And if you want to be in every day, all you have to do is just follow along wherever you get podcast. And of course you can watch on YouTube as well. Today we’re going to be talking about Melbourne and Alexandovich as they come up big in the Sharks 4 to1 win over the Carolina Hurricanes. We’ll look at other people who stood out in this game, including yes, John Clingberg himself, who had a solid performance today as well. And then dig into the numbers, as again the San Jose Sharks, they withstand uh the Hurricanes pressure and are able to come away with a 4:1 win. So before we get to all that, do want to let you guys know that today’s episode is brought to you by Game Time. download the game 10 time app, create an account, and use code locked on NHL for $20 off your first purchase. So, um, if you watch the preview, I said one of the potential paths to victory, uh, is just Min Celebrini being the best player on the ice. It goes to show you uh Melbrini was the best player on the ice today as he uh puts on the Superman cape. Goal, two assists, was all over the ice today and a major factor in why the Sharks won this game. And yes, I know the goal was an empty netter, but that was a muchdeserved empty netter, right? Sometimes just some guys have that game and they deserve a goal. And again, at the end of the year, they don’t ask how, they just ask how many. and M celebrini’s three points in his 100th career NHL game uh were a big part of why the Sharks were able to upset uh this Carolina Hurricanes team and Celbr been a little quiet the past couple games especially on the the score sheet right held off the with two straight games without getting a point uh really bounced back today um and the way he did it right of utilizing his teammates um but then just being Mack on Celibbrini, right? And and the first goal, the the Kong Graph goal, right, really early into this game. Uh where Celerbrini just cuts back and the pass from Celabbrini to Colin Graph there. Uh just the degree of difficulty to be cutting back looking around the defender who you cut back across uh and then put this puck basically on Colin Graph’s stick so that it would bounce in. Um, credit to Graph who who had a great game in in this game, but Celabbrini there, uh, he could not have walked over and and put it in a better spot than he did in that in that position there for for Graph’s first goal, right? Um, and you know, even like you look at some of the other goals that that Celibbrini was involved in, right? the Clingberg one where he finds John Clingberg just scooting down the slot right there and Klingberg is able to crush that. Uh even the the Wenberg goal where Clingberg like Celbrini doesn’t get an assist but he starts that play um and gets it you know nice power play there that that Wenberg is able to capitalize on him. Uh even the empty netter right celibbrini wins a puck battle uh along the boards there in the six on five situation. Dumps it out to to Wenberg. Uh great work by Wenberg there to one draw the penalty uh and then two to be able to get to his feet and find Cibbrini who’s just going to the net and Cabbrini emphatically dumps it into uh the net for to kind of seal the deal there. But um we we’ve talked about before with celebrating right when the Sharks need him the most and this was a game where the Sharks needed him the most because right you you got crushed by the Caps. Um you played I mean the the team played pretty poorly against uh the Stars in a game that was kind of there for the taking for a good chunk but they just couldn’t figure anything out. Um you need to celebrate. I need to bounce back and have a big performance and this was that game right where he just put the team on his back and there’s plenty of guys played really well. I don’t want you to think it was just all Min Celebrin. We’ll talk about some of the other guys who played well in this game, but um he’s your most important player, right? He is the leader of the team and he is, you know, the de facto captain without wearing the sea. Like this was a game where you needed your best players to play their best uh against one of the best teams in the NHL in the Carolina Hurricanes and you got that from Monabbrini. uh and continues to show improve why he is going to be a franchise changing player. Uh and again it’s it’s already been a hundred games which is kind of crazy and it’s even more crazy that uh William Equin hit his 200th game today as well. So pretty crazy that both these guys hitting their these big milestones here. Um but Celibbrini did exactly what you needed him to do, right? leading through uh leading by example and today was was like the Sharks don’t win this game without Mlin celebrating. Um and another player who the Sharks don’t win this game without is Alex Nelkovich, right? The Nadulkovich revenge game against the team that drafted him, traded him away. Uh he bounces back in a big time performance. And not to say Nadel Nadulkovich is playing been playing poorly or anything like that lately, but this was a a big time Nadulkovich performance, right? Where um especially in the third period where you needed him to step up and really hold back you know this this Carolina Hurricanes team which right they want to control the puck. They want to shoot as often as possible and they put a lot of stress on your defense and on your goalie to try to just hang in there, right? And that was kind of the formula, especially in the third period, was just hang in there. And Nadulkovich was big today. Uh 29 saves on 30 shots, one goal allowed. And even the goal that was allowed, I thought it was a I thought it was a high touch. Now, I get why, again, I’m watching the same, you know, it’s not like I I’m watching the same TV copy that you are. And and I get why Orsovski didn’t challenge it. they probably didn’t