Jorge Polanco Is Expected to Sign SOON, But Will It Be Back With the Seattle Mariners?!

Jorge Palano is expected to sign before the end of the winter meetings, but will he be back with the Mariners? We’ll discuss coming up here on the Locked On Mariners podcast. Colobby, hit it. You are Locked On Mariners, your daily Seattle Mariners podcast, part of the Locked On podcast network. Your team every day. Ahoy sailors, it is Tuesday, December 9th, 2025. You’re listening to the Locked On Maris podcast, part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, now the number one sports podcast network. My name is Ting Gonzalez and I’m joined as always by my host Colobby Patnood. We’re two lifelong Maris fans who’ve been covering the team for over half a decade. And today we’re going to push back top five Tuesday so we can talk a little bit about what’s come out of the winter meeting so far. We’ve got an update on Jorge Palano, more reports about the Mariners and Catel Marte. The Mars are also looking for even more bullpin help after landing Jose Ferrer this past weekend. And so we’ll talk about all that and I guess I’ll indulge KBY on this Padres stuff as well. Um but before we before we do all that Calamezo on Yeah. I want to shout out our title sponsor today, FanDuel. Uh if you want to be right in the middle of the action this season, visit fanuel.com and place your NFL live bets all season long. And and also on top five Tuesday, um I think the plan right now is for it to be tomorrow, but winter meetings are going on. Tomorrow’s the final day of the winter meeting, so stuff could happen. Maris might make a rule five selection tomorrow, although I think we’re probably recording before that. I don’t know. We’ll see. Uh but we reserve the right to push it back even further to talk about more winter meeting stuff. Yeah. Yes. And keep in mind, today is the big day. Tomorrow, everybody leaves. It’s pretty much just the rule five draft. If you guys want some good rule five content, you want to get geared up for that, TJ Stats has a great article, uh that’s where I learned about the catchers that are available, not just Susack. Go check that out. And also our good buddy Arum just uh posted a uh a little article about some Rule Five guys. And I haven’t read it yet, but I’m sure it’s fantastic because he is. So yeah, you guys are teared up for some rule five madness, check those out. Yeah. So check that out over But uh Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. You can check that out over on Just Baseball. Shout out to Arm. Uh so let’s start here with Polo Colby. So it was reported yesterday by Jesse Rogers of ESPN uh that Palano is expected to sign uh before the end of the winter meeting. So maybe today, right? You talked about it like this is kind of the big day. Uh so maybe we’ll be doing another episode tonight. Who knows? Uh that’d be great. Uh but right now it kind of seems like the Mariners and Palano are a little far in part on on you know where the Mariners are kind of standing right now and what Palanco and his agent are asking for. Uh Adam Jude and Ryan Dish of the Seattle Times, they’re down there uh at the winter meetings in Orlando. reported last night uh that Palano’s agent, Ulysus Cabrera, who’s also Julio’s agent, I think that’s important to note here, uh is trying to get Polo three guaranteed years, maybe even a fourth year. And the Mariners are pretty firm on giving him about two years with a vesting or mutual option for a third year. Uh Paulo is also looking for quote more than $12 million. What does that actually mean? Is that $12.5 million? Is this at 13 million? Who knows? But he’s looking for about more than $12 million a year uh for about three guaranteed years, maybe four guaranteed years or at least, you know, an option for a fourth year. Uh and uh it just doesn’t seem like the mayors are comfortable doing that. Uh so there’s been some talk about them pivoting and all that. Maybe we’ll get into that a little later on. Uh, but Colobby, if it if it comes down to it, would you bite the bullet and just give Polo the third guaranteed year? I don’t think so. I wouldn’t be like upset if they did, but you have to remember about Polo is that we can easily look at this and say like, well, 2024 is the outlier. And and it is. I mean, you look at the career of Palanco, 2024 really stands out as a year where like he just fell apart and nothing worked. It happens and and every other year he’s been very good, including last year. But you also have to look at it like this guy’s in his early creeping up to his mid30s. He’s missed a lot of time over the last five, six years, all with lower leg injuries. We know that he doesn’t really provide any defensive value, so he’s really all on the bat. And I have some concerns. you know, he’s not a big bat speed guy either. So, uh, you know, there there are some troubling or there are some concerns about how he might age. And again, when you sack up all the injuries that he’s endured, it’s more and more on top of the pile of