RINK WIDE POST-GAME: Vancouver Canucks vs Detroit Red Wings | Game #30 – Dec. 8, 2025

After a win against the Wild, the Canucks come crashing back to earth, falling 4 nothing to the Detroit Red Wings. We’re breaking it down now on Rinkwide Vancouver. [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] And we welcome you inside the Pacific Toyota dealers studios. Visit shop toyota.ca or your local Pacific Toyota dealer. Today it was the Detroit Red Wings for the Vancouver Conucks nothing. Uh I’m Jeff Patterson. He is an Gfar rink brought to you in part by bet 365 seasons. Greetings everybody. Uh, Conucks lurched to the 30game mark with their second shutout loss of the season. Both of them coming at home. They got blanked by JT Miller and the New York Rangers in late October. And here in the second week of December, they fall flat against a Detroit team that came in after a win the other night in Seattle. And the Conucks were coming off that win against the Minnesota Wild. Again, we can talk about the process. Maybe the Cucks deserve better, but this isn’t the place. If you’re looking for silver linings, you’ve come to the wrong spot, folks. Uh, you get what you deserve most of the time in professional sports and the losses just keep mounting for the Canucks. Yeah, and look, I think everyone might have had a fun night on Saturday, you know, holiday season, head to the rink and you go and you cheer the Vancouver Conucks on for their one win in five games or whatever they do have um on on a on a streak. But this uh albeit without Elias Patterson, this is this Vancouver Canucks team. No push back, no urgency, no really anything. The Detroit Reading scored two goals in 30 seconds in the second period. And that was pretty much all she wrote in the hockey game. Kevin Lankin and getting the pull. Yeah. After the second period and then Nikquila Toilo getting the pull with five minutes left in the game, down three nothing. So I thought Adam had Adam Foot might put Lankin in back after that. Kevin get in there and mop things up. uh first time in his National Hockey League head coaching career that the hook came out. Uh that Demco took himself out of that game against Winnipeg when he was injured and uh now all of a sudden goalending added to the list of issues for the Vancouver Conucks. It’s been a tough go for Kevin Lankin and we can sit here and talk about should have made more stops, should have given his team a chance or if they got shut out. They could have had Lankan and Tolo and Demco uh on crutches in net tonight. When you don’t score, uh you’re not going to win hockey games. And so, yeah, they found a way to get four the other night against the Minnesota Wild. Uh but prior to that, they had three goals in three games when you go back to Los Angeles, Colorado, and the loss against Utah on Friday night. And so, this is more of the same. And uh Jake De Brusk is going to be shaking his head. He had a team high five shots on goal. hit a crossbar. I had a couple of point blank opportunities, but kind of getting tired of talking about uh the chances for Jake De Brusk and and some others. The list is a long one now. And this comes with the territory when you are a struggling team. But Kefir Sherwood, who leads the Canucks, it’s double digits now. It’s 10 without a goal. Yep. for the Conucks leading goal scorer who’s been stuck on 12 for way too long and maybe some of the trade talk has got to him uh not nearly as noticeable around the puck as he was earlier in the season. So She Sherwood’s gone 10 without scoring. De Brusk now up to nine without a goal. Brock Betser has one in a dozen. Connor Garland with one goal in his last eight. And the captain has gone absolutely silent as well. More on that. Of course, big part of it power play that’s now 0 for 20 in the last seven hockey games. So that’s not getting it done either. And then yeah, you fall behind for the 18th time in 30 tries this season and you’re playing catchup. And on this night, uh, James Van Remsteike goal at 1414 of the first period. So late in the first period, Van Remsteike gets his own rebound and tucks it in, uh, behind Kevin Lankin, who was still in net at that point. we showing you on the live stream there and just outrageous egregious defensive breakdowns and poor decision making and puck watching and overman and chasing and all that kind of you name it. The Cox were guilty of it in the hockey game and kind of all rolled up into one package there on that opening goal. Tyler Myers has Michael Rasmusen along the sideboards. Marcus Person goes into the corner with JT Confer loses the puck battle and loses his man. Like one thing to lose the puck battle, but stay on top. You always hear coaches stay on top of your guy. No, Peterson goes to the far side. Comfort kinds of shakes him. Atu Ratu then leaves the front of the net to come in support. Uh problem there is with one hand on his stick, Coner is able to put the puck between the legs of Ratu and JVR left wide open in front of the net. Two cracks at it and makes good on the second one. So, you know, the Person Meyers, it’s just not working. It hasn’t worked all season long. It’s been a struggle for both of those guys. and Atuatu, who’s been holding a hot hand here. Um, you know, I don’t want to single him out, but he comes in and he just adds another layer to the issues for the hockey club. Uh, that kind of summed up so much of this team season where they just they make the wrong read, the wrong play at the wrong time, and guys are left wide open in front of the net. This is the NHL. I don’t care if you’re 37 years old like JVR, uh, you give him enough time and enough chances, he’s going to score. And that’s what he did, his seventh goal of the season. And that’s all the Red Wings would need. But as you said, two goals, 37 seconds apart in the later stages of the second period takes it from one nothing to three nothing in a hurry. And at that point, it was OVH. And this season might be that right now. Look, there’s a lot of people in our in our social channels and spaces right now that are happy. Obviously team tank, you know, Gavin McKenna, there’s a lot of players in that, you know, top three, four, five range that, you know, Kuck fans would be very excited about. Unfortunate part, that’s a long time away from now. There are 52 games remaining. Half of those at home, right? You got a lot lot of home games left. Um, you go on this big New York Eastern road trip coming up here after the Buffalo Sabres come to town just before the holidays. Last home game on Thursday night. We’ll be here for that. Um but yeah, it just it’s not a good vibe around the team right now. Um it’s not good when you talk to people, you know, you’re hearing things come up, trade rumors and this that and the other, you know, couple weeks ago the president saying that we’re for sale kind of only the veterans and now you hear the story of stuff with Quinn Hughes and then you go up and you have efforts like that. Like if there was a rallying point, if there was something going on, it it would seem like it would come at now. you know, even on the broadcast, you know, um Shorty and and and Ray were commenting about really not that much stuff after the whistle either. There’s no push back from this team. There’s no real fight. There’s no sense of urgency to go and and battle for each other and and and try and win a hockey game. So, we’re left sitting here trying to talk about what they have done the pre or that night and we’re left with exactly what we’re left with and that was a