On today’s episode, we are going to do our winter meetings preview. This could be a potential very big winner meetings for the Atlanta Braves. Maybe not so much in terms of moves and acquisitions, but for the draft lottery, for the Hall of Fame, the rule five draft, there is a lot to pay attention to as Braves fans at this year’s winner meetings. We’ll get into all that on today’s episode, which is brought to you by FanDuel. If you want to be right in the middle of the action this season, visit fanuel.com and place your NFL live bets all season long. So, the winter meeting starts this weekend, this Sunday. It goes from December 7th through December 10th. This is generally the biggest off season week of the offseason for Major League Baseball. We’ll normally see a lot of moves happen between, you know, really starting this past Monday and then really through the week after winter meetings. Sometimes you don’t always see the big moves happen at winter meetings, but it can lead to big moves happening right after. So, this is the biggest two to three week stretch of the off season. And a lot of that is glamorized at the winter meetings where you’re going to have everybody in one place, a lot of agents there, obviously all the teams, GMs there, a lot of media there. It is it’s the most fun I guess that you can have in a week for Major League Baseball off season, which you know can go long. I mean, stuff can happen in November. Stuff can happen as as far as, you know, January into February. It is a long off season. It’s not all condensed into a few weeks like what I think happens in other sports. I don’t honestly pay as much attention, but this one week at the winter meetings, you got everybody together. There’s usually at least a lot of news, a lot of rumors, and a lot of signings that come out of it. So, it is a fun week for baseball fans. Now, as for Braves fans, it’s not usually all that exciting because AA generally doesn’t make many moves, especially not any big moves at the winter meetings. It is typically pretty quiet and instead Alexopoulos usually takes the winter meetings as a chance to start conversations for possible future deals that he might make, but doesn’t always, you know, make moves right there at the winter meetings. You know, AA is not somebody that’s going to be forced into a deal. So, he’s talked about it before how he doesn’t necessarily like feeling pressured into that just because you’re face to face with somebody. You know, he wants to think on it and and and contemplate the potential move for a while, but he will at least begin those conversations here in these winter meetings. And hopefully with the Braves actually being out of this past year, he started those conversations at the trade deadline, maybe with a one Byron Bucks, that those conversations have already taken place. Of course, you had the GM meetings earlier in the offseason, too, and those conversations can kind of continue or begin there leading into the winter meetings, but it is typically a pretty quiet time for Braves fans. You don’t normally see AA do too much there, but what I think is going to be most impactful for the Atlanta Braves and most notable for Braves fans is the MLB draft lottery. Now, hopefully going forward, this isn’t something that we’re getting all too excited about because that means we’re coming off another bad year, but it’s not something we’ve been able to experience yet as Braves fans because they’ve been in the postseason and have not been part of the MLB draft lottery. But unfortunately, coming off the season the Braves just had, Braves got a chance to uh really have some fun on Tuesday, December 9th, when they do the draft lottery, they got a chance to get, you know, obviously the top pick, but at the very least, maybe one of the top six picks. That’s what they will choose during that draft lottery on Tuesday, December 9th. The first six picks in the MLB draft will be decided for the 2026 MLB draft. 15 teams will be in that lottery for those top six spots, and the Braves have the sixth best odds for the top pick. But again, at the very least, you’re just hoping they end up in that top six. And that would be a huge win for the Atlanta Braves. When you pair that with what we now know to be the 26th overall pick in the draft thanks to Drake Baldwin, that would be a huge, huge win for the Atlanta Braves. And as I’ve talked about before, not just for getting that extra high draft pick, which is going to be a great asset for the organization, but because of all the bonus pool money that comes with that 26th overall pick and then a top six pick, you’re talking about having one of the biggest bonus pools of any team out there, which is going to allow you to hopefully buy down some players in the draft. You look at the top odds right now for the top pick, the White Socks are number one at 27.73%, the Twins at 22.8. 