But getting into today’s episode, we’re going to look at four trade targets for the Atlanta Braves that similar to what we did last week. We looked at four cheap free agent options. We’re going to look at four cheap trade options the Braves could make this off seasonason to upgrade their team. Today’s episode is brought to you by FanDuel if you want to be right in the middle of the action this season. Visit fan.com and place your NFL live bets all season long. As I mentioned last week, we looked at four cheap free agent options that could work for the Atlanta Braves. And I like that episode and I thought that not to toot my own horn, but I thought just that idea and that practice of staying within a relatively cheap budget this off season, but also just upgrading more so the depth. Look, again, you’ve been with me all offseason. You’re part of our everydayers here. you know that I’m the one that’s been, you know, scre screaming looking for that big addition. I still want it. I think they can do it. This franchise should be able to do it, but it’s one of those things until it happens, I’m not going to believe that it’s actually going to happen. So, we’re looking at some of those more budget friendly options that the Braves could look at to build out the depth of this team, which I think is highly, highly important for the Atlanta Braves. So, we’re going to look at four cheap trade options this time around. It also sounds like the trade market is picking up a lot more right now than the free agent market. Not really sure why that seems to be the case. There does seem to be some hesitancy from maybe GMs and players as well to sign long-term deals not knowing how the CBA negotiations are going to take place. But that’s also affecting some of the trade markets. For instance, guys who have two years of control, you might not get that second year or you might only get half of that second year. So, I think there is some some pause hesitation on some of these free agent signings and to an extent some of these trades because of upcoming CBA, which is something that a lot of people asked me all throughout this season and I said I’m not I don’t I don’t know and we’re not really sure until we see how things play out. And I don’t again I don’t think it’s to an alarming degree. I think players are still going to sign big deals. I think you’re still going to see trades, but I do think GMs are having to evaluate that and am I if I’m trading this guy who has two years of control, am I giving him value for two years of control, not really knowing what that second year is going to look like? Or if you’re paying a free agent player for, you know, two years deal, well, am I really only paying him for for one year? And if you’re a you’re a free agent, maybe you only want to sign a one-year deal. if you’re not going to get more than two or three years because you might want to wait till after 2027. Now, if you’re published and those guys, Kyle Schwarber, you know, you’re getting big bucks either way. I’m talking more about guys who are on the fringe that may only get a at most a two, threeyear deal. They’re kind of in an awkward situation. But putting all that aside, for this exercise today, we’re going to look the same thing we did last time. We’re going to look for a couple of bats. We’re going to look for a starter. We’re going to look for a bullpin piece. I’m ignoring Twins players in this exercise. one. We’ve talked about Buckton a lot and the Twins said they’re not going to trade those guys. Joe Ryan, um, you know, Bailey, I didn’t mention Bailey over, but Pablo Lopez, they said they’re going to hang on to their guys for now. Whether or not, I believe that. Uh, but I do think we are at least going to ignore them for this exercise. I’m also going to try to stay away from NL East players just because those deals can be a bit tricky. But I do think there are some intriguing options in the NL East like Mackenzie Gore, like Edward Cabrera. And again, we’re looking at players who are cheap in terms of monetary cost, yes, but also prospect cost. Guys that I don’t think you’ll have to give up a ton for that you won’t have to give up. Hurston Wal, J.R. Richie, Cam Kimiti, Diego Torrrens, you know, basically those are those are really my four guys that I’d like to hold on to if I can. I think you have to go up any of those guys for these players we’re going to talk about, except maybe the first player that we’re going to talk about, and that is Willard Abrau. 26-y old left-handed hitter under control with the Red Sox for four more years through arbitration. 