four nothing asskicking. It has looked on a few nights this season. Not a lot cuz I mean two weeks ago we were saying well you can rarely question the effort. Um that’s starting to change a little bit here and I know that they outshot the Red Wings 36 to 20. They sort of piled it on in the third period but uh score effects taking hold there and way too little and ultimately far too late. Um so yeah I mean some of the individuals kind of feel like they have checked out. We make this pledge to you though our loyal Rinkwide viewers and listeners. No checking out here. Keep checking us out. Uh we’ll be here after each and every one of these games. We will. It’s just the way it goes. This is a postgame live stream and we will find things to discuss with this hockey club. It may not always be breaking down what we see on the ice because it does feel like that is secondary right now to the firestorm of rumors that are going on around uh this hockey club, but it is the season of giving. And keep that in mind because we’re asking you to support a very worthwhile cause here on Rinkwide and that is the BC Mental Health Foundation. and our charity partner again this season. And if you bring it with a super chat, if you’ve got it in your heart, bring it with a super chat. Uh supporting the BC Mental Health Foundation, changing the face of mental health and addiction by supporting breakthroughs in care, public understanding, research, and knowledge exchange. Your thoughts with the super chat will go right to the top of the queue and we’ll get them on here. Uh Bribec 12 says, “Beautiful score line for team tank uh for the win.” Well, yes, the hockey game, but Team Tank takes another uh quantum leap forward here. And uh they do remain ahead of the Nashville Predators in the standings because the Predators did not play. Calgary starting to pull away from the Vancouver Conucks. Flames ran it up on Buffalo 7 to4 and uh so yes, Canucks are losing sight of the Calgary Flames now uh in the Western Conference in the overall standings. Uh, Spatzilly coming with a super chat as well. Listening to Rinkquite is a consistent joy, a brief oasis from a challenging world. Thank you guys. Uh, and thank you Spatilly, a regular contributor here on Ringwide. All right, so it’s one nothing after one. I mentioned it earlier. The Cubs have fallen behind far more than they have opened the scoring. So that’s not unfamiliar territory to them. And after 20 minutes, I think, you know, Adam Foot could look his guys in the eye after one period and say, “Hey, all right, you know, not what you want on the scoreboard, but the process reasonably good.” One point the shots were nine to two in the Canucks favor. Brock Besser had a deflection on the opening shift of a Quinn Hughes shot and then uh was set up by Connor Garland right in the slot, right in his wheelhouse. And that was sort of the first indication that John Gibson was into this thing and on his game. Then we talked about De Brass got in behind the fence in tight, tried to get it up over the glove side and and Gibson got just enough of it to keep it out. So there were chances from guys that have done some scoring for this Vancouver hockey club. Uh and then we’re showing more to Russ chances in the second period on that power play. First of all, he hits the crossbar off the rush. uh sequence continues and you saw it there momentarily but you know right at the right post and had time had a good look and Gibson extending his left leg I mean that’s a big time save uh for a veteran goalender like John Gibson who came through in the crunch and you’ll hear his name when we get to the three stars certainly but uh yeah Jake de Bruss as we said it’s nine games without a goal he can’t buy one right now and we know that he’s streaky but if it’s time to you know get this streak moving in the right direction again. Kagan by a goal. I mean, look, he hits the crossbar, goes and gets robbed in front of the net. And, you know, I think that the the power play obviously not being non-existent for the last little while with this hockey team. But for Jake De Brusk, you got to you got to shoot. You got to figure out a way to score five on five. You can’t just rely on a power play. And if your power play is inept like it has been the last little while, you’re not going to score. Um, they need more from Jake De Bruss. They need more from Brock Besser. They need more help from I know he didn’t play from Elias Pers. They need more from everybody. And I think the more that they need isn’t just the goal scoring. It’s going back to the roots of it. If you want to win hockey games, you got to have better practices. You got to go out show up to the rink and have that positive mentality. You got to be pros pro. We saw Troy Stcher do an interview on Hockey Night Canada over the weekend playing for the Leafs. You know, Kevin Be called him a pros pro. I’m not entirely sure how many pros pros there are in that Canucks locker room right now. I just think that things are going really sideways really fast and it just looks like a group that isn’t together right now and and you can tell by the way that they’re out there and they’re playing. It’s just they it just look very lost. Like three goals guys weren’t even marked. Three open players like that just doesn’t happen. I know the Jets had a players only meeting and I don’t really know what players only meetings do and I don’t really know who’s who would call a players only meeting if it was here in Vancouver with the Canucks but man something’s got to give here. You brought up Kevin Bexa. It’s interesting. He was hanging around this morning. Now, he’s got a son that plays in the BC Hockey League and so uh not a stranger to these parts, but I haven’t seen Kevin Beex on a game day uh certainly this season like at locker room level and talking to the coaches and all that kind of stuff. And I was thinking the last time uh that he was around there that I could remember was the night that uh you know he officially retired as a member of the banker of Kucks and you gave that speech in the locker room about what it meant to be a Kuck and I thought have they asked him back like are we going down that road again? Certainly uh he probably could uh give this group a talking to right now. Uh whatever the case just thought it was interesting that Kevin Bxo was among the onlookers at uh Morning Skate this morning. Uh a bunch of super chats coming in and we really do appreciate uh these. Free PD says uh has Leny given them any key saves this season. Uh it’s been a struggle. We’ve talked about that for Kevin Lankin and we wondered how he would adapt with a healthy Thatcher Demco at the time. Uh and Demco was the guy. Uh but they wanted to make sure that they didn’t overwork Thatcher Demco. And so they tried early in the season to make sure that Kevin Lankin was getting his starts and was getting opportunities, but boy, it has been a tough tough go uh for Kevin Lankin in his uh 10th loss of the season. And he takes the loss here because he comes out when the score was three nothing. So, to Pilo doesn’t give up a goal, the only goal in the third period, an empty netter, but Kevin Lankin, uh, and the updated stats, we’ll see if we get those a little bit later. But, uh, you know, save percentage hovering in the 880s, that’s not getting it done. And just in terms of, you know, games where he has performed, I would say his last win in Tampa, remember the first period, the shots were 13 to1. Uh, that game probably isn’t in reach if he doesn’t step up and and