like, man, you’re really risking it with three guaranteed years. Four is out of the question. I wouldn’t even give him a fourth year option. Like, that’s not happening. Uh, I think when we talked about this throughout our offseason plan, both on the Patreon show and here on Locked On, that anytime we’ve talked about Polo, we’ve been pretty clear that it’s like it’s two years maybe an option. And I think we were pretty close on the AAV. The article mentions that uh, you know, the agent is looking for more than $12 million a year. Is that 12.1? Is that 18? I don’t know. Uh but I think we were right in that ballpark of between you know I think we were at what 15 million AAV after buyyous and all that like Yeah. Yeah. It was basically two and 30 guaranteed for him. Right. And but like 2 million of that was a buyout. So it was 14 million. I feel like what we came up with what we proposed that’s pretty much as comfortable as I’m as I’m going. uh because there are some, you know, concerning trends with Palanco. And I’m not so much concerned about the production that he’ll give you over the next two or three years, but I am concerned about how often he’ll be on the field and uh you know, those nagging injuries might ultimately end up impacting his performance, especially in year three. So, I again, I wouldn’t be mad if they gave him the third guaranteed year, but I think I’m holding pretty firm at two and an option. Uh mostly because I don’t think anybody else is going to be willing to give him four. Yeah. So I think I’m holding firm with and I I don’t know what the Mariners’s offer is. You know, I think it’s two and and an option and then Well, that’s that’s what was essentially reported was that they have an offer that’s about two years plus an option. And I’m pretty sure that’s from the Mariners. Now, the Pirates keep on striking out, but they keep on telling people how much money they offered these players. And turns out they weren’t even close on either of the players. So, well, and it doesn’t seem like and it doesn’t seem like Panco is just desperate enough to get as much money as possible that he would actually go to Pittsburgh. It was reported this morning um by Ken Rosenthal on The Athletic uh towards the end of his um winter meetings notes article that he put out this morning that Palano, according to sources close to him, prefers comfort and winning, which we already knew. we’ve talked about this uh but that being reiterated on a national scale uh and so it doesn’t seem like he’s just going to jump at the best offer. Um we also have heard that you know the Yankees and uh the Red Sox uh have shown interest but also those teams kind of seem like they have bigger fish to fry right now. So like the Red Sox are, you know, meeting with Pete Alonzo this week, I think, and and that would also impact their interest rumors. And also the Petonzo thing would theoretically impact their interest in in Palanco as well. So Yankees more focused on Bellinger, not Kyle Tucker, which okay. Um because Bellinger is a better fit. You see, it’s al it’s also it’s also weird that they’re interested in Bellinger, not Tucker, blah blah blah blah after Cashman was like, “We’re too left-handed the other day.” So, I don’t know. So, whatever. Uh I I don’t know that Polo would something about Polano in New York or Boston doesn’t really seem like his type of, you know, uh scene, but who knows? We know Polo really does value like you know feeling comfortable and all that which is why or you know pretty decent part of the reason why he came back to Seattle even after the bad year he had and why you know decent part of the reason why he struggled going from Minnesota to Seattle. He’s very comfortable. He wants to be comfortable where he’s going to work every day and there’s an adjustment period there and does Polo want to take that shot if he’s only going to get a two-year contract? Probably not. Uh so I the polo thing is interesting. Again, all indications seem to point to him signing today or tomorrow. Yeah. Uh now we don’t know that for sure. It’s mostly just speculation. But the fact that we think he’s pretty close to signing and that the agent is out here publicly stating these are this is what he wants. Come give it to me kind of makes me seem like they’re circling. They understand what their options are. they feel like they know who the best offer is and this is the last kind of ditch before we we you know sign resign with Seattle. We’re gonna put it out there and see if anybody wants to jump uh Seattle’s offer and maybe they do again. I just I would there’s I would say there’s a 0% chance the Mariners are going for a fourth year. I would say the odds that they give them a thirdyear option 35 40%. I I think ultimately it’s two years is is what the Mariners offer is I think there will be an option. I think there will be an option. Yeah. Um but I think I think it’ll I I think it’ll be an advantageous option for the Mariners. So yeah. Oh yeah. So it’s like a vesting option where like you know he has to crush it