The Red Sox just ROBBED the Pirates…
The Boston Red Sox just robbed the Pittsburgh Pirates. I’m here to break down the brand new trade that just took place between these two organizations and whether or not the Red Sox got better with this move. We’ll break down that as well as what the plans look to be for this Red Sox team going forward after this new starting pitcher acquisition. We’ll break down all of that on this episode of Red Sox Digest. But first, please do remember if you want to stay up to date with everything Red Sox, scroll down and click that subscribe button. We do appreciate all the love and support. So, thank you guys. But now, let’s get to it and break down a major trade for the Boston Red Sox. Now, it is not the headliner or blockbuster name we were all anticipating when it came down to the starting pitching market coming into the off season that was really speculating and circulating around this Red Sox organization. But I’m here to tell you not to overreact and not to start burning bridges between you and your overall opinions on Craig Brelo and the rest of the front office for this Red Sox organization. And the reason being, and I understand it, the connections this Red Sox team has been in allegedly for the last year and some change, dating back to last year’s trade deadline and Joe Ryan, and now through this up up to this point in the offseason where names like McKenzie Gore, names like Freddy Peralta, Hunter Green, Chris Bubich, Cole Reagan, the list goes on of notable names that have been in connections to this Red Sox team. And despite that, and despite the words from Craig Brezlo where he, and again, I am paraphrasing ever so greatly, so don’t exactly quote me here, but Brezlo is on the record saying something along the lines of, “We don’t want fours and fives. We want a number two guy to put next to the ace and Garrick Crochet.” And up to this point in the offseason, yes, the Red Sox have gone out there and acquired starting pitching and Sunonny Gray and now W or Johan Oedo. But are either of these guys a dominant number two? Are any either of these guys have even the expectations or just the a level of hope surrounding them that leaves Red Sox Nation and this and or this organization hopeful they will be the number two option in the starting rotation by the time of I don’t know the next time when the regular season begins this up and coming regular season begins or even by the trade deadline of this up and cominging season. No, not necessarily. I’m here to tell you that Oedo, despite not being the big name, there are a few really good things and factors that go along with him. The first thing is that he’s relatively young and despite dealing with some injuries that he’s now returned from, he’s still very young and there is a lot of control out in front of him. Two more years of arbitration and the overall anticipated value is about $2 million annually. So, the price tag is extremely low while also maintaining team control for the next two seasons. We know that is something the Red Sox and Craig Brezlo are idling and really something they are focusing on. They don’t want to go out there and give up a huge trade package to get back someone along the lines of whether it’s TK school or Hunter Green whatever it may be to then just have them land in Boston and immediately have to forfeit forfeit excuse me 300 400 250 whatever it may be million dollars to then acquire them for years after this up and cominging season. So, if you think of it in that sense, they gave up some puh some pieces, some assets, some prospects, which we’ll get to in just a second, in exchange for a 26-year-old starting pitcher with two more years of control. And it seems like a whole lot of potential out in front of him. Now, we got the news from Jeff Passen as he goes on to say tonight, the Red Sox are acquiring right-hander Johan Ovo in a deal that will send outfielder Yachen Garcia back to Pittsburgh. Sources tell ESPN in total it’s a fiveplayer trade. the password. Garcia is who we are referencing. One of the top prospects in the Red Sox organization who didn’t do a whole lot in the two games, three games that he was able to come up to the major league level and actually participate in this past season. And it felt like the Red Sox were willing to trade him. There was conversations he was in trade conversations dating back to this past trade deadline that we referenced earlier and Joe Ryan. And obviously nothing took place. And now through up to this point in the offseason, a lot of the conversation surrounding the Red Sox and the assets they’re going to be looking to trade are outfielders, particularly Will Breu, Jiren Durant, and now the password because of really the log jam they have in the outfield position with the amount of talent they have. Obviously, the two names we’ve already mentioned as well as Roman Anthony, Son, Raphaela, and others that have the flexibility to move out into the outfield and play defensive reps. So, in exchange for Johan Oivo there, it’s a three for two trade here for in the favor of the Boston Red Sox getting a catcher, a left-handed pitcher and obviously the right-handed pitcher in Ovido in exchange for the password and a right-handed pitcher who is in the single A department or the single A level, if you will, down in the minor leagues. Overall, I don’t hate this trade. If you look at this overall, the year-by-year progression for Oedo, he was dealing with an injury. He came back from Tommy John and it wasn’t just the Tommy John he was dealing with in the process of healing from that Tommy John and rehabbing. He was dealing with a lat injury that progressed him even further. And he has returned and since returning he didn’t qualify on Baseball Savant this past year because well he only played in nine games and he only pitched in 46 innings but in doing so he was able to strike out a lot. He was able to create a lot of whiff on swing and misses and he didn’t walk a whole lot. It won’t say he was the top of the tier, if you will, and wasn’t walking anybody because there were some walks there about two to one average in the sense of a strikeout to walk ratio. But the