This Is EXACTLY What the Red Sox Need

This is exactly what the Boston Red Sox need. We have reached our first milestone in the offseason as we have finally made it to the winter meetings. And we have a brand new slate of information surrounding the Boston Red Sox and now Bo Bashette, the all-star shortstop from the AL East rival, the Toronto Blue Jays. I’m here to break down all of the new information between these two parties and whether or not it seems like the Red Sox are one going to attempt to pursue Bob Bashette and two make an attempt to go out and sign him. If they do, will it be a successful move or will it be a bad move going forward? We’ll break down that as well as the other options at the premier positions on this episode of Red Sox Digest. But first, please do remember, scroll down and click that subscribe button. You guys have been killing it as of late and we appreciate all of it. So, thank you guys tremendously for everything. But now, let’s get to it and break down one of the more intriguing conversations of the entire off seasonason. And that is, can Bo end up in Boston? If you don’t know who Bo is, Bo Bashette. And this guy is an absolute freak. And I haven’t been able to say this for a long time because despite being from Orlando, Florida, Bo Bashette has played for the Toronto Blue Jays, a rival in the AL East to the Boston Red Sox. We know Bobette wasn’t fully healthy this past season, but when he returned, especially in October, he was lights out and there was never a moment that felt too big for him, not only offensively, but as well as defensively, despite being one of the worst statistical shorts stops in the league. He has a lot of promise and only being 27 years of age, it looks like he may be one of the better options in comparisons to some of the other names we’ll break down in this video on this in this free agency market as it seems like the Red Sox have done their source of trading up to this point in the offseason as they went out and acquired Sunny Gray and obviously Johan Oedo from the Pirates just in the last few days. It seems like there’s a check mark whether we like it or not in the Red Sox organization. There seems to be a check mark in the starting pitching conversation. Now, the bullpin, again, there could be additions. There probably will be additions later down the line. The pitching conversation isn’t fully closed for the offseason for the Boston Red Sox. At least, I hope not. But now, it feels like all of the focus and all of the attention for this Red Sox organization has been solely pointed to the bat conversation. And we’ve had this conversation at nauseium on this channel for the last month and some change about not even Bob Bashette, but Kyle Schwarber, Pete Alonzo, the return of Alex Bregman, and others that could be formidable pieces to this Red Sox team going into next season. Whether it’s at first base, third base, or possibly even at DH, it seems like the Red Sox are very much into the idea of at least signing one of those premier bats, whether it’s right-handed or left-handed. I’m here to tell you that Bob Bashette is by far and away the best option going forward for the Boston Red Sox. And it’s not just because of the overall production on the diamond, whether it’s offensively or defensively. And it’s not so much of the Alex Bregman conversation in the sense of leadership on and off the diamond that you’re going to get, but it’s the fact there’s also a piece of it, I should say, that you’re taking him away from an AL East rival, a team that just made it to the World Series that looks like they’re only trying to get better this off season in the Toronto Blue Jays. If the Red Sox were able to go out there and acquire someone like Bo Bashette, he wouldn’t be able to return the blue or the Toronto. Obviously, that would be a win for the Boston Red Sox. Not only would the Blue Jays get worse, but the Red Sox would get substantially better. So, we’re going to cite this article from Will Salmon that was also co-written by Ken Rosenthal. We all know and love him. And again, if you’d like to read the entirety of it, I’ll tag it down below in the description and please go do um we’re going to focus on the Bo Bashette conversation as Bo in Boston was really the segue into this entire piece of the article. Retaining free agent third baseman Alex Bregman is a priority for the Boston Red Sox, but some with the club view Bo Bashette, previously a division rival with the Toronto Blue Jays, as an intriguing alternative. Now, intriguing alternative is a hell of a way to phrase this as this is a very, very intriguing alternative, the in alternative if you will, for the Boston Red Sox when it comes down to the third base conversation. We’ve heard the conversations about Pete Lonzo and Kyle Schwarber. We’re not even going to bring up their names up to this point. They are first baseman/DH. Schwarber