Uh, Red Wings lose six to five in a shootout to the Columbus Blue Jackets. We’ll obviously break the whole game down for you on this one. But before we get to that, I got to let you guys know that today’s episode is brought to you by Game Time. Download the Game Time app, create an account, and use code lockdown NHL for $20 off your first purchase. Okay, Scotty. Um, this is a game and and we all obviously still have our our common structure. This is a game where we didn’t really talk a whole heck of a lot before we hit record because we are just like there’s so much from this game to break down that it’s almost better served to come on here and just kind of let it out kind of riff. Like I think we both are on the same page. we usually are. We will keep to our structure. When it comes to primary storylines as a Kickstarter to get us on our monologues and discussion, where do you want to begin? To be honest, I kind of Did you win the tree, the Christmas tree uh uh standoff? Oh, is this your first time seeing it? Yeah, I haven’t seen I mean I I was like dead for three days, so yeah, I haven’t seen it. Uh yeah, yes and no. I mean, it’s only like three feet tall as you can see if you’re looking on YouTube in the background. Uh my sister-in-law had one and she lent it to me. Well, she gave it to me and then my grandma just so happened when we were looking for Christmas decorations. She just so happened to have a only red string of lights, which was insane coincidence. And then my sister gave me uh a bunch of ornaments that are red and silver to put on the tree. It’s a collaborative effort for me to have a three-foot tree way back in the background. It’s awesome. Well, I know there was Yeah. some conversations between you and the misses about the the uh the value of the tree, if you will. So, I’m glad that you uh you you got your tree. I think it’s the perfect compromise. That little three-foot one. Fair enough. Fair enough. Um, I think uh still have a cough drop in. I still feel like I’m dying, but I I think the biggest storyline in this game is honestly just the lack of goalending by either team. Like I don’t know how it can be anything but that. There were 10 goals scored before the shootout. Like I I it is I mean you you already kind of mentioned it just in the first you know minute and a half of the show but like this is becoming a level of concern that I I’m not sure I I mean I was like one of the more vocally pessimistic outspoken I guess not really like postgibson trade as much, but like going into the off season was very outspoken about how I wanted reinforcements in net. I I I you know, we needed something. We can’t just rely on Kosa in 2025, blah blah blah blah blah. I I I mean, this has been a complete disaster. And that obviously starts and ends with Gibson, but then that leaks over into Talbot because he has to play much more than he should be playing at almost 40 years old. So like it. Yeah, man. Like I I don’t know how really I mean any of the games as of late, the last few, but you know, going forward there’s this is great. Like the Wings are are getting shot attempts and and they’re uh they’re finally finding the back of the net with those attempts and that’s awesome. We were kind of waiting for that seal to break. Excuse me. But this is still like the it hasn’t resulted in a a large winning streak because they cannot keep the puck out of their own net now. And they I don’t know what you do, I guess, is my and maybe that’s like an off- conversation more so than a game recap. We can focus on, you know, this 60 minutes specifically a little bit more. But like I I I I I think that it’s like your hand is hovering over the panic button if it isn’t already smashing it. Yeah. I mean, okay, so first of all, we’re starting with the negative very clearly. Wasn’t really sure what direction we’d come out of the the I No, I’m not I’m not faulting you for it, but if they ended up winning the shootout, I probably wouldn’t have, but ultimately this is you know, you get a loser point to care, right? You’ve never said anything bad about the loser point, by the I’ve never the You’re right. Like, you’re spot on. This was a game that was I think I texted you. I’m both proud and annoyed at this hockey team because I’m so very proud of the way that they battled back and stayed with it. And I mean, they’ve lost what, six of the last eight, but are actually also riding a three-game point streak. So, it’s kind of how you position yourself and look at it. Um, glass half full, glass or glass half empty where they’re turning it around. They’re starting to get points, but also you’re right, like the they deserved a better outcome in this hockey game than they got. And the reason they lost because and I I hate to say it, but it was Cam Talbot in this hockey game. And I tweeted it out during the hockey game. I said Gibson and Talbot are by no means 100% to blame for the struggles in in stopping preventing goals. And Kosa is by no means a savior. he will struggle or not he will struggle struggle he just he won’t come in and be the savior that they need but at what point do you stop banging your head against the wall and at least see what Kosa can provide you like Kosa’s going to come up and yes he has a 941 save percentage but Carter Gillander has a 930 save percentage and he’s an ECHL goalie the Grand Rapids Griffins team is stacked it’s helping inflate his numbers I still think Kos is very good and he’s part of the part of the solution there I don’t think he’s just riding the coattails but he’s also well insulated and he won’t be the same here in Detroit. So, just like be prepared for that if you do say that. But at the same time, I am with you where it’s like I’m smashing the panic button because Gibson has been for all intents and purposes poor, very poor, underwhelming to say the least. The nice adjectives to use to describe it throughout the season, maybe one or two solid starts. Talbot was holding things together for a while, but now he’s come back down to earth. He allowed three or four goals in this game that he just got beat. You know, the Ivan Prov shot was just a shot from the top of the circle that went between his legs. Kel Marenko’s power play goal was just a