooning, what’s the other half of that platoon? Who is who is he turning his head and seeing in center and left? Well, he’ll he’ll see Jungle Lee. Um, right. Check it off. We think he’ll see Elliot Ramos. Um, you know, this does also open you up a little bit if you want to try to swing a big trade. Yeah, that’s your centerpiece. There’s not a lot of guys who can be a centerpiece for a trade. Like it’s we always talk about like if you call this team about X, they would say, “Okay, Bryce Eldridge.” Exactly. Which is an odd starter, but maybe the next conversation with some of these teams is Elliot Ramos. This is an extra layer of depth there. I think currently you have Ramosson left, you have Lee in center, you have multiple guys out of this group of 10 who are not going to be there in spring training um or are not going to be there at the end of camp. And so you have these other guys fighting for fighting for jobs and and bench jobs. And the other key here is their bench is going to be much better defensively. You’ve also added a couple guys who can run which is hey San Francisco Giants much needed. Who are these guys? How about that? So yeah, this is an easy place where we have this conversation every offseason in part because like five years in a row Farhan would sit down at the end of the year and say we need to get more athletic. Um we need to be faster, we need to be better defensively and Buster has said that as well. And you look at this current roster and again like where are you gonna find those improvements? It’s not not gonna be your backup catcher. So, um, this is the one spot, the outfield, where I think they can try to inject some athleticism. And, you know, these aren’t big names, but I they’ve done a nice job for free in in doing that for the last three weeks. And maybe they find a better fit um over free agency or in the trade market. But at least there’s like some guys who can run. I I just am like I’m so over the the bad defense and so I’m like when I look at a guy and I’m like, “Oh, he can he can defend.” And I can remember seeing that guy a little bit. I’ve seen Justin Dean. I’ve seen him play defense. Like I think that’s a real positive. Yeah. I mean, you we have here that uh uh Joey We had three outs above average last year in right field. Just out of morbid curiosity, I looked up the Giants stats last year. We’ve got Elliot Ramos negative9, Jung Julie negative5, Mike Strronky negative3. Dude would have led the team and that was that was in like 27 games. Yeah, exactly. Um, no, I mean Justin Dean’s a very good defender. I I thought Drew Gilbert was outstanding when we saw him in in center field. So they’re one setting themselves up to be better defensively and two they’re setting themselves up if this is the way it goes and this is your depth chart like maybe you have a conversation at some point during the season of uh hey would your center fielder be better in right field and I really think that’s an interesting discussion that should be had. I I don’t know that it’s a 2026 discussion yet, but you kind of look at all these guys and go, you have some you have a depth chart now. Even Grant McCrae would qualify of guys who can be good in center field. And one thing that stood out watching the postseason, but especially just watching the regular season, is how many teams have a center fielder that can’t hit but just goes and gets it? Every ball is is caught. and how valuable that is. And like we’ve seen that for years, just not in San Francisco. And I wonder when they’re going to make that adjustment and go like, you know what, your center fielder has to be really good defensively. And and uh if Lee’s not going to get there, like he’d be an above average right fielder probably. Yeah. But I don’t I’ve asked that question. I don’t think it’s a spring question. I don’t think it’s a opening day question um yet. I don’t think they’re there, but again, like you have a new manager who can come in and say, “This is what I want to do.” Yeah, it’s kind of the perfect time. Um, I want to put a cap on this outfield discussion with a mailbag question from listener Hayden. Um, you kind of touched on this a little bit earlier, but I think it’s interesting to circle back to. Hayden says, “A thought I’d like to ponder is whether all of the outfield additions would make Elliot Ramos expendable.” Will it? I I don’t think it will. It makes it easier. Yeah. If this is where you go and I think expendable is a harsh word, I think for what it means. I don’t think he’s expendable. And I I really think like he stands out to me as like the guy who can most benefit from Tony Vitello in a new staff. I one thing I like about Elliot is I think Elliot wants to be great and he wants to get better. And I don’t think they put him in the right position last year. And I don’t think they they did a great job of helping him last year get through what he was going through. And I don’t think there was a lot of accountability um in terms of, you know, we talked about this