The Pittsburgh Pirates Land “The Password” from Red Sox! (Ep.19)
The Pittsburgh Pirates officially made their first major move this off season, acquiring Joseen Garcia, a top prospect from the Boston Red Sox in exchange for starting pitcher Johan Ovido in a big five player trade. Let’s break that down today and as well cover maybe a preview for the winter meetings this coming week. Maybe some more moves coming along the ways. Uh, make sure to subscribe to the channel. Make sure to leave a like on the video for more. Let’s go Bucks. Let’s get into this. So last night, the Pittsburgh Pirates, I’m out for dinner for my birthday. Shameless plug, now 24. Ben Jarington gave me this as a birthday present. He said, “You know, I know Nathan, you really want Kouma Okamoto on the Pirates. You’re going to have to wait a couple more days because I’m going to give you the password.” So instead of trying to pronounce Joe Stinson Garcia, I have his pronunciation on baseball reference. I don’t even know if I’m saying the pronunciation right. He’s named that. He has the nickname the password that is because his name is gonna be crazy to say, crazy to spell. I’m really excited for the premise of having to hear Greg Brown try to pronounce this every day. It might be cringey at the same time, but that’s not the story about this. The Pirates went out and got a outfielder. And is he going to be the solution for the outfield spot this off season? Personally, I kind of hope he isn’t and I kind of hope there’s more. But Justinen Garcia, aka the password, we’ll just call him the password here. Um, he provides something to the Pirates desperately need. They need a young controllable bat in the outfield. Kind of like what they did with Horwitz last year for Luis Ortiz. This trade reminds me a lot of that Luis Ortiz trade. You got a guy in Spencer Horwitz, the guy who’s controllable. He’s set as your first base position. If you get Garcia here, aka the password, maybe he slides into left field. He can play all the outfield. Maybe he takes over center field. Maybe they get weird move Cruz to left because I think you have to keep cruising the outfield no matter what. I think Cruz is a guy you can’t play at DH, but that’s not the point of this episode. Garcia is a guy that I think could slide in as a left fielder for the Pirates. He could be that option. Maybe they go the route this winter meetings to try to find him a platoon partner because Garcia the password is a righty. Maybe you pair him with a lefty and maybe spend more of this money that you have on a third baseman, which personally I have been pounding the table for a third baseman this off seasonason and I kind of hope they go that route. spend the most on the third baseman. Maybe get a platoon outfielder to pair with the password here. Now, what the password provides is a lot more depth. I would rather have Garcia than Jack Sinsky take a roster spot. I’d rather have Garcia as the fourth outfielder over a Jack Sinsky. Now, Jack Suinsky, of course, can go into spring training and light the world on fire. And he is on his last chance that he has no more options. If he’s cut, he has to either hope he gets picked up by another team or when no one else picks up his 1.2 or whatever it is, he’s just going to be stuck in the Indianapolis Indians organization for a while. Garcia is going to give him a lot of pressure because Garcia is a top 100 prospect and top three. He was third ranked in the Boston Red Sox organization in their according to MLB pipeline and he is already on the Pirates top 10. I think it was six or six. I think it was sixth overall thinking about in my head. But here’s the overall trade. Let’s just break this down really quick. My chair is really squeaky. Sorry if you guys hear that today. So, the overall trade, what we got here is the Pirates got the password and right-handed pitcher prospect Jesus Travaso. I hope I pronounced that right. In exchange, they sent over Johan Oedo. This is the big piece of this trade. Major, this is the only major league talent in this trade. Um, left-handed pitcher Tyler Samgo, who was actually just brought on to the 40man roster. He was one of those guys people are like wonder why he’s on the 40man. Maybe this is why. And then catcher prospect Adonis Guzman. He was a draft pick this last year. I think it was the fifth round. Top of my head. But yeah, that’s the overall trade. But the two major pieces are ODO to the Red Sox and the password coming to the Pirates. I like this trade. As you can probably tell, I am a big fan of this trade. When I saw it, I was like, you’ve got to be kidding me. The Pirates actually went out there and got the password. This was a guy many Pirates fans were putting in Mitch Keller trades during the trade deadline. My chair is really squeaky. Hopefully that stops. But this was a guy a lot of Pirates fans put in those Mitch Keller trades and you got him without giving up a Mitch Keller. Now I think this trade also has ramifications or