shot that he had a they said that Cider may have partially screened him. Again, didn’t leave the ice right underneath his legs. Uh you look at the Adam Fantili power play goal where it was again guy like Gibson the game before was a short side shot that he just got beat over the glove in the shootout the second shootout goal he got frozen like he Cam Talbbit who has had a lot of good games for Detroit this season had had a really really rough game and it’s been a couple honestly in a row for him that now I’m to the point I’m like well now you don’t have either goalie and yeah maybe one will get hot that happens right guys get hot and cold but neither have really hot hot since the start of the season that you know that’d be great and even if it is a shortterm thing like at at least but you can’t bank on that. You can’t like hold your breath and cross your fingers and be like okay like we just need one of them to get hot at some point. you you need a sustained level of consistent production in that and you have zero evidence that either of these guys can do that over 82, right? And like again, it’s not 100% their fault. The Red Wings play piss poor defense in front of them. like the but you have one of the bottom five worst save percentages as a team in the league and goalending is in my part at least a 60 to 75% of that obviously not clearing out the net front uh to allow constant deflections not clearing out the rebound I’m looking at you Nate Danielson on Kent Johnson’s goal Talbot made the save that rebound sat there and Danielson didn’t have his guy covered and Johnson came in and bound hand Ben Sherat clearing the puck off the line and then two seconds later flicking it back and finding the back of the net. Dude, and like that’s what I’m talking about. Like obviously the Red Wings don’t play good defensively in front of them, but the Red Wings goending at no point has been able to bail Detroit out except for obviously a few games here or there. Like you look at the Talbot’s game against Tampa to start and then he runs out of gas like we run out of gas. Yeah. So, it’s there’s a lot of good in this game, too, and we’ll talk about it, but they lost the game and that is a primary reason why, and it’s why I’m super annoyed because again, they goalie got pulled and they blew the lead again and it was a another deflected shot that just bounced off bodies. You know, Albert Johansson again didn’t clear the net front. He didn’t even take the guy. So, it’s just it’s more than just the goalending, but a lot of it is the goalending. you know, you have an option down in Grand Rapids that I’m sorry, I know some people believe that, you know, you don’t want to ruin the kid’s confidence and I get that, but like bring him up for a test drive at some point, right? Hey, he’s been down there for a minute now. Okay. Like I And when he’s been healthy this year, he’s been pretty good down there, too. I like at some point you have to prioritize putting the best NHL team on the ice every single night, man. Like at at some point that has to be the priority. And they they proved that that could be the priority with every other young prospect in the organization. All the other ones got thrown into the fire. ASP, MBN, right? like they they Danielson, they just got Finny, a seventh round pick. They they got thrown in there with no regard for their development because it made the team better. It’s probably time to at least consider doing that in net as well. You got to take him for a test drive at some point. Like I I get it. I I understand you don’t want to ruin a young goalie’s confidence, but it’s also it’s been four years, right? Like he was drafted in 2021. You can send him back down. Who cares, right? All right, Scotty, we got to go to a break. When we return, we will talk a little bit about the positives from the hockey game. Sardings did come back from two separate deficits to tie this game up. So, stay tuned to segment two of Lockdown Red Wings. The World Cup is coming back to North America for the first time since 1994. And with 48 teams, for the first time ever, it’s going to be massive. Swipe, tap, ticket, go. All right, Scotty, we we got the bad out of the way first. If you’re ready, let’s pivot a little bit to talk about the positives from this game. And that was two games in a row offense explosion. They scored five against the Boston Bruins. They score five again against the Columbus Blue Jackets. They finally start fight finding the back of the net. And the Red Wings, I won’t say they’re it wasn’t like they dominated the game. Like this was a game of exchanging chances. Both teams just oddman rushes and breakaways. And the Red Wings had a ton in this game, which is something that we’ve seen time and time again. I think the Red Wings with league average goalending and even a little bit better finishing with all the chances they had could have blown this game out of the water. And well, if they had both of those things, they have the best record in the NHL, brother. I Dude, I don’t know if you saw Jay Fresh’s chart the other day, but like their expected goal differential versus their actual is it’s obscene. I’m like not that’s like kind of kidding, but like not really. Like maybe not the best record in the NHL, but they would be one of the better teams in the NHL if they even had those two things. Yeah. So, it on one hand like I I’m I talked about how I was annoyed because goalending continues to be a problem. It’s the reason they lost this hockey game and like lost you an extra point in a very tight Eastern Conference. But on the same token, they were down three to one because of goalending. They came back and tied it three to three. They were down four to three because of goalending. They came back and tied it and even took the lead in the third period because of how potent their offense was in this game. You know, obviously the power play went three for four and they were talking about it before the power play had I think they said like one for the last 10. So that got back right on the right track. Uh a great tic-tac-toe play between Raymond Cider and then Larkin obviously getting the goal. Cider with the the pass shot pass down the pipe. Larkin was able to deflect it. His 15th goal of the season. That assist was Morris. How many games have we played? 