during the year, like benching probably doesn’t do much, but could he have used a couple days off at some point just to clear his head and be like, let’s get a fresh start in left field? um you know, not like an in-game you let a ball get over your head and now we’re going to punish you, but like couple days just to reset. Um or could he have just used someone with a better a better way to help him get better in left field? And I think that’s going to be crucial. And you look at what he did two years ago, like he was an all-star. He was their best player for long stretches of the season two years ago. That for me is like a where is there upside on this roster. I think there’s other guys who I go I don’t know if he’s going to match that season that he had last year. Elliot should have a way better season next year. Like he’s entering his prime. He’s physically there. He’s he wants to be great. Um he wants to put the work in. So he stands out as somebody that I I think the new staff should look at and go like we can get a lot more out of this guy. Yeah. Um, by the same token, like, yeah, there’s not a whole lot of guys if you’re, this is not, this is not like a trade idea, but it, let’s say you call Minnesota and say, “We want one of your starters.” Like, there’s there’s not a whole lot of guys where you can comfortably start a conversation. Yeah. Say like, I don’t want to name names, but there’s not a lot of guys at Triple A where you just got, what do you think of that guy? Like, no, they’re going to go to Bryce Eldridge. They’re going to go to Carson Wizen Hunt. Maybe they’re going to go to to uh Elliot Ramos. Um so it gives you more depth. I I think I would like to see what he can do with the full year of just, you know, the other thing is I think everything came at him pretty quickly last year where all of a sudden he’s like, “Oh, I’m not very good on left field.” Like, so I think he needs an offseason to reset and let’s see what he looks like. Yeah. Yeah. All right. With that, let’s take a look around the league, what’s happening with the other MLB teams before getting to some mailbag questions from listeners. Uh, up first, the Dodgers brass are heading to the NBA. Andrew Friedman and Farhan Zidy are now consulting with the Los Angeles Lakers. That was a headline. I think everybody was I had a few people send this to me and they’re like, “What is going on here?” I actually wasn’t at all shocked because one, this is what Farhan’s been doing since he went back to LA. He’s been consulting on other sports that are owned by that ownership group. Um, and two, he loves basketball and it’s the one story about him that I never wrote that I was sad that I never wrote was like he was that like his other, you know, everyone did the fantasy football angle, but I think he’s very close to some people in the NBA world. Um, and I started working on it and talked to someone from another team in the NBA and then it all it was about the time where I’m like I don’t know that anyone wants to read. I can already tell what the comments are going to be in this long story about this. So, but I’m not I’m not surprised by this, but it is an interesting interesting headline. Yeah, coming straight off the uh the Cleveland Browns MLB discussion we had an episode or two ago, we’re getting a lot of entanglement with other sports and um in front office and management. Yeah. I wonder if in five years we’re going to look back and be like this was all kind of dumb like or we’ll be the other way and it’ll be like wow uh Giants manager Steve Kerr has been a godsend. Yeah, it it seems like there’s I don’t know. It seems like there’s not that much you can you can help with. No, baseball seems so with because of the lack of like I don’t know man-to-man adjustments that every other sport has, baseball seems so wildly different and so better suited for staticians and uh nibbling on the edges than I just think for any sport. Um, it’s, and this is no disrespect to these two guys, like they’re two of the brightest guys in baseball. This is for anything. I think it’s like so presumptuous to think that someone who’s good in baseball is going to have something to offer beyond someone who’s been doing this in basketball for like 20 years. Yeah. So, I don’t know. It seems like a seems like we’re seeing a bit of this right now. At some point, I think we might look back and be like, that never really led to anything. Yeah, it would have been fascinating to be podcasting during the Michael Jordan to the White Socks era, Alex. We would have gotten some real good content out of that. Equipment here would have been horrible. I don’t know. Good for everyone who’s getting a consultant fee, I guess. Yeah. But, uh, doesn’t seem like I think short of like people going to another and I’m sure Tony’s gone to like football practices and Sure. Especially in college. Yeah. and seen some of how and I’m sure he’s talked to basketball coaches and stuff and done some I I don’t know that there’s too much that can carry