Jordan Davis & More On Facing Los Angeles Chargers

losses and then won four straight. What learning experiences and takeaways can you take from that to um kind of help this team get back to where it wants to be? Um I think the biggest thing for us is just realizing that we’re capable of bouncing back and capable of uh achieving more. Um those two losses back to back, you know, obviously it hurts, but you know, I think when we had time to learn and really settle down on it, we learned a lot about what we can fix. And it’s the same way going into this week. We know that we have a lot of fix and um you know, I think the mindset in there um I don’t know if y’all got a chance to really see practice, but the energy at practice was up today on both sides. I really loved it. Enjoyed it. Um and I think that’s just the feeling that we need to have is just we trending upwards and um you know, we just go in there Monday. We can’t think about the past. Obviously, you know, it’s things that we lost two back to back, but we have to look into the future and we have to do what we have to do and execute. That’s what we’re capable of. Energy up, of course, because of you. You’re always dancing out there. Ah. Ah, obviously Jaylen Carter out. Um, big big loss for this defense. What what does that do and how much shuffling will have to kind of go around to make up for what he brings to the table? Yeah, not much shuffling. Um, you know, we all hands on deck. That’s one mentality we have as a defensive line. Uh, I know the young guys are ready. We’ve been training them since they’ve been here for that. Um, and I just really excited to get game experience because the more game experience that they have, the more that they can play in these big time games and it won’t affect them as much. But, um, with the coaches that we have, I’m not concerned. Uh, you know, me and Mo is gonna step up and do our part and we have to make sure that we keep this thing rolling because, you know, um, you know, it’s obvious that, you know, we’re gonna be, you know, missing Jaylen, but at the end of the day, we just can’t wait to get him back and we have to keep working until then. We haven’t seen much of Tai so far this year. What have you seen behind the scenes that makes you think he’s ready? Practice reps, practice reps, um, going against ones offense, you know, just the reps that he’s getting against Landon, against Jordan, against Cam, you know, all those kind of compound to add up. And so, uh, when he gets his opportunity to go against, you know, former Eagles player, Mai Beckton, or, you know, somebody that’s on the Chargers line, we have full confidence in him that you can to go out there and execute. It’s more about the mindset that he has carrying out there and understanding that he is meant to be here. He is here for a reason. And it’s the same thing I went through as a rookie. You know, I kind of didn’t have a lot of experience going into this and, you know, looking at the offensive line, I was like, man, these guys got years of experience on me. But, as time goes on and the more experience that I have and more confidence, excuse me, execution breeds confidence. And um you know we just want to make sure that we execute first then the confidence comes. What was the uh messaging this week after you know the struggles against run defense against the Bears? What was the message? Technique. Technique. Um you know I think the Bears was a eye opener and it was kind of like Atlanta last year. Um just the things that they’re attacking us with and how they’re going to attack our defense cuz you know um you know it’s very few and far between that we’re going to get you know a lot of pressure straight up. You know it’s going to be a lot of side to side. They want to try to take us out of the equation. So, you know, we have to be prepared for that. You know, not every team is going to play like that. Not every team going to have a scheme like that, but when we do see those schemes, we have to make sure that we’re alert for them. And, uh, it’s a copycat league. So, for what we see this week, we might see next week or the week after that from another team. So, it’s just really just kind of being mindful and being aware of that, understanding that this is the way that they’re trying to attack us. And, you know, when those times come, we have to make sure that we execute and go with the plan. You mentioned Mai. Um, I’m sure you’ll be lined up over him a few times. Um, what’s that familiarity like with him for you? Uh, you know, I think about Mai as just a person and a player and, uh, you know, I really miss him dearly. You know, I’m not going to go out there and be like, I hate him, whatever. But, you know, um, you know, he’s a big guy. He’s a tall athlete. He has long arms. You know, he’s kind of a tackle in a guard spot. So, you know, that kind of throws a wrench in a lot of people’s plans. But um we just understand that, you know, the type of player that he is um his strengths and weaknesses and we have to go out there and we have to exploit that. But um I have nothing but good things to say about him. You know, that’s my dog. You know, anybody that’s been a part of this team or team last year, you know, they’re always going to be my dog cuz and even now cuz you know, those guys are good people, but you know, at the end of the day, we have a mission to do. We go out there and execute and you know, we’ll give, you know, our handshakes and hugs at the end of the game. Jordan, how does um Jaylen’s absence affect you personally? Yeah. Like