have a conclusive enough angle of it to be able to challenge it. And then if you lose that challenge, right, not only do you give up the goal, you’re back on the penalty kill. So, this is probably one of those where they didn’t want the momentum to just get out of control here. Uh, I get why they didn’t challenge it, but again, I’m just watching on my couch. It looked like a high touch, like a high stick play there from uh Stall, but it is what it is. But good job by by Nadelovic to really lock it down this game. Uh like I said, one goal against expected goals against 3.17. So he saved two goals over expected, 967 save percentage, seven of eight high danger, nine of nine mid- danger, and 12 of 12 low danger save. So, um, we’ll get to it at the end, but the Sharks did a really good job of of keeping life easy for Dulkovage, especially like in front of the crease until kind of the third period when um, Carolina was basically all in to try to tie this thing up. But um you know I think we’re really like the way Nadelovich and Ascrov have really found their games since November. Uh, the Sharks are going to continue to be in these types of of games and we we know the formula, right, is try to get to a lead, hope that Natokovic and Asrov can bail you out um in the third period and and it’s not going to work every night, but tonight it definitely worked for the Sharks and and the way Nadulkovich was playing, like his movement, uh his tracking of the puck, like he was all over it, making really good stops. you didn’t see a lot of second chance opportunities from like a lot of like clear like second chance opportunities. It had to be um for the Hurricanes. It was a lot of retrieve and reset. It wasn’t a lot of like you know just flurries like you didn’t see a lot of the flurries and I speak I think that speaks to his rebound control in this game. I think to the defense for helping to kind of keep things clear in front of him uh tonight. So like yeah the the Sharks going to continue to hang around. Uh, and I know people got mad like, oh, you would mention the playoffs and look what happened again. You just played three of like the four best teams in the NHL, right? You played the Hurricane or you played the Capitals, uh, where you got smoked, right? You played the Stars, which that game was really close for a really long time until things got away from you at the end. And then you beat this Carolina Hurricanes team because you took advantage of your opportunities here. So, um I think the Sharks have been like they’re you’re seeing their game improve here and they’ve got a couple games coming up against uh they play the Flyers and they they play Toronto here which I think are two even games and I I think the Sharks are going to have chances to win those games as well. And I know the Flyers have been off to a better start than expected and I know the Maple Leafs it’s been a bad start but they’ve been kind of playing better here. the these are going to be big opportunities to see if the Sharks can try to kind of uh you know come away with with a winning road record or winning road trip here. So u we’re going to talk about some of the other standouts including yes that John Clingberg who um I thought played uh I had a very nice response to all the criticism that he’s gotten. Uh we’ll talk about Wenberg, we’ll talk about Colin Graph, some of the other big standouts in this game uh just here in one second. I’m also really excited to tell you about my favorite pair of jeans wear brand, Doer. I’ve been living in the performance denim straight jeans and honestly they completely changed the game for me. I love my Dior jeans because one, they look good on me and it’s important that jeans look good on you, but two, they’re super comfy. They have five times the stretch of traditional denim. They feel stretchy without actually looking stretchy. Doer combines classic jeans where style with the kind of comfort and performance you get from athletic wear. The best of both worlds. And there’s a reason why they call them the world’s most comfortable pants. But don’t take my word for it. Go check out a pair for yourself. Do or open up a store in Hayes Valley so you can feel the difference firsthand. Go check them out on 567 Haze Street. Mention our promo code locked on SF in store. You’ll get 15% off. Uh let’s continue by discussing this uh Sharks team uh as as there were some highlights and I think John Clingberg who has gotten um plenty of criticism from basically everybody in the Sharks community, myself included, etc., etc., He played well today, right? And this is I think the Clingberg when you know War Ryan or Shang had a really good piece on San Jose hockey now where you know he asked Warsovski about you know what they expect from Clingberg and why why is Clingberg basically gotten such a long leash right and they feel with him that there yes he’s changing his role as the power play specialist um you know and kind of what he was previously but they feel that his ceiling is still higher than anything else that they have out there right now. So, which I get I I get the Warsovski where he’s coming from. Um, and you saw I think today on the power play like they had some changes, right? Will Smith moved off. Um, and I thought the power play looked really good today and it’s because they kept the puck moving, right? And even on the goal there, um, you see right, Celebrity gets it. He gets it over to Clingberg. Clingberg just all he does first thing he does is he just passes it over to Equin who gets a shot and then Wenberg is there for the rebounder to to you know give the Sharks a lead there. Um with a 3-1 lead there, right? That’s what Clingberg’s whole job like he just needs to be better at getting the puck moving more quickly, right? And not holding on to the puck and which we’ve seen at the blue line because we know, right? if he holds on to the puck and any pressure that he has, it just hasn’t worked out for him. So, uh, but I thought he played really well today, especially in, uh, especially on the power play. And, you know, I think all the power plays honestly looked like both power play opportunities that the Sharks had. I think they looked pretty good and and you saw just that kind of change in philosophy or you know I won’t say change philosophy but I you know trying to make sure that you’re just getting shots on goal especially for a team like the Sharks that do struggle to generate shots. Um, I think it was a good sign for San Jose that and and I know the Hurricane’s power play isn’t penalty kill isn’t super great, but I think it was a good sign for him that he was getting uh more opportunities there. And uh you you were seeing the power play I think be a little bit better than what we’ve seen as of late. So, um I do want to talk about some of the other standouts of of course uh Colin Graph who’s playing on the top line uh with Wenberg, not with Wenberg, sorry, with with Celibbrini and Smith. Congraph’s got that dog in him. That dog for 60 with Congraph is off the charts and you saw it today. And you again, I don’t know if this is a long-term fit uh with them and you know, but right now this fit really works, especially with Colin Graph’s forche, his ability to drive to the net uh and his defensive acumen. I think it takes a little bit pressure off Celabbrini and it allows Will Smith to kind of do cool Will Smith things. So, I’d like to see this line together for, you know, a couple games here to see how they perform. Uh this could have just been a one- hit wonder where right when whereski kind of pushed the right buttons for the right day, but um it kind of makes a lot of sense with just the way especially the way Colin Graph has has played this season. Um and he’s going to get a lot of opportunities to to bury some pucks if he can continue to do what he’s doing. And especially again that first pass from Celabbrini to him was absolutely ridiculous. uh like I was just still thinking about that. So, I thought Graph played really well today. Uh continues to be an absolute monster on the PK. Uh and he’s been earning more and just earning more and more from from the Sharks and which is what you love to see. So, um and then I want to shout out Wenberg who Wenberg I thought had another really good game today. Uh right goal and an assist. um you know and we we kind of talked about like his production and like how he got the production there, but um you know that line was going to be facing tough matchups and I thought they played really well. Um and you again you see with him and Eklan where those two guys they get that cycle game going and get that possession going which the Sharks need a little bit more of that. Uh especially with the celebrity line which is very much like a run and gun line like having that Ekllin Wenberg line be able to kind of gen like just generate offense a little bit more old school style where like let’s just get the cycle going. Let’s just kind of wear the team the other team down and Wenberg was great on the PK today. Had a big block too um to try to help kind of preserve the lead. And um I thought Wenberg played a really good game today. like when we get to the numbers that line got crushed. Absolutely crushed. Um you know, but uh I I think Wenberg had a really strong game today. And then I want to shout out Sam Dickinson. So um Dickinson continuing I think you’re you’re seeing he is gaining more and more trust from Ryan Warski and the coaching staff. Right. Big PK. Uh third period you’re up by two. Dickinson’s out there with Lety uh for a big PK out there. Um I liked and again Dickinson I think is getting better at picking his spots. Uh there was a rush opportunity where he c like he gets on his horse and like that’s that that skating that Dickinson has right where he is able to get open and he can fly especially for a guy that big and he just has the puck bounce off his net bounce over his his stick and or us. I think that’s a really good opportunity for uh for San Jose to to score there. But um you see his improved board play where he’s getting stronger on the boards and he’s doing a better job of just eliminating his guy. Uh so really yes, good opport good I think a really good game from Dickas and you’ve seen the ice time go up. Um he today he was over 1738. Um like you’re again it’s it’s the lowest what you would expect but you’re just seeing like the Sharks are able to distribute the ice time a little bit better with Dickinson not playing 12 minutes tonight right now you can have like Ferraro led the way with 21 minutes or with basically 21 minutes at 2020 uh and then like let Clingberg and Dickinson like nobody there’s just a much better a much more even distribution of of ice and of ice time I think he continues to play the way he’s playing, we’re going to start to see him potentially crack that power play unit, which we are all waiting for. So, but I know the production hasn’t been there, but the game is there. Like the the Dickinson game is is really starting to come along. So, um we’re going to dig into the numbers of this game. Uh talk about how the Sharks played really well in the second and it was hanging there, kiddie, for the third period. So, we’ll get to that here in just one second. NFL Sundays move fast. Uh, make sure you tag Locked on National Podcast Network on any social platform and you might be getting a free code for the Everydayer Club. Uh, so yes, that’s Locked Onodcast Network. uh give you a month to check out the Everydayer Club. So, um yeah, let’s get to it. All right. Um numbers, man, this game. All right. Uh so, the Sharks uh 32 or sorry, 5206 of 515. And again, we talked about the Hurricanes, their whole MMO is shot attempts, shoot, right? Um 72 to 32 shot attempts in favor of the Carolina Hurricanes. 