Well, it’s another day here on the Bernie Show. Greetings. Welcome to STL Sports Central presented by DraftKings. The crown is yours. That’s the Bernie Show. Thank you, DraftKings. Uh, DraftKings’s launch is live and legal in Missouri. So, sign up by opening account and join the fund. Man, the early response has been fantastic. Anyway, I’m Bernie Miklas. You know me, I think. I’ve been writing and talking about St. Louis area sports raising hell since 1985. I do five videos and write five columns a week, each week here on STL Sports Central. also do a couple of hits each week uh on the site with my friend and longtime colleague Randy Carricker. And you can catch me frequently throughout the week on multiple programs on Cameo X FM and AM. Today’s topic, the decline of the Cardinals franchise. And one word comes to mind, at least to me, and that word would be stunning. As Derek Gold reported recently at STL today, the St. Cardinals will be receiving payments for the first time ever in the Major League Baseball program that began in 1996, the revenue sharing program. And the Cardinals will be receiving money in re revenue sharing for the very first time. I had to repeat that because it’s a dramatic change. compared to other recipients, the Cardinal share will be on the low side, but still that’s not the point. Um, it it’s just a a seismic shift for that represents the the decline in popularity of the franchise, at least for now. I guess there’s a good note to this, too. But because of their change in status, this downgrade, if you will, now that they’re a charity recipient, to put it another way, the Cardinals will be eligible for a top six draft pick in the upcoming MLB draft lottery. So, as a quote pee, the Cardinals will benefit from the revenue sharing program. Uh, the fact that it’s even gotten to this point is, yes, stunning. Uh, I’ve seen some people online, including uh David Samson, longtime uh major league team executive. uh he has his own YouTube show and he did something on this and he he said to him it was just absolutely shocking that the Cardinals and basically are in line with the other small market teams and uh you know they they got their hand out because their revenues have fallen so much. I don’t feel sorry for anyone. So let’s just get that out of the way. We’ll we’ll cover that here in in a minute or two. Uh this just shows how far the Cardinals have fallen after an extensive period of being in mid excuse me a mid-market franchise that could stand with baseball’s financial heavyweights because of their booming home attendance that dramatically outperformed the Cardinals middleweight standing. The Cardinals first exceeded three million in home attendance back in 1989. Beginning in 1998, the team drew 3 million plus fans to home games 21 times over the next 22 seasons. And the only season that streak ended was the COVID interrupted pandemic season of 2020, which also affected 2021 in terms of attendance. So once everything returned to normal in 2022, the Cardinals attracted 3.3 million that season, reached 3.2 million in 2023. But then came that uh during that 23 season, you know, they stumbled to 71 and 91. Uh and it began a downturn. The Cardinals fell to just under 2.9 million in home attendance in 2024, then flopped to uh just over 2.2 million last season. The empty seats at Bush Stadium were a glaring red warning light, noting, signaling loud and clear the fan disappointment, disillusionment, and disgust. For three plus decades, the two Bush stadiums hosted basically one continuous baseball party each season with the Cardinals fan fans showing up in incredible numbers, frequently ranking among the top three teams in the majors for home attendance. For a long, long time, the only franchises that regularly could hang with the Cardinals in terms of home attendance were the monster size markets in Los Angeles, the Dodgers, and New York, the Yankees. Well, those parties are they’ve subsided. They’re over for now. Apathy has set in. And in 2025, the Cardinals attendance sunk to an average of 27,778 fans per home game. That average ranked uh 19th among the 30 teams. The year before they were seventh. They slipped to 19th last year. But more notably, this was St. Louis’s a uh lowest average attendance per home game in a full season since 1984. This is bad. Uh this is bleak. Um and now they’re rebuilding. But let’s just dial it back a second here. This is also what can happen at the end of a glorious run for a franchise. Uh, and that franchise’s own failure to uphold the high established standards for success and entertainment. You can never take it for granted. More on that in a bit. But first, I want to tell you about DraftKings again because I love to. And DraftKings is officially open for business in Missouri. We are the Show Me the Money State. All right, let’s dive into Thank you for supporting DraftKings and all of our sponsors. All right, segment number two. As I mentioned, the Cardinals were shoulder-to-shoulder with teams like the Dodgers and the Yankees and their ability to sell an extraordinary number of tickets to home games for a long time. And the re, you know, accordingly, the revenue flow came rushing in higher and higher and higher. The level kept getting bigger and bigger and bigger. And that flow kept rolling on and on and on. And now as a revenue sharing recipient for the first time, the Cardinals stand in a large cluster of teams that include the A’s, the Pirates, Rockies, Marlins, Reds, Rays, Royals, and Guardians. man, you know, considering what this was not all that long ago for such a proud and historically prominent franchise, this is kind of embarrassing. Or wait a minute. Let me