get the job done there. um you know other wins at home against Columbus on the road in St. Louis and early in the season the game in Chicago that the Canucks won his second start. Uh he was good in that one and he’s been terrific in the two shootouts that he’s been to but again not enough saves. Uh Kucks have been out goalendered on a lot of nights this season. And uh at the outset of the year, one of their paths to uh prominence and possible playoffs was, you know, whoever started in goal, they wanted to believe that they were going to have an edge over the guy at the other end of the ice. And that just hasn’t played out. And obviously this idea that goalending plus a veteran defense core was really going to be the strength of the hockey club and that just hasn’t happened either. And so here they are. Throw the injuries into the mix and it’s a mess. It is a mess. Uh we know that the overall record drops to 116 and three. So 11 wins in 30 hockey games, 25 points out of those 30 games. And the home record uh don’t have to tell you, but uh for those of you that continue to shell out uh reports from the rink again, and I saw it firsthand on Saturday, there are large pockets of empty seats now. They may be sold. I I just get the sense and I know anecdotally that uh buddies of mine are having trouble giving away connect tickets that uh you know putting out calls in our group texts, hey anybody want tickets for tonight and there’s not a ton of response. That’s where they are right now in their competitive cycle and uh we’ll see where it goes. But as you said like they’ve got two eight home game home stands like in the second half of the season they finished with 22 of 35 at Rogers Arena. Those tickets may be sold, but where’s the incentive for people to get off their butts and get down to the rink and watch and what’s it going to look like and sound like? Uh, all those questions are fair game when you are where the Vancouver Conucks are and it’s not getting I mean Saturday night little oasis in the desert and here they are back to they’re losing ways. Like what happens if Buffalo comes in here and runs their show on Thursday night? That’s that’s being built as the holiday game. It’s supposed to be fun and cheery. It’s their last game at home before Christmas. Well, here’s the thing. Would it surprise you if Sabres came in? Yeah. No. And that cuz that’s where that’s where we’re at with this hockey team right now. And I think the fan base is the same way. Like there are no easy out no easy outs here in the National Hockey League for the Vancouver Conucks. And they’re right in the middle of it right now and and they’re going through it. And you know, things are happening at the rank. Quinton, excuse me. Asked about trade rumors and and and things like that left, right, and center. We’ll get to that a little bit later when we talk about the captain. Farhan sent us a text from the rink there from the Quinn Hughes media availability. So hopefully we can get that the Canucks post it. But yeah, no, it’s there’s there’s a lot of stuff going on on there’s a lot of noise and I wonder when if any of these words are going to turn into actual action here soon. Uh, a couple other super chats that I want to get to. Keep them coming. Again, supporting the BC Mental Health Foundation. Canucks fan 9420. As much as I hate to say it, I’m now all for Trading Hughes. If it means we can get the right pieces back to retool this team. If you’re trading Quinn, we’re using the other R word. I don’t care. It’s not a retool. If the captain goes, uh, it is a full-on rebuild for the Vancouver Conucks. And Justice 16, who checks in from time to time, says, “I traveled from Ontario for this game, but it’s okay because she said yes, guys.” And we talked about his engagement a little while back. Uh, we got goalied and I didn’t even get to hear the goal song in person. No, you’re right. Shut out. As we said, second time this season that the Vancouver Conucks have been blanked. All right, let’s get to the three stars of this hockey game. As you can imagine, all coming from the visiting side in the building, John Gibson, Axel Sandine Pelica, and James Van Remdike. Uh, same three here on Rink wide, but uh, slightly different order. Gibson makes 36 saves. Did they alter? Oh, it’s up to 39 now. They say the connects outshot the wings 17-7 in the third. So, officially a 39 save shut out for John Gibson. His first shut out of the season, 25th of his lengthy National Hockey League career. And he was good. He was up to the task and uh uh there for the Red Wings. Back-to-back wins for him after posting a victory in Seattle on Saturday night. So, John Gibson, no doubt about it. Uh he was the first star. Second star is Van Remsteike, not just the game-winning goal, uh, but five shots on goal and a guy who is feeling it right now. He scored in six of the last seven games. So, uh, you know, there’s a big three offensively for the Red Wings and they really weren’t heard from other than Larkin scoring into the empty net, but pretty quiet night for Alex Debrink. U, Lucas Raymond as well. And then there’s a bit of a gap as far as their secondary scorers. Patrick Kane though is three goals for 500. He’ll get there soon. Uh he was relatively quiet tonight. Uh but James Van Reistake with the the goal and five shots on goal. So uh you know he’s feeling it right now. And he is the second star. And then we go Sandine Pelica not only two assists but on the ice for the first three Detroit goals. So uh you know a nice night at the office. Both of his assists or primary helpers sets up cop on the doorstep and then 37 seconds after that point shot and it was Nate Danielson deflecting that. So yeah, clean sweep for the Red Wings. No surprise in a four- nothing victory. Gibson, Van Remsteike, and Sand Dean Pelica are the three stars. They’re brought to you by Gretar. And we can tell you and have been telling you our next Conucks Army watch party is coming up on December 20th. So, Saturday when Vancouver’s in Boston, early start, just days before Christmas. So, it’s kind of a watch party, Christmas party. Come on by, have some fun. And I know fun’s in short supply these days, but we will have some fun uh as we watch some hockey. Can’t promise it’ll be great hockey, but uh yeah, we’re throwing another watch party. So, get together just ahead of Christmas. Prizes. Greta’s got its terrific game day food and drink specials. Join us on December 20th. Vancouver at Boston. Text 604256422 to secure your spot. And if you need the number again, go to the Greta website on the homepage in the top right corner. There’s a big button that says text us. And you can click on the Vancouver location. Message them there. Reserve your spot. Gretavar, the place to be. 50 West Cordova Greta Bar. Let the games begin. All right. I know that the Canucks were hoping that the return of Nils Hoglander could provide some sort of spark. Oh yeah. Uh started on the fourth line and then with nothing going really for the hockey club, we saw him get promoted uh for the third period at the very least played uh with Atu Ratu and Jake De Brusk. Final line on Nils Hoglander 13 minutes and 22 seconds. just a single shot on goal, one hit and he was out there for one of the goals again. So, uh, not an impact. There wasn’t an impact player in the Canucks lineup, so he had lots of company in that regard. Did you notice Nils Hoglander in any capacity in his return to the lineup? Uh, noticed him in the pregame interview with Olivia the Conucks posted, noticed him when they showed