I have seen some people defending the oilers GM at the time Ken Holland saying goalies are a mixed bag and can be difficult to judge.
Wallstedt was the consensus best goalie in the draft by a long shot Cossa was only taken sooner because Yzerman is a wacko and liked Cossa more.
I think we have all learned that despite what your needs might be it’s best to take the best player available in the first round. Oilers didn’t want Wallstedt for two reason the timeline for when he would be making the NHL (neither of their picks are in their system anymore) and “character questions”
So far, the Wild have hit big time with Jesper. Let’s not pretend they haven’t had major flops and misses. In 2005, they could have drafted Carey Price, Anze Kopitar, Marc Staal, or TJ Oshie. Let’s just be happy they were able to get Jesper and that the future looks very bright with him.