3.1 and 2.4 F4 the past two seasons. A career 115 WRC plus with a slash line of 256, 326, 465. But here’s the key with William Abrau. career verse right-handed pitchers 265 336 492 an 827 OPS and a 125 WRC plus 9.7% walk rate it is a 26.4% 4% strikeout rate, which I was a little surprised to see for how good he is against right-handed pitcher and how much he is touted as a right-handed killer. You know, a near over 26% strikeout rate against righties is not fantastic, but everything else there is really good. Now, on the flip side of this for Will Abrau, 62 W wrc plus against left-handed pitching. This is a strict platoon player. you are you’re you’re putting him in the lineup whenever there’s a righty out there, which is the majority of the time. The other positives though for a Breu is that great range and a great arm in right field. Obviously, the Braves have somebody that has a great arm. Many will discount the range of Ronald. I think that’s a bit overblown. I think he gets bad jumps, takes bad routes. I still think he gets to the baseball, but he is a very good defensive outfielder and can play center. He didn’t last year and he only played two innings there in 2024, but has the ability to play center field. And I’ve talked about it a lot this off season. And as I’m looking for that that DH outfield type of bat that the Braves need to add, I would love it to be somebody who can play center. And I think Abrau is somebody that could play center. You would rather put him in a corner, but certainly can play center. Now, as good as he is in right, I’m assuming hoping he can be just as as good in in a corner in left field. But if you have to when you put out, you know, a Breu, Michael Harris, Ronald out there, you know, put D Pro Profar obviously in the DH spot. However you want to consider that, it also gives you the opportunity to put Ronald in the DH spot a good bit more knowing how great that ABRU is out there defensively in right field. Speed is average. Eight and six stolen bases the last two years. But again, I’m I’m bumping everybody’s stolen base numbers up with Anton Richardson, hoping that that gets better. I do think it is somebody that, you know, if he played enough and if he wanted to, could be a 15, 20 stolen base type of guy because of his age, price, and control though, this is likely going to be the most expensive option that we’re going to talk about here today. But we know the Red Sox are likely going to trade either Jiren Durant or Willard Abrau. I’m I’m thinking Abrau might be the cheaper of the two options, but e I don’t mind either one of those guys. I’m targeting a Breu though, just because I want to get that guy that that I know is going to do something great in hitting right-handed pitching. Not that Duran can’t do that, and Duran also brings some other tools. I I mean, between those two, I don’t have a huge preference, but just for this exercise, because I’m assuming that Abrau is maybe a little bit cheaper in prospect cost that I’m going with him in this one. And then the other hitter I’m going after is one we’ve talked about a lot as well, and that is Brendan Donovan of the Cardinals. 28-year-old left-handed hitter, two years of control left under arbitration, 127, 118, 115, 119 WRC plus over the last four years. I did not realize how good of an offensive player that Brennan Donovan has been. 2.6, 1.5, 3.2, and 2.9 F4 in those same years. So, he has been a pretty consistent contributor. Only once has he played more than 126 games in a season, though. He has been somebody that hasn’t always had a a true home, but has just kind of moved around as a super utility guy. This is a low power career 129 ISO, career average around 160, 170, but high contact bat, a career 13.5% strikeout rate while still taking his walks. A career 9.1% walk rate. And this is the type of bat that we’ve seen the Braves start to transition towards a little bit more. Not much speed to speak of. 15 total stolen bases over those four years. Really belongs at second base, but can play third, can play short. He’s played everywhere except for center field catcher and obviously pitcher. So, he can play all over the field for you, but most likely needs to be at at second base, but can also back you up at shortstop if you make this move. For me, Dubon is your everyday shortstop. I’m not I’m not trading for Donovan and putting him as my everyday shorts stop. I’m starting him there a good bit, especially against, you know, right-handed pigeon, which you’re going to see a lot, but I’m starting him against righties every now and then. I’m bringing him off the bit bench to pinch hit for Dubon against tough righties and then inserting him at at shortstop. I do think there’s the opportunity for him to play a good bit of shorts stop, but if I’m making this move, unless I’m going out and getting another shorts stop and I don’t think there’s a well, I would love to just build out the best depth possible and you could put Dubon and Donovan on your your bench and still go get a shortstop in a fantasy world that we’re living in. But assuming that’s not the case, I don’t think there’s a need for both Donovan and Dupon on the roster. Again, we’ll be great. I would love that that depth and just go out and build as much depth as you can. But I think if you were to go acquire a