GAME-CHANGER: Philadelphia Phillies ENTER Japanese Market—Alexandre Moreti’s Signing Makes HISTORY

The Philadelphia Phillies finally have broken into the Japanese market. And even though it isn’t the sexiest move at face value, I’ll tell you why this is a huge moment for the franchise as a whole on today’s episode. You are Locked on Phillies, your daily Philadelphia Phillies podcast, part of the Locked On Network. Your team every day. Yes, this is Locked on Phillies. I’m your host, Connor Thomas. Thank you so much for joining us today. We come to you as part of the Locked on Podcast Network. Your team every day. Now, the number one sports podcast network. And Locked on Phillies is your number one place for daily Philadelphia Phillies content Monday through Friday. Couple special weekend episodes for you because the winter meetings, they start tomorrow. You might know me for some of my other work in the sports talk space. I’ve been on air over at 975, the fanatic doing sports talk radio here in Philly for over six years. Been a credentialed Philadelphia Phillies media member for the past four seasons and this is now my fourth year as the host of Locked on Phillies. Today’s episode is brought to you by FanDuel if you want to be right in the middle of the action this season. Visit fandal.com and place your NFL live bets all season long. The Phillies have finally broken into the Japanese market, going out and signing Alexandre Moretti to a minor league contract. Now, if you’re saying, “Well, that’s not Tatsuya. That’s not Mundaka Morakami.” That’s okay because you have to start somewhere. We talk about why this is such a big moment, years and years in the making for the Philadelphia Phillies as a franchise. Later on in the episode, we’re going to discuss the Kyle Schwarber bidding war as it continues to develop because the Phillies have to be careful because I don’t think other teams are bluffing with the way they are chasing down Kyle Schwarber. If you try and call their bluff, you might get burned. We’ll also wrap up with some interesting comments from Nick Castanos, who I still believe is going to get traded, but he talked about a position change recently. We’ll talk about that as well. But let’s start with a huge moment for the Philadelphia Phillies as a major league baseball franchise. They have recently signed Alexandria Moretti to a minor league contract. Now, you might say, “Okay, that that name does not sound Japanese.” Well, he has his father is Brazilian, his mother Japanese. He was born and raised in Japan. He does have Brazilian citizenship. So, he will be playing in the World Baseball Classic for Brazil. So, you might say, “Oh, that’s that’s not the same thing.” Okay, the point is this. The the kid is from Japan. He is fresh out of high school. He’s on a minor league deal. He’s not going to be pitching for the Phillies at the major league level anytime soon. So, why does this matter? Well, because previously the Phillies had never signed a player directly out of Japan in their franchise history. We’ve never seen it. And that’s a weak spot for this franchise. Their international scouting has not been up to par with the other top players in Major League Baseball. And you can’t have that in the modern game. You’ve got insane talent coming from all corners of the globe. And if you’re non-existent in a certain market, especially Japan with what you’ve seen in the past couple years with players coming over here who have been game changers for some of the top teams in baseball, you’re at a major disadvantage. This is a foundational move. And nobody drives by a construction site and sees a bunch of workers laying down slabs of concrete as the foundation for what one day could be a beautiful home and say, “Wow, that’s a goodlooking foundation.” It’s not a sexy move. It’s not one that’s going to win you any awards, but it’s an important step of the process because what we’ve seen over the past couple of years is the Phillies really make a concerted effort to build up their presence over in Japan with scouting and evaluating these players. Dave Dumbrosseski spoke recently about how in past years when the Phillies would have considered international talent from out of Japan, he was kind of shooting in the dark. I don’t know what this guy really is. I don’t have a good feel on who this player is. And now they have much more information to feel much more comfortable signing players out of that market. Now Moretti may never pitch for the Phillies. He is fresh out of high school. There’s like one video that looks like one of those perfect game highlight tapes that kids get made over here in the States when they’re in high school, like junior or senior year. Uh, do do not go look up my perfect game highlight tape. By the way, my mechanics were garbage. I got lucky. I got to play at the collegiate level and play a little semi-pro ball. But man, junior year Connor was not was not getting drafted anytime soon. But you see what I’m saying? Like it’s not like this kid is this polished final product that is this huge signing that’s going to impact the Phillies from his ability. But this is hugely important for what it represents. Last year or two years ago with Yoshobo Yamamoto coming out and the Phillies offering him an over $300 million contract. That’s a situation that was a huge step in and of itself. The Phillies had never offered a sizable deal to a Japanese posted player. They had had interest in the past, but never gotten to the point where they had meetings and actually made an