a trickle down effect to a possible Mitch Keller trade because personally I don’t think that’s happening anymore because you already gave up Ovido out of your starting pitching depth. What do you have left to give up in the major leagues? You’re not going to give up Paul Skins. He’s off the table. Other pitchers in the major leagues, Mitch Keller, Braxton Ashcraft, you could throw Bubba Chandler in that list. Mike Burroughs, that’s five. Skins, Keller, Ashcraft, Burrows, Chandler. That’s already five guys. Oedo probably would have been fighting for a spot in that rotation even though he probably would have got it. Maybe they would have put Chandler or Burroughs in the bullpen to start it out. You also have Hunter Barco coming off. So, of all these guys to move, I think Odo, Johan Odo was the guy to move. He’s coming off of a Tommy John injury. Sure, Oedo, in my opinion, had a really solid year. He was a solid pitcher for the Buckos this past season. Oedo with a 357 RA, 40 and a third innings of work, only for 42 strikeouts. He had nine starts in nine games. He was coming off of an injury. Um, in his career, he is a career has a career 424 erra, 67 starts in 81 games, pitched 361 innings on the dot, and 321 strikeouts. His whip this season was a 1.215. His career whip is a 1.377. Um, yeah, Odo is a good pitcher. I think he’s going to be a solid pitcher for the Red Sox. And the Red Sox have already gone out this off season. Literally this week, I think it was actually Tuesday, I think it was Tuesday, if not the week before, they got Sunny Gray from the Cardinals. They’ve already acquired one pitcher and now they get Johan Ovo to throw in that rotation. Or if supposedly they’re in on more pitching, maybe Ovito is a guy they’re going to throw in the bullpen. So, I like this trade from the Red Sox perspective as well. they have gone out and gotten a bunch of veteran starters or in Ovido’s case a younger a younger style veteran starter that maybe you could throw in the bullpen. Now like I said the Red Sox have a positive in this trade. The Pirates have a positive in this trade. Um the random minor leaguers Jesus Traviero coming to the Pirates. I don’t really know know much about him. Reading stuff on Twitter it seems like a lot of Red Sox fans think he was actually pretty good. He’s he’s still very far away. classic lottery ticket and then the Red Sox getting San Diego. Let’s be honest, not a lot of Pirates fans even knew who he was when he was added the 40man. So, let’s not act upset and no offense to him. And Adonis Guzman, I forgot they drafted him. So, it’s just literally the password. I was try pronouncing his game name again. The password and Odo included with a bunch of lottery tickets. This is a fine trade. I think this is a win-win trade for both sides. I don’t think it has to be a sweep for ei a sweep a whatever whatever it is a what whatever the word is. I can’t think of it think of it. It’s going to now it’s bothering me. I can’t think of the word. I don’t think it’s a bad trade at all. I think it’s a very fair trade for both sides. The Pirates get outfield depth that they desperately need or a guy that they can actually play. Oh, fleece was the word. This was not a fleece for either side. I don’t know how I couldn’t think of fleece, but this is a trade that I think both sides win. At the end of the day, the Pirates are getting a guy that they are going to have years of control of that is a very highly regarded prospect in the minor leagues. The Red Sox are going to get a guy in Johan Ovo who’s coming up on Jason Mack said it coming up on ARB 2. Um, he has injury history, but he can be a dog and I really liked what Odo did. But at the end of the day, to get better, the Pirates are going to have to use this starting pitching surplus that they have to make a trade like this. And this is the type of guy I think the Pirates should be going after, especially since they have a lot of money to spend. Supposedly have a lot of money to spend. Um, the payroll is around $60 million right now around the range. You cut some of it with Odo. Go out this week, splurge at the winter meetings, go out and get that third baseman, which I want to cover in the next segment we’re going to do. But briefly, let’s cover the password stats really quick. Um, this past year in the minor leagues, um, well, actually, a lot of old elderly folk, yinszers, I’m sorry to say this. Don’t listen to Pirates Facebook or the angry people on Twitter are just mad to be mad about this. They I saw people screenshotting his seven career MLB at bats this year, calling him a bad baseball player. He’s had seven career at bats, guys. What are we doing? I know it’s the Pirates and we suck, but seven career at bats, be better than that to judge players. That’s just a little rant I have. But this season in the in the minor leagues, he played in double A and AAA. He has surged through this system of the Red Sox. 2023 he was in high A. 2024 he went from low A that is to double