Got this from the NBC Boston insta, it's from Phil Perry's Next Pats podcast not sure exactally which episode.
I will even admit that pre-draft I was Williams>Maye just because of the obvious Mahomes-style that Williams played with. But hindsight makes this above decision seem real silly even with the bears looking good this year.

We both walked off with a qb for the future. We just got the better one
The second Caleb ran into the stands and cried in his mom’s arms after losing a big game I was out on Caleb Williams. Didn’t know enough about maye other than he was pretty big and could run and throw the ball which was the opposite of Mac Jones, so I was sold.
Danny drafting Tatum at #3 all over again. Gotta love it.
Never pick a QB from USC – they all suck.
Poles is such a weird case. He’s done some good shit as GM but has also done some really stupid shit. This is just full on bizarre.
Caleb has been fine. He flashes. He’s not the reason that teams winning. The Pats are nothing without Drake. I wanted Maye based off his tape and what was said about him. I don’t know shit. That they’d laugh at his tape is crazy and I hope Poles has to wear this story at some point.
Chris White might need more of a voice in that room. Just a thought
I really liked Maye coming out, I never understood why everyone was so critical of his footwork and bad throws. He played at North Carolina not Georgia or LSU. His team wasn’t great and the talent left him as a one man show basically. People were way too harsh on him. Trubisky and the QB before him didn’t do him any favors
If I remember correctly, Caleb Williams was the consensus #1 pick by everybody. There was zero talk about the Patriots having any chance to get him. And Maye was good in 2024, but I don’t think there was anything that hinted at Maye developing into a top 5 QB (definitely not MVP candidate). We can’t really say that Maye was definitively the better QB after their rookie season.
Also, we cannot ignore the impact of Josh McDaniels. McDaniels has a gift for developing QBs. Even ignoring Brady, a bunch of Brady backups ended up having decent careers in the NFL (being a journeyman QB like Cassel or Hoyer is an extremely good outcome for very late round or undrafted players). People talk about the gap between a top 5 QB vs someone like a rank 15 QB. The same is likely true for coaches too. Who knows what Williams would look like if he were paired with McDaniels. And don’t forget about Jayden Daniels who is stuck with Washington, the same organization that ran RG3 into the ground.
Every one of my friends are Bear fans. They cope so hard and greatly over exaggerate how “well” Caleb is playing.
Thank god we got Drake Maye.
I know systems are very important for players. I’d be curious to see how each of the first round QBs would do on another team. Caleb on the Broncos, Bo Nix on the Pats, Maye on the Bears etc. I know that’s not possible but it would be interesting to see.