offer. And even though the offer was not remotely accepted, like Yamamoto was always going to the Dodgers, that was a strong understanding from when he first got posted from the Nepon Professional Baseball League over in Japan. it was still a point where it was like okay we feel comfortable enough to offer this amount of money to this player in a market willingness is one of the first steps so the Phillies over the past couple of years have taken incremental steps towards taking advantage of the Japanese market and that’s something again that they’ve been heavily missing they are behind the eightball but hey you know the expression goes better late than never right and now the Phillies are players somewhat in that market. This could really like exponentially grow, too. There are some Japanese players that are posted this year that the Phillies have been tied to in free agency that could actually be impact players at the major league level. Really, there are three big ones. Of course, you’re thinking about Tatsuya, who the Phillies have been linked to closely in the past week or so. the pitcher that throws 98 99, not a big body guy, not exactly this dude that’s like a Roki Sasaki or Yoshobu Yamamoto or certainly not a show Otani. He’s not going to come in and be like an ace of the staff, but he’s a major league ready player by a lot of people’s evaluation. So, that would be a big step up from just signing a kid out of high school who no one really knows what he’s going to be. A couple other names to keep an eye on, Wataka Morakami has been a name that has popped up because of the Philly’s potential need for a power bat at third base. That’s another guy you could look at and a recent name that has gained a lot of traction among Phillies fans. I’ve been seeing a lot of people tweet about this next guy as a better option at third base potentially. Kazuma Okamoto, another powerhitting corner infielder. The only difference this guy younger than Morakami. So you could look at or sorry older than Morami. So you’re getting a guy that may be more major league ready, but he’s a righty. So he fits a little bit of the need better for the Philadelphia Phillies. That that’s the biggest issue with Morami. He’s a left-handed hitter. You put him in this lineup with Schwarber and Harper and well Sto and Marsh say, they have trouble hitting lefties. Lefties have been really, really tough against the Phillies the past couple of years. Kyle Schwarber’s incredible season against left-handed pitchers was a huge benefit for the Phillies this past year. But it’s a really interesting development for the Phillies because of what it represents. It’s the next logical step in increasing their presence in the Japanese market. And you got to start somewhere. And this is the true start of the Phillies being able to entice players from Japan to come play for their franchise. We know as well historically Japanese players feel more comfortable going to organizations that other Japanese players have played for. That’s why the Dodgers keep getting all these guys because well show goes there and they’ve had Japanese players in the past and it’s a West Coast team and I listen that makes total perfect sense, right? Don’t you want to go where you feel comfortable, where you have some familiarity? And now the Phillies have taken their first step to becoming one of those teams. So I’m not here to tell you Moretti is going to be this game-changing presence in his ability. But it is just like you’re opening the door just even if it’s a crack to a market that you haven’t been able to take advantage of. And you could see that lead to it could be a precursor to the Phillies signing one of the big three Japanese free agents this off season. So, it’s not so much about the player himself, it’s about what he represents. And I have to imagine the Phillies were incredibly excited to ink that deal. It’s a proof of concept. It’s the blueprint. And now you try and go after the actual big players that could help your major league team right now. It’s a beautiful thing by the Philadelphia Phillies. I’m very excited for it. It has been a weak spot for the history of the franchise, but really in the past five years or so as the Japanese market has exploded with talent. And this is something that could hopefully give the Phillies an edge that they have not had in the past. We’re going to do an offthe- poll question for tomorrow’s episode because I’m going to record on the first day of the winter meetings as a full preview of what you’re going to be looking for. And my question in the off the pole segment which will be posted on our Twitter account l_fillies and I’ll retweet it from my own personal exac account, Twitter account, whatever you want to call it at Connor Thomas975 is which of the top three Japanese free agents do you most want the Phillies to sign? Tatsuya Imi, Mundaka Morakami, or Kazumo Okamoto? Who fits best for the Phillies in your opinion? That will be our poll question. and I will post that later today so you can get your votes in and we will react to the votes in the final segment of tomorrow’s episode. Now, a market that the Phillies are very familiar with is the Kyle Schwarber market, but there are a lot of teams in on Schwarber, and there’s belief that some could be in just to bid up the price. It happened just two years ago to the Phillies with another big-time free agent, and that one didn’t work out. So, how do the Phillies handle people trying to artificially inflate the price of Kyle Schwarber? We talk about that