him on the broadcast, and noticed him when he had that shot early in the game. And other than that, it’s going to take time. like it’s gonna take quite some time for him to get his legs back, for him to get back into being that guy that, you know, is gonna, you know, run around and and be that energetic energetic player that they want. Um, it’s definitely going to take quite some time, but in a one-off and a guy that, you know, you hope that might come in with a little bit more energy and things like that, you didn’t really see it, but we’ll see what happens. I mean, look, they’re they’re going to they’re going to need him here at some point. Yeah. Um, you know, it’s a tough spot. I mean, we started in the fourth line and I didn’t have a problem starting a guy there to just define the speed of the game, but the fourth line today has Drew O’ Conor when they’re playing center. Uh, thought maybe Hoglander would work his way into the center rotation before this game was through. What about We should mention that Adam foot after the game said Elias Patterson felt better today, which is a good sign. I’ll know more in the next couple of days. As far as a timeline, I don’t want to touch it. So, so that means he’s probably not playing Thursday. Yeah. Don’t from that. And if he doesn’t and if he doesn’t touch the timeline, is he going on the road trip? Yeah. I mean, we’ve heard too many times this season that guys have felt better or have skated. Well, maybe that’s also why he doesn’t want to touch it, cuz he maybe doesn’t know. You know what I mean? Absolutely. No, I understand that. But that’s why I don’t think you can defer a whole lot uh from that. Um, other than I’m I’m with you that it certainly doesn’t sound promising for Thursday night. The Conucks do have two practices scheduled for uh Tuesday and Wednesday and then the Buffalo Sabres are in here on Thursday night. Do you have an issue with Lucas Riel not getting in? He’s not going to make that much of a difference from what we see. I found it strange on Saturday that when Pety pulled out of the warm-up and wasn’t available. Now maybe Lucas Reichel, who knows if he was even in the building at that point. Um, you know, he’s not expecting to play. Uh, he’s the forgotten man right now, but he had played center and all of a sudden you’re down a center and you’re sliding a winger into the middle. I would have thought that maybe that was the opportunity for uh Lucas Reichel to get back in the lineup, but uh now Hoglander’s back there, so uh he was a healthy scratch again. I don’t know. I I have no idea where it goes from here. Um, you know, I kind of thought that to activate Hoglander that maybe they would put Riel on waiverss, they elected to send Jonathan Leer Mackey back to Abbottzford. That was curious as well that they sent Lucker Mackey back on Sunday morning. Abbottzford played Sunday afternoon and Lucker Mackey didn’t play in that game. So, uh, not quite sure, you know, they didn’t have to free up the roster spot until today. I thought if they were setting Leer Mackey down, it was with a design to play on Sunday afternoon and help that Abbottzford team that can use all the reinforcements it can get. So, uh, who knows? There’s just so many little fires and it all adds up to a monster blaze uh in and around the Vancouver Conucks. David Camp, another guy that shouldn’t be playing where he is in the lineup. That’s 10 games now for him. And uh, he doesn’t have a point. He doesn’t have a point. And I said to you at one point during this game, like I can’t recall in recent memory, a guy that I’m less enthused to see have the puck on his stick than David Camp. And I I I say this with respect because he shouldn’t be shouldn’t be being asked to play where he is in the lineup. This is a defensive center who has never profiled uh as anything but. And they’ve put him between Brock Besser and Connor Garland. I mean, it’s no surprise that those two guys have gone in the tank right now, but they’re just there’s nothing every time he’s got the puck on his stick, like literally nothing happens. And it just kind of feels like they’re going to continue to trot him out there. And I I just I don’t get that. Like it isn’t working. Just like Lucas Reichel wasn’t working. So, you know, try something else. Experiment a little. Um if EP40 is out for any length of time, like this is this is what you got to work with. Um, I don’t know. I mean, there’s going to be a lot of long nights if that is in fact the case. Uh, so, you know, they will push on and again, uh, they’ll play on Thursday against the Buffalo Sabres. Uh, 10 game segments because it is the 30-ame mark for the Vancouver Conucks. They managed to go five and five in the first 10 games. Yep. You know, through the injuries, through all the travel, compressed schedule, we said at the time, five and five, like, all right, at least Peterson wasn’t playing great then. Um but they managed to win five of the first 10 games. Got some goalending. Got some power play goals. The second 10game segment 4-4 and two. So four wins and six losses, but they managed to get a couple of the games past regulation pickup points. 10 more points. They were at 20 points through 20 games. Yeah. And for all the outside stories around this team, 20 points in 20 games wasn’t terrible. We kept saying at the time like it’s not good enough. 500 hockey is not going to be good enough. They are going to have to start moving this thing in the right direction. Well, in the last 10 games, the bottom has fallen out on the Vancouver Conucks. This 10game segment that concluded tonight, the Canucks went 27 and one, five points in those 10 games. And so that is why they have 25 points in those 30 games. And again, to get to 95 points on the season, I need 70 points from the remaining 52 games. Go 30 and something. Yeah, like that math just doesn’t add up. Um, Farhan Loi from our show tweeting that Foot says Demco probably starts Thursday. Then Foot was asked about Lankin. I thought he was a little off says Adam Foot. Foot also added, you know, Lankin has some stuff going on in his own life and he’s been fighting through that a little bit. So maybe oh Kim Lanka is going through we hope that he’s okay obviously and and I think that’s like a fair context and I even I had forgotten like he took the personal leave and we don’t know what it was but he and his wife had you know he’s had a baby um earlier in the season right around preseason and you hope that everything is fine on the home front. He was able to rejoin the hockey club uh out on the road and so that would be an indication that things had improved to the point where he felt like he could leave home and and rejoin the hockey club. But yeah, I mean, these are human beings and so I I do think that’s important context at the very least. But his job is to stop pucks and he hasn’t stopped enough of them. His uh his performance has been underwhelming to say the very least for the Vancouver Conucks. And so and I don’t think anybody was terribly surprised or all that upset when the hook came out and Nikita Tolo got his whatever it was 17 minutes of the of the third period. Uh but if Demco is coming back and is going to play on Thursday, then you would assume that toilo gets sent back down. He’s up on an emergency basis. So uh he’ll be sent and Thatcher Demco returns uh his 30th birthday by the way today. So that Demco now a 30-year-old with a body that hasn’t withstood the rigors of the position that he plays. And so, uh, you know, he’s been battling back three plus