hold on and revisit that. Could this actually be the new norm for Cardinals baseball? I certainly wouldn’t rule that out because this team’s now in a rebuilding phase likely going to extend their absence from the postseason to five or six seasons because they hadn’t made the postseason since 2022. And that almost certainly will lead to a higher empty seat count at Bush Stadium, right? You’d have to think. And the revenue will continue to recede and get lower and lower and lower unless the Cardinals, you know, are able to do something to get the fans fired up again. and they they have some good young players on the way. There will be better days ahead. I just don’t know how soon. And please uh I I ask you please understand what I’m saying here when I’m talking about the decreased flow of revenue and the you know the loss of revenue power and uh you know the Cardinals are standing in line with these you know small much smaller franchises and who don’t win all that much or some of them don’t. But let’s make this straight. If you think I have sympathy for ownership, you are absolutely wrong. Uh the Dwits are doing just well. The estimated franchise value of $2.55 billion for 2025 ranked 11th in the majors. Now that is down from the previous rankings, but let’s just put it this way. The Dwits won’t be rumaging around for food. I think they’re fine. But ownership is ultimately responsible for the team’s success or the team’s failure. And Cardinals ownership let the product slide and they let the player development level and and they let that fall apart which had serious repercussions for the major league product. This team does not have any high impact stars to draw fans. Some of their touted prospects have flopped. The entertainment quality went from exciting to dull in a really short time. The end of an era can be painful and I think that’s part of this. I mean we all including me it just enjoyed watching baseball at the highest level with some huge stars you know just coming through all the time to take their turns being Cardinals and elevating this franchise even more over the over a period of about at least 25 years. The Cardinals put a large collection of stars on the field. The galaxy included Albert Ples, Y Molina, Jim Edmonds, Adam Wayright, Scott Roland, Chris Carpenter, Matt Holidayiday, Matt Carpenter, Edgar Runia, Paul Goldmith, David Fes, Ray Langford, Matt Morris, Jason Isinghousen, Nolan Aronado, who was still a Cardinal, but he’s at the end. That’s a list, I believe, of 15 names, 15 Cardinals who are already in the team hall of fame or will be inducted at some point. I mean, I don’t know about Aronado, but we’ll see. That’s neither here nor there for now. That’s a lot of St. Louis Cardinals Hall of Famer. They were part of this team for a long period of time. From 23 to through the end of 2025, the Cardinals were among the worst big league teams at scoring runs and hitting homers. And the starting pitching was way below average in erra. And that’s why that gives you a winning percentage that ranked 22nd among the 30 teams over the last three seasons. There was also some other factors. John Mosak, the former president of baseball operations, alienated and angered fans in a way that was extremely damaging. uh ownership was accused of over and over and over again not willing being willing to spend. But as you know if you follow me uh actually the much bigger problem in my opinion was spending payroll dollars poorly and letting the player development system rot. There will come a day where the Cardinals will have to reach deeper and go after some high-end talent and high-end talent makes the most money. We’re not there right now though because of the rebuild. Um anyway, this overwhelming combination of negative factors led to some pretty obvious consequences. Cardinals home ticket sales have plummeted by just about 31% over the past two seasons and the season ticket sales are lagging. the Cardinals caught up in the decline of the whole cable TV unraveling and also their partner in streaming um had some of their own financial difficulties. So, the Cardinals had to redo their broadcast rights deal before last season and receive 23% less revenue uh in 2025 from their TV broadcast, telecast, whatever you want to call it. And all of a sudden, based on the major league formula, this ain’t me saying it. According to the major league formula for deciding who receives uh a revenue share cut, St. Louis has a bottom five market score. Whoa. Whoa. I’m dizzy. So, how do the Cardinals win the fans back? I’m going to discuss it in my third and final segment of today’s Bernie Show coming up in a minute. But I got to fire up the fellas right now to try Blue Chew as a way to jumpst start your sweet, wonderful, intimate, special relations with your partner. I know what Blue Chu has done for me. From an overview standpoint, the Cardinals have been a top five uh franchise competitively during 30 seasons of the DWIT ownership. That’s a fact. Since 1996, Dwitz team ranks fifth overall and third in the National League for the most regular season wins. And Dwitz franchise ranks fourth overall and second in the National League for most postseason wins. That’s that’s a large sample size, 30 seasons. But but over the past 10 seasons that that would be beginning in 2016, the Cardinals have missed making the playoffs six times in the 10 years and have have only four 1, two, three, four postseason victories to show for it. And the repercussions are substantial. The fallout is substantial. The falling attendance is substantial. though absolutely necessary in my opinion. The real rebuilding project under high bloom is going to require some time