as we continue today’s episode. All right, first let’s talk about our friends over at Game Time because there are a lot of great sports going on right now. You got to get in the building or you got to plan something out big. The World Cup’s coming back to North America for the first time since 1994. And with 48 teams for the first time ever, it’s going to be massive. But let’s be honest, getting tickets is usually the hardest part. That’s why the Game Time app’s clutch. Finally giving fans a real advantage when it comes to snagging seats. With Game Time, you can track price drops in real time, get alerts when great seats open, and buy tickets the moment they hit the app. It puts the power back in your hands. It makes going to the World Cup realistic instead of impossible. I was looking at tickets the other day. The groups just came out. USA is in a group with Australia and Paraguay and another at large team. So, we know who’s kind of playing where at what times. The schedule’s coming out. You’re going to want to get on these tickets fast. Or if you want to wait until the price drops, game time is the number one place to find the best possible deal. And you’ll get views from your seats. You’ll get the game time guarantee, which means your tickets are going to be 100% legitimate every time. and you see the full price before you go to check out so you don’t get hit with these ridiculous fees at the end. Take the guesswork out of buying World Cup tickets and every match, concert, or event you want to go to with Game Time. Download the Game Time app, create an account, and use code locked on MLB for $20 off your first purchase. Terms apply. Again, download the app, make an account, and use code locked on MLB for $20 off. Swipe, tap, ticket, and go with Game Time. The Kyle Schwarber market is heating up. It’s getting ridiculous out here, folks. And because of that, the Phillies have a really tough strategic play that they’re going to have to handle. They’ve got to thread the needle. I’ll tell you what’s not tough though, being part of our everydayers club. We’re putting out daily content on the Philadelphia Phillies. We’re about to hit the winter meetings. Thank you for making Lock on Phillies part of your everyday schedule. The Phillies would like Kyle Schwarber to come back to be an everyday player for them, but it’s going to cost them. A couple of updates on where the Kyle Schwarber market is. There’s a lot of teams in Boston, Cincinnati, of course, the New York Mets are deciding to get in on this whole shindig with Kyle Schwarber. And the Mets are a really intriguing one. I’m not worried about Cincinnati because every report is they won’t have the money to sign him. I don’t think Boston is going to make as competitive of an offer as the Philadelphia Phillies, but the Mets are the troublemaker here. They are They’ve got deep pockets. Steve Cohen is the richest owner in baseball and he is not afraid to throw his financial weight around. Two years ago, Aaron Nola hit the free agency market. Do you know the reason why the Phillies spent as much as they did on Aaron? because the Atlanta Braves decided to go out and offer a heavy contract to him and the Phillies thought, “Well, we can’t let him go to a division rival.” Credit to Alexopoulos, the GM of the Braves, or maybe he’s the president of baseball operations. Generally, the same title, you know, everyone’s got weird titles these days, but he made a smart move bidding up the price on Nola to make the Phillies pay more to make sure he doesn’t go to a division rival. Now, as we sit here today, there are a lot of Phillies fans that wish the Phils would have let Nola go to Atlanta because he hasn’t been great since signing this long-term extension. But that’s a savvy move by a division rival. Did the Braves have interest in signing Aaron? Yeah, to some extent. Would they have wanted to sign him at the dollar amount that they offered? Maybe not. But this is a highstakes game of cards right now. and the Braves bluffed the Phillies into paying more money. Maybe it was only like a half bluff because they would have liked to have Aaron. He’s still a talented pitcher, but that’s where this Kyle Schwarber thing gets tricky. I don’t know how real the Mets interest is in Kyle Schwarber, but I have to imagine it’s pretty legitimate. Pete Alonzo is a free agent. They need another bat to protect Juan Sodto and Kyle Schwarber may be the perfect perfect guy to do so. Great against lefties, puts together awesome at bats, is a great clubhouse guy, which they could certainly use in New York after the collapse they went through this past year. So, I I don’t think that the Phillies should be able to sit there and say, “Oh, well, the Mets are bluffing us. We’re going to learn from the Aaron experience. we’re not going to fall for it. If they want to pay him that ridiculous amount of money, Kyle, it was good to have you. That’s not how I feel about Schwarber. Now, am I potentially setting up the same mistake twice for the Philadelphia Phillies? I could be. And you can let me know if you think that’s crazy because recent estimates have Kyle Schwarber asking for five years. Could you imagine that? five-year contract for him where you’re sitting at a 33 year old DH that would take him to his age 38 season. You already got Harper signed into his late 30s. Turner signed into his late 30s. Like, you’ve got these guys locked down forever. Nola is signed into his late 30s. We were just talking about that contract. Can the Phillies afford to give out a five-year