18, Pirates at 16.81, Orioles at 9.24, the A’s at 6.55, and then the Braves at 4.54. So, not a great shot at that first pick. Then you got the Rays at just over 3% and the Cardinals at just over 2%. So, those are some of your best odds to get that top pick and to get into one of those top six picks. So, that’s going to be the highlight, I think, unless AA makes a big move. That’s going to be the highlight of the winter meetings for Braves fans is the MLB draft lottery and and how high up they are in that and just getting getting that draft order set in general. Uh, could be a big draft coming up for the Braves. The other part of this is the rule five draft, which will happen on Wednesday, December 10th. It’s usually the event that wraps up the winter meetings. AA surprised us last year by t taking two players in the rule five draft. And we’ll know going into it if they decide to make room on the 40man roster. You know, maybe they’re gearing up to take somebody. Obviously, if they have a full 40man roster at that point, they can’t take anybody. But last year, Alexopoulos took Anderson PR and Christian Cairo in the rule five draft. Now, neither player made it through spring training before they were given back to their their prior team. Although the Braves did manage to get PR back after the Marlins eventually just let him go. Kairo’s elected free agency this offseason so they could go get him if they wanted to. But Braves are normally pretty quiet in the rule five draft. I think what’s going to be most interesting to watch for Braves fans in the rule five draft is do they have some players taken because this year you have a couple that could get drafted in the rule five draft. And one is Blake Burkalter who I think absolutely will get taken in the rule five draft. And another is David McCabe who I don’t think will get taken but there would definitely be some serious consideration on him. So that is something to watch because I thought Blake Burkala was right there. I had him you know a peg behind Richie Fuentes and even Braun. But I do think he’s there in the pecking order for the Braves starting pitching depth. And so to lose a guy like that would hurt a little bit. Um, obviously it’s not going to hurt too much. They would have put him on the 40man roster if they thought there was a real chance of one, him getting taken and two, him being a big part of the the rotation going forward. But it does give the team some more depth in the organization. So to lose that depth would obviously sting a little bit. Not to mention he he went to Auburn, so who why would you want to lose a guy like that? The other thing to watch here at the winter meetings is the Contemporary Baseball Era Committee Hall of Fame. Yes, that is a mouthful. Yes, I think some of these other committees for Hall of Fame votes are somewhat ridiculous, but it does give Dell Murphy another shot to get into the Hall of Fame. A 16 member committee will vote on December 7th to see who of Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Carlos Delgado, Matt Kent, Don Madlin, Gary Sheffield, Fernando Valenuela, and Dale Murphy get into the Hall of Fame. Brace fans are obviously hoping this is going to be the time for Dale Murphy. But that is a pretty stacked ballot, especially if you get some voters who don’t penalize potential steroid users, you know, which there are several of them on this list here. But obviously, we all believe Dale Murphy should be in the Hall of Fame and is worthy. But I’ll just be honest, just based on merit, he is not maybe even at the top half of the list of these players that are mentioned here. So, it’s going to be tough for him to get in, but hopefully that is going to be the case and we’ll finally see him get into the Hall of Fame. And then another Braves legend up for award that will be decided on at these winner meetings, the Ford C. Frick Award, which will get announced on December 10th. You have Skip Kerry who is among the finalists for this award, but is also a pretty stacked class. You got Brian Anderson, Joe Buck, Gary Cohen, Dwayne Kyper, John Rudy, Dan Schulman, and John Sterling in there with Skip Carrey. obviously here as Braves fans are hoping Skip Carrey gets in and biased Braves fans. I think he should uh get the award, but we’ll see what happens there. So, a lot going on at the winter meetings that is pertinent to Braves fans in just beyond signings and trades, which is what we’ll talk about next. What holes will the Braves be looking to fill at the winter meetings? What free agents? What trades could take place? We’ll get into all that here next. The World Cup is coming back to North America for the first time since 1994. And with 48 teams for the first time ever, it’s going to be massive. But let’s be honest, getting tickets is usually the hardest part. That’s why the Game Time app is clutch. Finally giving fans a real advantage when it comes to snagging seats. With Game Time, you can track price drops in real time, get alerts when great seats open, and buy tickets the moment they hit the app. It puts the power back in your hands and makes going to the World Cup realistic instead of impossible. Take the guesswork out of buying World Cup tickets and every match, concert, or event. It’s not just sporting events. I’ve used it as well for for concerts or anything else that you might be looking to do in the Major League Baseball off seasonason, but definitely once baseball season comes back around, you’re going to be wanting to use Game Time to get out to a Braves game. And again, you can use Game Time to do that. Download the Game Time app, create an account, use code locked on MLB for $20 off your first purchase. Terms apply. But obviously right here for Locked on Braves, we’ll have you covered as well if anything does happen over the weekend or during the winter meetings. We’ll jump on as soon