does it change anything for how you play or you know what you do? I mean I know that my role is going to be bigger going into this game. You know I don’t have uh Jaylen to you know be right beside me but at the end of the day uh I know he’ll be there. You know you be in attendance but you know it’s just kind of different when you got your dog cuz that’s my dog. That’s my dog. And you know it just I feel a lot more it’s just when we got all hands on deck I’m at my most complete confidence cuz you know that’s everybody. Everybody. And uh everybody eats. That’s what we expect when we go into the game. Everybody on the defensive line we need expect to eat. And um you know, just not having them. It’s just kind of, you know, it’s kind of like a missing piece, you know. Um you always want to be loaded at every position, but at the end of the day, we have to go out there. We have to stand up for ourselves and we have to go out there and execute. And um I’m not worried about the execution part. You know, this is the team that we have is the mentality that we have. We go out there and execute every game. But, you know, it’s just going to be just, you know, for the two weeks or however long it takes for him to kick back and recover. Just going to be sad a little bit. Yeah. And you guys have I mean obviously you played two games without him and stuff but those were kind of like last minute type of things like just having a week to prepare like knowing that he’s not going to be there. Does that help at all? I mean I guess I really can’t say you know you know it’s like practice as usual for us but um you know we Hey young bull get out my young boy get out my interview. stop playing. But uh n like I was saying uh you know it’s just it’s practice practice as usual for us. Uh you know when he comes back and he’s recovering everything you know we just get back to business and we know the expectations outside of this building skyhigh always and despite losing Sue Street you see this team right now with eight wins top the NFC top of your division. How much do you still feel like despite the losses the season is right in front of you? Yeah, I mean our goal is to go one and 0 each week. You know, at the end of the day, uh you know, the record, whatever happens at the end of the season, we’re ready for it. Prepare for it. We just want to make sure that we have opportunity to play in the off uh in the playoffs. But that time comes, you know, each week is just one and0. One and0, we worry about it when the time comes, but at the end of the day, we cross that bridge when we get to it. Speaking of Jiad Campbell, the young Bull, as you talk, we were just talking to him about how this rookie year maybe hasn’t gone according to plan to him. How have you seen him maybe grow in that adversity? I understand the impact of having good vets in your room. Um, and you know, like my year, I’m sure everybody can attest to this was not according to the plan that I wanted, but you know, it takes time to learn. It takes time to understand the game and understand that, you know, the time that you’re spending now. You might not be seeing the field as much as you want to, but the reps that you’re taking, the reps that you’re watching are invaluable. The things that you’re learning from guys like Nico and Zach and even Troder, you know, those are invaluable. And I understand and I know he understands that and I know he’s learning and coach King’s doing an amazing job with him and uh when his time comes, we know he’s going to be ready. So, I’m not worried about that. Um we just have to go out there and take care of our business. Um you know, stop the little things shooting ourselves in the foot, things like that. And um just go out there and execute. That’s the biggest thing. What does the Chargers secondary specifically Duran James the veteran in this league, what’s the biggest challenge that they present? Um you know, they move Duran around a lot. you know, sometimes he’s at nickel, he’s at safety, he’s at linebacker. So, you know, you have to always um see where he at, what he’s doing. Uh he’s got that gets around to the ball and then they just, you know, they they rally to the ball. Well, um you know, they have the guys on the outside that are pretty good, pretty good that can get to the quarterback and things like that. And um just have to go out there and execute and just know where three is at at all times. What’s it feel like inside the locker room? Obviously, the outside talk can be loud, but what’s the feel as you head into a new week coming off those two, but obviously hoping to get better? Feel like it feel every week. Um, no, ain’t no panicking here. No overreacting here. That’s all outside. Devonte, we got kind of a closer look into how things operate on the sideline. There’s a miscommunication between you and a quarterback. Is that a pretty common occurrence that that when a play doesn’t go the way one person or the other expected? Yeah, that that’s how you make adjustments. you know, you can’t just go to the sideline, not discuss what happened. Um, so that’s part of us making an adjustment on what we wanted and um, you know, kind of corrected it after that. How much does that happen like during the course of a week, too, like when you guys are trying to get on the same page? Um, it happens probably a lot early in the week. You know, you putting the new game plan in, you know, you getting out there trying to get the reps against the different looks. And, you know, sometimes, um, you know, you get a look that you didn’t necessarily