69 very nice. 23% Corsy4 to 30.77% of course in favor of the Hurricanes. Actual shots though at five on five 22 to6. So the Hurricanes took 72 shot attempts and they only got 22 of them on net. Sharks took 32 and they got 16 on net. So quality over quantity for the the Sharks. 32 to 17 scoring chances in favor of the Hurricanes. 8 to5 high danger chances in favor of the Sharks. Uh 2.07 expected goals. Four to 1.25 expected goals for the Sharks. Uh in favor, sorry, the Hurricanes in favor of the Hurricanes there. So the Hurricanes like they’re just shooting like crazy, but they’re not getting a lot of quality chances until really the third period. Um, and the second period I think really kind of highlights this where Sharks the 1919 five on five 17 to 16 shot attempts in favor of the Sharks. Actual shots was 7 to6 nine to five scoring chances, 5 to1 high danger chances for San Jose. It’s like a really good quality period, right? Uh, for them third period where the Hurricanes like this was desperation time. They’re down two. They’re trying to get back in this game. Um, and we we know, right, the Sharks were hanging their kitty this whole time. 34 to9 shot attempts. Um, 10 to six actual shots at five on five. So again, they took 34 shot attempts. They only got 10 shots on goal. The Sharks took nine shot attempts, which you want to take more shot attempts than that, but six of them got on goal. 19 to2 scoring chances and four to nothing high danger chances. So, um, while you don’t want to live in this world where you’re giving up 34 shot attempts, the Sharks did a really good job of of right limiting the damage, especially with the expected goals for of only 2.07. Like, that is a a the RA like the ratio of shot attempts to quality there is way off. And I think that speaks to the Sharks and their ability to try to make life a little bit easier in front of Alex Nadelovich today. So, as for the lines, uh, Smith Celebrity Graph played 11:01 8. And again, these numbers are going to be super skewed because of the shot differential, right? I mean, the Sharks gave up, um, 74 72 shot attempts, right? There’s a plus 40 shot differential in favor shot attempt differential in favor of the hurricane. So, these numbers are going to be really screwed up. So 8 to3 shot attempts uh four to six uh actual shots for the Celabbrini line had the goal of course 27 to22 expected goals four four to seven scoring chances 3 to2 high danger chances so again quality over quantity for the celebriny line right you saw anytime that line had it going it was up close it was in great positions to score um Equin Wenberg to Foley two to 15 shot attempts in 10 minutes of five on five, one to one shots. So that line again, they gave up 15 shot attempts, but only one shot got on net. Uh 01 to 0.2 expected goals, four 0 to six scoring chances, zero to zero high danger chances. So again, yes, you’re giving up a bunch of shot attempts, but you’re not letting them get to Nadelovic, making his life as easy as possible. So um goodro stop Goddet 9003 shot attempts uh 903 time shot attempts are 5 to8 two to three actual shots 02 to.13 expected goals four 2 to2 scoring chances 0 to zero high danger chances at five on five and then skinner Kerschef I actually really like this line today uh 749 6 to5 shot attempts 3 to3 actual shots 31 to43 expected goals four 3 to high scoring chances, two to zero high danger chances. Um Jeff Skinner looked really good in his return. A little feisty today as well. Uh he’s overdue for a goal or two here. Uh really liked how he played as well today. Um so yeah, like not not too bad. I like this is a really nice win for the Sharks who again we’re going to ride this as long as it can you can right now. But especially the way that they played the last two games, right, where you just get blown out like everything that could go wrong went wrong against the Caps and you just played slow and and poor uh especially the start of the Stars game. Really good response, right? And I think that shows the maturity of this team as it continue like figure this thing out where two really bad games. Let’s again again like you can only play the teams in front of you and unfortunately you got dealt this brutal stretch here but I think there’s a big response for them and now the key is can you keep it going against two teams who are in the same kind of tier as you in the Flyers and then the Maple Leafs. So um we’ll see we’ll see where this Sharks team keeps keeps going. So um again want to thank you for making locked on Sharks your first listen. Uh, go check out the all access uh thing. Uh, it’s pretty cool. Like there’s going to be a lot of cool stuff. I have a Sam Dickinson um like I can do cool stuff like a like Sam Dickinson shift by shift and there uh that’ll be in the newsletter on Monday where you actually I talk through we we have the entire game of Sam Dickinson’s uh every shift from Sam Dickson’s game against the stars and we talk through it and what he did wrong, what I really liked from that game, etc. etc. Like there’s a bunch of cool stuff that I’m able to do on there that I can’t do with the normal podcast. So, uh go check it out. Again, that’s uh locked on.ssupcast.com. Uh and go check that out. So, uh we’ll be back tomorrow. Believing Klingbergs ceiling is higher than Dickey's potential is ludicrous
More then points on the ice. Board play
He always bounces back stronger after defeat. Great win
Nice win but playing like this in the third is unsustainable.
Sharks have gone 1-3 against the top 4 teams in the league the last two weeks. We take that
I was there and it was awesome! Go 🦈s!
Klingberg = a broken clock is right twice a day.