is not playing any defense. Pete Alonzo is a first baseman for the next few years before he before he fully revolves to a DH full-time. Bobette is not in that boat. And Alex Bregman isn’t either, but Alex Bregman is playing third base. There was conversations about short, conversations about second base early in the start of last regular season. Bo Bashette could play third, short, or second base as brought or as broken down in this article. While Bett’s defensive metrics at shortstop are among the worst in the majors, some teams still see him as viable at that position. According to people briefed on his market, Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Brezlo is on record as saying that Trevor Story will will remain at short in 2026 if the Red Sox sign Bette. Marcelo Meyer presumably would man third base and Bette could play second. Wei’s Rob Bradford first mentioned Bashette as a possibility for the Red Sox last month. Peter Lonzo and Kish Warber are among the other free agent hitters the Red Sox are considering. Again, we’ve broken this down at a sickening amount of pace over the last month and some change about Kyos Warber, about Pete Alonzo, about Alex Bregman because if you can picture this Red Sox team as currently constructed and implement those names, not all of them obviously because we are the Red Sox are not the Los Angeles Dodgers and it there’s no way you can get all three of them. That just it’s impossible. They could go out there and acquire one if not two of these four names. Bobette, Alex Bregman, Pete Alonzo, and Kyle Schwarber. And this Red Sox team would be oddson favorites to win the World Series next season. And that is not hyperbole. That is not an exaggeration. That is real. This team made it to the wild card despite having a lack of pitching in comparison to everyone else and being led by a 21-year-old at the time. Now he’s 22 obviously in uh Roman Anthony, he’s about to be 22, I should say. and he was even active during that time and during those wildcard games and bad defense really resulted in the Red Sox being eliminated. And that is the biggest conversation point to why Bob Bashette would not fit in Boston. And really, it’s the only conversation to why Bob Bashette wouldn’t work in Boston. If you go into an offseason, there’s a checklist of things you have to accomplish because of what went wrong the season prior or in the years prior for that matter, depending on the organization. The Red Sox number one problem was defense. And you may be saying, “No, Houston, it was the pitching, whether it was starting or coming out of the bullpen or if it was the bats and not having enough right-handed batters or not having a good enough left-handed batters through the line.” Whatever you may want to argue, I’m going to make the argument that it was defense. Why? Well, they got eliminated in that wild card game where Early was on the mound for his first postseason game and he was lights out. He had a 68 or a 66 whip. that takes into account the defense played behind him and the runs that were then given up. It he did not he was not dealt a fair hand in that game because of the lack of defense that was played behind him. And I know Bob Bashette like we mentioned earlier based off this article and written by Sammon as well as Rosenthal and also just looking at the metrics themselves whether the underlying metrics or the overall stats surrounding Bob Bashette. The offensive numbers are fantastic but the defensive numbers are horrific. Now, could you move him from shortstop to second base or even possibly third base and h unlock him just a bit and take some pressure off of him? Possibly. I’m not going to say no. That that would just be really naive of me, I believe. But I’m not saying it’s going to get any easier. They’re playing in the infield for a major league team on the major league level. If like that’s not an easy task. I don’t get like if you’re good at it, you’re good at it and you’re very good at your fielding percentage is very very high. Bobette was not in that case last year. Am I saying it’s impossible for him to get better defensively? Absolutely not. He made it to the pros. He’s made it to the major leagues by getting better in specific things that are tasked to him. He can obviously get better. Everyone can get better in specific areas if they work at those areas. Offensively, this Red Sox team would terrorize everyone in the league. AL East I don’t care if you want to go AL NL I the show and the entirety of the Los Angeles Dodgers I you choose the opponent Bob Bashette on this team as currently constructed gives teams nightmares and honestly the conversation about Alex Bregman is intriguing but Alex Bregman opted out of $40 million a year for the next two years. Why? Because he wants more years on his contract. Why would you give someone who has already surpassed the age of 30 this the type of contract you would present to someone along the lines of Bob Bashette who is 27 years old and may not have the experience and the leadership of someone of Alex Bregman but if you look at the offensive production this young man rates and there’s no way around it and if you put him in Fenway Park where mind you he has been absolutely dominant maybe not to the level of an Alex Bregman through Alex Bregman’s nine years of his career sorry guys I trying to get to this so you can actually see in the entirety of it. But please look at the base on balls and play numbers 389. Look at the average. Where did it go? Where did it base uh batting average? 