28 now. Beauty. 15 goals in 28 games. Over half a goal a game. Beauty. Over half a goal a game. Mort Cider with the primary assist on that. By the way, it’s his 200th career point. Yeah. Yeah. And he ended up getting another assist in this one as well. Uh Lucas Raymond scored the next power play goal. Uh again, just a really nice and that was that was such a huge moment, too, because Red Wings get that double minor penalty. You know, their power play was buzzing. They’re down three to one because goalending and defensive lapses. Lucas Raymond is very good. That was just a 10th goal of the season. Fair. I meant like he took that big hit in overtime. That’s what I meant. But Oh, I thought you were being sarcastic. But like you’re right. He is good. He is He is good at hockey. I agree. I I hope so. I I I’ve seen I haven’t seen anything like postgame or like online about so I’m assuming that he’s fine but he did he was slow to get up there and took that big hit. Yeah. Yeah. He might have just been a little Yeah. Shaken up. Happens a lot. We haven’t heard anything about it. I’m I’m just going to ignore it and pretend that everything way to knock me off my stride, Scotty. I know that’s that’s my fault. We’re talking about how great Lucas Raymond was at hockey cuz he scored that power play goal and we’re right back. Uh, Axel Sani Pelico, Patrick Kane on the assist. James Van Redike continues his hot streak. What is He’s got five goals. I think four of them are in like the last six games and off of a very nice patient patience from Andrew Cop on the primary assist that just sent it to the net front. And that double minor penalty like getting that first goal was so vital. You get that first goal in the first two minutes. Now you have a full power play to tie it. And their power play was excellent in this hockey game. and they capitalized on those issues because they were not getting out of their own way defensively and in net. So that was huge to tie it. And then of course they were pouring the pressure all third period. Like I was watching the game and I was like holy holy crap. Like I there if they don’t tie it it’s going to be it’s going to be real feels bad moment because they’ve been playing so well. And then Patrick Kane finally breaks his gets off his schneide scores to tie it. Yeah. And then Debrink a couple minutes later does his little he loves it. Cut across the middle, shoot across the grain and uh makes it a 5-4 game. And at that time you’re like, they might actually sneak away with this win. And then obviously we know what happened. That move that CD does is all I can do in Chell by the way. That’s it. That’s That’s like my only It’s that or like the the crease to like circle to circle like the the two-on-one break one-time obviously is a classic cheat code, but like the I I’m so bad at the game. It that’s literally what I look like playing Charles like, “Oh, I’m just going to enter the zone and then break over to the center of the ice here and let it rip.” And Cat is in the NHL doing it. So, um and you know, has like multiple 40 goal seasons, so clearly it works for him. Um, yeah, man. It it is it is refreshing to see the goal scoring as of late. It is refreshing. It’s nice to just see that. I mean, we talked about it for a while, like waiting for that seal to kind of break. There’s still a lot more season left, right? I’m not saying we’re all just like out of the woods and everything’s going to be great, you know, goalcoring wise from here on out, but it does give you a little bit of reassurance at least that like, okay, they they have it within them that it is it is possible. Yes. And that’s why like it’s both you’re proud and annoyed because they didn’t they didn’t wallow in their misery down 3-1 after a couple bad goals. They fought back. They battled back. They tied it. Offense was there. Of course to note offense came from the again the usual suspects Larkin Raymond Dbrinket Cat Kane plus JVR who apparently isn’t in that bunch at these last few games. Yeah, I don’t need to see JVR first out in the shootout ever again though. I’m good on that. Yeah, I I un I understood the decision because of the fact that like he’s been hot, but like I don’t you have I I didn’t say I agree with it. I understand it. I understand thinking you don’t agree with that. He might skate faster than him. Debatable, but uh we have Patrick Kane, Dylan Larkin, Lucas Raymond, Alex Debrink to lead the shootout. Why are we leading with JVR despite the fact that he’s hot? Like respect like respect again. He’s he’s been great lately. We we’ll absolutely take it. But I like I don’t know. That felt like a wild decision to me. Right. I mean, I think JVR would maybe in private conversation, right? He’s not going to pass up on the opportunity. I’m sure he was like, “Yeah, sure.” Yeah. No, it’s like Yeah. Yeah. Whatever. Um, anyways, yes, that was that was awesome to see, which also made the blown lead late again even more frustrating. Which is why, like I said in the short that recorded out the game, you saw the best and the worst from this team on in the same game. like the the offensive production, tons of shots, tons of great opportunities, oddman rushes in which they actually converted on them in this game, but just the worst of them, which is defensive lapses and poor goalending. And ultimately, it cost you an extra point, which, you know, again, it depends on how you look at it. Like, I I’m not overly upset at the game just because of how hard they fought, but I am still annoyed at the fact that that that was a win that they should have had. They deserved a much better outcome than they got for sure. for sure. Well, I’ll probably end that there. We can move on to specific notable performers, Scotty, in segment three and then do a short preview of the Seattle Kraken. So, stay tuned with Lockdown Red Wings. Uh, you know, I kind of shotguned out the goal scorers for the Wings when talking about the way they came back in this hockey game and why that was something that, you know, reassured me going forward about them. Do you want to take any time to talk any about in any individual players or