weeks to get back from the Winnipeg game with the groin injury. And again, it’s never a question of can he get healthy, it’s can he stay healthy, right? That’s where we are with that Demco. And so, uh, if he’s on his game, hey, you know, he’s shown flashes already this season that uh, he can be a differencemaker. Uh, but boy, there’s a lot of difference that has to be made here. I just gave you the hockey mouth that does not uh reflect well on the Vancouver Conucks. And just the idea of that they’re going to get on a run when they still haven’t strung back toback wins together since the games in Chicago and Washington in the middle of October. Uh that was right there for them. They had the first one. You can’t start a streak without the first one. They got the one the other night against Minnesota and then they fall flat on their face here against the Detroit Red Wings. Like what do we want to see here from this Vancouver Canucks team? Like like what’s the end goal here when we we sit and we’re going to talk about this on Thursday night. Like what would you like to see from this team? I mean the push back for me is one. Like that’s that’s big. And you know the being interested and engaged in the hockey game and you know you get score on fight back like do something get angry. Yeah. Um look it’s not a team that’s built to have a ton of physical push back. We’ve said that and Evander Kane’s been pretty underwhelming in that regard. It can’t just be a Vander Kane. Um, yeah. I mean, I’d like to I I keep wanting to see these guys are professionals. Like, they’re all elite level athletes that got to the National Hockey League, uh, took their own paths to get there, but the decision making defensively without the puck, like, it’s just been so poor all season long, and it was again tonight. Um, I don’t get it. like they practice, they watch a ton of video and yet the mistakes and the overloading and two guys going to the same guy and you do the math there. If two guys are taking one guy, somebody’s open somewhere uh usually in front of the net and that was the case on the Remsteike goal and it was certainly the case on the Nate Danielson goal. Marcus Person both of those goals is out of position and on the wrong side of the ice like this is a veteran guy that they traded a firstround draft pick for. believed in and told us that he was, you know, a standup guy and a solid defender and he has just had a brutal run here in these first 30 games. And when he’s paired with Tyler Meyers, uh it just feels like bad things happen. Although was we show you the the three nothing goal. Um I think that was Person will land or if I’m not mistaken, I don’t think Meyers want to make sure that I’m not uh you know, he’s catching strays here. He was out there for the first goal certainly, but um uh Garland and Person go to the same guy and then the puck gets back to the point and nobody in position to take Danielson. He’s able to tip the puck past Lankin and there you go. That was a three nothing goal. So, uh let’s get to the stat that stands out. Stat that stands out is delivered by Uber Eats. You can see the Uber Eats bag over my shoulder there. I think we might be getting a delivery on Thursday night. Yeah. Uh hopefully you’re hungry. Yes, we think I will be a time. Exactly. Uh stat the stats out delivered by Uber Eatats. And Uber Eats is enabling fans to maximize their fandom all season long with exclusive game day deals on the app. Every time the Canucks are playing at home, you can get a buy one get one six-piece chicken McNuggets from McDonald’s in Vancouver. Only on Uber Eats. From game day eats to paper plates and napkins. If you’re hosting to all the ingredients you need to make your favorite game day dip before, during or after the game, Uber Eatats is assisting every fan’s hockey experience all season long. # crave the stats. And I think uh we’re all craving some stats for Quinn Hughes. You can see it there on screen. This guy has meant everything to the Vancouver Conucks. So, it’s it is it’s hard to watch right now to see Quinn Hughes matching a careerhigh six straight games without a point. This is a guy that had 10 points in a three-game span not that long ago and now has gone six without and has just two points in his last nine hockey games. And so, you know, there are moments in games. He’s still doing things that you marvel at, but it’s not leading to much in the way of offense. And certainly, uh, it didn’t in this hockey game when the Conucks get blanked. So, yeah, that stands out without a doubt. That is a stat that stands out. Six games now for the captain without as much as a single point. You want to get to the captain before I go on about the captain? Yeah, let’s do that. Uh postgame here was Quinn Hughes talking about four nothing loss to the Red Wings. I mean, I don’t know if we had struggle generating just struggling to capitalize. Um yeah, I mean I think we’re generating fine. else chances, but it’s taken taken 10 15 looks possibly to to score. Is that credit to him or was it a matter of shooters bearing down? I mean, on any given night, it could be either or, right? I mean, even um you know, the odds teams and league run into, you know, great goalies, but um I don’t know with uh tonight territorially like it, as you said, you guys had had your fair share of chances, but it felt like the breakdowns you did have as a team were pretty significant. How how do you sort of think about that part of your game? Yeah, I mean, I feel like they have breakdowns, too. Um but yeah, ours our were definitely significant tonight. I mean, um our goalies have been really good all year, like kept us in a lot of games, but uh just something we’re going to have to continue to work on. Um yeah, about uh not having PD tonight. I mean, you guys have had your share of injuries all season long, but just you how much more challenging without a guy like that? Yeah, it’s obviously challenging. I mean, we’re I mean, you already know where we’re at um as far as injuries and, you know, little thin in the lineup there, but um I mean, I think guys are working as hard as they can and doing what we can and um like I said, we had a chance this night. It wasn’t like, you know, we got slaughtered with the territory game. Um so, I can’t can’t really say anything there. You prided yourself on being able to stay focused regardless of the amount of noise out there. Have the last couple days been difficult? I mean, I think it’s difficult just because um you know, they want to win and where we’re at in the in the standings and you know, credit to them. They have some they have some really good players and they’ve done um a good drop good job through the draft and you see that um coming to fruition now, but it’s not like that’s um you know to three team in the league like like you know we played pretty played them well tonight and it just didn’t um couldn’t capitalize on our chances. Um as far as the other things, I mean I think um I’m doing everything I can. I think that playing as good as I can and uh if you know it wasn’t like that um for me for my standards then obviously that would be a problem. All right, there you go. Quinn Hughes, you can see the frustration on his face. You can hear it in his voice. Credits the Red Wings for building through the draft. Uh kind of thought Dylan Lin might come out for that ceremonial faceoff with the 43 Red Wings jersey and just hand it to me or take this. you you might need it someday here before uh too long. It didn’t happen that way, but uh uh we’ll see. The Red