Latest on Pete Alonso, when his future with Mets may be decided | Mets Hot Stove
And so Andy, go ahead. I know you have news that Petonzo, you’re expecting the signing to happen today. Is it? I’m expecting the signing to happen in March. No, I think it’s somewhere between those two extremes that we just stated. Nobody seems in a hurry here. It It does feel a lot like last year’s in terms of pacing. Uh but we will see. I I what’s going to move this market is if somebody any team that’s just somebody else goes to that fifth year. And I think Allonzo probably goes to the team that steps up. And if nobody steps up in terms of years, then we get a situation like last winter where uh perhaps the Mets and Allonzo can work out a reunion on a shorter term. So this really does remind me, Steve, of the Diaz conversation that we just had in the sense it’s like a player feels justified in maybe wanting five years, a team values a player more around three, and we’ll see if a middle ground could be found. But in both cases, the Mets want the players, the these guys who are their players who thrive in their uniform and in their city. Uh but not to the extent of necessarily having them on the roster in 2030. So that’s the staring contest. Yeah. Look, and I have no added uh insight from, you know, Andy brings to all the insights. Steve, you and I both know that. So mine is more on emotional side. I think this is um something that the Mets want to get done. I think the Mets don’t necessarily need to make it happen, but I think there is a strong urgency to try to make sure that Pete Alonzo is back in a Mets uniform. Aside from the fact that he’s a homegrown guy, he’s thrived in New York. If he stays in a New York Mets uniform, he’s going to own all the records uh that there are offensively. Um but I also think there’s been a lot of talk about his defense and that that may be the thing that precludes. But look, run prevention is not really figuring in the two corner guys. It’s defense up in the middle and it’s arms. Arms are what they really need for run prevention. So if the defense becomes a factor, I think it’s just talking points. I think Pete Alonzo needs to be here for his offense. Yeah. And he is open to has said it through Scott Boris open to dhing. And so that at least a little bit would probably change the calculus in terms of how badly the Mets want to bring him back if he’s willing to go off of first base at least part of the time. The one thing that that I will say though when it comes to not just Pete Alonzo but Edwin Diaz and the way last off season went um we’re seeing a pattern here over the last couple of years with David Sterns. Someone who clearly wants the players back but is not going to negotiate against himself and is not worried about letting the process play out. And I think that’s one of the the nice aspects of having Steve Cohen ownership where you can let the process play out, say, “Hey, go get the best offer and then if we want to match that, go above it, we can.” But so similarly to you, Andy, I don’t necessarily see this resolving anytime soon. I I lean much more heavily towards it going the way it went last year where a resolution came after the new year uh maybe deep into January or early February. If Alonzo doesn’t sign with the Mets though, where do they go to fill that huge power gap? Well, the timing could get tricky here because if if Alonzo’s out there in the timetable that we’re suggesting, then what where what’s going on with your Bellingers, your Kyle Schwarbers, and those are two players who I would not by any stretch rule out for the Mets. I think again timing wise is a little tricky and Bellinger is represented by the same agent as Alonzo. So, and he plays first. So, these things to untangle them, it it it’s it’ll be interesting to see how it all plays out. Uh, but in terms of replacing Alonzo’s production, if not being one of the few guys that can better it, I would not, as I said before, I would not rule out Schwarber. I know the Phillies are really in on him. Uh, but this is Schwarber’s last chance at a long-term contract, too. So, if the Mets decide that that’s a lane where they want to get aggressive, and I’m not saying that they will, uh, but that that’s a a place they could get interesting. I think this is just an interesting conversation for this time of the year honestly because Kyle Schwarber is a guy that anybody would say I’d love to have that guy in my uniform with a bat in his hand uh you know 500 times in a season and as a DH certainly the Mets have not had a bonafide DH and a left-handed power guy that they can rely on in that role. So yeah, is he a great fit? Yeah. Will he come to the Mets? I think that’s less than likely a stretch, right? I think it’s a bit of a stretch and I think most likely he tries to stay in Philly if he can and I think the timing is the interesting thing because are the Mets going to go all in to steal him away from the Phillies when maybe Alonzo’s still out there? I doubt that. I will say this too just cuz it is the fun conversation to have right now and I agree with you. I think a lot of people expect that Schwarber will end up back with the Phillies. If the Mets swooped in and grabbed Kyle Schwarber, you could absolutely see Philly going and making a play then for Pete Alonzo, right? Couldn’t you see that happening? That’d be a fun little swaparoo for next season for entertainment purposes. And you know, I would say Steve too real quick that Pete’s been here a long time. Edwin’s been here a long time. So there probably is some temptation even though they love these guys like what’s a already traded NMO. What’s a different culture look like? What’s a different makeup of the clubhouse? So that’s where that gets interesting to me, too. Yeah, sure does.

Pete deserves to paid well for all he has contributed to the Mets. He plays harder than Soto and has more team spirit. Keep Pete and Diaz.
Geez get over Bellinger… He is so inconsistant offensively… he cant even replace Nimmos offense let alone alonsos. Away from Yankee stadium last year he had a 301 on base and a 715 ops with only 11 hr, 35 runs scored and 43 rbis… that production is much less than nimmo and the ops and on base is less than mcneil who is already your super utility and only costs 18mm. Bellinger wants 6 LONG years and up to 200mm. His 5 year ave war is only 2.3. his 24 in chicago his war was 2.2 which INCLUDES his defensive value already and with only 18 hr and 78 rbis.. again less than nimmo. Mcneils 5 year ave war is better at 2.7. would you give mcneil 30-34mm a year and 6 yrs if he was 30? that would be a ridiculous overpay as would signing belli. so while semmingly everyone keeps saying he is a perfect fit because he can play all 3 OF positions and 1b.. he doesnt hit enough and he will get overpaid because of his production ONLY at yankee stadium as a dead pull lefty power hitter. hard pass!!!!