even lines from this hockey game? Um, I I mean, the only like non-goalcorers that I really want to highlight, uh, I do want to give some flowers to Finny. Uh I I thought that his um effort and defense as a forward was apparent in this game. He had one shift specifically in the first period, man, where he just it was poke, win a quarter battle, poke, win a corner battle. Like he he had like three in a row in one shift uh in a wings attempt to keep the puck in the offensive zone. Um, so I I just and like we know that he plays that way and and that that’s why he’s a great addition to that line, but I thought it was kind of apparent especially in the first half of this game. Yeah. And I will EMTT Finny obviously is one of them. I’m going to of course hand the flowers out to Morid Cider already mentioned he had the two assists in this game career point 200 and 2011. I have a social graphic that I’m going to make probably tomorrow. Um, but I’ll give you a little taste of it now. For instance, Scotty, uh, Morid Cider, I think, is gonna get Norris consideration this season. Not saying he’s gonna finish in the top three, not saying he’s going to win, but he has been absolutely unreal. And I’m hoping that his his data updated, but amongst defenseman with at least 500 minutes played because he crossed that he was at 499 minutes coming into today, which is why I was waiting for this game to happen. Uh Morett Cider ranks second in the NHL amongst defenseman without with at least 500 minutes played. That’s only 16 defenseman. So to give you a taste of how much he plays, there’s only 16 defensemen who have played at least 500 minutes right now in the league. He is second amongst them at five on five in shot attempt share. He is first amongst them in shot share. Uh he is fourth in goal share. So that’s goals for versus goals against. And his expected goal share, Scotty, is second in a league. So amongst the the elite defenseman, the top 16 in minutes so far this season, he is top four minimum in every category, if not two or one of those categories. And when you take the defenseman on this list and you put them on my player usage chart and plot where they play, you know, I love my player usage chart. And this might not be up to date because I know the Dober hockey thing takes time to update as my cat comes in here and meows at me. I don’t know if you can hear that. Honestly deserved. Yeah, she’s yelling at me. I’m actually doing this in real time, so apologies. I’m trying to see if it updated. probably didn’t update right away. Um, okay. So, it’s updated to us yesterday. So, let me share my screen. Am amongst those defenseman, Scotty, this is where he gets his deployments. Obviously, to the left of the Y-axis or on the left hand side of the uh on the X- axis is defensive zone deployments more than offensive zone deployments. I’ve showed this graph before. If you’ve listened, you know what I’m talking about. That’s the dober frozen tools um deployment chart. And then the more north you are, the tougher competition you fight face. So he gets bulk defensive zone deployments in place against tougher competition more frequently than every other defenseman on this list. You see Zach Rinsky, you see Philip Peronic, you see Ivan Proarov, Jonas Broaddin, and he dominates in those minutes. So, not only is he on a almost 60point pace, playing bulk defensive zone deployments, playing tougher minutes than everybody else on this list. He he he’s one of the best in that in each of those categories that I’ve stated. Corsy, expected goals, actual goals, and actual shots. He’s on top of playing power play one and power penalty kill. He is he should get Norris consideration this season. Even if he doesn’t win, even if he doesn’t finish in the top three, he should be getting votes this year. I mean, I’m down. I’m down. Well, uh, it’s always interesting to follow, um, you know, awards because there’s always, you know, just es and flows and whatnot throughout the year, right? It’s still early in the season and it should, you should get it. I I agree. But everything we’ve seen from Morts Cider would indicate that he probably will continue at a pretty good clip all season long because he’s been probably honestly he’s been the most consistent Red Wing since he’s joined. Like he obviously goes through es and flows as well, but you know his cold streaks aren’t as noticeable as other players and part of it is he’s a defenseman not a forward but he’s he’s dominant top 20 defenseman in the league. Yeah, agreed. All right, there’s that. Second line was great in this hockey game, Scotty. And we’ve dogged on the second line a little bit here and there and mostly deserved because there is a lot of instances where they have struggled in the offensive zone. Um, and especially defensive zone to maintain possession. Ever since they’ve got Andrew Cop, I thought they’ve been very good. And obviously, we saw more of that in this game. We know Debrink and Kane scored. Cop got an assist on the power play. Um, very good game from the second line, I thought. Yeah, I agree. And and I mean that’s uh like saying excuse me that that’s important is obviously kind of like a no dust statement, but um you know like we’ve just talked a lot throughout the year about getting production from outside of like the four, you know, big point producers, etc., etc. Um so having really any, you know, amount of depth in production is a win. I don’t really care if it’s the fourth line or the second line at this point. If they get any solid performances from outside of the top line, I’m going to be a happy camper. And I mean, like talking if we’re talking purely offensively, I thought all four lines like had moments where they looked strong. Man, I I really thought Soderblam was going to score on the wraparound in the first. I like a wraparound with with a 67 forward feels like, you know, you got the upper hand there. But what’ you say? 68 Scott. 