Perez came to the Houston Organization the first time back in 2012 as part of the deal that saw Brandon Lyon, JA Happ and David Carpenter head to Toronto for Francisco Cordero, Ben Francisco, Joe Musgrove, Asher Wojciechowski, David Perez and Lopez. He made it to AAA OKC before being dealt in 2015 along with Nick Tropeano for Hank Conger.

He was on the Angels MLB Roster from 2015-17 before being traded to Atlanta in the Spring of 2018. He was waived by Atlanta in May of that year and Texas claimed him. He then spent 2019-2022 in the minors before making his return to MLB with Oakland for 68 games. He spent last year in the Cubs organization, but did not play in MLB.

Astros likely want him for depth, especially since it looks like Victor Caratini won't be back. Lopez (now 35) will likely compete with Cesar Salazar for the backup position behind Yainier Diaz.

  1. Really wanted caratini back. Still an option, but it feels like we are filling gaps with low cost options. I hope we don’t miss the pitcher we are saving for!

  2. Dana is really scraping together as much cap space as he can for someone. Really curious who they are trying to target for our rotation.

  3. Victor played his way out of the back up role. Or at least played his way into too much money for us at this moment. Which is pretty understandable. He was very valuable but do we really want the amount of money going to our back up catcher that he was going to demand? Clearly not.

The plan is to not need to rely on our back up catcher as much this upcoming season. Its always better to have the option of someone like Victor but we need to allocate that money to a more “important” role. Back up catchers are a dime a dozen.