and patience. I think he’s going to do a hell of a job with it. But patience is also running low. And Cardinal fans by and large, they don’t know Heim Bloom, right? They want to trust him. I do trust him, but I understand, you know, a little skepticism, sure. So being able to make a comeback with their own fans is the most difficult challenge in my opinions the Dwits have faced in their soontobe 31st season of ownership. I believe the Cardinals are going to come out of the rebuild in better shape. Well, I know they are because they couldn’t, you know, they’re going to get out of that mediocre slop. At least they have a firm direction and there’s going to be a lot of young talent to energize this whole thing. And I think they’re going to have a more exciting product product, pardon me, to present to the fans. But there’s never a guarantee of that. And this ain’t a quick fix. And it won’t be a tear down, but it ain’t going to be an easy turnaround either. Here’s my concern. There has been a generational change in the Cardinals fan base. And maybe the St. Louis market has changed in a way dramatic way that I didn’t anticipate. But even when the Cardinals made the playoffs in over four consecutive years starting in 2019, hey, there were no a noticeable number of empty seats at Bush Stadium for postseason games against the Braves in 2019, the Nationals in 2019, and the na and excuse me, and the Phillies in 2022. There are fan, as you know, because you’re a fan, there are fan concerns over downtown safety, uh, parking, the cost of taking a family to games. Will the Cardinals ever be as prominent again? They got a lot of factors working against them. Is it realistic to expect them to return to the days of ranking third or even second in the majors of home attendance? I sincerely have some doubts and I hope I’m wrong. And I could be wrong because compared to other pro franchises or college programs in our area, the interest level in the Cardinals remains high and it remains intense. The TV ratings conclusively show that. I can speak for our site and many other sites. Cardinals content absolutely dominates sport sports media sites in the online marketplace. It ain’t even close. Trust me. And the difference is the highest interest level which is still there. It is not leading to similar results in terms of selling tickets to home games. But it’s up to the Cardinals to start winning again and start entertaining the fans again and then they’ll start to win back the fans approval. Maybe gradually it can be done, but it’s a tough tough time right now. I go back to u I I really appreciated something that Joe Strom said. He’s the Cardinals president of ticket sales. Does a great job. In a conversation with Derrick Gold late in the 2025 season, Strom put it on the line. He said, and I quote, “Fans have a right to voice their pleasure or displeasure, and we know there is work to get people back. We have to earn them back. That’s the entertainment industry. You got to earn people’s discretionary income.” Well said by Joe Stum. Nothing to add there except to reiterate, it’s all up to the people who run this St. Louis institution of a franchise, an iconic franchise that’s now standing with some of the worst teams in baseball as a recipient of revenue sharing. But it’s up to them to change that, to inspire and motivate fans for an eventual homecoming and some more good times at Bush Stadium, the way it used to be, just like in the golden days of the Dwit era. They got to get this thing back on track and only they can do it. So, thanks for watching the Birdie Show. Hope you have a great rest of your Thursday. We’ll be back tomorrow here on STL Sports Central. Thank you as always. Hello there. I’m Bernie Miklas and I want to take a minute to brag about everything that we’re doing here on STL Sports Central. But first, if you don’t mind, I’m going to tell you a quick story because I think you need to hear it. When this site began uh a few m a few months ago, whenever it was, right, I was curious to see what I would find here. Uh I love sports content, but I can be a little picky. I want it to be consistent. I want it to be smart. I want it to be fun. I want it to be something I can count on. Not every now and then, but every day if possible. Well, listen, uh I got all of that and then some. I I was simply blown away by the huge amount of content, good content, quality content, a variety of content on this site. Hey, there’s Cardinals coverage with Card Central 365, which is there for you every single day, 365 days a year. You’re going to stay up tod date with a great cast of hosts, my friends that include Brendan Schaefer, Mike Claybourne, Joe Roderick, Stephan Carrey, Ryan Fagan, and many more. And that’s not all. There’s postgame shows after every game. In fact, I’m This is about the Cardinals coverage, but there’s postgame shows after every game, any St. Louis sports team, college or pro. It’s amazing. And these postgame shows feature uh the hosts that I’ve already mentioned plus in terms of the Cardinals postgames plus Sarah Daly and Ethan Hannerford. And I’m in the bullpen in case they want to bring the old reliever out so I can holler about something. Long story short, and I wasn’t very short, but here’s the story. I was so impressed with STL Sports Central. I knew something right away. I wanted to be part of the team and so I am. Here I am. Please join us all. There’s nothing like this in the SP St. Louis sports market. There is nothing like it in this market. There never has been. And we are breaking that ground. We are changing the way St. Louis sports fans consume their sports content. I’m proud to be on the squad. Thank you and join