Wings team certainly that’s been linked here to Hughes uh his ties to Michigan or strong, whether it was going to school or offseason home or the national development team program, all those types of things. So, he’s certainly familiar uh with the Detroit area. But uh yeah, I mean, we said it’s tough to watch right now because uh it’s just not happening for him and it’s difficult to watch there, too. I mean, he knows the questions are coming. He’s handling those as best he can, but with his name swirling, just makes the job of being a captain that much more difficult. Yeah. And he’s I mean, he’s trying as best as he can. You know, winning helps, and that’s what exactly is not happening with this hockey club right now. But let me tell you this, like there is absolutely no chance that Quinn Hughes and his agent don’t know or are involved in anything that’s happening right now. They are mean being very well aware, kept in the loop as to what is going on and what may be going on. And Jim Rutherford has all the leverage in the world, right? He’s he he’s got a guy that, you know, has control. He can send him wherever he wants if he chooses to do so. So talks with the Devils. Yeah, sure. when Rutherford said that they were open for business and considering, you know, moving some veterans when that memo went out a few weeks ago. Teams called about Quinn Hughes then. I think there was a handful of teams that that that did call and I think the response was not not not yet, not quite. I think now it’s getting a little different. I think there’s been serious conversation about it. That’s why you hear it come out. Um, obviously the New Jersey Devils, the tie there, you know, we don’t need don’t need to explain that to anybody, but if it is going to happen, I think the Conucks might have thought that it would have been a summer thing. Might have thought it might have been a thing that happened around the Olympic break, just after that, around the trade deadline. Happening now, because of where they are, I think is something new. And when you look at that as a whole, Jim Rutherford now has the power to go and make this move. And like you mentioned earlier in the show, you don’t start the rebuild unless you’re moving Quinn Hughes. And if they’re prepared to do that, then it’s time for everything to come full circle here. And this team starts from build it right from the bolts. Strip it down right to the bolts and start from there. I guess at the outset of the season, I truly believe and I bought into this idea of win for Quinn and that they were going to try to uh show him that they could at least be competitive. And I kind of figured that I mean I predicted them to have 96 points. So I don’t know what I was thinking at the outset of this. I was I think I was the low man on on on our preseason ones, but part of it I think was me wanting playoff hockey in this city again cuz it’s fun. Playoff hockey is fun. Uh we remember the spring of 18 months ago. Um and so I thought again goending defense and enough veteran forwards that could put the puck in the net. Uh and a bounce back from Le Patterson. I said 96 points. And I thought that Queen Hughes would be here through the season and then that conversation would have to take place and difficult decisions would have to be made. But as I see this season slipping away and the Vancouver Conucks languishing in 31st spot, some nights 32nd spot, I just think if you’re an acquiring team and you’re willing to part with significant assets, like why wouldn’t you want Quinn Hughes for at least two playoff runs? And so getting him this year ahead of the deadline, whether that’s before Christmas, after Christmas, out of the Olympics, whatever. But the more I kind of go through this and watch the Canucks spin their wheels with Quinn Hughes playing close to 30 minutes on a lot of nights and they’re still in 31st place. Like it’s just not happening. It’s not happening for him. It’s not happening for them. And it just feels like it’s the right thing to do here because part of this too and I I’ve sort of come around on this way of thinking and I mean I don’t want to because I want this team to be good. I want them I want them to get back to the playoffs. I I want to see them win but this organization’s had seven years to build a winner around the best defenseman in franchise history. I what makes people think that if Quinn signs long term that they’ll get it right in the next seven years? There’s no guarantee of that. This team is lacking so much elite level talent up front on a night when they get shut out that is driven home yet again. And you know Brock Berser is a better goal scorer than he’s been for the last three weeks. He’s playing with David Camp. I cut him some slack. I believe that Jake De Brusk is a better goal scorer than he has shown of late, but he’s got to show it again. We’re 30 games into the season or Jake De Brusk has one five on five goal. Nuts. Evander Kane has one five on five goal. Like those are your top two left wingers that have played every game aside from the one that Kane missed the other night due to the illness. Power play goals, sure, but the bulk of the game is still played five on five. who have to be able to put the puck in the net at even strength and it just hasn’t happened for either of those guys. But De Brusk, I mean, that’s a wild statistic that 30 games in, he’s got one five on five goal. So, uh, the issues run deep with this hockey club and you just get the feeling with every passing loss like this one and the frustration shown uh by Quinn Hughes that it just kind of feels inevitable that uh the separation is coming. So, brace yourself for it. This segment of Rinkwide is presented on that note. Uh this segment is presented by your Pacific Toyota dealers and the Toyota Prius plug-in hybrid. I guess I I want to believe that the return of Thatcher Demco is is good news, but I I just I don’t know what to make of, you know, you just enjoy him while he’s back because it sort of feels like it won’t last. I mean, I hope it does for his sake, but injuries are a huge part of his story now. So, uh it’ll be interesting to see here get a couple of full practices in. Um and he’s done this before, so like I don’t have any fear of him jumping in mid-stream. I don’t think that’s the issue for him and finding the game, but I don’t think he’ll be at the top of his game. He’s been out for the better part of a month now. So, uh, and Buffalo can be a sneaky dangerous team. Like, they scored four tonight in a loss. Um, you know, they kind of play it loose and trade chances and generally come up on the wrong end of those types of games, but they’ve got some guys, Ta Thompson and Alex Tuck, they both scored tonight. uh you know like that could be a sort of a dangerous game for a goalie coming back off a three plus week layoff uh you know trying to find the rhythm and the routine again. I think the good news is that for everything you look at with Thatcher Demco, the dude’s gonna be able to play in an NHL game again. And I think for him that’s huge, right? Probably almost a month. Is it going to be now or four? Three and a half, four weeks. Yeah. No, it’ll actually to the day I think. Yeah. So, it’s going to be about a month for him to till he came back after that injury. And you know, it’s good for him for him to be able to come in and do that. So, you’re happy for him in that sense. But you’re right, Jeff. What thato are we getting? And if he’s a guy that’s going to get absolutely bombarded with shots because this team can’t