Donovan, then Dubon is your everyday shortstop and you’re giving Donovan opportunities at shortstop every now and then at second, put him in a corner spot, put him in the DH, but you’re just having that super utility type of guy that can come in, you know, start four games for you a week, you know, come in off the bench when you need a good at bat. I just really like I really like Donovan the player and I would love to have that but I can’t have him as my everyday shorts stop. So in this scenario, Dubon is your shorts stop. All right, those are the bats. Let me know what you think about those guys. We’ll have some honorable mentions as well coming in here in a minute. Next, we’ll get into the pitching side of things. A starter and a reliever that I’m not as excited about, but we’ll talk about it here next. NFL Sundays move fast. one big play and suddenly everything feels a difference. Looking at four cheap trade options that could work. And the next one here I’m not as excited about, but I’m going to give you some alternatives. And this is Kyle Freeland. 32-year-old left-handed pitcher from the Rockies set to make 16 million in 26. Has a $17 million investing option for 2027 if he reaches 170 innings pitched this year. He hasn’t done that very often in his career. And if he’s getting to 170 innings for you, then it’s the 17 million is probably worth it for 2027. A career fi 4.54 4.54 erra in just over 1,200 innings. His best ability has been his durability. He’s made 29 or more starts in three of the last four seasons. He’s he threw over 200 innings back in 2018, which was his best season by far. Looks like he was going to be that pitcher that the Rockies have always uh been looking for. They’ve had hints of guys here and there in the past and being a Colorado guy, you thought this was going to be their ace for the future. They locked him up, but unfortunately has not turned out that way. Uh, since then, the most he’s thrown is 174 and two/3 innings, which he threw in 2022. The other great trait that Kyle Freeland has is that he doesn’t walk anybody. Just a 5.3% and 5.4% walk rate the last two seasons. Uh, he hasn’t had a walk rate above 7% since 2021. So, throws a lot of strikes. Maybe with that RA, he should throw less strikes, but at least he’s not walking everybody out there. Now, you think a pitcher from Colorado, you look at the home road splits and think maybe if he gets out of Colorado, he could be a good pitcher. His career road ERA, though, is 4.54. So, it’s not all that much better. In fact, it’s right where his career RA is, but his home ERA is 4.88. So, he has been better on the road. And there is always a hope once you get a guy out of Colorado and you’re not constantly going back to that elevation which messes with your pitches and then they talk a lot about the Colorado players that first trip after a home stand can take a minute to adjust. But either way, it’s not like you can look at that and and feel all too hopeful that he’s going to be outstanding outside of Colorado. He doesn’t strike out anyone and he averages 91.6 miles per hour on his four seamer. However, the curveball does get big whiff rates. Batters hit just 183 against his curveball last year. The cutter hasn’t been particularly good the past few years. We saw the Braves have some success with guys last year who threw cutters, so maybe they could be some help there. And he started throwing a sweeper last year to some success. And again, maybe the Braves could build on that. Again, the the the home road splits aren’t as drastic as you would hope to give you much thought in that he could be a great pitcher away from Kors Field, but still someone who could who could be a low to mid for erra’s guy for 156 million a year. You look at guys that are going to be on the free agent market that are going to take one year, $15 million deals that are probably going to give you similar type of results. Again, this isn’t my favorite move. We just haven’t talked about it. I at least wanted to mention it. Maybe if you were to get the Rockies to throw in some money with this as well, get it maybe down into more the $10 million range and you still don’t have to give up a lot of prospects for it or give up early any I’m not giving up anything significant prospectwise for Kyle Freeland. But if the Rockies were just looking to dump that money, uh, even if you if you could get them to buy down a little bit of it to give you a guy that maybe can give you 170 innings, 160, 170 innings, I’d give him 170 just so that vesting option doesn’t kick in and can be a, you know, a low to low to mid for erra’s guide for you. Wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world, but again, not my favorite deal so far. I’d prefer a Mackenzie Gore Gore, but like I said, I’m trying to stay away from NL East teams. I’d maybe even prefer Michael Walka if the Royals were going to deal him. Certainly a Chris Bubick if the Royals are looking to trade some