see. Um, you probably didn’t have time to get that look in practice and another day you get it. Um, so you know, it happens a lot, but that’s part of practice. That’s what practice is for, for you to go out there to get the feel of it and things like that. These past two weeks, you got banged up in the games. How you feeling right now? Blessed. Those unscouted looks, uh, Nick KP have talked about them a lot this year, but have they been more prevalent this year from your perspective? Every game you’re going to have unscouted looks. Nobody is going to come out there and, you know, play the same thing that they were playing weeks before. Nobody’s going to go out there and play you the same way they play other teams. So, you’re going to have unscouted looks. um every game now you have to um be able to adjust to it. You know, the first one they might get you cuz you know, you never expected it, but once you kind of get a feel of what they’re doing on certain downs and things like that, we have to be able to adjust to it. How much do you have to be cognizant of where Darwin James is in terms of what they do defensively, moves around a lot, it seems like. Um yeah, you got him a lot because you know for us receiver wise um you know depending on what personnel they have in the game you know certain things change for us and you know sometimes he’s at linebacker so we may be thinking like he’s the nickel or something like that but he’s actually the linebacker and you know it has nothing to do with us. So you have to be you know cautious of you know where he’s at and things like that and know what personnel they’re in. We haven’t spoken to you since before Dallas Gates. Uh that catch down the sideline there. Is that is that in your top uh rankings now? Um I don’t know. I feel like that was just kind of normal catch. Kind of. Yeah, that was a normal catch. Yeah, kind of. Is that the one that led to the injuries in that game? Uh no. I’m sorry. I I didn’t hear what you said. You did you feel recovered from that? The stuff was Yeah, I’m fine. Good. Good. How do you spend for the mini buy? Is there anything that you you learned or you were able to review? So, you know, it’s interesting. I bought me a juicer and I’ve been squeezing oranges, apples, and pineapples for the past 4 days. And let me tell you something, it’s amazing. The best orange and apple juice I’ve ever had was when I squeezed my own. So, you know, that’s what I’ve been doing since, you know, the Black Friday game. Squeezing fruit. What’s your favorite? The apple juice by far. You combine anything? No. Nick asked me that earlier and I think I’m going to go home and do it today. So, we going to see how they go. What are you going to combine? The orange and the apple. Yeah. Do you have your own Jordan? No. No. No. I I ain’t going that far. Are you surprised how little juice you get out of one orange? So, honestly, the orange I get a good little bit. It’s the apples. You gota buy like a hundred apples just to fill up a jar. But it’s worth it. What kind of juicer is it? Like an automatic or Nah, I do it by myself. Somebody told me to get the automatic, but I was like, uh, doing it myself make me feel like I’m actually doing something instead of just putting in the automatic. What compelled you to go on a black? Say what? What compelled you to buy it? What made you buy? I was on Tik Tok and I can’t remember the guy name, but he had one and I just went and ordered the one he had and I was like, “Oh, this this nice right here.” Not a Black Friday sale then. No, it wasn’t no sale. And is it no coincidence that this is now why you’re feeling better? Maybe. Have you brought any in to share with your teammates? Um, I told a couple of them about it. You know, a lot of these guys, you know, they want to get the the automatic juice instead of going out there doing it themselves, you know. How’s it compared to the juice bar here? Um, they done made some crazy crazy stuff. It’s pretty uh pretty good. I get them the edge. Playing good, you know. I mean, you were playing well. Yeah. So, do you take a lot of satisfaction and pride out of what you did like I guess the first 10, 11 games? Um, yeah. I mean, like I said, it ain’t really about me, right? I’m I’m I’m not like this is like not no basketball team where I’m looking to score 40 points and then if I don’t score the next 40 points the next game I’m going to be pissed off and mad. It’s not that. It’s all about you know um wanting joy for yourself of course and then wanting joy for everybody else that’s around you. Like I love watching our guys play. I love watching myself play on tape. You know that’s the best thing about it. And at the end of the day it all equals up to you know having that winning mentality. So that’s that’s what we are here for. Do you find it difficult to sort of figure out what to do with yourself when you’re on the sideline? Because it’s been a long time, I’m sure, since you haven’t. Just preparation, man. Just preparation. I mean, you know, it’s it’s a thing, like I said, it’s a thing called opportunity. When it presents itself, you got to be prepared enough to know mentally and physically and emotionally to know, okay, now is my time to go in there and I have to execute and I have to, you know, making sure that I have a winning mindset. So, I mean, that’s that’s the biggest thing that, you know, I’m always um on the go for. So, do you want to let I mean, I’m sure you want to go out there and like hit somebody. So, do you have this like nervous energy when you’re when you’re out