The Pittsburgh Steelers are not going to fire coach Mike Tomlin, but they do have a significant decision to make early next year. After this season, Tomlin's contract will have two years remaining on it — 2026 and a team option in 2027. But according to league sources, the Steelers must decide whether to pick up the option on Tomlin's contract by March 1.

  3. This still leaves a real possibility of Tomlin stepping down and “reevaluating” then returning elsewhere.

  5. Yall gotta read the article before you wig out. He has a 2027 option on his deal. They must decide by this coming March 1st whether to pick it up. If they decline it that means he’s going into the last year of his contract. And I think we all know no one is going to be okay with him coaching on his last year. So therein lies the decision to part ways or not.

    It’s absolutely possible he’s gone after this season. If they don’t pick up that option it makes 0 sense to play out next year with an aging roster and potentially rookie QB just to “see what happens”. If they don’t want to pick up the option I’d expect both sides to be seeking an out. We’ll know shortly after the season. A lot of football to be played still and a lot of the story left to unfold.

  7. Its an easy decision…you dont pick it up and force him into a “contract year”. If he steps up, you signed him to an extension. If its more of the same, you move on

  8. I’ll be shocked if they fired him but they’re not going to say “Yeah we’re firing that bum” in the middle of a season where the playoffs are possible if they do end up doing so.

  13. Everyone should know the Organization won’t fire their head coach mid season. We knew that if anything was to happen, it would be after the our season is over. The likely scenario is Tomlin resigns after or they decide to not pick up his final year option.

  17. I dont think firing Tomlin was ever going to happen. At this point I will watch highlights and thats it. The games arent even fun to watch. Its weird to say this but even if they were last place in the AFC North, if the games were gritty and exciting I would be fine with that. Its the same gd game every single time and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesnt. The wins dont feel like satisfying wins unlike in the past.

  19. He would need to have several consecutive losing seasons to get fired. From Rooney’s perspective the team is still in first place and can win the division, so why would he fire him?

    The only way Tomlin leaves is by his own choice. Maybe if the fans chant it every home game he’ll go, but he’s got like 16 million reasons to not care about chants.

  22. Say what you want about the Rooneys, but they are loyal and wouldn’t do anything to embarrass Tomlin like firing him. If they don’t want him they will let his contract expire

Im of the opinion that we’re in an Andy Reid in Philly situation and lean towards letting Mike go (actually what I really want is to trade him) but itd be downright disrespectful and wrong of the organization to fire him in season after all this time. At the worst you have to let him finish the year, especially considering theres a realistic shot at the playoffs. Whoever wants him fired this second, thats not the way.

  33. They’re going to decline that option and one day, there is going to be a “The Last Dance” style documentary made of Tomlin trying to achieve 9-8 and a one and done playoff exit one last time in 2026.