deal to another dude on the wrong side of 30? Here’s how I see it. What would be the worst thing for Philadelphia Phillies fans? Cincinnati wins. Okay, he he goes to Cincinnati. That would suck, but I don’t know that he’s the difference between them contending or not contending. I like Kyle Schwarber. I I don’t know if that Red’s team is close enough that he is the guy to get them over the hump, right? They were a fringe playoff team that snuck in this year. uh goes to Boston, American League team. You’ll deal with that if you see him in the World Series. That’s that’s not a huge deal from the Phillies perspective. But if you had the option to either A overpay Schwarber, give him a year more or two years more than what you were planning on and more money than what you were planning on, or B, he goes to the New York Mets on a five-year deal and for the next five years, you could be dealing with a 45 or 50 home run a year bat on a division rival, a team that is really talented and just have to Like, could you imagine? I want you to close your eyes right now. As long as you’re not like driving around or something while you listen to this, and think about I’m closing my eyes, too, if you’re not watching on YouTube. Think about Kyle Schwarber hitting a home run for the Mets against the Phillies. Like, that would shatter my heart. And I know you shouldn’t make emotional decisions when it comes to this amount of money in this amount of years. like it’s a business and you have to be frugal and you have to be smart. But I think that’s doomsday scenario for the Philadelphia Phillies is if you think the Mets are bluffing, they actually sign him and then you got to deal with the repercussions. So the price is the price. You’re hamstrung because you didn’t get an extension done with him before he hit free agency. And now the Mets are going to jack up that price and offer him a ridiculous amount and force you to match it. And I imagine the Phillies are going to and it’s the right move because it’s the lesser of two evils. It’s not ideal, but I still think it’s what you have to do. So, if Kyle Schwarber is going to get a fiveyear offer from the New York Mets, let me know in the comments. Do you have to sign him? because I’m still doing it and it sucks, but I just can’t allow him to go to a division rival, especially on a long-term deal and a team that I believe is close to the Philadelphia Phillies in contention status. We’ll keep you updated on the latest Kyle Schwarber news as we get the winter meeting started tomorrow. But we got a little bit of weird Nick Castianos news. We got to talk about a potential position change for Cassie and what does that say for his time in Philadelphia? We’ll talk about that as we continue today’s episode. Let’s talk about FanDuel first, though, because NFL Sundays, they move fast. One big play and suddenly everything feels different. That’s what makes live betting with FanDuel so exciting. You’re not just watching the game, you’re reacting to it in real time. With FanDuel, you can place bets as the action unfolds. Every drive, every momentum swing, every highlight moment. Live betting is the best when the game starts to shift, a receiver gets hot, a defense tightens up, or the momentum flips after a turnover. FanDuel let you jump into the moment. If you’re an Eagles fan, you’re going to know what I’m talking about here. The the birds are up 14 at halftime, 21 at halftime. They’ve had a great first half. What would be the smart bet? take the other team against the spread because the Eagles have been terrible in second halfs. You know this and you let the momentum affects the lines and then you jump in right when you could take advantage. That’s why live betting is so good. You get information rather than just betting blindly before the game starts. You can bet props, parlays, spread, money line, overunder, all of that great stuff. Payouts are quick and easy and secure. And the interface with FanDuel is so sleek and fast that you can get your bets in in a moment’s notice. So if you want to be right in the middle of the action this season, visit fandal.com and place your NFL live bets all season long. FanDuel, the game moves fast and so can you. So, Nick Castanos recently, I believe it was on Foul Territory, uh, gave a little interview and was talking about his off season and stuff going on and and he had a really interesting comment about changing positions. They asked him on the podcast he was on about potentially playing first base. And Cassie said, “Well, hey, if a team is interested in me doing that, I’d be open to playing first base.” Now, the way he phrased that is very important. If a team is interested in me doing that, he did not say if the Phillies are interested in me doing that. He’s currently still under contract for another year with the Philadelphia Phillies, but he’s not talking like he’s a guaranteed member of the team. That could just be Castianis’ weird way of phrasing it, but to me that is a textbook textbook example of a guy whose time with a franchise has come to an end. It seems like he’s expecting to get moved. It seems like he’s expecting the Phillies to move him. Like that’s just where we’re at with the Nick Castiano saga at this point. And for anyone who thinks, “Oh, well could you flip things around with the Phillies? Maybe if he switched to first base, he could stay and that could fix the Phillies situation somehow. Let’s go through this hypothetically. Let’s say the Phillies were to move Nick Castanos to first base. What does that