over for like a front office. Yeah, I don’t think so either. Um elsewhere in Major League Baseball, big trade. Um I don’t know. We can decide on this. Is this a blockbuster trade? But the Rangers and Mets swap Marcus Semian and Brandon NMO um in the odd one for one um mega contract star deal. Now this was an NBA trade like yes this was an NBA trade. Well said. Maybe I take back what I said. Um is this are these guys do we count them as like brief Giants talk subjects? I don’t know that we ever went too deep on either one. I really wanted Marcus Simeon on the Giants. And let me tell you, I talked to Marcus Simeon when I was writing my book and Marcus Simeon wanted to come to San Francisco. Yeah. Um I I guess that contract isn’t aging great, but it’s not. And I think that could be part of the trade. Yeah. Good player. Um good dude. Fascinating trade. I kind of like it. I I I think some people didn’t get it. I’m like, “Okay, I kind of like it for both.” Yeah, it it’s one of those things. It seems like it’s it makes sense for both, but Brandon Nimmo’s been one of those guys who’s been a Met forever, right? That has to be kind of heartbreaking for a fan base. I’m a fan of like I guess it’s I don’t know if this is a true challenge trade, but just like a is not really like doing much for us here. So, yeah, let’s see if we can do something else. Yeah. Is it possible that this is like, hey, we need to open up an outfield spot to get one of the top guys? I think it is. That’s what I immediately assumed was that uh they’re clearing out. They’re taking Simeon on for the infield so they can now start serious discussions with like Kyle Tucker. Yeah. Or Bellinger. Um yeah. No, it’s moving some things around and finding a better, you know, to our previous discussion about Giants trades. Like that could be part of it at some point is like moving some guys around and finding some guys who fill different holes, which in this case is pitching. Yeah. Yeah. All right, that’s all we have going around the league. We have mailbag questions from listeners, though. Before we get to those, Giants talk is presented by Mancini Sleepworld. Mancini Sleepworld’s Black Friday sale is on. We’re talking bedding bundles packed with pillows, sheets, and more. Plus, recliners for less than $300. Don’t sleep on this. Visit your local Mancini Sleepworld or visit sleepworld.com. Okay, Alex. First question in today’s mailbag collection is from Kathy. Kathy says, “Tony V spoke very highly about Hunter Pence. any chance Hunter goes from broadcasting to coaching? Um, before you answer, I will just say, of course, Tony B spoke very h highly of Hunter Pence. He fits the Tony Vital mold better than like any previous giant I can think of. If you had said like, “No, Tony timeraveled and coached Hunter.” Um, it would make perfect sense. My stock answer to this, and you are probably just as sick of it as these things figure themselves out, is that these guys don’t want to coach. And yes, I if you follow Hunter on Instagram, I think he’s very happy with the life he’s living, not um waking up well, he’s probably already wakes up at the crack of dawn, but not doing the extremely intensive preparation and lifestyle needed from a MLB coach, especially one on a young, scrappy, trying to prove themselves coaching squad run by Tony Vital. But you didn’t see where I was going with that. Okay. The difference with Hunter is he lives in San Francisco. He does not have he’s not uprooting anything currently. Um so I if he’s he’s in a better position than most these guys to actually do this and he’s already involved with the Giants and is around quite often. Um but yeah, I think there’s a I think the problem here with a lot of guys and I don’t want to speak for him and I haven’t asked him this question. I think a lot of times it’s like I I could get 90% of the way there, but to your point like yeah, when you have that two weeks in July where you can go to wherever like Yeah. Australia or wherever. We know Hunter travels a lot. All the like I think that’s always a thing for some of these guys. I’ve talked to some of them in the past where they’re like, I could do a lot of that, but I can’t give you eight straight months every single day. never getting a day off, never not going to weddings, not going to So, I don’t want to speak for him. I think he actually might be a candidate down the line to do something like this. I just think in general, most guys don’t want to commit to the every day. That’s why those special assistant to the XYZ roles really look nice. Oh, it’s perfect. Yeah. And as someone who does TV, like I Yeah. The guys who jump in and just do that, that’s Yeah. Do your 40 games or whatever. Yeah. That’s the dream. Uh, Walt says, “Elliot Ramos ranked fifth in hit by pitch and it decimated the third base position over the course of three weeks. What can be done to change the hit by pitch umpire guidelines? Is that something the front office or ownership can discuss with Rob Manfred? I’ like I’d like Buster to