Sucks but kinda what I expected, he was waiting for someone to cave and offer the 5th year.

  1. Good job GMBC and Nutting, you undelivered in yet another offer. *Now actually come through on a signing.*

  2. I never expected us to land him, but the ESPN notification I just got still pissed me off.

  3. Wha defines the buccos is what they do now. Logically give that money to another dude like Pete Alonso, Cody Bellinger, Murakami. Show that you’re serious about winning and spend money on real talent. Schwarber was always a long shot. Can’t just be “we tried”.

  4. If you ever thought the Pirates were gonna sign a top FA I have a bridge to sell you.

  5. No one else was getting him at that number except for the Phillies and I wouldn’t have done five years.

  6. Not surprising. Pirates have to offer both more years and more money to get anyone decent in free agency.

  7. I don’t blame them for not offering the 5th year. He’s going to be 33. These new MLB contracts of offering players contracts that don’t expire until they hit their near 40’s is insane. I’m sorry but a 37 year old schwarber would be no help to us

  8. I’m sorry there’s just no way a small market team could afford to add the 5th year to that contract. 4/$120m was a very fair offer and the exact same annual value the Phillies offered. Very few if any players are worth $30 million in their age 37 season. A huge market can eat that money, a small market team can’t. Now I’d be very willing to give that exact same 5 year contract to Alonso since he’s younger.

  9. We lead the league in almost getting people. Keep track of all the guys we don’t get this year so you don’t get heartbroken when the same thing happens next year.

  10. Gotta beat the Red Sox on Alonso. Maybe BAL. Alonso is actually at the Winter meetings. If news doesn’t leak out that he’s meeting with the Pirates, move onto to the next target.

  11. If we’re serious about spending (which I still am unconvinced of) I’d rather spend cash on something like okamoto + polanco + bader than throw it all on schwarber

  12. Never was expecting Schwarber or any of the other top free agents for that matter to sign with the Pirates. But, if you offer Schwarber 25 mill a year, the Pirates have to go and spend at least that amount on other players.

  13. I said this earlier this morning to a friend. He will likely get a 5th year from somewhere, and as much as I’d like him now, I don’t think i’ll care for him 3 or 4 years from now.

Interesting to note that our AAV was the higher offer, but I’m sure the 5th year and going back to Philly sealed it.

  14. Unless there was some rift with him and the Phillies I don’t understand why we, or anyone, would think we could just pull him away.
