The Pittsburgh Steelers are not going to fire coach Mike Tomlin, but they do have a significant decision to make early next year. After this season, Tomlin's contract will have two years remaining on it — 2026 and a team option in 2027. But according to league sources, the Steelers must decide whether to pick up the option on Tomlin's contract by March 1.

Not surprised, just disappointed
If you actually expected Rooney to fire Tomlin idk what to tell you.
This still leaves a real possibility of Tomlin stepping down and “reevaluating” then returning elsewhere.
Then it’s not even worth watching them. They have become such a stubborn, stupid organization who lives in their own fears.
Yall gotta read the article before you wig out. He has a 2027 option on his deal. They must decide by this coming March 1st whether to pick it up. If they decline it that means he’s going into the last year of his contract. And I think we all know no one is going to be okay with him coaching on his last year. So therein lies the decision to part ways or not.
From the article:
“There will be organizational meetings and decisions that occur, but not until after this season is complete, with a full body of work for all appropriate parties to review,
sources said.
And if neither side has any commitment to the other beyond 2026, it would bring into a play a whole host of options.
So despite Steelers fans’ calls to fire Tomlin during last week’s loss to the Buffalo Bills, the Steelers aren’t considering that. His and their future is in Baltimore on Sunday, when the Steelers will be playing the Ravens for first place in the AFC North.
That is partly why the team isn’t even willing to consider any coaching options now. There are five regular-season games left, and Pittsburgh is focused on the task at hand, not what might or might not happen in the future.”
It’s absolutely possible he’s gone after this season. If they don’t pick up that option it makes 0 sense to play out next year with an aging roster and potentially rookie QB just to “see what happens”. If they don’t want to pick up the option I’d expect both sides to be seeking an out. We’ll know shortly after the season. A lot of football to be played still and a lot of the story left to unfold.
Watch tomlin win the superbowl this real
Its an easy decision…you dont pick it up and force him into a “contract year”. If he steps up, you signed him to an extension. If its more of the same, you move on
I’ll be shocked if they fired him but they’re not going to say “Yeah we’re firing that bum” in the middle of a season where the playoffs are possible if they do end up doing so.
Mutual separation / trade. MT will agree to opt out.
Chanting Fire Tomlin and booing Renegade once didn’t get the job done?
Have we contemplated a strongly worded letter perchance? Permaybe?
It’s up to Mike to walk away with honour. Rooney shouldnt have to fire him. Be a classy guy and know it’s finished and leave. Do the right thing.
redditors are the biggest collection of intelligence in the history of mankind
Everyone should know the Organization won’t fire their head coach mid season. We knew that if anything was to happen, it would be after the our season is over. The likely scenario is Tomlin resigns after or they decide to not pick up his final year option.
Question to everybody???… would you approve of Mike Tomlin if had a complete respected competent and efficient coaching staff around him or is this a complete funeral for him?
Gives his some time to find a nice cushy landing pad, and another couple years to fuck around with his bullshit mediocre scheme on the backs of the Steelers and th fans
So it’s root for the Ravens and Henry to go for 300 yards and beat the Steelers twice to get to fire Tomlin?
I dont think firing Tomlin was ever going to happen. At this point I will watch highlights and thats it. The games arent even fun to watch. Its weird to say this but even if they were last place in the AFC North, if the games were gritty and exciting I would be fine with that. Its the same gd game every single time and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesnt. The wins dont feel like satisfying wins unlike in the past.
Extended to 2050
He would need to have several consecutive losing seasons to get fired. From Rooney’s perspective the team is still in first place and can win the division, so why would he fire him?
The only way Tomlin leaves is by his own choice. Maybe if the fans chant it every home game he’ll go, but he’s got like 16 million reasons to not care about chants.
Tomlin can still resign. He is well aware of his resume and potential job opportunities.
Not really a surprise. I’m just hoping we trade him or we don’t not extend him and this is his last few years with us. I’m tired
Say what you want about the Rooneys, but they are loyal and wouldn’t do anything to embarrass Tomlin like firing him. If they don’t want him they will let his contract expire
Keep the chants up. There’s enough fans at road games to also get heard by the tvs.
He will be booed off the field in two weeks.
It’s every Steeler fan’s responsibility to absolutely ruin the draft with fire Tomlin chants. Cmon guy, you can do it.
JeTS trade for him. Reunite whit his QB Justin Fields. They traded Sauce Gardner. Picks are in. New QB
You know where you herd it first
Im of the opinion that we’re in an Andy Reid in Philly situation and lean towards letting Mike go (actually what I really want is to trade him) but itd be downright disrespectful and wrong of the organization to fire him in season after all this time. At the worst you have to let him finish the year, especially considering theres a realistic shot at the playoffs. Whoever wants him fired this second, thats not the way.
**No shit!**
I’m shocked that a team not known for firing coaches is not going to fire a coach.
Can they at least fire the coaching staff so it’s not the same old shit
How shocked the national media will be when we give him his 3rd undeserved 3 year extension lmaooo.
Just lose out then we can fire him
They’re going to decline that option and one day, there is going to be a “The Last Dance” style documentary made of Tomlin trying to achieve 9-8 and a one and done playoff exit one last time in 2026.
Tomlin needs to walk away
So….. More of the same.
It’s the ‘Standard’ 😩
I’m certain Tomlin has family secrets on the Rooneys. He’s holding the entire city hostage
Well no shit
If you think Rooney is communicating with Adam Schefter, I have a bridge to sell you
Idc what they do as long as there is some change.
I’d almost more expect one of those “mutually agree to part ways” kind of a situation
I bet he’ll “retire” just like Arians did
This thing of not firing a coach since 1941 is demented.
I’d like to see Bill Belichick have great performance with Matt Canada & Terryl Austin.