pitching. I just don’t think we have what the Royals are wanting in a big bat to give in return. Michael Walker’s do 18 and 14 million in the next two years with a $14 million option after that. Luis Severino is another one, but he’s supposed to get 25 million this year and $22 million uh player option after that. Luis Castillo and Luis Severino kind of a similar thing. He was obviously playing in a tough ballpark last year at home. Had a really good end to the season. I wouldn’t hate Lu Luis Severino move. Luis Castillo as well, but making, you know, a little over 24 million the next two years with a $25 million option after that. Mitch Keller making almost 17 million this upcoming year. Pretty expensive. I put all these guys in the same boat. I’d probably prefer all of those guys over Kyle Freeland, but I think any of these you could go after and it’ be kind of similar. it’s rotation depth, but some of these other guys just are a little bit more expensive monetarily and prospect-wise, which is why I went with Kyle Freeland. And then finally, my reliever, somebody that I’ve talked about a ton is Jojo Romero from the Cardinals, 29-year-old left-handed reliever, rental in the last year of arbitration, career versus left-handed hitters, 185, 274, 255. Yes, that’s a slug of 255 and a near 30% strikeout rate. So completely dominant against lefties. Now against the righties, 263, 334, 428. So you’re talking about almost 200 more points in slug and a less than 20% strikeout rate against righties. So like I talked about Willu, you can only bat him against righties. Jojo Romero, you can really only put him out there against lefties, but when you do, he’s really, really good. So you’re facing maybe there’s two outs in an inning, you got a tough lefty coming up, Bryce Harper, Kyle Schwarber, whatever the case may be. you bring in a Jojo Romero and hopefully shut it down right there. The walk rate was really high last year at 11.4% but it was under seven the previous two years. So hopefully that was just kind of a blip. His slider had a 34.2% whiff rate last year and batters hit just 181 against that pitch. His change up, which he only threw to right-handed batters, had a 31% whiff rate and they hit just 167 against him, which kind of befuddles me as as how righties were so good against him. I’m assuming that righty’s just kind of sit on that sinker knowing that they can somewhat eliminate the slider. Although he does throw the slider to righties, but that change up was just so good against righty’s it doesn’t make sense as why he’s not better against them. So maybe there’s some hope that he could be. Um some other considerations, there are a ton of relievers that could be available which makes that that search kind of foolish at this point because there’s just so many relievers you could go after. But I will mention another name. Another one that I’ve talked about a lot is Garrick Clevenger of the Rays. Another devastating lefty, but he has two years of control left. If the Rays were willing to part with him, I would definitely be looking at Garrick Clevenger. And the bullpen piece doesn’t have to be a lefty. Both of those guys are that I mentioned, Romero and Clevenger. In fact, if Joe Mendes, it turns out, is not going to be ready or you feel, you know, way more uncomfortable about him this upcoming season, it would probably make more sense that whatever reliever you get this off season probably needs to be a righty. I mean, you do have Bummer, you do have Dylan Lee as some lefties in the bullpen already. You’re probably going to have Dylan Dod, although I don’t recommend using Dylan Dodd against lefties, but you still have, you know, Lee and Aaron Bummer that you can use against lefties. So, you don’t have to get a lefty reliever this offseason. Those are just some of the guys that I know are available or could be available that I like a lot. The lineup with this Akunia Olsen, Riley, Baldwin, Profar, and then a DH of Murphy, Abrau, Azie, Dubon, Michael Harris, uh, with a bench of Donovan Murphy or Abrau White and Bruhan. I like that. It’s not not bad at all. Uh, the the rotation SW strider, Freeland with Elder, Holmes, Lopez, Waldrip, that’s a pretty deep rotation that you can have of guys to help get you through the season. you know, seven, eight guys there that you feel pretty good about the bullpen. You got Iggy Lee, Jimenez, Romero, Bummer, Dodd, Pamps, and then Lopez, Holmes, Elder, whoever you don’t have in the rotation, you can put in the bullpen. So, it’s a it gives you some depth. It doesn’t give you anything to get all that excited about. In fact, when I compare this week, this week’s podcast to last week’s podcast, I think I prefer the free agent options. Of course, you can trade up your trade options. I was trying to make them as cheap monetarily and prospectwise as I could. But last year or last week in case you forgot, we talked about Ystrimsky, Ref Snider, Efflin, and Tyler Kinley. And