68. Scott, I get it right. Uh, okay. Come on, man. Jesus. Unacceptable. Are you 5’8? I’m 5’8 and 3/4ers. So, we round up. I I learned in school that when you get to 0.5, you round up. So, I’m 5’9. But you don’t have hair to like is that have you measured yourself since going bald? I guess is my question. Uh, I went to the doctor earlier this year. So, okay. They I don’t think they told me I had lost height. So, Okay. No, I just didn’t know if that was like uh like you were I was wearing my platform. There’s like half an inch of hair there or whatever. Like that’s all notably Elmer Soderblum and Axel Sanding Pelica didn’t play much the last uh half of the third after around the last TV timeout. They didn’t really play much more. Uh I understand why, you know, trying to protect one lead, especially with ASP. We’ve talked about it before. Yeah. But he did pick up an assist in this game ASP. So, yeah, I thought he looked great on the power play. Yeah, he’s he’s looking a little bit more comfortable. His his mistakes and gaffs aren’t as frequent as they were. He’s starting to settle in a little bit, but I still get like why you wouldn’t play him with five. Yeah. Yeah. I the power play is just like he he really I thought in this game kind of I don’t know like more so than any other game in his career up to this point. Like you really saw like oh like he’s he could be a facilitator on the blue line. He really was moving the puck really really well on uh on the power play for sure. And then uh did you see Michael Rasmusen? Yeah. Like avoid a check with speed down the the wing and then make a power move to the net. Yeah. Where what who is this guy? Where has this guy been the last season and a half? Respect, dude. He’s been cra he’s been crazy lately. I don’t know what’s been going on. I guess getting benched for two or three straight games will uh light a fire under your butt. Fire you up. Yeah. Uh yeah. I mean that about does it again. It was a hot and cold game from defensively. Goending wise it was terrible. Offensively it was incredible. Uh they got a point out of it. Should have probably had two, but you know they they’re on a three-game point streak but they’ve also lost six of the last eight. Depends on how you want to look at it right now. Yeah. Yeah. It’s also it’s kind of just like the way that Columbus has played over the last two seasons, too. Um, so, you know, you you don’t ever want to, especially on the road, you know, play into the other team’s style, if you will, and I feel like the Wings kind of found themselves caught in a situation like that in this one. So, sorry, it’s eight of the last 10 they’ve lost. Let’s let’s get it right. Apologies. But also a three-game point streak. So, in a way, they are kind of correcting. It is what it is. Goending is still bad. Uh they play Kraken on Saturday. That is of course going to be a 10:00 start for the Detroit Red Wings. The Kraken are off to a somewhat decent season so far. They’re fifth in the Pacific Division, 11, seven, and six. Kind of perfectly built to be a mid team. Uh but the Red Wings just lost to a mid team. So obviously can’t take anything for granted right now. They don’t score a lot of goals. Their points leader is Jaden Schwarz with 15 points in 23 games. and it goes down from there. Um, but they’re getting much better goalending this year. Philip Grubower, Joey Dardert, who, you know, we’ve already seen Seattle once and, uh, Matt Murray all have over 900 save percentages on the season so far. Uh, Dard, Matt Murray in the big 2020. I think we decided it was Dord. Uh, Dord has a 902. He’s been playing the bulk of the games, 16. I think Matt Murray’s been hurt most of the season to be honest with you. Yes. Yeah. So, um, yeah, I mean, we’ve already seen them once before and and not too long ago. So, um, not uh not not a ton to say that we haven’t already, but um, yeah, I mean, they’re they still have like some young exciting players. They’re just kind of waiting for not even waiting, they’re trying to to get the offensive side of the puck to click for sure. Um, I just watched, who did they play? Dallas, maybe? I just watched a Kraken game last weekend. Um it was like one of the last games on the night. Um I think it was I feel like it was Dallas. And yeah, like they I mean they again we’ve seen them already like they they move the puck well and they they suffocate defensively pretty decently. It’s just they you know Baneer’s production is not what it was once believed to be, especially after his rookie year. Um etc. So, I I do want to sort of kind of redact a little bit what I had said a moment ago across the season. Goalending has been very good for Seattle. Uh, but they are currently riding a three-game losing streak. It’s about to be four as as of recording this they were losing nine to three to the Edmonton Oilers. And the game before that they lost four to nothing. Uh, yeah. McDavid has a Hattie. So, he might have all nine goals in that game. I don’t know. He might have nine points, but he he only has three goals at the moment. Yes, let me I I gotta I gotta click on this game really quick. Okay. No, he has Oh, well, this is So, the last update I got was when Okay, he has four points. Yeah, he has four points and three of them are goals. Yes. Uh Matt Seavoy also has two goals in this hockey game. So it uh so maybe across the season their goalending has been pretty good. Um but in this short sample size that is what’s going to be a four-game losing streak. Uh it doesn’t seem like they’ve been playing very good defensively. So this is good for the Red Wings as this is a you know it’s a long road trip. It’s a six-game road trip but you’re playing teams that are struggling. Seattle’s currently struggling about to be a four game losing streak. Uh the Vancouver Canucks Calgary Flames two of the worst teams in the league. I think Calgary Flames are now the worst team in the league after uh you know the Red Wings lost to Nashville who at the time were the worst team in the league. And then you play Chicago on this road trip as well. And you do play Edmonton who is picking up speed a little bit. They always have slow starts. So a lot of winnable games on this road trip despite it being a long west coast road swing. So important for the Red Wings to use this road swing to kind of get things right. word. All right. Well, Scotty, let’s uh wrap it up. Any final thoughts? We ball. We do ball. We’ll be back with a new episode on Monday. Same time, same place. It’s your team every day. Go Lions.