defend well in front of him, um, you know, what’s going to happen then? And I think that, you know, if you ask him, he obviously wants to be in there. He wants to be with his guys. You know, he’s been working hard and getting ready to come back. So, we’ll put that aside. And, you know, you hope that this team gets some sort of boost playing in front of him. You know, you got a guy that, you know, has been through so much here in Vancouver with all the injuries that he’s been a part of. If you can’t get up for the game yourself, at least get up for your ace goalender who’s going to come back after being out for a month. Yeah. Well, you would have liked to have thought that they would have got a boost from getting Neil Hoglander back in the lineup and that didn’t happen. So, we’ll see what that Demco can do. Uh like I believed in him when he said it at training camp when he said if I play the way I’m capable of, I’m going to be on that US Olympic team. I think that discussion is now over, right? The mis time and the injuries. Well, the rosters have to be in at the end of the month, don’t they? Like I think this just allows him to focus now on the task at hand and that is getting back playing and doing what he can to stay healthy and I know that that’s somewhat out of your control. Uh injuries are freak things. He doesn’t want to be injured. I think we all understand that part of it. But I do think that the Olympic thing is that that ship has sailed in my mind. Like I just I don’t see a way that Hockey USA would uh add him to their list at this late stage. So that just allows him to focus on being the best goalender that he can be for the Vancouver Conucks. Um we mentioned the fact that Calgary was a winner. Yes, they were. Yeah. Minnesota beat Seattle. So uh it was win-win one lose one in the Pacific Division and Los Angeles beat Utah tonight as well. So uh nothing changes down at the bottom of the standings really as far as the Conucks are concerned. They remain uh stuck in uh 31st position. Calgary has moved past Buffalo. So, Thursday night, folks, it’s the big battle. 30 against 31 in the standings. And I guess that could change. I have to look if Nashville is playing or when Nashville uh next plays, but uh they play Colorado. Okay. Well, probably not going to change then uh down to the bottom of the standings, but the Sabres are in on Thursday. All right. Uh, yes. Nashville and Colorado among the games on the out of town scoreboard on Tuesday night, which leads us to our bet 365 line of the night. What has your attention on the upcoming NHL schedule? Nashville stinking tomorrow against the Colorado Avalanche for sure. So, we definitely are going there. That’s how I knew that they were playing the Colorado Avalanche. Like the Oilers at home, I think they’re going to smoke the Buffalo Sabres after getting smoked in Calgary. Give me the Islanders home dogs against the Vegas Golden Knights in a Mlin Celibbrini assist. I do like that. I think he’s had like four assists in his last three games, something like that. So, get some pretty good odds. You combine those four, it’s a pretty good little parlay for a Tuesday afternoon. But every bet’s never ordinary at Bet 365. Jordan says, “Love the show.” And we send that love right back at you, Jordan. Appreciate the support. Kyle saying, “It’s Manny Mel Holtra’s turn.” Uh, we’ve discussed this. I just I don’t think it’s fair to Manny to inject him into this. If they elect to make a coaching change, and I’m not sitting here trying to run out on foot out of town, but I think everything’s going to be on the table. When you’re 31st, then you had expectations. Um, you know, if they make sweeping changes, it could involve a coach. Who knows? Let’s see where all of that goes. Uh, yes, Manny had a ton of success last year. he will get a National Hockey League job at some point. I just don’t know that it’s in his best interest to assume control of whatever this sort of rudderless ship is. And I don’t know that Manny could do a whole lot more ultimately. I mean, could he get them to play better defense? Yeah, maybe. But, you know, if Manny had been at the helm since the outset of the season, I don’t think it would have changed as that much. Yeah. I mean, the roster itself is flawed. We say it all the time and the roster is exactly what it is. I don’t Scotty Bowman isn’t saving this team. And so, I think if you’re Manny, you want to be strategic about uh, you know, pouncing on opportunities here and uh, we’ll see how that plays out. So, I don’t think that it is Manny Multra’s turn uh, at this juncture. All right, speaking of coaches, Adam Foot is the head coach of the Vancouver Conucks. He addressed the media after the game. Four nothing loss to the Detroit Red Wings. Let’s hear from the coach of the podium. Start with your thoughts on the game tonight. We were rolling and uh we had a little bit of a mishap for their first. Doubled up behind the goal line there and they got a got one on us and then uh they’re buzzing for the the most part. I think I asked you the other night about whether you need to generate more chances or bear down on the ones that you get in a game like this tonight. You know, you have a couple good looks. De Brusk in particular had some opportunities. what makes the difference in terms of turning some of those chances into goals. We had a lot of good ones. Uh we there was lopsided there for a good part of the game. Um you know and then we like you said we had a couple mistakes that went in the back of our net and that’s the game the goalie was keeping them in it early and well actually for the most of the game the goalie kept them in it and um you know we’ll go review it and see if we could have dug. The guys were digging at the net. Uh so Adam, you said earlier today that you might know today or tomorrow in terms of uh Patterson. Do you have an update on his status at this point? Um I know he felt better today, which is a good sign. So there’s still We’ll I’ll know more in the next couple days as far as the time frame. I don’t want to touch on that yet, but with your team game tonight, territorially, I’m sure you’ll have liked it. But it did seem like when things did break down for your group, they they obviously broke down pretty significantly. Um, despite the defensive gains you’ve made, how do you sort of think through what you saw from your team off puck tonight? Well, we we we had a we’re all over them. We had a double up up below our goal line. It’s not not the way we play and it it cost us. Then we had another double up for a goal. Um it’s, you know, you give a team like that or any NHL team if you if you do a double when you shouldn’t two guys get put in a twoon-one situation. I mean that you can’t let that happen. Um and it happened twice and uh you know then we we had a turnover at our blue line. I think uh Huggy and Phil ran into each other there a little going for the puck and then you saw you know a tic-tac-toe goal. So, uh, so, but you know, that’s what happens. You you have full control of the game buzzing in they we’re giving them fits and and then we have a a mistake. Um, you know, you’re not going to they’re not going to score below their goal. Well, they shouldn’t. It’s happened in this league, but um, you know, that’s and you give them a little bit of life, but we it is what it is. We’ve you pulled blanket in after the the second. Can you just fill us in on the decision and where you’re at with this game right now? Well, I thought he a little off even though he we did have a mistake. The