A. And then in 2025 he went from double A to AAA. In the span of basically two seasons he’s gone through the whole system. um this year with the doublea doublea Portland um he had three home runs 17 ribbies had 256 748 OPS is what it is 33 games but with AAA in wherever their AAA team is I can’t think I think Warchester um but 81 games in AAA this year the power exploded 18 home runs 58 RBI’s about a 271 with an 832 OPS the thing that worries a lot of fans and I understand this worry is the strikeouts he struck out 102 times times in Triple A this year. He has a very weird strikeout concern. Um, but it seems to be something every year that has gotten better for him, the plate discipline. Um, he had a total of 131 strikeouts this season. That is not good. But that comes with a guy in Garcia what he is going to do. He’s going to be a guy to hit you the home runs. His overall minor league career, he has a total of 55 home runs. across whatever 370 games. That’s basically over the course 160 I’m trying to add up really quick math. Um I’m very bad at math as a 24 year old man now. Um 162 plus 162 that’s 324. So that’s basically two two and a3 seasons hitting 55 home runs. I’ll take it. I’ll take the guy of that potential any day. He can be a guy to go opposite field as well. Just look at one of his videos on YouTube that all these highlight videos. Red Sox fans love this guy. And I see Red Sox fans after the trade on social media turning on this dude saying he sucks now. No, it doesn’t have to be you fleeced you, you fleeced them. No, I think this is a win-win trade for both sides. Red Sox get another pitcher. Pirates add very solid outfield depth. And personally, no offense to Jack Suinsky, I’d rather have the password over Jack Suinsky. If this guy is starting opening day, there might be people mad. I don’t know if I’d be mad though because maybe that is the Pirates went out and spent the money on a third baseman or maybe even a catcher or maybe even a DH or something. But if he’s starting opening day, I I’d be open to it because he has the potential. Now, sure, there’s worries about the strikeouts. Like I said, but I think this was a great trade for both sides. This was a great start to the offseason for the Pirates. The winter meetings are coming up, though. Let’s talk about that right now. Moving on to the winter meetings. They are next week in Orlando, Florida. One of my favorite times of the year. This is where the Pirates got Spencer Horwitz last year and they did this trade for the password last night on the 4th, the couple days before the meetings even start. So, the winner meetings are going to have things like the roll five draft, um the MLB draft lottery. You’re going to find out where the Pirates are picking. I think they’re top three in odds right now. Um so, maybe they get away with the number one overall pick. Who knows? But there has been nothing but constant rumor surrounding the Pittsburgh Pirates saying they’re going to get this guy, they’re going to get this guy, they’re in on this guy, here’s some trade fits, here’s some guys they could sign. The names that just stick out the most to me in my opinion have been the likes of a Ryan O’Harn, a Jorge Palano, Palanco that is, and a Kazoua Okamoto. That those are the guys that I think they’re going to be getting. And I think they actually might might go out and get one of these dudes this week. I hope they do. Um, just reading an excerpt from a Robert Murray uh, fan site article just coming out here. Um, Pirates pushed to make a splash on the offense. The Pirates have been connected to almost every free agent bat imaginable. As I just said, they had serious interest in Josh Naylor. I doubt they land Kyle Schwarber. That is something people have also said. I think we’re all open and they are not getting Kyle Schwber. So, that leaves a few options such as Jorge Palanco, Ryan O’Harn, and JT Ramudo among others. I expect the Pirates to land a meaningful bat and add other pieces on offense. And then on Jorge Palano, he has interest from the Mariners and Seattle would want him back. If Jorge Palano went to Seattle, that’s fine as well. I think the Pirates are in on him, but I think they’re desperate. There was a John Haymon post and this is what makes me most excited. I’ve said I wanted the Pirates to go out and get a third baseman. Make it happen this winter meetings. Get Okamoto. I covered him in a segment last time in our previous episode. It’s been a while since been able to do one. time’s been consuming, but I like the idea of Okamoto. It’s the supposedly he has interest from the Red Sox, Blue Jays, and Pirates. Two big teams and then the Pittsburgh Pirates. If the Pirates want him to make the risk, I would love it. You’re going to have to pay him a lot more than the Blue Jays or Red Sox because the Blue Jays seem very busy this off seasonason. So, that is something we could keep an eye out for this winter meetings. looking at these Rhino Hearns, Jorge Palanos, Kazama