Could the Cincinnati Reds Bring Kyle Schwarber Home?

Imagine this for a second. A kid from Middletown, Ohio. A lifelong Reds fan coming home to play at Great American Ballpark. Kyle Schwarber, one of the most dangerous power hitters in baseball, is officially a free agent. And now there’s real talk, real smoke that the Cincinnati Reds might actually make a run at bringing him home. But here was the comments that uh he had to say uh at that event. I grew up going to games there. I grew up uh sitting in the bleachers and watching a lot of games and uh you know I think the the kid would be you know excited right you have your hometown team that’s that’s calling. So let’s break down the odds of the Reds signing Schwarber, what he’d mean to the lineup, what’s standing in the way. And at the end of the video, I’m gonna show you some of my favorite Kyle Schwarber baseball cards from my collection. All right, let’s jump into this. First, a quick reminder for everyone who doesn’t know, Kyle Schwarber is a local guy, born in Middletown, not even an hour from Cincinnati. grew up a Reds fan, grew up in Red’s country, grew up watching the same players that a lot of the people that live around here did. On top of that, he’s one of the most consistent power bats in baseball. No matter where he plays, he hits bombs. He gets on base, he changes a lineup the minute he steps into it. So, let’s talk about what Schwarber would mean for the Reds if this actually happened. First off, the Reds need a dude in the middle of the order. A real proven left-handed thumper. Schwarber fits that perfectly. Second, imagine his swing in Great American ballpark. The guy could put up 45 plus home runs in his sleep there. And don’t underestimate the hometown story. You bring a local kid home, that’s instant excitement, instant ticket sales and instant energy. The fan base would go nuts. Now, let’s be real for a second. This is not a fantasy. The Reds have been linked to him. But what are the actual odds that it happens? The reason it could happen is because the Reds need a bat badly. Also, Schwarber has real ties here. He’s talked before about his Ohio roots. If he wants a homecoming story, the Reds are the only team that can give him that. Why it might not happen, his contract is going to be big, and the Reds would have to really stretch their payroll. They have a lot of holes to fill already on the roster. They need some bullpen pitching and they need some depth on the bench. And let’s be honest, big market teams are all calling Schwarber. So, here’s my honest take on the odds. I think the chance is real, but I think it’s still a long shot. If I had to put a number on it, I’d say 30%. Not impossible, not a sure things. But if Schwarber wants to be home and the Reds want to make a statement, the stars could align. I’ll say this, if the Reds actually pulled this off, it would be one of the coolest homecoming stories that we’ve seen in a long time. All right, y’all. As promised, let’s take a look at some of my favorite Kyle Schwarber cards that are in my collection that I’ve picked up over the years. We’re going to start with I think this is 2015 Bowman Inception. This is my only Kyle Schwarber autograph. And man, I love love this set. Such a cool image right here. And I just love the background with that baseball. Check it out. There’s the back, man. That’s when he was catching before he became I think he was an outfielder. Then he went to uh the DH where he’s really excelled. Uh here is his first Bowman and it is a refractor. Look how beautiful that card is right there. Man, I love that one. There’s the back. What a hitter, man. What a hitter this guy turned out to be. And this card, man, I was at a show probably, I don’t know, three or more years ago, can’t remember. It was at East Skate and this guy had a ton of dollar boxes. And I believe you could get five for six bucks. And this is when the Kyle Schwarber market was pretty down. And I just picked up a bunch of cards from him, man. A bunch of Kyle Schwarbers. And this ended up being one of them. This is a refractor. And I’m pretty sure it is an image variation. Uh I need to look the price up on this. I’m sure it’s more than a dollar or I think I paid less than a dollar for it. But what a beautiful beautiful card, man. Getting the curtain call there at Wrigley. Here’s the back. It is a refractor. And uh what a awesome image variation that is. Next, here’s a gold card. To tops gold rookie card. I like that gold design. Um that year was pretty cool. Not too bad. This is numbered out of 2016. Here is a gold foil version of his rookie card. I might have pulled that one out of a pack. I can’t remember. Thought that was a cool card as well. Here’s another image variation. This one’s on the uh paper tops. Another rookie card. Um, pretty cool, man. Love that one. And then this one, this was another one out of that dollar box. And I don’t know if it’s real or not, but it’s his paper rookie card. And it’s got a signature. And I don’t know. You guys let me know. What do you think? Is that a real autograph of Kyle Schwarber? But I thought for a buck or less, uh, it was definitely worth the chance. Like that