one where we uh doubled up, he had to tip the guy alone, you know. Um thought it also would give the guys a little bit of a spark or you know going into the third um you know Len has been the good pro and and sometimes it’s just not your night and uh it wasn’t all on him. He was left alone a couple times, but um just thought I’d see if we get the guys going. All right, there you go. Adam Foot in his own words. We had a few of his quotes earlier. Uh he says, you know, that’s not the way we defend. And yet two of the three goals when the goalender was in the net were double up and guys making the wrong reads. And it’s been that way all season long. So even though in his mind it’s not the way he wants them to defend, it continues to happen time and time again. And unfortunately, it is the way this team defends. Mhm. That’s exactly what it is. So, I don’t know how he goes about tidying that up, but this is personnel. I mean, you can’t make a lot in the way of changes. Pio Joseph could come in. I don’t know that that makes them any stronger defensively. And as we said, you know, this is all happening with Quinn Hughes playing half the night, most of the night. And Philip Aronic playing some of the best hockey of his career. This wasn’t maybe his best night against his former team. Uh and he did turn that puck over on the on the two nothing goal. Um but still like you know you’ve got one of the best defenseman in the league who maybe not at the top of his game uh but he plays a ton and Philip Ronic has played reasonably well and through it all. Uh they’ve been one of the most permissive teams in the National Hockey League and um it just again defies sort of explanation from where we were at the starting point. Uh I think they did make the right call. Quinn didn’t play a lot down the stretch and and why should he? I mean, he’s played so much of late. Uh, ends up playing 25 minutes and 46 seconds, which by his standards is pretty manageable. And, uh, he’ll be back on the practice ice with the rest of them tomorrow. And, you know, licking their wounds here and trying to get it right when they take on the Buffalo Sabres on Thursday night. We mentioned the Sabres were stomped 7-4 in Calgary tonight. Quick turnaround as you had in your line of there into Edmonton. So, this is the front half of back to backs. Uh, they’re on a six-game road trip that started in Philadelphia. They lost to the Flyers, they lost in Winnipeg, they lost to Calgary, and now they run into Edmonton. So, Vancouver will be their fifth stop. They’ll finish up in Seattle. Uh, and they come limping in here. And they’ve lost five of seven. They’re 29 and two on the road. Somebody pointed this out to me earlier today. They have two road wins all season. Okay? Both of them beyond regulation. They have not beaten an opponent on the road since last March at some point. So, it’s almost guaranteed points night when you’re facing the Buffalo Sabres 29 and two. Not so fast, Jeff. I know they may run into their match here in Vancouver. Uh Tage Thompson scored again tonight has 13 goals. Alex Tuck had a goal. He’s up to 25 points to lead the team. Ross Misin. This surprised me when I saw that prior to tonight he had one goal on the season. This is a guy that in the last three years as a defenseman has scored 15 then got 20 and last year had 17 and for the longest time was stuck on one but he did score tonight. And Zack Benson the homecoming for the Chilowak kid. He’s still looking for his first goal. Now he missed some time early uh but double digit goal scorer in each of his first two seasons in the National Hockey League without a goal. So, uh, you know, some key guys that are struggling where have you heard that before? Uh, and also five on five save percentage and this probably took a hit tonight. I haven’t seen the updated numbers, but they came into the night 27th in the league. So, uh, they’ve used a bunch of goenders kind of like the Canucks have, not getting a lot of saves. UPL had the start tonight, but he got the hook. Uh, probably because they’re going to run it back out there against Edmonton tomorrow. Um, and Alex Lion came on in relief. So, your guess is as good as mine who will start for the Sabres here against the Conucks on Thursday. And again, that’s the final home game before Christmas, which is strange to say because usually there’s a game like right before Christmas. They they sort of have their annual holiday game, you know, the 23rd, 22nd. San Jose kind of feels as always in. Uh that’s not the case this year. The Conucks are heading out on a five-game road trip that will start in of all places, New Jersey on Sunday. It’s a 9:30 start, 12:30 there, but uh uh we I mean, who knows what happens, but right now it looks like two of the Hughes brothers at least will go headtohead. Jack obviously recovering from hand injury, so he’s not involved, but um yeah, I mean, just kind of funny the way the schedule works with the the ties to Michigan that we talked about and Detroit’s in town tonight and then the Canucks start this fivegame road trip in New Jersey. So, the noise isn’t going to quiet down. No, it is not. Not at all. Um, so we’ll see where things go. We’ll seeuh who’s still on this roster by the time the Conucks head out on the road after the Buffalo game. It’s New Jersey, the Rangers, and the Islanders. There’s days off between those games. So they’re Hey, at least they’re getting like a week in Manhattan at Christmas time. They might need it. Nothing wrong with that. And then uh they’ll face Rick Tocket and the Philadelphia Flyers. They’ll finish up in Philly before Christmas. And uh the watch party night, the Saturday game is Boston. So, that is the road trip uh that’s coming up for the Conucks after this game at home against the Buffalo Savers. And again, um you know, will any of these guys break out? We talk about chances, but Kefir Sherwood, it’s 10 games without a goal. Jake De Brusk nine, Brock Besser, one goal in 12, Connor Garland, one goal in eight, and Quinn now six games without a point. And of course, Elias Patterson sounds like he will not be part of the proceedings on Thursday. But hey, maybe that will. We’ll see what practice brings. A couple of days of practice before they take on the Sabres on Thursday. All right, that is going to do it for us. The fall flat on home ice. Done that a lot this season. 49 and one now uh in front of the paying customers. Four wins in 14 home games. All right. Uh yes, that is uh going to be a wrap for the program. Jake Fraser is the producer and we appreciate his support. You’re back with me on Thursday, sir. Okay. Well, it uh I don’t think it can be a whole lot worse than this. So, let’s hope that it does get a little bit better uh for the Vancouver Conucks. Uh again, thanks for hanging in there. We appreciate your support. We do this after each and every game. 1. When I see a coach pull a goalie too early it always sucks the life out of a team and shows little confidence and makes the loss even worse! It’s such a low percentage, poor decision. To pull the goalie with 5 minutes left makes no sense!

  2. The linesmen on faceoffs has gone completely bonkers… DROP THE PUCK ALREADY!!! It feels like at least 1/2 the faceoffs (MAYBE IT'S MORE?) are met with warnings or call-outs, to one of both players… And MOST of the time, it's because the linesmen stand there, FOREVER, until WAITING for a chance to 'prove their authority', and wave someone out, INSTEAD of simply, DROPPING THE PUCK! It has gotten ABSURD in the NHL, and frankly, embarrassiing.