Pride and disappointment. The Red Wings overcome two seperate defecits and take a 3rd period lead, showing a ton of heart. But, Cam Talbot struggled in net, continuing to exacerbate Detroit’s goalie woes as the Blue Jackets win in the shootout. Moritz Seider has 200 career points. #LGRW

  1. As a goalie , I can tell you that bringing ossa with this defensive core , as well as the team defense structure could not only ruin his confidence , it could be permanent and ruin his entire career. I can't give you names right now. But I know there were several goalies like this.Just look at Philadelphia. They did that to a lot of good promising goalies. Now, none of them are in the league. Cossa is the hottest goalies in the league right now in the AHL. Let him have NO doubts how good he is by kicking butt down there . Then the Wings can make a move etc ; and bring him in with a head of steam. Just like Minnesota. We need to make a move….
..All right , but to get a good elite defenseman. Bium would certainly help us. However, he's probably out for the year. (At least I guess he is. I haven't seen him since training camp and I thought he was going to make the team.). Frankly, I don't think Talbot played that bad.He just couldn't see the puck (as usual), because there were 😮 like , four or five guys standing in front of him (blocking his vew as usual). Many of them were our own players.

  2. One great thing , no one seems to be talking much about is that van reams d*** , it's really coming on. Missing the preceding is very detrimental to most players. He's finally playing the way that I thought he would. …and Thank goodness !