The St. Louis Cardinals have officially fallen from Major League Baseball’s financial elite and will receive revenue sharing payments for the first time ever. Bernie Miklasz breaks down the shocking data behind this decline and what it means for the future of the franchise under the DeWitt ownership.

Key Takeaways:
* A Historic Shift: For the first time since the program began in 1996, the Cardinals are revenue sharing recipients rather than payers.
* Attendance Freefall: Home attendance dropped to 2.2 million in 2024, the lowest full-season average since 1984.
* The “Small Market” Reality: The team is now financially grouped with franchises like the Oakland A’s, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Miami Marlins.
* Financial Hits: Ticket revenue is down 31% over two seasons, and the TV broadcast deal was slashed by 23%.
* Ownership Accountability: Bernie argues that the DeWitt family is responsible for the product’s decline by neglecting player development and spending poorly.
* The Rebuild Road: Chaim Bloom faces a massive challenge in winning back a fanbase that has grown apathetic.

  1. I am furious with this garbage pure garbage. Small market? The only other team to have 2+ million fans is the dodgers these are facts I have watched 150+ since 2015. You want to keep ripping this team!? This is such garbage holy shit. You know better than Jim Leland Tony Gwen? You know better than Peter gammons? This is just beyond frustrating. Game 4 didn’t sell out however there was a sell out in game 3 that was the first time in history a playoff game had not sold out. Die hard Cardinal fans will not relent on the BFINB you have some nerve calling it a small market team as the cubs are cutting massive amounts of jobs at there network Marquee. Small market? I am sorry this is the baseball capitol of the world non Cardinal people have said this. The fans do not deserve this type of slander especially when non Cardinals people have said the BFINB

  2. Small market? Small market? This ownership has been amazing you stated these facts in this video. There is no but you cannot just cherry pick the eras that don’t work out. Maybe if we’re not getting drowned out by the constant media bashing.

  3. It’s been obvious for 10 years to anyone paying attention to what’s happening in the league. MLB will like the EPL in 10 years, 3-4 regularly competing teams while everyone just tries to turn a profit. The Cards are closer to being the Pirates than competing for a WS. Just like Tottenham is closer to being a Championship League team than being an actual contender for an EPL title.