there get on the field? I mean, I you know, every everybody has a joy here. So, I feel like everybody has like that kid emotion like Yeah. It’s like I can’t wait for the game to happen. So, I feel like everybody has that type of feeling. Um man, it’s it’s you know, at the end of the day, it’s it’s always great to just like embrace the journey. Like right now, I’m embracing my journey. I’m embracing my rookie season of what’s happening for me. Um, I mean, I couldn’t ask God for no better opportunity than this. So, at the end of the day, I I always give all glory to God and, you know, just keep on, you know, focusing on, you know, just, um, how how I can better myself each and every day. So, how have you been taking the special teams? I notic you’ve been doing that. Like, was that something you did at Alabama, too? Like, yeah. Um, I want to say probably like freshman, sophomore year, maybe somewhere somewhere like that. So, it’s Yeah, it’s fun. I feel like people don’t really value special teams, but like you see all these people out here like they they work hard like all the special teams guys like we all work hard to be on teams. Like we value that as as another third thing that matters in the game, right? Of course, you know, offense and defense matter, but then special teams change games too. So that’s the biggest thing about it. And I don’t know if we’ve ever seen a coach as honest as Vic Fangio. He tells it how it is. What are those conversations like with him when he talks to you about your role and your development this year? Uh just learn learning and growing, right? Um understanding, you know, that of course I’m a rookie, but you know, it’s it’s it’s it’s what week 14, week 15, what week is it? Somewhere like that. 14. Yeah. Yeah. Understanding like that that type of motto is kind of out the window. And you know, um the expectations and the, you know, and and and just being prepared for the opportunities to come matters the most. So you say that motto I’m so sorry. You say that motto’s out the window with it being your rookie year. When do you feel like it flipped where it was like, “Okay, no, it’s no longer my rookie year anymore.” I mean, like after like a couple games really, you know, when I got out there and, you know, just was playing with alongside with all the other grown men that was out there. Um, you know, just understanding it’s a whole different ball game, right? Um, and you know, just learning and watching film and learning about um, you know, the the the matchups that we have going into each week and really, you know, just learning more about myself and more about how I can be a better preparer um, you know, during the week. Um, you know, just figuring out different ways and different techniques of how I can be the best at, you know, um, you know, just preparation just playing special teams now, like riding a bike. It’s been a couple years since you doing since that’s been like your role or is it was there a little bit of a learning curve around the NFL or it’s more so like just being ready for anything like a high you got to be up for a kickoff bet say no more. Agent how you got to be up for return bet say no more. Like that’s that’s that’s just my model. That’s my mentality. And like I said, it’s really all about, you know, how can I help the team win? How can um other players help the team win? How can we all help each other win? That’s the mindset. And I know there was uncertainty with Nico’s injury and really just the defense as a whole. Did you expect your rookie year to go like this when you thought back in training camp? I don’t know. You got to ask God that question. I just leave it all in God’s hands. You know, make sure I I I I pray and I, you know, I give all glory to him. Um, you know, because without him, I’m nothing. without him none of this would be able to happen. So it’s not really a question I can answer really. So So you didn’t go in with a plan or expectations of your role at all. Uh just day by day um you know just being a being the best version of myself type of motto wide vision and narrow focus and you know just wanting to learn and wanting to grow every day. So and the game plan going against this Chargers team they’ve run successfully before this run defense. What are you noticing? How to improve? Um for us we just got to do our job. We got to do our job. We got strike blocks. We got to get off. We got to play that physical brand of football, that physical standard that we say we just got to do us. And you look at this defense so far. I thought there was a point in the season where you were so consistent defensively, especially against the run. What do you feel like is different and how do you get back to that consistent nature? Oh, we just got to get back to it. We just got to uh what we do is we work and we we confident in oursel and our confidence to see us from our work and we definitely putting in the work this week to be better and to get better uh day in and day out and be one and0 at the end this week and obviously the expectations you’re not used you’re definitely used to this skyhigh outside the building but you look at the rest of this season eight wins top the NFC top of the division do you still see this very much as a successful season so far? Uh we just taking it one day at a time. One day at a time I mean the season not over. We still got what over 25% uh well a little less than 25% of the season. Yeah, the math is making sense. Yeah, over 25% of the season left. So, we um we just taking it a week at a time. I know I am. I