Okamoto’s, um your JT Romudos, maybe who knows in that fever dream of a world. Um other guys, uh maybe look at some outfielders, maybe look at some trades. Um Ken Rodenthal said last night after the trade happened, um the Pirates are open to trading another starting pitcher, not named Paul Skins. That’s why I whenever I was listing these starting pitchers that they have for next year, that’s why I was like, you you will have Paul Ske. Maybe that’s another thing we see. There’s been trade rumors. There’s been Brandon Laauo connections. There’s been Yandandy Diaz stuff people have talked about from the Rays. There’s been Jeff McNeel from the Mets. Personally, not my favorite one, but it’s it’s a bat. Um, there’s been even Cardinals ones, and that’s something I also really wanted to talk about today. These these Arizona Cardinals, I’m in football land. Um, baseball, the Arizona, my gosh, Nathan, the St. Louis Cardinals. That is um imagine they were a trade partner for the Pirates. That is a team that wants young pitching. The Pirates have a lot of it. And the Cardinals have been known to be shopping Brennan Donovan, Alec Burlson, Lars Nuke Barn, Nolan Gorman. Personally, of those names, it’s Donovan and Burlson that I would like the most. But do you think the Cardinals trade their best bats to the Pirates? And do you think the Pirates are trading their best young starters to the Cardinals? It’s one of those weird interdivision trades that we saw Jose Canana for a Johan Ova who just got flipped over to the Red Sox and Contana still doing his thing basically free agent every year. Do we see them do that again? I don’t know if I see the Pirates giving up on an Ashcraft or a Burroughs and sending them off to I said Arizona again. Um sending them off to St. Louis to kill the Pirates for years to come because they have a lot of control. I personally don’t see that. But if they were to go out and get a bat to do it like Brennan Donovan to add to the infield, Brennan Donovan is an upgrade, I think, over Nick Gonzalez, and I love Nick Gonzalez. I like what he can do. But so far, his career has been very eh. He’s been a very mid baseball player, low-end mid baseball player. And Brennan Donovan adds contact, he adds some pop. That’s could be a great second base. Brandon Laauo, same thing. Great second base. He’s going to be weird. He’s going to be a weird one because he has only one year left of control. And it’s like, do you see the Pirates doing that type of trade? Personally, I’d be fine with it, but maybe you just have to give up a Thomas Harrington, which personally, if I’m trading a starting pitcher in my minor leagues instead of Barco, I’m going Thomas Harrington because what we saw last year was not good. He didn’t have the greatest minor league year last year anyway. And also, I think he’s a very expendable starter in the minor leagues. So, that’s a little bit of a winter meetings preview. This kind of a shorter episode. But I mainly just wanted to cover this uh the password for OVO trade. But this winter meetings hopefully a lot happens so we can talk about it here on the YouTube channel. Um might get back to doing some MLB stuff overall. I know I want to do that more. It’s just been really time consuming. Um trying to find time to make scripts. Um figure out stuff to talk about and this off seasonason just been really slow besides some of these trades like the NMO for Simeon trade was good. This Pirates Red Sox trade was really good. But besides that, there hasn’t been like the Sunny Grey one, but like these free agent signings, it takes forever, guys. Like the MLB offseason’s so slow. I’m hoping we get some stuff. I know there was a rumor last night while I was driving home that Kyle Tucker was saw at the Blue Jays facility. That’s big if the Blue Jays go out and get Kyle Tucker over the LA Dodgers. But yeah, winter meetings coming up. Pirates got the password. I think this is a great start to the official start to the offseason for the Pirates. I know a lot of other other teams have done stuff, but this is the official start to the Pirates offseason. I think it was a great way to get it going to get the password. Winter meetings coming up. Hopefully, we have an episode soon talking about who they got, what they traded for, if they do anything at the winter meetings. You’re not forced to. Um, a lot of teams didn’t last year. The only thing the Pirates did in the winter meetings was Spencer Horowitz. So, who knows if they even do anything. Um, if anything, we can talk about whatever else happens. Uh, maybe the draft war. Maybe we can rant about them getting not a good pick, but who knows? U make sure to subscribe to down to the Make sure to subscribe. That is I can’t talk today. Not a Pirate fan but the password seems like a good addition to a struggle bus team. Good luck.
Nathan, you're quite good as a Pirates talk guy. I didn't hear your chair squeaking. Keep up the good work.
welcome to the pirates password your a welcome addition.
