It’s FINALLY happening…
It’s finally happening as we have some major updates on the San Antonio Spurs heading into a very important week including the NBA Cup quarterfinals as we have updates on Castle Wemama and even Luke Cornet as their injury status well it’s gotten better than we could have even anticipated coming into this week and with one of the more important weeks of the season ahead of us with the Spurs sitting fifth in the Western Conference. These injury updates have come at an absolutely crucial time and they signify a major turning point for San Antonio this season. Yes, Dearon Fox has been holding it down, but we have all been waiting for everyone else to come back and it starts here with Luke Cornet as center Luke Cornet who missed the loss in Cleveland with an ankle sprain is expected to be cleared to play Monday per Jeff McDonald at Express News. And this is incredibly good news. Now, for any of us that watched that game versus the Cleveland Cavaliers, it was obvious that we need either Cornet or Wemi. My goodness, what was it? 80 point paints, point paints, paint points, whatever. It’s hard to say. Paint points for the Cleveland Cavaliers in that game. And yeah, safe to say we need Cornet back. And I just want to show you some, this comes from Data Baller, by the way, which is a great site to get some stats, some numbers with like Cornet or Wemi on the floor. Look, WBY without Cornet Net were plus 8.2 two offensive and defensive rating combined above league average. With both of them off, minus 6.6. With at least one of them on, you can see plus 6.9 when it’s just Cornet. Plus 8.2 when it’s just WBY. When they’re both on, hey, you know, the the numbers aren’t super great, but our defensive rating is incredible at 10.4 points per 100 possessions better than league average. But just Cornet himself, like if we look at the impact this guy has, look, it’s obvious when you watch that game versus Cleveland, why having a decent big man backup to WBY is absolutely necessary. It’s just because that paint presence needs to be there for San Antonio to succeed, especially when we give up lots of open threes, which has been a trend kind of all season. You need to have that paint presence. But Cornet, you can see the team’s offensive rating, four points above league average when he’s out there. defensive ratings two points above league average net plus 6.1 and the onoff numbers net 4.9 points per 100 possessions better with cornet on the floor and if you adjust that for three-point shooting luck from other teams now I this is one of those weird things where it doesn’t always paint the full clear picture because luck is kind of subjective it there’s some weird stuff in there and San Antonio has given up more open threes I think than any team so take it with a grain of salt but at the same time if you adjust for three-point shooting luckets onoff numbers are plus 7.5 better than league average. And look, he’s incredibly important. And with Wemby out, he has been one of the driving factors to why San Antonio is now fifth in the Western Conference. And yes, Dearon Fox plays a huge role. But think about the Spurs roster. Imagine if this was last year. Imagine if this was last year with whatever Bassie or Mckelishi, love the guys. Bismbo still on the team of course, but imagine if we didn’t have uh Luke Cornet for a lot of these games without Wimbley. Yes, he still missed some time, but having that presence is something that has been very important for San Antonio. And we know that block against Orlando, that game-saving, gamewinning block at the buzzer. He’s an incredibly valuable piece to this team, shooting 66% from the field this season, 1.6 blocks per game in 25 minutes. I think that’s two and a half per 36, something like that. really really good stuff from Luke Cornet. So, this is just one of the multiple injury updates that we got. And look, we got to get into the rest of them because this is incredible. But look, if you want to stay up to date, by the way, on all the latest Spurs stuff, hit the subscribe button down below. We’re pushing 12,000. I want to know who the 12,000 subscriber is. So, look, try and get closer to it. It’s completely free, by the way, and you get daily updates just like this as this from Michael C. Wright is the biggest thing for today. Hearing Stfan Castle is likely a go for tomorrow’s game in New Orleans. But as Jeff McDonald reported, Victor Webinyama, Jordan Mclofflin, and Castle all participated in practice today. Don’t expect Vic in New Orleans. But as Matt Guzman says first again reported by Express News, Webby, Castle, and Mclofflin all participated in practice today in New Orleans. No direct timetable, but this is naturally a step in the right direction. And this to me is absolutely huge because they’re in New Orleans. They’re traveling. It’s not like New Orleans is on the other side of the country from San Antonio. It’s not too far away. But just getting this news is getting me giddy, right? And especially knowing what this schedule looks like coming up. We got some NBA Cup stuff happening. Isn’t this exactly what we wanted to see? We wanted to see our boy where where is he? I have so many graphics here. There he is. Our boy Victor ready for this quarterfinal game in the NBA Cup. Look, we know going up against the Lakers in Los Angeles is going to be tough, but they’re on this road trip. So right now I am anticipating WBY to play. Look, even if it’s not in that first game against the Lakers, we got to win that at least the next game after, whether that’s, you know, an NBA Cup game or it does just end up being against Washington. Look, we’ll see. There’s some weird scheduling stuff. I still like I probably shouldn’t admit this. I still don’t really understand how the schedule works around the NBA Cup. Why some games count, some games don’t? Do they just Anyway, it’s weird because when you have get more games because you move further in the tournament, do they just take games off the end of the season? Probably should know that. Whatever. But Victor Webbyama, the fact that he’s there practicing, I don’t care that he’s not good to go on Monday versus New Orleans. I care that he’s with the team. We were anticipating again a return here in early mid December. And to add him into this team that, like I said, has been performing way better than we could have anticipated in a loaded Western Conference, 15-7 now on the season. The Rockets, Nuggets, Lakers, and Thunder all ahead of us, but the standings are so so close. We are just one game out of second place in the entire Western Conference. 