The fans love Pete. Just bring him back
Man I really dont like Andy Martino. Please fire him
Andy Martino … 🫠
Nah. Stearns will replace Alonso with another .230 hitter. Half of the top four are gone. Dollar Store Stearns will pick up another bargain basement player to replace Alonso. They seem hellbent on Luis Robert Jr. There’s a viable .230 hitter. Maybe they’ll trade away Nolan McClean and Jonah Tong for him. 🤦♂️
The last time that the Mets tried to sign Alonzo, long term, he didn’t sign and bet on himself with disastrous results. He signed a short term contract and here we are for about the third time. Alonzo’s agent, Steve Boros, has not served Alonzo well. If a team offers Boros an arm and a leg that’s never suitable for him. He wants both arms, both legs, the head and the torso and the first born child! Then on top of that he wants them to receive a long term guaranteed contract so that the player is ready to collect social security because of their age! I know he wants the best for his clients, however, the sheer level of greed and audacity for the outlandish contracts is killing the sport. They are pricing out the average fan. Now you can’t watch a game unless you pay for a premium sports network. With the cost of living the way it is people will turn to less expensive things to do. Personally, I no longer watch sports on tv. I was paying several hundreds of dollars for a million useless channels that were never watched, however, every couple of years the sports networks would go off the cable system because they were having a dispute over more money. It’s outrageous already. So when guys like Boros request these insane contracts for their clients we, the consumer, get screwed. The average cost for parking and something to eat and drink at the stadium is like going to a high prices restaurant except double or triple the price! Back to the old radio! So Mets, offer Pete 3 years and a fourth year team option and call it a day! If that’s not good get Swauber!
David Stearns worried about 5 years from now when he himself won’t be on the team 😂😂😂
What a 3 4 5 soto Alonzo swaber.sign those checks steve
This is what the Mets do. Get rid of generational power hitter with injury prone .200/18 hr hitter. Just get it over with already so we know which team Pete can start smashing HRs with.
Sign Pete. Split the difference with a 4 year contract and be done with it.
Like always I learned nothing
Yes Pete should be paid 4 years 160 million 🎉
Scott boras time again. 😂
Time to move on from Alonso.. that kind of money for a 30+ year old baseball player… Remember Albert Pujols Angels?
Emotions don't win championships. If Pete gets 5, you'll get real production out of 2 years. That's his track record. Gotta let him and Diaz walk! I'm tired of watching Diaz walk the bases loaded before throwing strikes!!
We're reluctant giving starters long term contracts bur we weren't with Soto I don't get it SMDH
The only person/people who really care about records are LeFraud Jane and his boy band fans.
No one is giving him five years.
Of course we need Pete but we need pitching more than anything. I'd prefer not to roll with Senga, Holmes, Manaea and Peterson again and the bullpen is total crap
Mets need to get someone like a Will Clark
Sign Pete n Edwin
No offense to Soto who is a phenomenal player but he wasn't a good fit for the Mets. He was too expensive, even for Cohen, and they needed to get three excellent starting pitchers instead of him with that money and then keep the Polar Bear and this would have been a world series team for sure….. I wonder if they can offload Soto… maybe to the Dodgers…. Whoever made that decision wasn't thinking win right now or even win….
Ugh! More endless useless speculation by sportscasters until Alonso and Diaz sign. Meanwhile Soto put up good numbers but they are deceiving. A lot of his home runs were inconsequential and he'd rather walk with runners on than swing at a ball. Furthermore he does not seem to be a good teammate. His signing may have done more harm than good. Incidently you are a dope if you think Stearns is the one deciding star players future contracts. Cohen makes the big decisions.
It Doesn't matter who the Mets bring in
There a Joke of a Organization
Let him go. Alonso is not worth the contract Boras will demand. Diaz must be signed.
Offer him 5 who gives af, they offered him a 7 2 years ago and he hasn’t regressed
No brainer. Go the fifth year. Are you a big market club with money or not? You find away to soften the blow of the back end of the contract.
just sign Pete. 5 yrs / 160mil. Done deal. Let him play 1B most of this year and then taper him off into the DH role the following 4 years. Pete is younger than Schwarber and more versatile than him since he can play 1B if you need him to. Plus he is our guy.
Someone sign Pete so we Mets can be done with him already!!
7 years and we haven't won sh!t with Pete😵💫🤬😵💫😵💫😵💫😵💫
Give him 5yr/$150M and call it a day.
They signed Soto for 15 years at age 26 so hjs contract goes until he is 41. Why are they so hesitant about signing Pete until he is 36?
I kind of love that just an hour after Andy says he has no market, he's being called to the Winter meetings to meet with several teams who've reportedly made offers.
Please keep Pete and Edwin. 🙏🏻 DFA and or trade: Megill, Marte, Senga, Senger, Winker, just to name few because i could go on and on, Free up money and positions that way. The Mets already have an elite center fielder in Tyrone Taylor. They just gotta teach him to hit with some consistency.
Sign him bro or get Kyle and batty plays first. Hope one of the young bucks can have something click
