  1. My late grandfather’s favorite ballplayer.

A two-time American League MVP (1928, 1934) and two-time All-Star (1934, 1935), Cochrane won three World Series and five pennants. His career ended abruptly in 1937 after a pitched ball hit his head, nearly killing him.

The Tigers honored him by renaming National Avenue (behind the third-base stands of the old Tiger Stadium) Cochrane Avenue.

  2. The Florida Marlins must have read Mack’s playbook on how to destroy a winning franchise.

  3. There’s a (possibly apocryphal) story that Mack once said he’d prefer to have a team start out strong but finish fourth, rather than win the pennant. That way, the fans would keep attending the games through the season and he wouldn’t have to pay his players bonuses for winning the championship.
