And this began to develop last night right before Monday Night Football that Philip Rivers potentially was going to sign with the Indianapolis Colts. It’s official. Adam Shfter with this that 44year-old Philip Rivers who has not played in the NFL since 2020 in that COVID season signing to the quarterback needy Indianapolis Colts on their practice squad. Ladies and gentlemen, as I’m recording this show, it is Tuesday, December 9th of 2025. This is one of the craziest stories that I can remember in recent NFL history. And I’m trying to find a comparison to this. Really can’t find one. Like when Michael Jordan went away and played baseball, then came back to the NBA, he came back and was still a championship player. When he retired a second time from the Chicago Bulls and signed with the Washington Wizards, it was nothing like this where he was gone for several seasons. Philip Rivers is a 44 year old quarterback who has not played since 2020. He’s been coaching high school football since then. He is Hall of Fame eligible this year. He is a grandfather and the 44year-old Rivers is older than his head coach and Shane Stiken and his offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cter. And there have only been four quarterbacks in the history of the NFL to start at 44 years old or older. And we’ll see if Rivers can join this list. Tom Brady, Vinnie Testie, Steve Deberg, and Warren Moon. Will Philip Rivers become the fifth? And for the Colts, obviously this is as desperate as it gets. They are eight and4. They have lost three games in a row. They are one and4 in their last five games and they are clinging to hope that they can make the playoffs in a wild AFC. The Denver Broncos number one seed in the conference at 11-2. New England Patriots right behind them two seed at 11-2. And then that’s where things start to get very interesting. The Jags three spot at 9 and4. Steelers leading the AFC North at seven and six. The three wildcard teams, Chargers 9-4 after that Monday night win over the Eagles, Buffalo Bills 9-4, the six seed, and then the surging Houston Texans there at 8 and five. You see the Colts there also at 8 and5 on the outside looking in. They got off to a really hot start. They have really cooled off late and now obviously the Colts making this move because Daniel Jones out for the season with the torn Achilles on top of the broken bone that he had in his leg prior to that and the AFC South standings. There is a pathway where the Colts here with four games to go could end up winning this division, potentially making the playoffs. Jags at 9-4, Texans 8-5, Colts 8-5, but a really arduous schedule coming up, and then the Titans there at 2 and 11. It is important to note that with Daniel Jones out, Riley Leonard was the quarterback who came in for him against Jacksonville on Sunday. And maybe this is a move to team up Riley Leonard with Philip Rivers because they work with one another during the offseason training together and Rivers has kind of taken Riley Leonard under his wing to develop him as a quarterback. This could be a move to do that, but I’m not sure how good of an NFL quarterback Riley Leonard is. And he has a knee injury. He might not be able to play this upcoming week. And so there is a realistic chance that Philip Rivers could start against the NerS in week 16. Think about how nutty that is. And we go through some factoids here. He’s one of 26 modern era semi-finalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame class of 2026. If he signs to the Colts active roster, his name will come off that list. the clock will restart and his Hall of Fame candidacy will be delayed by 5 years. Seems like he’s not in a hurry. Albert Brerier, Philip Rivers was with the team in 2020, also with its head coach Shane Stiken as a Charger from 2011 to 2012. So, they go back a long ways and 2014 to 2019. Over their final four years together, Stiken was River’s position coach and became his interim offensive coordinator for the back half of the 2019 season. And so the quarterback options for the Colts against the Niners in two games in prime time on Monday Night Football, Riley Leonard, 23 years old, and then the elder statesman, Philip Rivers, who is 21 years his senior at 44 years old. You know what’s also kind of wild about this story and how it has Niner ties? This almost happened to the NerS in 2022 after Trey Lance and Jimmy Garopolo both got hurt. The QB3 for the Niners. Brock Pury, Mr. Irrelevant, the final pick in the draft that year. So, the Niners had serious conversations with Philip Rivers after he had not played, as I mentioned, since 2020 about signing with the NerS that year. and he nearly signed with San Francisco to team up with Kyle Shanahan to be this team’s quarterback in 2022 when the Niners under Perie made it to the NFC Championship game before losing to the Eagles. World’s colliding and I hope in a way that Philip Rivers plays against the Niners in two games. Can you imagine him playing against the Seahawks this week on the road in Seattle? So last night, Monday Night Football, more implications inside the NFC playoff picture, the Philadelphia Eagles losing just an insane game that featured kind of everything. 22 to9 to the Chargers in overtime. The big story in that game, Jaylen Herz turning it over five times. He threw four picks for the first time in his career. Also had a fumble. There was a play where he threw a pick. The defensive tackle intercepted the pass, fumbled the football. Jaylen Herz recovered the ball, then he fumbled, and it was recovered by the Chargers. Saquon Barkley with a good game. Had a 52-y rushing touchdown, 20 carries for 122 yards and a touchdown. AJ Brown, six catches for 100 yards, but did have a couple of crucial drops. Justin Herbert’s numbers won’t blow you away, but on the ground, he was highly impactful. And this Chargers defense continues to show why they’re one of the top units in the NFL. And so no big changes to the NFC playoff picture other than the Eagles record going from 8 and4 to 8 and five. But with week 14 now in the rear view, the Niners moved up from the seven seed to the six seed. And if the season were to end today, we would get Eagles Niners. So, let’s spend a couple of moments talking about that since it has to do with today’s NFL news. If the season were to end today, the six-seated San Francisco 49ers would travel to Philadelphia to play the three-seated Philadelphia Eagles. And I would take the Niners to win that game in the wildard round and advance in the NFC playoffs. The 49ers are rolling right now. They’ve won three games in a row. The Eagles are on the other side of that. They’re collapsing, falling apart at the seams, and they’re losers of three consecutive games. And I think that confidence goes a long way. The NerS are riding this high currently, and the Eagles are playing tight, and they’re unraveling. Now, this Ner’s offense against this highly legitimate Eagles defense would be a hard matchup. Kyle Shanahan against Vic Fangio. Get your popcorn ready. But this Eagles defense does struggle against the run, especially against Ben Johnson on Black Friday. He’s kind of the Midwest Kyle Shanahan to steal that from John Mikov, one of the best NFL podcasters out there. And this Niners defense, they might be depleted, but I trust Robert Salah against Kevin Patulo, who is in over his skis as the Eagles offensive coordinator. Lastly, I think momentum matters. The NerS have it and the Eagles do not. And so if the NFC playoff picture remains as such, that is a firstround wildcard game that we could see between the NerS and the Eagles. Roster move for San Francisco. Jeremy Fowler tweeting this out just moments ago that wide receiver Javon Baker signing with the Niners practice squad, the former Patriots draft pick, gets a look in Kyle Shanahan’s offense. So let’s talk more about him and we’ll cut this up with the YouTube short as well. The 49ers have added a new wide receiver to their practice squad. Former fourth round pick by the New England Patriots last year, Javon Baker. He played as college football at Alabama, won an Attie there, and then transferred to Central Florida. Solid size at 61, 2022 lbs. Isn’t a blazer as far as his speed, 454, 40yard dash. In 2023, he had 52 catches at UCF. led the country with more than,00 receiving yards and 21.9 yards per catch. Only had one catch for 12 yards with the Patriots last year. He was let go by this new regime. Signed with the Eagles practice squad. Now he’s getting a look with Kyle Shanahan’s offense.