308. This is specifically in Fenway for Bob Bashett’s career. This is not a one or a three-game series in Fenway. This is not one year’s. This is his career. The games played in Fenway. He has excelled. And imagine if he was playing half of the games at Fenway Park. these numbers would be inflated. Last year, he hit north of 300 at 311 with an OBP of uh 360. He was great offensively, and yes, he did chase just a bit, but the strikeout percentages weren’t all that bad. The only question mark would really be the walks he would fit in in Boston because of the lack of defense and the lacks of walks he really works. But offensively, this kid would grow at from 27 on to probably 35, assuming he gets close to an eight plus year contract with whatever team ends up going out and signing him. This is very intriguing for the Boston Red Sox. And honestly, I would rather see Bob Bashette in a Red Sox jersey next season than Alex Bregman. Why? Because the money and the amount of time and tenure that is going to be put on these contracts for either of the assets, Bregman or Bo Bashette, they’re going to be substantial. That’s the reason Bregman opted out. The three-year thing for 40 million a year. Like that is a crazy price tag for someone as getting as old as Bregman is. If you could go out there while Bregman’s looking for five, six, seven years to ride out into the sunset and just finish off his career with this last organization, that’s awesome. and the tenure he had in Boston was phenomenal. And I wish he would never have opted out. But right now with this with this opportunity, a younger version of an infielder, a right-handed infielder who may not be great defensively, but maintain such great abilities offensively. This could be someone that could grow alongside Roman and Marcelo and Cample and Jiren Durant and these other great young pieces in Boston and be a part of a great great organization for the next six, seven, eight plus years. If you look at Sprack, they expect him to make eight year or get an eight-year contract worth roughly worth $186.4 million. And if you look at the comparable players and then go off the base calculated value, 10 years, 259 million, which would break down to $259 a year for Bob Bashette. A slight overpay from the overall assumed market value or the calculated calculated market value for Bobette through spot track. I would love to know your overall thoughts and opinions. Do you like this move? Who would you rather have, Alex Bregman or Bo Bashette going forward? Take into account the contract and the length of which that contract would most likely look like and overall the dollar value presented to either of these players as well as the overall production on the diamond. I’ll see you guys on the next episode of Red Sox Digest. Thank you guys for watching.

  1. I guess they are waiting to hear where Bregman will sign? Bichette would be rock solid at 2B for 10 years. I think Bichette wants to stay in Toronto. Regardless they still need a big right handed power bat.

  2. I don’t know why you think this makes any sense. Why would you not sign the guy Who’s already been in established Red Sox player a leader in the locker room and someone who wants to be here he made us better last year why would we go after Bo instead of him?

  3. I agree that Bo should be target 1. He is essentially a younger Ketel Marte at 2B. Mayer to 3B. The next move is either or. Target a Ragan or J Jones or even a reach like Euery Perez. The or part is finding a 1B via trade and standing pat with thr arms. I think Oakland has a guy that makes sense. Duran and Perales for Solderstrom. Duran makes the juggernaut A's offense even better and Parales can get experienced out of the 5 spot. Sure a Blies or Romero or a Huberstine to make the deal work for Oakland. Solderstrom may have looked better playing in a minor league park but is a C who moved to 1B and now LF. Duran is abetter fit. Abreu is a one for one essentially matching Solderstrom production with GG D The other guy I like is Aranda from Tampa. The have Issac and Morgan blocked by Diaz and Aranda at 1B. Maybe take on Lowe or even Shane McClanahan with Aranda for Abreu Tolle Arias. Could Tampa say no to control? Won't know unless they try
