[Passan] Trade news: The Boston Red Sox are acquiring right-hander Johan Oviedo in a deal that will send outfielder Jhostynxon Garcia back to the Pittsburgh Pirates, sources tell ESPN. In total, it’s a five-player trade.

  1. Feels like a really solid pick up for the Sox with their pitching dev

Oviedo always seems like he’s got the stuff to be really good

  2. No top 30 prospects involved unless I’m mistaken. So most likely boils down to Oviedo for Garcia.

Not a bad move for either side, but can’t be the biggest bat the Pirates get or the biggest arm the Red Sox get.

  3. Acquiring middle-of-the road pitchers doesn’t seem exciting until you remember that the Red Sox used their 15th starting pitcher of the season (give or take a few) to start a playoff elimination game against the Yankees last season.

  4. I really like Oviedo and am sad to see him go, but this is the exact kind of deal the Pirates should be making. Really nice swap by Cherington here.

Garcia is a top-100 prospect in some lists and really offers some nice power/defense upside as an OFer. To get that for a #4 SP when you’re really deep with SPs is really good.

  5. Huge for Garcia; should have a clear path to breaking camp in Pittsburgh. Boston doing right by him.

  6. This feels like an overpay for Boston, no? I know The Password has no path but they couldn’t use him in a package for someone better?

  7. This is the highest Scrabble scoring trade since Marc Rzepczynski was traded for Max Schrock

    (probably)

  8. In this situation, I think both teams got better. We were calling for this trade at the deadline last year. Excited for Reynolds, Cruz and Garcia in OF

  9. I like Oviedo a lot. He’s a decent arm. I’ll always be a huge fan of the guy and hope he sticks in the majors.

In 2022, the Cards made a rare trip to Canada to play the Jays. This is post-Covid, and players had to be vaxxed to get across the border. Johan Oviedo at the same time was having visa issues that had him in jeopardy of missing the trip. He went through all kinds of hoops and extra travel and shit to rectify the visa situation, and was able to make it to Toronto.

He was a fringe roster guy at the time, but did everything in his power to remain a possible contributor by getting to travel for that series. Contrast his stance with that of our 2 star players, Goldschmidt and Arenado. Both refused to get vaxxed, because of COURSE they did. They subsequently didn’t make the trip to Canada. Considering those were our 2 “stars” at the time, I was embarrassed as a fan of the team. They both looked like idiots, and they definitely didn’t look like fucking “winners”. We then choked in October and the franchise hasn’t been the same since.

Good luck, Johan! Stay healthy and stay in the majors, sir!

  10. My anger went through the roof until I got to the last word and neither Paul nor Skenes was in the post.