call Manfred and yeah, just make like the the guys are getting hit. Hey uh um generally guys who are at the top of that list and Elliot is qualifies are standing very close to the plate. Yes. And are you know it’s just part of it with him. The other thing I will say is this is one of those where you you watch your team every day and go like these guys are getting drilled. This is ridicul this guy. How many how many guys are we going to get hurt? How many how many close calls are we going to have here? when’s someone going to throw at someone to stop this? And then you look at it and you go, the Giants are like I think they’re like 12th. Yeah. Hit by pitches. So it’s like I mean the Giants got hit by 66 pitches which is right around the middle of the pack. Seattle’s up at 89. Minnesota, St. Louis, uh Los Angeles Angels, Mets. So where’s Toronto on that? Oh, are you hitting coach? Where? I was just wondering about uh in the World Series that guy waggling his hand in the middle of the zone to get hit. That guy, they’re at 65. That guy was probably 63 of them. Yeah. U no hit by pitches is always funny to me because it’s one of those where fans get so fired up about it. And this team does not get hit by a lot of pitches. Yeah. Actually are like right in the middle of the pack. I mean, do you remember the Barry Bonds era where he would just lean that elbow in, dink those pitches off? It might as well have been an intentional walk. Yeah. I mean, the all-time for a Giant for me is Brandon Belt, who just it seemed like everyone that hit his hand would break his hand for six weeks and hit a horrible time sometimes, but yes, if the Giants are going to call Rob Manfred to complain about pitch rules, it would have been in I don’t know, 2021. Current Giants don’t have an issue with it. Yes. Yes. But good question, Walt. Um AJ says, “Listening to the rule five part of the show and I have one name for you as a big time success story. Forever giant Dan Ugla Marlins picked him up in the 20 2006 draft and he made the All-Star team that very season all the way to two more All-Star seasons.” Begs the trivia question as to how many rule five game guys went on to make the All-Star team in the very same season they were drafted. A question I don’t have the answer to. I did some research for this guy. One, I think we maybe we skipped over some of there’s been some really good actual rule five picks. Yes. But it’s so rare that it, you know, you don’t look at it that way, but Oduba Herrera was one of the best. He made the All-Star team in his second year. Um, Yokim Sora made it in his second year. And then Josh Hamilton made five straight all-star teams. He was technically a rule five pick. Uh, he didn’t make the all-star team with the team that drafted him in the rule five. So, there have been guys who have been rule five picks who have gone on to be allstars. I could not find anyone. Maybe a listener can do more research. I could not find anyone who made the all-star team in their rule five year. Okay. But I’m sure we’ll have one at some point or have had a random reliever at some point. All right. All right. Uh Jay Shern says, “Do you think the Giants will have any caution signing players with a qualifying offer?” This is a great question. Um, and you know what, like we did uh for the rule five, give give the uh two sentence cliff notes on Qo. I think the qualifying offer this year is 22 million. Okay. Um, three guys took it. It’s basically like a franchise tag almost like coming back on a one-year deal. Um, it’s getting to such a high number. It used to be like 17, 18. like it’s giving such a high number that I feel like it’s going to be automatic for more guys where you go one year 22 million. I’ll take that. Sure. Um it’s it’s a way to help your future market because we’ve seen guys who get the qualifying offer get lesser offers sometimes in free agency and um like Zack Allen’s a guy who got it this year and that’s why this question is important. I don’t know how this is one of those where I don’t know how the front office feels specifically about this year’s class. Um, they have not worried about qualifying offers much the last few years. So, it hasn’t been a a huge deal for them. At the same time, we did a whole thing last week about first round picks and high draft picks and messing those up. And you do give up a draft pick when you sign these guys. So, don’t necessarily want to keep doing that. Um, but I I think I would think for this year’s roster, they’re so all in on this group and, you know, there’s labor unrest after this. So, you have this little window with this team. Um, it’s an older line, not not an old lineup, but bunch of guys who are older and walked into long-term deals that might not look great in like four four or five years. Mhm. I think they are probably not as worried about this as they would be otherwise. Yeah. Just because it’s, you know, if that’s your way to add a add talent to this group, that’s just kind of the way it has to be. Yeah. All right. AJ says, “With the coaching staff shaping up with Tingler, bench, men’s hitting, message, pitching, what are the key roles on the staff still pending?” I’m guessing assistant roles for pitching and hitting, and I guess the first and third base coaches, right? Do we know how many roles they still need to fill? I know the size of a coaching staff isn’t a set number. U where are we right now, Alex? That’s a that is a great question. We’ve kind of been doing these coaching updates on a one episode, one role basis, and it makes it easy to lose track of what the overall picture is. Where are we? We’re at almost Thanksgiving and waiting for the list of uh of coaches. So, um no, I I think uh it is a good question. I I think one of the issues is we don’t know necessarily what you know like Tony’s bringing Frank Anderson with him. We don’t know what his exact title is going to be. Yeah. Um they they wouldn’t tell us at the GM meetings what Jace Tingler’s title is. You assume it’s bench coach. Yeah. Associate manager. Um there’s a lot of title inflation and it’s a way to get people from other teams and so I think when this comes out we might see some different titles but just the traditional way like they need one more pitching coach whether it’s an assistant pitching coach or whether it’s a bullpen coach. Um they probably need one more assistant hitting coach. They kept one of theirs Oscar Bernard and they got one from Toronto. Probably need one more there. Um, and then the base coaches. But I I I think we’re I wouldn’t be surprised if we see them take advantage of what some other teams have done to get some talent on their staffs and especially maybe get some more experience on the staff. And I look at like what Los Angeles has done. They have a field coordinator, a major league field coordinator who is Bob Garren, a former big league manager. Um, just another way to have a different like they have a bench coach but then also Bob Garren right next to Dave Roberts. And then this one I didn’t even that the Dodgers have a development integration coach on their big week staff. Development integration coach which sounds like something out of tech company. Shocked that Gabe did not have a development integration coach but development integration coach. It is a way if there’s a talented young coach somewhere or a talented older coach somewhere um who Tony would like to add to his staff and like doesn’t necessarily have the bench coach role or doesn’t have the hitting coach role available. You know, you can add you can throw something in there. Yeah. And create something for him. Yeah. Yeah. Get real fun with it. I want to see some excite I want to hear next year other podcasts be like, “Did you know the Giants have a vice manager?” You know, I just get some wacky titles in the mix. I want like head of so and so. Oh, yeah. Head of head of uh pitching ZAR. Yeah, pitching. Yeah, let’s let’s get uh let’s get creative here. Everyone says like associate manager and you can do better than that. You can do better than that. Uh Jason says, “I’m sitting here watching the podcast and the trade talk made me think of a maid of a move I made on the franchise mode in MLB the show, which is a video game. Alex, I traded Moss for Miami’s Erito Hernandez. He had a solid season offensively, hitting 266. He’s an outfielder who can catch as well. Not sure if Miami would want to get rid of him, but he could be a sneaky trade for the boys and plug in some depth needs both in the outfield and behind the plate. Alex, before we get into the question, how do you feel about video game trades translating to major league uh options? Well, first of all, I know it’s a video game. What was the video game your dad did? I play that every day. My dad did. We should have him discuss like the uh the oral history of MVP baseball. MVP baseball was great. Yeah, I played that every day in college. Yeah. Um went through 162 kind of sick. Absolutely. It’s it’s crazy. Um not the best way to go back. Those hours could have been spent learning Spanish or something. Yeah. Or like on the beach at the very least. Yeah. Uh, I usually I think if we would say if you said somebody sent a trade offer from MLB the show, it would be like, “Hey, I found a way to get you Scooble.” Yeah, exactly. You put these exact six prospects together, they accept a Scoo trade every time. Not a guy who hit 10 homers last year and was was fine. Uh, he’s fine. He’s Yeah, he’s fine. I think the one thing I would caution here is like when you say someone can catch, I I think they might be done with that. like and especially Buster Posey has so much respect for that position that ah that’s a good point because I did like the Blake Sable kind of like utility knife backup catcher option never but I can imagine that that is like a a record scratch to a a connoisseur of catching like Buster Posey. I mean Hernandez caught like 25 games in the minors. I the Sable thing I in theory I loved it. It never really got off the ground. Yeah. Like it it