as we can to break that all down. We’ll have one more episode here this week of lockdown braves, our mailbag episode on Friday afternoon. Look for a post from Lockdown Braves on X Friday morning. Submit your question to that post to be answered on Friday afternoon’s mailback episode. Getting back into our winter meetings preview here. And looking at what the Braves have left to do this off seasonason. Obviously, they have taken care of the closer role with Riceel Glacius. They have potentially taken care of the shortstop role with Mauricio Dubon, although we’re still hoping they shoot an aim a little bit higher than that. So you look at the needs that still needs to be addressed this offseason for the Braves and I still think it’s a short stop, you know, DH some sort of bat upgrade I think needs to happen this off season. Starting pitcher just getting some depth there, some reliable depth and then relief pitching, getting at least one more high leverage arm for the bullpen. I think those are three areas that still need to be addressed this off seasonason for the Atlanta Braves. We’ll see if they’re able to get it done at the winter meetings or over these ne next couple of weeks or if AA kind of sticks with a strategy that he’s had in the past where he’s very aggressive early on. He knows the moves that he wants to make and he gets them done early and then he just kind of sits back and waits to see how the rest of the market plays out and looks for a cheap deal in January. That’s kind of been the mo that we’ve seen with Alexopoulos as GM of the Atlanta Braves. But hopefully he’s going to be a little bit more aggressive this off season. looking at some big names that could sign in the next couple of weeks or over the winter meetings. And obviously the top free agent is Kyle Tucker and there’s starting to be a little bit of rumblings on him with notes of him touring or or meeting the Blue Jays in their spring training facility in Florida. I I I feel like we see him sign in the next within the next week. Um maybe not at the winter meetings, but I think within the next week we see Kyle Tucker sign. going to be the first big domino off the board and you’re going to see things trickle down from that. We’ll see if the Blue Jays sign him. If they do, then maybe they don’t sign this next guy in Bobette, which we’ve heard very little about so far and maybe that’s because teams are trying to determine is he a short stop long-term and if he’s not then what is his value? There’s some indication that maybe he’s looking for a deal similar to what Willie Adamus got last offseason which was seven years $182 million. I’ve seen reports of him potentially getting in eight years around $200 million, but I think teams got to be very honest and realistic before they give him that type of money. Can he stick at shortstop long term? Because that value is a little bit lower if you’re a second baseman. But obviously with his bat, I don’t think you’re going to concern yourself too much with that and he’s going to get paid either way. But have not heard a ton of talk about Bobette. The only thing I’ve really heard so far is that apparently he’s going to play for team Brazil in the World Baseball Classic, which would be fun. I can’t wait for that to happen. Uh it gives us a little bit something more to get exciting about before the actual season starts. But Kyle Tucker, I think he signs in the next week and a half. I don’t know about Bob yet. His market could go on go on a little bit longer. But like I said, with Tucker, you know, having interest from the Blue Jays, Blue Jays already making some big signings. You wonder if they can afford to do both of those. So if they do sign Kyle Tucker, where does Bobette go? Or are the Blue Jays just spending like that? They got that taste of that World Series. They were so so close and now it feels like they’re doing everything they can to get back there and finish the job. Curious to see what happens with these Japanese players. Obviously, they are on a a deadline for where they have to sign for their their posting date. None of those are coming up too quickly. I think by the end of end of the month, but be interested to see if any of those guys sign. You know, Makami, MI, we are seeing a little bit. I think the Cubs, Yankees, Mets, they got all the teams that you would typically see be in on those guys. as those are some of the teams that were rumored to be in on Amay, but we’ll see if any of those Japanese players sign. Alex Bregman, haven’t heard much, although just before I jumped on there was a report that the Cubs, if they were to lose out on Kyle Tucker, that they might pivot to a guy like Alex Bregman, but other than that, haven’t heard much on Bregman this off season. Former Valdez after the C signing, you kind of felt like the market was set for Valdez and I think it is. I he’ll maybe get a little bit less than that, but it’ll be in that same ballpark. So, he’s somebody that wouldn’t surprise me either if he signs here pretty quickly now that CE is off the board and especially if Amay then comes off the board as well. I think Cody Bellinger’s markets probably waiting for Kyle Tucker. I think teams that miss out on Kyle Tucker could potentially go after Cody Bellinger, although I think he’s just going back to New York anyway. I don’t know how they could let him go after the season that he