  4. I don't blame Mr DeWitt. Like it or not……He brought us Championship baseball. I do however blame his errogant son. This downfall seems to have started when he took over? Then he insulted the fan's. That combined with giving a last place finish coach an extention was it for me. I'm a hour from Springfield. So I'll get my live baseball there. I'll still watch every game, no matter how painful? But bringing back all the same folks that helped this happened tells me this organization has turned into a tax write off and nothing else. All the bla bla "We're fixing the minors" isn't going to change that.

  5. He’s not called DeWallet by honest fans for nothing. Blaming fans and calling this a small market is why nobody trusts what you say anymore. You’re more a hate watch. I’m old enough to remember when we were a dominant mid market. The only reason we’re small market is because nobody’s watching anymore but at least DeWitt got his check. We all know YOU won’t talk about it but I’m sure Bill is liking this side of baseball.

  6. The naive Fredbirrd media was a little off.No one is going to.put out hard earned money on a regular basis to go see minor leaque baseball. One thing I would suggest to corporate tell us where the steaming channel is for that days broadcast. Just sayin

  7. Several good points in this video, Bernie!!!

As you have noted many times, BDW2 has largely been a great owner, and his 29 year reign as owner, while severely marred by the last 10 seasons, is still more than mostly positive on it's face. Same goes for Mozeliak's tenure as GM and POB. That said, any candid post mortem nevertheless demonstrates more than negligence, more than hubris, but rather complete recklessness in both operational and baseball related decisions.

BDW2 and Mozeliak destroyed this franchise. Absolutely destroyed it to the point that it does not even resemble the organization of even 5 years ago. They did this together. Neither 1 alone could of inflicted such damage. It was a joint effort with agency by each one.

BDW2's irrational devotion to Mozeliak, even when at odds with every objective voice in the industry, is complete lunacy. While this does not erase his accomplishments or color his decision to move back in the direction of draft and develop, it is still mind boggling that he will not publicly acknowledge the damage he inflected by not making a course correction sooner in the front office and baseball operations.

Many of his public statements continue to be hard to square. He doubled and tripled down the last 2 seasons in public statements that MiLB was basically humming like a top and that the reported problems with staff, technology and overall culture was minimally out of control. However, he then hires Bloom to completely overhaul MiLB, add technology and hire at least 25 separate individuals since last winter. How does this make any sense if there was nothing wrong with the culture and MiLB operations?

He has doubled and tripled down on line item FA expenditures, and all public reporting, including yours for years, has regularly noted that he is intimately involved in baseball operation decisions. And in hindsight, we all know that 90 percent of these the last 10 seasons were stupid and not commensurate with modern baseball. Again, how do we square his actions with his words because I find it impossible.

He has publicly doubled and tripled down that the current culture change is not a rebuild. Chaim was not even allowed to utter the word rebuild since taking over. Neither was Mozeliak. However, we all know that a rebuild is taking place, and a significant one at that. It is like a company that pays out for an operational disaster, changes operating policy, changes personnel, and will not admit in words that there was ever an actual disaster.

Who is he kidding. Everybody in the industry knows there was disaster. It happen. There is objective proof. Yes, it is good that he finally woke up from his decade long snooze and decided to fix it. Mazel all round. But wow, if he wants the fans back, if he wants his status back, it would go a long way to just publicly admit in words that there was an actual disaster. We both know this will never happen though, and he will go to his grave standing by his public statements minimizing the disaster as some sort of hoax, while at the same time changing every aspect of the organization moving forward under Bloom.

I like Bloom and am confident he will fix the culture. But if you listen to BDW2 carefully, it is again, unclear what he is actually here to fix. Mozeliak was doing a great job. MiLB was doing a great job. Ownership was doing a great job. But it all needed to be thrown out . It is like some 5th grade magic show. Everyone can see the kid has the card palmed in his hand. But we are all supposed to applause and look astonished when he pulls the Ace off the top of the deck.

  8. We can't be suprised by this news. The Dewitts are getting expected results. Sow discord with the fans and revenue drops. FYI … we are the customer.

  9. Bernie has great points. I think it’s the neglect of the farm system more than anything. The Cardinals have brought up and then traded players that went on to success in other franchises. AP came glaringly clear that the development of the talent was figured out by a bunch of other teams in the Cardinals could not.