15-7 to 16-6. All it takes is, you know, again, a win against these Lakers. And this could just this could just flip, especially if we get a win against the struggling New Orleans Pelicans. So having Vic out there is incredible. But Stfan Castle is just as big. That’s not really true. Vic is the biggest thing here, but Stefan Castle is very, very important. Like I I want to just point out the fact that Oh jeez, I have so many stats here. Where where’s the castle stuff? There’s the castle stuff. right here. Stefan Castle is incredibly important to this team. You look at his on-off numbers, right? Net 5.6, like plus over league average with him on versus off or plus one. So, the net is 4.6. But look at that defensive rating with Castle on the floor. The Spurs have a 109.6 defensive rating. Without him, a 120.1. Like having him in this lineup. I know Dylan Harper has been playing very well. De’Aran Fox has been carrying so much of this offensive load with Castle out. And look, these two guys have been doing an incredible job. Harper doesn’t even look like a rookie. He’s so mature. De’Arren Fox is showing us why he got clutch player of the year. He’s scoring 25 points a game on great efficiency. Isn’t that amazing to see? 49 from the field, 38 from three. But Steph Castle coming in 17 and 12 points, six boards, seven and a half assists. His turnovers were going down and down and down and down until this injury. Yeah, his three-point shooting could be better, but when he’s on the court, especially with De’Aran Fox, this team is just straight up better. You can see with Fox on, we’re plus 2.2 relative to league average. With just Castle, plus 6.1. With both of them off, we’re actually negative. But with both of them on, plus 4.1. And you can see the defensive rating is reasonable. But it’s the offensive rating that really takes a jump. That spur of offense, pun intended, to have both of these guys on the floor at once is going to be absolutely incredible. And I could have explored so many more lineups like with WBY with with other guys like Dylan Harper, but the fact that we will now have Stfan Castle back with the Aaron Fox and we give them a game to kind of get back into that groove. Right. By the way, I’m fully anticipating some Stfan Castle to Luke Cornet lobs because those two just have some kind of crazy chemistry that I don’t know where it comes from, but it does. So, I want to see some lobs there. But to get a game with Cornet getting sort of back into shape after missing a game, Fox and Castle demand the back court together with Harper coming off the bench. It also relieves a bit of pressure off Deon Vel, who by the way had one of the more insane first halfs I have ever seen against Cleveland, but of course fell off in the second half, but a little less pressure on him. So maybe more open shots, get those guys rolling just to have Vic hopefully come back now during this NBA Cup tournament. It’s all lining up for something big and I’m very excited. So leave your thoughts on this down below. And that’ll do it for this episode of Spurs Digest. But hey, if you enjoyed, don’t forget to hit that subscribe button down below. It's important to understand that the Spurs have four elite players in their ranks: Victor, Castle, Fox, and Harper, even though most of them are young. The others around them are good players, as is often the case in the NBA. The first four must average 20 to 25 points per game, depending on the night, to allow the team to compete with their opponents. Above that, it's a battle for victory, and in turn, one or more of the other teammates must do the work and provide the extra effort to take them to the playoffs this year. Currently, despite injuries, the Spurs are playing good basketball, especially when Castle is at the helm, as he plays a rather thoughtful, almost calm game, trying to draw fouls from the opponent. We are almost certain that he will maintain his average of 20 to 25 points. This sets him apart from Harper, who must also understand the obligation to maintain this average, and that it is not enough to be brilliant with the ball; points must be scored to ensure victory.
Mitchโs lineups have been ass even with the injuries. Play David Jones Garcia holy shit
Thanks ๐๐ฝ Josh for the good news. I still question Mitch and he not playing capable teammates. The other is the stagnant offense with no passing and only iso plays. Mitch doesnโt use the challenge or timeouts in a strategic manner. Hell even Becky knows that. Also, please post when you might call a game. Youโre good at calling them ๐
Go Spurs Go!!
You should miss pronounce someone on the opponents team when doing reports purposely.. people will comment to correct you start discussion and get you more in the algorithm
If we get through the next game with no injuries. We legit might have a full squad ready for the Lakers game
Wemby returns for 5 games insane
These video titles are so lame. Your channel is good without them
Hey Josh, that is tremendous news for us Spurs fans to hear that Stephon Castle back and able to pay in New Orleans, tomorrow night in addition, Wemby is with the team in N.O. but not cleared to play until maybe, in LA vs. the dreaded lakers on Wednesday night, the 10th.
Thanks Josh for this valuable news update! #GSG
Wemby is too injury prone.. he's gonna get injured every year until he retires.. he will have a short career
Kind of tired of Kornet ankle injury at least make up a different injury. I've yet to see this "ankle" injury. Last I saw he was blocking a shot jumping 30 ft in the air and jumping around celebrating. Don't make him like wemby resting him two weeks for a hangnail, stubbed toe, hurt feelings… ๐๐
Bismack Biyombo is TERRIBLE. He's a great person, but a horrible player๐ฎ
Sample size with Fox Wemby and Castle all is extremely small, guarantee Fox and Castle will be one of the better backcourts defensively in the entire league. Everyone talking about Fox on offense but no one mentions when he has SFs in clamps as a skinny 6โ3 guard
Something that i donโt understand in our schedule between 12/10 and 12/17. If we lose against the Lakers for the NBA Cup. We not gonna have any games until the one vs D.C 12/17 ?
Tsr beter
its time to get 8 straight wins
atlast I've waited for a while for those two guys to return
The remedy for our 3 point defensive follies is getting Herb Jones from N.O.
Great info as usual Josh!๐๐