had with them. Uh Kyle Schwarber, a lot of smoke around Schwarber in the Cincinnati Reds here, which I would love to see. I would love to see him go to that ballpark in Cincinnati. Get him out of the NL East. I think that would be really, really awesome for the Braves fans, but also just awesome for baseball in general to see Kyle Schwarber hit some tanks in that stadium. Uh, at the very least, hopefully the Reds are going to drive up the price for the Phillies. And it’s just fun to see the Reds are in on a big-time free agent. So, we’ll see what happens with Kyle Schwarber, but there has been a lot of talk of him lately, so hopefully he’s getting close to signing. I’m interested to see what happens with Edwin Diaz after the Mets signed Devin Williams. Do they double down and give Edwin Diaz 80 million, 80 to 100 million, something like that as I think what Edwin Diaz could get? Where does he he go if he doesn’t go back to the Mets? You know, do they pivot and maybe try to get a Robert Suarez too for the back of the bullpen? So, there’s still some really good relievers out there on the market. And then I think there’s that second tier of of pitchers that are probably waiting on Framber, waiting on Amai to sign. You got Ranger Suarez, Michael King, Zack Gallon. It feels like that group is kind of just in a holding status right now till some of those other guys sign. Some teams to watch for trades at the winter meetings. The Twins, obviously, we’ve talked a lot about the Twins and Byron Buckston, you know, Joe Ryan, Lopez, they certainly could be a big factor this off seasonason. The Twins and what they ultimately end up doing. And you feel like they trade one of these guys, they got to trade all of them. And maybe not right now, maybe not this off seasonason, but you do feel like if they’re going to tear it down, these three guys have to go. So that’ll be very interesting to watch if one leads to another. The Brewers are an interesting team to watch. Unfortunately for their fans, the team ownership says that the budget is tight, which I don’t understand, but Peralta, Woodruff, maybe Yelich, you could see maybe one of them get moved. The Cardinals, even after trading Sunny Gray, you could see them ship off Brennan Donovan. He’s been a a hot name this off seasonason already. A lot of teams interested in him. Maybe Nolan Corman is a big left-handed power bat. Jojo Romero, a really good reliever that I’ve talked about a lot for the Braves. Honestly, I would love if the Braves just went and traded for Brennan Donovan. Jojo Romero. I I would be really happy with that type of offseason. The Nats, Mackenzie Gore, a name that’s been mentioned a lot. CJ Abrams as well. They could move one or either of one or both of those guys. And then the Red Sox with Jiren Durant and Willard Abrau. There’s been a lot of talk about the Red Sox potentially trading one of those guys. So, there a lot of action still to be done this off season. There’s been, you know, a lot of movement already and some signings, but there’s still a lot more out there that could happen. And again, a lot of that probably going to unfold here over the next couple of weeks or so. Uh PJ’s Braves says, “The Braves do nothing of note. Give Hector Harris another shot. I hope that’s not the case.” Jason Watson says the Braves get Byron and Buckton from the Twins for less than than we thought. Richie, Kimoniti, and Alvarez. That’d be a pretty big package right there if it’s Richie and Camoniti in that deal. That’s about what I said yesterday. Uh I just threw in one more name in that with a lottery ticket in Jose Pommo. Um ABPC says the Braves trade for Buckton and sign Basset. I wouldn’t mind the Basset deal at all, especially if you can get him on like a one-year $15 million deal, something like that. I think getting in somebody like Chris Basset would certainly be a really good move for the Atlanta Braves. So, we’ll see if they can get that done over the winter meetings. But, thanks so much for sending in your thoughts and ideas there. Next, we will get into some of the news that did happen, including Ronkuna Jr. continuing to obliterate baseballs in the Venezuelan Winter League. We’ll talk about all that here next. NFL Sundays move fast. One big play and suddenly everything feels different. That’s why making live betting with FanDuel is so exciting. They’ve been at 2,000 ever since the offseason began. So, a little bit of a momentum there for the Atlanta Braves World Series odds. You can check all that out at fando.com. Also, please make sure you visit fando.com/playsafe for tools and resource to help you stay in control of the way you play. So, if you want to be right in the middle of the action this season, visit fanuel.com and place your NFL live bets all season long. FanDuel, the game moves fast and so can you. I mentioned before the break, Rona Jr. playing in the Venezuelan Winter League. Not sure how you feel about that, but I am glad that even in the winter now, we’re getting Ronald Kuna Jr. highlights and he destroyed baseball the other night straight away center field over the wall behind the center field wall. It was just a majestic shot. Really cool to see. He’s going off over there having fun doing what he loves to do in playing baseball. I’m never going to be mad at somebody for that. Obviously, I really want him to stay healthy, but glad to see