[Passan] Closer Edwin Díaz’s deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers is for three years and $69 million, sources tell ESPN. The Dodgers, who were targeting bullpen help this winter, got the best closer on the market, setting a new AAV record for relievers.

  1. “Quiet winter”, “don’t need to make a splash”, biggest AAV ever for a reliever lol

  2. METS COULDNT MATCH THREE YEARS?? WHO CARES ABOUT AAV WHEN ITS JUST THREE YEARS

THATS THE ENTIRETY OF HIS PRIME WITH NO REAL RISK

  3. honestly surprised the mets didn’t match that or go up. unless diaz didn’t give them a chance to

  4. If there weren’t a roster size limit the Dodgers would just sign all of the baseball players.

  5. That’s amazing value. I’d balk at 23m AAV if it was 5 years. 3 years? No hesitation.

He must’ve really wanted to be in LA cause I’d have to imagine NYM would’ve done this in a heartbeat.

  6. Feels like the Mets could have beat this, and just decided not to. Sad.

Paying $23M for a reliever (pending deferrals) is kinda crazy though. His AAV is more than 1.5x the AAV of Devin Williams (again, pending deferrals).

  7. Hat tip to the Dodgers for spending in proportion to their revenue. Glares hatefully at Yankee ownership.

  8. Too funny. At this point, I just want to see the Dodgers have the best player at every position and the best pitchers at every spot. Just to see how many games they can win. Whatever.

  9. Great for both parties. Díaz gets the bag, Dodgers get their guy on a short term deal. Not so good for the rest of the NL though!

  10. Diaz wanted to be a Dodger. That’s the take away here. Not that the Mets are operating like a small market. There is no way to seriously say that about the team when they have a 300+ mil payroll every year. This is more about Diaz than it is about the Mets (or Stearns for that matter)

  11. So far the Mets offseason:

    1. Downgraded at closer ✅
    2. Created a hole in left field ✅
    3. Acquired a 35 y/o second baseman off a career worst season ✅

  12. Why is everyone so upset? The Dodgers *have* to do this because they’re going to have at least four concurrent pitching injuries throughout the season.

  13. Players WANT to sign with LA. Don’t believe the BS about years, “respect,” taxes, etc. They have no problem signing with the Dodgers for less than the most competitive offer.

  14. This is… such a great deal for the Dodgers wtf. 3 years!?

There’s no way he couldn’t have gotten a longer deal elsewhere to carry him a little past his prime.