extension numbers, he did qualify as he was in the top 96 percentile of the league, which is great to see. But then you look expected batting average, average exit velocity, whiff percentage, barrel percentage, and hard hit percentage. All of them, at least before things could actually qualify, because he didn’t qualify because of the lack of innings pitched. they were showing he would be above league average in those categories. And if you date date back to 2022 before the injuries took place, Aviedo was pretty damn good in the underlying metrics weren’t phenomenal, but a lot of things above league average, which is really good to see. Ground ball percentage, above league average, as well as barrel percentage, average exit velocity, fast ball vo, expected batting average, and the expected ERA, which are great things to see. And it looks like he has the pieces to go out there and continue to progress. If you look at this last year’s numbers, a legit five pitch mix, four seam slider sitting right around 95 and a half, 96 miles per hour. Rounding it out with a slider, sinker, change up, and a curveball. Not throwing the change up all that much, as well as the sinker. But again, they are useful pitches that we even saw on display this past year against the Boston Red Sox in Fenway. Overall, a very interesting trade. And this is Craig Brezlo doing what Craig Brelo does. Despite all the big names that the Red Sox are in connections with based off speculation and rumors, he goes the complete and total opposite direction. No one saw Sunny Gray. He went out there and acquired him. No one saw Johan Oedo. He went out there and acquired him. And I can’t really knock him for it. 26 years of age, a lot of playing time out in front of him, including two years of team control outside of this last season that was just completed. This is an interesting trade. As well as the pitch mix and the overall abilities that Aedo maintains, it seems like this is going to be something the Red Sox could really lean on going forward as a number four, a number five, and possibly even a number six guy in the starting rotation if things really pan out. And there is a bit of depth added to this starting rotation. I think this is strictly a piece of depth that the Red Sox are going to lean on and hope that Johan continues to progress and inside this Red Sox organization playing alongside guys like Crochet and Beo. if he’s still a part of the team, he’s going to be able to get better. He’s still very, very young. Obviously, Crochet is 26. Beo’s 26 now. Johan is 26 as well. A younger core in the starting rotation. Another right-handered right-hander who can throw 95 plus miles per hour. So, the up upper VO is there with Johan. And I think this is promising. I’m not going to sit here and say he’s in the works for a Sai Young type season, but I think there’s a lot of upside and potential here with Johan in this Red Sox starting rotation. Let me know down below what are your overall thoughts and opinions on this trade from the Red Sox and Craig Brezlo. Are you against it? Are you entirely just distraught with the idea that the Red Sox are probably done in the starting pitching department for this part of the offseason? And now they are probably going to fully focus their attention on the bats. Peter Alonzo, Kyle Schwarver, Alex Bregman, uh Bo Bashette, the list goes on and on of possible suitors for the Red Sox. It seems like the starting pitching conversation has come to a close. They went out there and acquired two guys. Neither of them know anyone wants the label as a number two, but there’s a lot of potential and it seems like there’s a lot of upside to both of these names. I’m okay with it. I’m not I keep I’m indifferent to really be honest with you guys. The more I think about it, the more I’m trying to sell myself on the idea that this young 26-year-old is going to fit in and he’s going to be able to really flourish in the starting rotation as he’s not going to be the number one guy. I don’t think it’s an overpay by the Red Sox. Garcia was being talked about in a lot of conversations and what we saw on the major league level in a very very very small sample size. It didn’t seem like he was going to have an opportunity, especially with the amount of talent and just the overall amount of assets they have available to play in the outfield in Boston. it seemed like the smartest decision to go out there and trade him for as many goods as they can get. And again, getting three players back in exchange for two and really one in the sense of it’s one single A guy and one guy who has been in AAA with monster numbers, but again in the major leagues, a very small sample size, not really performing. I think it’s a good trade for the Red Sox. I hope they continue to be active in this off season and go out there and acquire a bigname bat to really round out this offseason. Again, let me know down below your overall thoughts and opinions on this move, and I will see you guys on the next episode of Red Sox Digest.

Let’s go Sox, I’m so ready for baseball to start again
I definitely want what you’re smoking
A top 100 prospect for a 4-5 or possibly 6. Nahhh.
As a Pirates fan, how were we robbed? The pitching we do have. Yeah, he isnt, or wasn't a part of it.
Oviedo is a wild card. Too early to tell who won this one. Minor chess move. more coming.
Robbed? That isn’t robbery. That’s Boston getting screwed. They are even a number 5. 2 million for depth is a lot of money. We are back to Chaim bargain shopping.
Breslow = King of the what if, maybe and who knows trades !
I disagree that done with starting pitching. I think that if Bayo is on the table, then they have to get another picture back. I think both Duran and now I think Bello is on the table now in a deal
Sorry, dude this video the Pirates did not get robbed. I don’t understand you’re thinking perhaps you should do a little bit more research.
This is a depth move for a middle reliever or possible starter for the Sox. They obviously view Campbell as a better long term OF vs Garcia.
Craig breslow shopping at Dollar tree again. Idk how this is robbing the pirates by any stretch of the imagination