do? What are the repercussions of that? Well, one, Bryce Harper would be out of position. He would have to go to the outfield. And he said he’s willing to for the right circumstance to go back to the outfield. Let’s just say this is the right circumstance. I don’t believe it would be. Let’s just say for fun it is. Bryce Harper goes to right field. Nick Castanos goes to first base. And we just have a position swap. Bryce Harper has been a gold glove caliber first baseman since taking over that position. Nick Castadoos is not a gold glover at any position on the field. So immediately you’re getting lesser defense at first base. Harper is better at first base than he is in the outfield. So, you’re getting lesser defense overall. You get an average to potentially below average right fielder. You get a below average to potentially average first baseman. You got two guys that are playing outside of their best position at this point in their careers. And it doesn’t change anything about the lineup. All it is is your defensive alignment shifts. It makes absolutely zero sense for the Philadelphia Phillies to swap those two players positions, which is just further evidence that Nick Castanos is not talking about that move happening in Philadelphia. He’s basically saying, “Hey, if a team trades for me and they want me to play first base, I’m open to that.” Now, I’m going to read some more tea leaves here. If you thought you could potentially be traded and you wanted to stay with your team, your comments would probably be something along the lines of, “Yeah, I like it in Philly. I like my role on the team. I just want to keep working to try and help this team win.” Right? If they’ll have me, I’ll do what’s necessary to help this team try and win at the highest level. If you are open to a move to another team or even excited about the opportunity to go to another team because you don’t want to be with your current organization anymore, you make comments trying to make yourself more attractive to other teams. Hey, if you trade for me, I’ll play this other position. You’re not just trading for a right fielder. I will make something that is not my typical position work to get out of Philadelphia. That’s what I take this as. So, this is just another offseason comment that says to me Nick Castianos will not play for the Philadelphia Phillies in the 2026 season. I want something to be clear as well. I don’t blame Nick. This is one of those situations where it seems in everybody’s best interest for him to play somewhere else. He seems over it. The Phillies seem over it. It’s just it’s time for a breakup. It is. And I’m not an anti-Cast guy. I think that he’s underperformed his contract, but he has not stunk like some people will have you believe. He had an all-star season. He’s had some big moments in the postseason. He’s a guy that gets some unnecessary hate here in Philadelphia, but there’s no denying that we’re at the end of the road. You don’t make these comments and say, “Oh, I’m gonna take Bryce Harper’s position.” you make these comments to set up a move and make yourself seem more attractive as a versatile option for other teams to trade for. Now, when will this trade come down? This is another one of those moves where you have to get Kyle Schwarber locked up first because if you don’t have Schwarber, well, your whole payroll situation changes. You got to go try and find somebody else. And if that’s another outfielder, well then DH is open and maybe Castiano slots in at DH and then you move players around that way. Like the whole ecosystem of the Phillies shifts if you don’t sign Kyle Schwarber. So until that move is made, I don’t think you’re going to trade away Castianis. I don’t think you’re going to sign JT. I don’t think you’re going to sign Harrison Bader. So there is still a major roadblock holding up everything the Phillies could potentially do this off season. But once Schwarber gets signed and again the expectation is for him to sign according to Jeff Passen before the winter meetings are over which means the next three days. Yes, we are officially on Schwarber watch. Well, then things get really interesting for the Phillies where any move can happen at any time. The month of December is going to be wild. The next three days are going to be nuts. We got players saying they’ll change positions. We got teams bidding up superstar free agents whether they want them or not to try and make it more expensive for the Phillies. Every team in baseball, it seems like is in on Kyle Schwarber and JT. And who knows what Harrison Bader’s going to do. This is the wildest time of the off seasonason and we’ve got all of the information that you need to know about what’s going to happen next for the Phillies right here on Locked on Phillies. So, if you think Nick Castianis is the future first baseman of the Phillies, I think you’re crazy. If you think this is another step towards him potentially being traded, I think you’re very sane. That’s just where I stand on this. Every bit of information is a tea leaf to be read. And that’s what I think about Mick. We’ll see how it plays out. That’s all for today’s episode of Locked On Phillies. Again, we’re going to have Off the Poll tomorrow in the final segment. So, I’ll post that poll question. Which of the top three Japanese free agents do you want the Phillies to sign the most? And we’re also going to have a full winter meetings preview because tomorrow’s the first day and it’s going to be one hell of a three-day stretch. That’s all for today’s episode.