one a lot. And then I got I got multiple of his regular paper rookies. Uh here’s a couple of his chrome rookie cards right there. And then I thought these were cool, man. I bought I mean, see, I’m better than Andy over at Andy’s Attic. I mean, he says two is better than one. How about three? Three is better than one. Check that out. And this is some kind of uh rookie variation, but it says New Era. I don’t know if this was some kind of giveaway from New Era hats or uh what this card was, but thought it was cool. Picked that up in that dollar deal, dollar box deal. Um here’s his Topps debut. I think it’s got a better image than his regular Topps rookie card. Really like that one. Here’s another one that was in that in those dollar boxes. This is his museum club rookie or museum collection rookie. Sorry about that. And this is numbered out of let’s see 199. Really nice card there. There’s the back of that one. Here’s a couple. Well, here’s this Bowman Bowman chrome rookie. And then here’s another Bowman chrome rookie. So, I don’t know. I don’t understand. They got the same number, I believe. Number no, number 31 and 122. So, I guess he had two Bowman Chrome rookies. Here’s his Top’s finest rookie card. I believe that’s a refractor. Even though it does not say refractor on the back, still shiny and nice. Beautiful card. Uh here’s his Topps gold label. Believe this is just a class one, but a really cool image of him right there. Got a couple of these uh Bowman Platinum rookies. He’s got some nice shine to him. Here’s a Gypsy Queen rookie. I think this was in that dollar box as well. The back of that. Not sure if they still make Gypsy Queen or not, but I I used to like that. Here’s like a little throwback of the uh what is this? The 90 92 93 design. I should know that. There’s the back. Must be some kind of insert. Uh I don’t know if that’s out of What’s that out of? Is that out of archives? I’m not sure. Not good with the modern. I used to know modern, but then I went to vintage a couple years ago and oh, I done forgot all this stuff, but thought that was a cool card. Here’s another rookie of him. This one’s with Carl Edwards Jr., the rookie stars. Like that one. There’s the back of that. Got the old 67 design. Here’s another card that was in the uh dollar box. This is a elite series from Panini, a rookie and it’s numbered out of 999. Got the little dots there like a disco ball. Here’s the back. Beautiful, beautiful card right there. These were cool. These were in that dollar in the dollar box as well. I believe you got these at the national these paninis. uh bought both of them that were in there cuz I mean this is something you don’t see too often at card shows or Yeah, it says the national here. National VIP. So I’m assuming these were given out maybe in packs back then. Never been to a national before, so I don’t know. Here’s some cheap cards right here. This is a rated rookie out of Donnis. It’s kind of cool seeing him in his catcher uniform. Here’s another catcher card. Uh, this is out of Panini. What is this? Diamond Kings. And then one of these is the image variation. I don’t know which one is. Could be either one. I don’t know. But they’re cool cards. Here’s another Donner Studio. Like a little studio. Um, I don’t know if that’s an insert. Yeah, looks like an insert. S6. Pretty cool image of him right there. And then last but not least is this another Panini product. It’s this uh relic. You can see a little bit of the um stripe there on this Cubs Uni. This one is numbered out of 49. I think I picked that up pretty cheap. I don’t think this was in the dollar box find, but got this at a card show I think for a couple bucks back in the day. Really like that one. So that’s it, guys. Thank you so much for watching this video and let me know what you think in the comments. I mean, do the Reds have a chance at getting him? Should they go all in to bring Schwarber home? Is it too risky for him? How much would it cost him? But man, I hope it happens. 1. I think the Reds should bring back the greatest Red of all time and a native to Cincinnati; Schottzie. :o) I wonder how much money it will take to sign Schwarber. His game is not my style of play that I prefer, but he is immensely popular and delivers those HRs. If you got his auto for a buck, it was well worth it. I heard that Eric Davis applied for a job with the Reds to be the new Gapper mascot, but he was turned down as they felt he would end up on the IR within the first month.

  2. I really like the cards Rob! I wish I could be as optimistic as you, but I don’t see it happening. The Reds have one remaining spot on the 40 man and I don’t see the Castellini’s shelling out the big money for the long term contract Kyle is gonna want. I hope I’m wrong, Boy do I!

  3. A fun thought experiment, Rob, but I question whether the Reds can afford him, or how much of a hometown discount he'd give them. Have there been any quotes from management that they could make it work?

  4. Great share Rob. Gotta love seeing the different Schwarber cards. Love tbe 2016 Topps Image Varation. I do not think we will ever see him with tbe Cubs again so hopefully he goes to your Reds. Enjoyed