Yeah. just never worked out. Um, so that would I would caution that. I think he wants a real backup catcher, like a guy who can a guy who can catch. Yeah, that’s fair. That’s fair. And can experience catching, but I do like the creativity here and not just being like, here’s Joe Ryan. Um, here’s an extra outfielder. So, yeah. All right. I don’t This is one of those words like I sure he’d be help. Alex wants to hear your MLB the show trades. If you have any good ones the Giants should make, send them into the podcast. We will uh maybe we’ll do a uh a segment on on these uh these video game trades. If you found a way to get school DM buster right now, you’re not playing easy mode and found a way to get school. All right, one more question for today’s uh mailbag rundown. This is from Greg. Greg says, “Do the Giants successes in their real estate ventures, i.e. Mission Bay, Visa HQ directly affect the spending on baseball players or is that a separate business entirely? That is not discussed often. It’s I I think it is viewed as mostly separate. I think if it were to be like wildly successful, you could maybe make that connection. Mhm. I don’t think the Giants ownership group would want you to make that connection. I think No, I think if those things took off and became wildly successful, it would be let’s spend more on real estate ventures with that success. Not let’s uh get a a left-handed relief pitcher. Yeah, it and you we talked last week about San Diego being up for sale and you look around the ballpark and I know they have their hands in a lot of that and it’s wildly successful like it’s they shut streets down there’s bars are overflowing. I don’t know. This is one of those where it gets really like gray where you go I don’t know who’s like is one is somebody in that ownership group also owns like six of those bars and is just crushing it but also is like yeah but the Padres’s are losing money or whatever. So I think this is where rich people have a good way of doing stuff like that. Yeah. So um yeah there’s I know some stuff about Mission Rock. Uh, it’s not something that’s discussed too often, but I I don’t think that’s something that’s going to like if you walk across the street and see a bunch of lights on in that apartment building, I don’t think you should be like, “Here comes Kyle Tucker.” It is. Yeah. To your point, it’s a it’s a great way to be like, “Hey, let’s buy up more of of um of this part of town.” Yes. And or maybe what I would like to see is let’s go the other way. like it’s um the other side of the street I think is underutilized. Oh, absolutely. Do you remember in the World Series era how much that street was firing with Pete’s, Pedros, Momos all jampacked? Yeah. Now it’s it’s getting pretty bleak over there. It’s very bleak over there. Although I did see um uh Have you been to Trick Dog? Trick. Um, Dog is a fabulous uh cocktail bar and restaurant and they just opened a spin-off little mini location next to the ballpark in this area called Quick Dog. Highly recommend you making a Quick Dog visit. I will add that to my list. I think one of my things with Mission Rock is there’s excellent food there. Yeah, it’s not. It’s just like Yeah. Yeah, I wish it was across the street and this is like laziness a little bit, but but it it is I think it’s a little more separate than they people discuss it as if it’s like a viable option for Giants fans before a game, it is too far. The the whole Mission Rock area, unless even if you’re parking at the back end of that lot, I don’t think many fans are going there and then doubling back to do the extra long trek um across the lot to cross the bridge. I think some Giants people hate us right now. You know what you need is like those Disneyland shuttles where you just hop on, you know that you hop on the back, just slide in. Don’t even a little ferry. It might be a bit much to go across. Yeah, I think it’s a for people who haven’t been in a while, it’s just a little hard to get out there and like and then make it back for or Yeah. It just doesn’t if you’re if you’re coming from the city side, like I don’t think you’re going to go all the way over there. Yeah. But I would love to see them put more into like right across the street from the ballpark. Yeah, it’s that that Yeah, I remember the World Series years. Those were that place was insane. And even like Friday nights sometimes like you you see the spillover out there and it’s like there should be more for these people to do. Yeah. Yeah. I also think that the San Francisco thing I’ve had multiple people this year like other beat writers come in and be like, “What’s open here after 10?” Yeah. And I don’t know, am I just not remembering what life was like before uh Big Rona? Like in 2019, was was it a a whole vibe out there still or had it already started its I think it had started. That Taco Bell does great business. That Taco Bell is had you half of the business at that Taco Bell? Taco Bell crushes. We could use a couple more things in the little Yeah. Um