I think I like those four over what we talked about today. Abrau, Donovan, Freeland, and Romero. And and look, you can obviously and it’s similar money between what we talked about last week and this week. So that’s not a big I think the trades are actually probably more expensive monetarily and they’re going to cost you prospects. So, I would much rather just go after the free agents because it doesn’t seem to much much be there doesn’t seem to be much discrepancy in the player that you’re getting between the cheap trade options and the treat uh cheap free agent option. But let me know what you think between last week’s podcast and this one. Would you rather go with the free agents? Would you rather go with the trades? Now, of course, it doesn’t have to be one or the other. They can mix and match these. In fact, what I would probably prefer is to sign Ystrimsky, trade for Donovan, sign Efflin, and trade for Romero. I’d probably mix and match these two and go with two trades, two signs like that. And I feel like that would be a really good offseason for the Atlanta Raiders. Not the best. Obviously, I want them to shoot much higher than this, but we’re looking at cheat cheaper type of deals that they can make this off seasonason to complete the depth of this team. Those are some names and some ways that they can get it done. So, let me know your thoughts down in the comments section below. Next, we got some more moves from the Atlanta Braves. They are getting some more depth for this team. We’ll get into that here next. The World Cup is coming back to North America for the for first time since 1994. The Braves claimed as Valdo Beto off the waiverss from the A’s. 30-y old right-handed pitcher in the minors last year, a 5.71 RA and a 1.90 whip. Aren’t you looking forward to that? Great move, huh? Uh 17 and a third innings, nine walks, 18 strikeouts. Spent more time at the big league level last year, 26 games, made 10 starts, 79 and two/3 innings, a 5.87 erra. So much better there. 1.61 whip. That is much better than what he had in the miners. Uh near four walk per nine and a 7.68 68 K per nine. The four steamer averages 94.5. Had a 34% whip rate on his slider. Potential swing man in the bullpin or spot starter if the Braves get desperate. He is out of options. So they’ll have to keep him on the roster or risk losing him. I think if you were to just try to convert him to a reliever with a fast ball that averages in the mid 90s and a slider that has some decent whiff rates might be something there. We’ll see if the Braves try to do that with him. They also claimed Anthony Molina off waiverss from the Rockies. You know the Braves love going up the Rockies guys. Another reason why I put Kyle Freeland on this list. Uh Braves seem to have something with these Rockies relievers. Molina much younger 23 years old right-handed pitcher in the miners last year a 6.59 RA and a 1.80 whip in 69 and two/3s innings with a near four walk per nine and a K per nine of 6.59. So nothing to get too excited about there. Had a 7.27 RA and a 1.67 67 whip at the big league level last year. 34 and two/3 innings with a 3.8% walk rate which is very good but just a 15% strikeout rate. His four seamer averages 95.6 so it throws a little bit harder. Slider had a 34.7% whiff rate in the curve a 48.8% whiff rate. So some good stuff there. Dabble with a cutter as well. Young throws hard some good secondaries that get some swing and miss. Just some more depth. He does have two minor league options left for Molina. So maybe the Braves can make something of him to make room on the roster on the 40man. The Braves DFAD Josh Walker. So you see the Braves bringing in these minor league depth pieces. Don’t look too much into them. These guys may be shuffled in and off the the 40man roster a lot this off seasonason as they try to build out the best depth as possible in the minor league level, which you can’t fault them for. Some Major League Baseball news. The Braves or sorry the Mariners traded prospects Harry Ford and Isaac Lion to the Nats for left-handed pitcher Jose Ferrar. Ferrer was one of the best left-handed pitchers in baseball last year. Ford has been considered as one of the best catching prospects in the game, but the Mariners obviously have a pretty good catcher. So that was a pretty interesting move there. The Cubs are apparently targeting Zack Gallon. There were some reports that maybe they had signed Zack Gallad and then there were some reports saying they definitely have not. Uh, so that was pretty funny and interesting over the weekend. Uh, Mackenzie Gore seems likely to get traded this week. A lot of smoke around his name right now. Twins said they’re not willing to tear it down this season and won’t trade Buckston. Ryan and Lopez could just be posturing to get some, you know, pressure people to give up more trades, but they also could very well go for it again with that team and then see what happens during the season.