him doing what he loves best and doing it really, really well. The Braves did sign another pitcher to a minor league deal, Austin Pope, right-handed pitcher, 27 years old, made his big league debut last year for the Diamondbacks through two scoreless innings. Has a four steamer that averaged 94 miles per hour. Also throws a slider curve and sinker. Uh, but pretty impressive strikeout rate in the minor leagues over the last three years, 27.6%. So maybe the Braves kind of banking on that and he has three minor league options left under team control for a while. Not on the 40man roster. So just some really good depth that you can move around if you need to in Austin Pope. So the Braves continuing to build out that minor league pitching depth. Now there were a lot of signings, a lot of moves happening over the past week or so or past couple of days actually. The Reds signed reliever Alio Pagan to a two-year $20 million deal. Again, I would have loved that deal for for the Atlanta Braves. Certainly not too upset about it, but 10 million a year for a guy in Pagan who has been historically a pretty good reliever. There have been some ups and downs certainly, but then had some good closing experience last year. So, could have been a backup closer for you. So, a pretty solid deal for him to go back to the Reds where he did become their closer last year. And as I mentioned earlier, the Reds are also very, very interested in Kyle Schwarver. So, we’ll see what happens there. World Series hero Miguel Rojos is returning to the Dodgers for one more year at five and a half million dollars before calling it quits. So, I know there was some talk early on about the Braves perhaps going and getting a a Mickey Rojos for that veteran backup shortstop defensive infielder type. He pretty much said he was either coming back to the Dodgers or he was going to retire. So, he gets one more year with the Dodgers. If I were him go out the way that he did, I don’t know that he necessarily needs the money, but it is 5 a.5 million. Uh, so that could certainly persuade me, but uh, certainly seemed like a great way to go out if you’re Miguel Rojos, but one more year back with the Dodgers. The Rays signed Cedric Mullins for one year, 7 million, or there were some Braves fans maybe wanted to bring Cedric Mullins back to Atlanta. I just never really thought it was a good fit with him being I would have liked the centerfield aspect of it to back up Michael Harris. Both of them, you know, being lefties. It just never made sense. But I do like like that type of of deal that one year 7 million. That’s kind of what I’d be looking for if they don’t get the big bat, but get a get an outfield type like Cedric Mullins. A platoon type can do some different things for you, especially if they can play center field and get them for that five five seven million a year type of deal. The White Sox signed Anthony Kay to a two-year deal where 12 million after a big year in Japan. So trying to do similar what they did with Eric Fetty who had a big year in the KBO. They signed him, had a good first half of 2024, trade him for some assets. Obviously, it went downhill from there. The Braves got the the end of that. The Guardians signed Carter Brockton to a big league contract. The Dodgers showing some interest in perhaps trading to Oscar Hernandez. And this is where things get very interesting with the Los Angeles Dodgers because they have all these players with this deferred money. And how does that how does that work for them in in trade scenarios? And would teams be willing to take on that contract with all that deferred money? could make it very difficult for the Dodgers to move some of these guys. I don’t think they’re going to be, you know, too keen on moving a lot of these players. They’ve done these deferred deals with like obviously Show Otani and others, but I just I thought that was something that I hadn’t really considered before that if they try to sign these contracts, they’re signing these guys with all that deferred money. The Giants hired Ron Washington as their infield coach. that really hurt me uh in the feelings when I saw that because I’ve talked about the fact that I don’t know who’s coaching the Braves infield of all these coaches that they brought in and I would have loved for it to been Ron Washington. I don’t know why it wasn’t Ron Washington, but he is going to the Giants to be their infield coach. So certainly wish all the best and most of all hope that his health is under control there and he can get back to doing what he loves in coaching baseball. And then I mentioned earlier Kyle Tucker visiting the Blue Jays facility down there in spring training in Dun Eden. Uh so we’ll see if Kyle Tucker’s getting closer and closer to signing. Lot of news, a lot of rumors going to be popping up here over the next week or so. Again, make sure you subscribe here to Locked on Braves. Be covering all of that. Question 2. GM/Baseball Ops Game
Interpret the following FULLY:
What does Tony LaRusa and former STL pitching coach, Dave Duncan, mean when they said and agreed, "Beware of Braves pitchers [available in Free Agency or offered in a Trade]." ???
Hint: It's how every Braves GM conducted and SHOULD CONDUCT business re: the Braves roster maintenance.
I just found out that legendary pitcher Bob Gibson was a brave. Pitching coach from 82-84
I can't hear you