mean, I missed the first six games. So, I’m uh I’m having I’m having fun, but we I’m taking it a week at a time. Just trying to continue to get better. We trying to get continue to get better individually, as a unit, and as a team. Kobe, thank you so much. opportunity lies ahead for you against the Chargers. I think just uh be able to show and and prove myself uh to the organization and, you know, prove to myself that I’m able to go out there and compete with uh with the guys. Um so I’m just excited for, you know, whatever whatever they’re willing to give me. With Jaylen Carter out um against LA, what do you um project or what have you been told that your role would be potentially? Uh nothing at this point. you know, not saying that there isn’t one, just, you know, just I’m just ready for whatever they have to whatever they ask of me on that day, uh, coming Monday. How much more prepared would you feel for a role now than maybe earlier in the season? Well, definitely, you know, I was I didn’t know nothing coming into the season, right? But, you know, being around the guys for, you know, halfway through the season, I definitely feel like I’ve grown as a player. Uh, and, you know, obviously I feel a little bit more ready. Uh, you know, it’s a challenge and I, you know, I’m not going to back away from a challenge. I’m going to take what I can with it. Are there certain things you feel you have gotten better at since training camp? I mean, I guess everything just the kind of aspect of building up that that the player that I am, uh, you know, with the awesome people in this building, being able to put in extra work with them and, you know, just to see that continued growth. So, you know, time to put it to the test. As you work to build your game, do they kind of focus you on certain things week in and week out or is it like collective growth? Uh kind of both. Uh you know the player dev group uh player dev here you know they’ve done an awesome job with helping us especially rookies like set goals uh during kind of these phases of the season and then you know every week I kind of like to have my own you know one to two things I’d like to work on for that week uh to improve. Is there any goal you’d like to share with us? Uh yeah, I mean whether it’s you know my strike uh you know maybe you know cuz sometimes you know if you start to focus on your strike a little bit more then your legs kind of you you’re so focused on that you don’t really focus on your legs. So then it’s like now you focus on the next week on on your legs and kind of putting that one and two together uh and kind of like I said kind of forming together that whole kind of player. Have the coaches talked to you about what your new role might be now that Jaylen partner is going to miss? No. Uh, like I just said to her, uh, I just whatever they’re willing to give, uh, whatever that role is going to be, uh, you know, I’m here for the room. We got an awesome room that’s going to also step up on Monday. Uh, and I’m excited to be behind those guys. Can you describe what you’re seeing out of the Chargers offense, particularly in that battle of trenches? I mean, yeah, you know, they got a strong group up front. Uh, you know, they have a really a athletic quarterback. Uh, and same with the running backs as well. So, you know, it’s going to be a fun game, uh, come Monday. What’s the last month been like not playing? Is it just kind of strange for you to not play? It’s definitely, you know, a strange feeling. Uh, but, you know, I’m I’m humble about it. Uh, I I understood when I came here that I was going to be around, you know, a bunch of dudes, so I knew that I was going to have to work even harder to have that this opportunity to get on the field. Uh, obviously the Eagles believed in in me and being able to do that. So, I just have to do the same thing. How did you go about shifting your mind mindset as someone who played a lot in college and then had to go to your situation? I think yeah just just kind of like a you know I’m a realistic person uh so just being patient and understanding that you know football has its its tendency to you know be violent and you know guys are going to go down with something and you know obviously you never want that but it’s just kind of the reality of the game and so just to continue to work and you know help that motivate me in a good way to to be ready when the time comes. Does it make it any tougher to gauge your progress when you’re not able to put it into a game? No, cuz I mean we go against, you know, these guys up front uh in practice. I mean, one of the best O line in the NFL. Like I I think it’s a pretty good gauge. You know, if I’m having a good day against them, things are going in the right direction. Ty, what’s the biggest thing you’ve taken away from the mental reps? In what regard? Like to the defense or technique or Yeah, to technique. Uh I mean, you know, getting to watch uh you know, like JD, JC, and Morrow. uh just being able to kind of take things from their game uh whether what they see in their technique as well. I mean, you know, JD is such a he’s just a monster of a human being and he’s just, you know, his raw strength. So, just being able to like kind of see how he uses that and like the leverage to his advantage and then, you know, Mororrow’s brains and being able to apply that to the game and then JC’s, you know, athletic ability of seeing, okay, he’s able to beat dudes doing these types of moves or this way. So, you know, it’s just kind of like you get to pick and choose from anybody.