  10. I would like to see Bernie do a show on the dangers that legalized gambling will do to the integrity of all sports. Soon no one will have confidence they are watching clean games. I know this goes against The Crown and the industry, but where our the guidelines? Where is the fan protection that the games are clean? Maybe none of this is important and the gambling income is more important than the games themselves. The Crown is yours! Your money is ours!

  11. John Mozeliak coasted on the work of Jeff Luhnow.

The DeWitt’s should have cleaned house of Mozeliak and Marmol after losing 91 games in 2023 and brought on Chaim Bloom to run things.

When the DeWitts did not do this they told the fans losing 91 games is acceptable when you show up to games.

The high strikeout totals are not acceptable.
Not hitting at least .280 is not acceptable.
I do not want to hear another coach mention launch angle when their players are hitting .230.

  12. You can't slash payroll by $100M, provide a losing product and still gouge the fans for every penny they have. They have to lower prices to get people back in the ballpark until there is a product worth paying for.

  13. Degraded entertainment quality? Takes some chutzpah for you to snark about that. St Louis people like a certain kind of entertaining baseball even if it's not championship level: speed, defense, relief pitching; Whiteyball, in a word. Not the TTOslop you and your sabersperg peers have cursed the game with. An updated version of Whiteyball can be done successfully in the modern game; witness the 2014-15 Royals, and to a degree the 2025 Brewers. But whenever local fans clamor for that style of baseball you are the absolute first to gleefully swat them down and call them stupid idiot morons who dont understand STATs

  14. Dewitt’s realized they can’t compete with large market spenders and didn’t reinvest. Mo took the fall for it. Even with some money going to minors and coaching, it won’t be enough to consistently compete….without one thing….a salary cap minimum and max. Lets hope it’s coming for baseball survival.

  15. I have been a fan since 1964. The last couple of years has the most boring baseball I have seen. The team lacks a personality, style of play. I would like to see more NL teams playing each other. There's no relationship with many of the AL teams .

  16. WITH ALL DUE RESPECT Why DON’T YOU JUST ADMIT THE TRUTH THAT THE CARDINALS WON’T. I WAS AT CARDINAL GAMES WHERE IF THEY HAD 15000 BUTTS IN SEATS THAT WAS A LOT. Yet the ATTENDANCE was near 30000 “OFFICIALLY “ -PURE PROPAGANDA -definition ATTENDANCE IS BUTTS IN SEAT (NOT TICKETS SOLD). I’M TIRED OF BEING TREATED AS SOMEONE TO DUMB TO KNOW THE DIFFERENCE! BERNIE I THINK YOU ARE THE BEST BUT PLRASE CALL A SPADE A SPADE DON’T USE ATTENDANCE WHEN IT ISN’T. THANKS FOR ALL YOU DO!!!

  17. Bernie podcasts are all over the place. No consistency. It is simple. Bad trades by Mo and contracts. Poor coaches and manager. Owner who lost sight on how to win. Great managers are great for a reason. Yeah they don’t win every year but understand how the game is played. Marmol is not a great or good manager. Players batting all over the line up, no offense consistency, we have 8 position players. Gorman and Walker were supposed to be the sluggers of the team. Both were failures. Center Outfielders were non existent offensively. This team was just blah.
With the strike season of ‘27 coming don’t expect any improvement for ‘26. Save the money Dewitt.

  18. The Cardinals had losing seasons in '97 &' 99, and had a middling record in '98. But they got fans in with the excitement of Big Mac. I think they should follow Rob Rains' suggestion and bring in Tatis Jr. He'd be perfect for Cardinals fans, since most of us have good memories of his father in St Louis. It would bring some fans in while Chaim does his rebuild thing. Otherwise interest may drop off.

  19. Mo and company ran it into the ground. Over with. There is no nice way to put it. Now the team is getting b props for selling off players for unknown maybes and stripping down payroll. Management will not make an effort to place a winning MLB team on the field. When they start doing that I will start attending games again. My boss don't pay me to fail and I won't pay for it either.

  20. I’m excited about the Cardinals future. They have a solid young manager. We have a President of Operations that has a clue of how to mange a team. I want to see us secure more young prospects. They’ll start winning again. I give them a couple of years. Mozeliak got lazy and set us back.