Yeah. I even last time I was there, one of the things that was right across the street. I don’t want to speak for them, but I believe it’s closed. So, yeah. Um, could use more right across the street. Maybe love maybe Tony himself will we’ll bring that back. There we go. You know what? Pause on the managerial duties. What uh what Tennessee style restaurants can we put in here on Third and King? Can we do food trucks or something? Like what was that? Oh, food trucks. Yeah. It just seems like everything’s a little bit too far from the gates of the even the other there’s some good food if you walk like up Second Street. It’s just some of it’s like a a trek. Yeah. And you can’t good luck trying to park for 30 seconds in San Francisco. So all right, this is how we now that’s all we have for mailbag questions today. Um, if you have questions for Giants Talk podcast, you can submit them wherever you find me and Alex on social media. That includes, um, Twitter, Blue Sky, uh, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube comments. Um, yeah, send them our way. We’ll add them to our collection. Find a day this off season to get to them and answer your questions about Giants baseball. Uh, Alex and I are going to skip the Thursday Thanksgiving episode of Giants Talk this week. Give you guys some time to spend time with your family, your friends. Um, Alex, what are you doing for Thanksgiving? Well, family time. I apologize if anyone had planned to disappear from their family for 45 minutes and listen to this podcast on on Thursday, but um, yeah, we’ll, you know, if there’s a if there’s a NMO Simeon trade, we will be back. Yeah, we will emergency podcast as needed. Otherwise, we’ll be back next Monday and then next week’s the week before the winter meetings. So, we’re, you know, to the way you started this podcast of like it’s we’re it’s almost the end of November. Yeah, this off season is marching along despite not even being a full month away from the uh the conclusion of the World Series. It does, you know, I was expecting us to be in the absolute doldrums at this point. Um, and we’re we’re hanging strong here on Giant Talk. We should have some real, you know, MLB. It’s generally like literally right after Thanksgiving that teams are like, “Okay, now it’s go time. Let’s go.” Are you saying Joey We’s not real? Yeah. Do you see his Instagram? No. Oh, he posted a good like good joke about cash considerations. Oh, that’s my guy. He We needed him like four years ago. Yes. Cash considerations jokes. He knows the way to our hearts. Yeah. All right. Thank you guys. See you in a week.

How Joey Wiemer can help shape Giants outfield | NBC Sports Bay Area

  1. Underdogs is the one! Great food, although limited fare. Good prices. I'm there at least once every homestand. Try a salmon burrito bowl. Yummy! 😊 (and no, I don't own any shares, although I wish I did.)

  2. Come on! By June no one will remember Weimer's name…or if they do…will mispronounce it badly. The worst outfield defense in baseball….next to last in stolen bases…and a team batting average in the bottom 5. Watch out Dodgers!🤣🤣

  3. Is JHL not able to perform the grueling schedule of MLB.… Seems like he burns out… are all these outfielders back up in case he does flail? Is this his last chance? What’s the possibility of him getting moved?

  4. 46:19 I'm surprised about the lack of trucks, I think that's one of the very few positive things the A's did in terms of food options in the final years at the Coliseum. I think the Earthquakes did something similar in their first year at Avaya. Not sure if it's just hella red tape that trucks have to deal with in SF to make it a possibility, but that'd be awesome. Thankfully there is also an Ike's nearby. But I do agree with Cole about let's bring some Vols restaurants to Third/King

  5. All of these OF additions leadse to believe the Giants may be planning a bunch of trades. The ownership would be setting a franchise legend up for failure if they believe that they could win going bargain hunting

  6. Crazy thought on platooning. If (big if) a big market team is serious about winning: how about getting players that can field and hit righty and lefty pitchers.

  7. …You must be joking… Gilbert hit .190 Wiemer hit .205… I don't care how good you are defensively if you hit .205. We gave up on Yas cuz he couldn't hit and he hit .225 and he was a good defender AND IT WAS THE RIGHT MOVE, CUZ HE COULDNT HIT. And now the solution is to bring in people who are even worse hitters… THIS IS A TEAM THAT WAS BOTTOM 8 IN ALMOST EVERY MEANINGFUL OFFENSIVE CATEGORY. We can't afford to carry outfielders who can't hit, we already have a catcher, a 2nd baseman and a 3rd baseman WHO CAN'T HIT, WE CAN'T AFFORD TO ADD ANY MORE.

  8. Pleeeease get Duane (& Mike!) to talk about MVP Baseball! I played MVP Baseball 2005 for years and years! Still do sometimes lol. Surprised Cole didn't mention that he and his siblings are on the San Jose Giants in-game! Best soundtrack ever too