  3. Their biggest problem (outside of abysmal goaltending) is closing out a game. They are terrible at fighting against an aggressive forecheck, which is what happens in every one goal game and why they keep losing in OT/SO.

Early in the season they were closing them out well. Wrangling the puck, flipping it high out to center ice and getting pressure on the puck retriever or recovering the puck in the neutral zone and hitting the empty net.

Watch them now and they are chipping it up the boards every time and just gifting the opposing D a free reset inside our zone. We chip it up the boards, the D grabs it, D to D pass, shot from the point, deflection or rebound, tie game.

If they don't have time to corral the puck and get a good shot down the ice, they need to eat it along the boards and kill seconds off the clock.

  4. I noticed Ed was not passing the puck to Seider last night. He would seem to go for the lower percentage pass instead of passing off to Seider. I found that interesting.

  5. The goaltending is not the problem, it's the symptom of the larger problem that no one engages defensively beyond Seider and sometimes Ed.

  6. they scored the 5th goal and then stood still in their own zone for 4 minutes. i want to blame talbot, but they had a chance to win despite that and decided to stand around and wait to see if Columbus would win instead of playing the game

  7. First – no goalie NO CUP 2nd Charot must GO NOW I don't care who anyone! Every time something bad happens there he is lazy and careless with puck .now the game 3 minutes left and I said ok let's see if we can shut this down now it was 5-3 and there is CHAROT ot and there is CHAROT . Good thing is we know we can win that not the question. We can score 7 game .but we all know no D no CUP no goalie NO CUP. Plain and simple.

  8. the current Red Wings goalies are both sitting at an .800 GAA, which is historically abysmal for the NHL. Meanwhile, Sebastian Cossa is lighting up the minors as he’s showing the consistency, reflexes, and composure that you would hope to see at the NHL level. If the team wants a real shot at stabilizing their net, it’s hard to ignore a talent like Cossa who is already performing at a pace that suggests he could make a major impact right away. Why keep struggling with current options when a promising solution is ready to step in? Talbot was shakey last night, but he is also old. Cossa will not be a hero in net for future, no doubt, he could be another Howard, but what is the worse that can happen?

  9. The cat move is my go-to as well. My buddy who is good at chel asked me “why do you do that” and I can only say “idk man it works”

  10. What are your guys thoughts on Pellikka though. Should he go back down for seasoning? 28 games played and a -15. I figured he would tear it up but his first season. As Scotty mentioned about Cossa, if he breaks, send him back down, if Pellikka regains stardom like he did for sweeden in minors, bring him back up. Kane also looks out of place out there, age is catching up. Andrew Copp eeks. I am also starting to look at Todd's coaching style and Yawney. Were they rushed to take over?

  11. Lot's of talk about the blueliners. Remember Troy Stecher? He was just picked up on the waiver wire by Toronto.
Since then he's helped stabilize their back end them and they have gotten better. They just completed a long road over .500
In 8 game with the Leafs he has more points than Kasper.
    all season