in order for it to vest. Yeah. Right. He has to play high bar. he has to play like 260 combined games over the two years and or he’s got to have like,00 played appearances over the two years or or something like that or um you know one thing that might be impacting Polo’s market and why we’re kind of seeing this what typically is seen as an act of desperation from the agent to publicly leak you know how much money you’re looking for and all that. Maybe part of the reason why we’re seeing that is because the Mariners might be making headway on a different player to replace uh Jorge Palanco. So, keep that in mind as well. But, uh you know, I I still think ultimately like I have to put down some cash on on the outcome of this. I think I would put it down on Polo returning to the Mariners. And that’s that’s the not ad, but that’s like the big move the Mariners make uh in for their lineup is they retain Jorge Palano. That that would still be my bet as things sit right now. Uh there’s been, you know, little reports here and there that, you know, the the Mars are a team to watch. The Mars have talked to the Diamondbacks about Marte. Even Adam Jude and Ryan Dish have reported this. That’s happened. So, it’s happened. The Mariners have talked to Catel, they have talked to the Arizona Diamondbacks about Catel Marte. To what degree? Who knows? Who knows? Yeah. Uh but it has been reported that the cost right now, the ask from the Diamondbacks is high and they would like some starting pitching help. And as we’ve talked about in the past, the Mariners don’t really have that to offer in terms of guys that are like on the doorstep, could pitch in a major league rotation tomorrow that would actually like, you know, because there’s Logan. Yeah. Like there’s Logan Evans and Everson Hancock, but that’s not who we’re talking about here. Kate Anderson was further along then sure if Ryan Sloan was further along the shore. Durangelo Sanger was further along the shore, but those guys might be too far off even though they still like at least two of those three might make their debut in 2026. They still might be too far off for the Diamondbacks liking. Yeah, which I don’t know why they would care about that because they’re not going to be competitive in 2026, especially if they trade Catel Marte, but whatever. Uh, so that complicates things and if that is something that the Diamondbacks are going to be firm on, I have doubts the Mariners are probably going to be able to get that done unless they get creative. We get a third team involved. Ty, you seem to be forgetting one insy beansy tiny little bitty detail. Luis Castillo is out there. Boom. starting pitcher, major league ready starting pitching, I think. So, right there. Boom. Yeah. But, uh, yeah, you know, it’s this is kind of weird uh in in terms of like how it’s being reported because nobody’s saying the Mariners are like aggressive or that they’re exchanging names or that they’re deep in talk. Like there’s none of this like there’s no real smoke that like they’re actually trying to get something done, but you can’t find mention of Catel Marte without the Mariners being one of the teams listed as interested or whatnot. And you know just in in one you know 12ish hour period we had Haymon and then we had Morosce and then we had Jude and and Dimish all say like yeah the Marin and to varying degrees, right? It was just well the Mariners are a fit and then Morosi said the Mariners are a team to watch or whatever. And then Adam Jude and and Ryan D said, “The Mariners are doing some work on this, you know, blah blah blah.” And it’s just kind of and that they would uh what what was the quote that they used the from someone from the mayor said that they’re not opposed to doing something big at the winter meeting and that’s what led to the article. Um right, you know, and led to them talking about Catel Marte. So, right, something big might not mean Catel Marte. Fernando Tatis Jr. boom. But, uh, you know, it’s one of those things where it’s like there’s just a lot of like smoke around this idea. And it it’s again, typically when there’s smoke, there’s fire. And remember, by the way, not just from the Mariner side of things. When you look at the Diamondback side of things, they went from we’re not interested in trading Catel Marte, uh, to like, well, I mean, we’ll listen on anybody, but we’re not making calls to like, you know, we’d really like to get some major league starting pitching for Catel Marte. So, the Diamondbacks very clearly are looking to trade Catel Marte. So, you know, they’re trending towards trading Marte, which I think we knew was was a real possibility a few weeks ago. It’s just the Diamondbacks have slowplayed it. And think about how the Diamondbacks did this with, you know, Gino Suarez and Josh Naylor. Well, we want a top 100 prospect. Well, we want somebody major league ready. Well, we want and then all a sudden it turns out it’s like, oh, it only costs a couple relief prospects and Tyler Lleer to get both of these guys. H. So, this is kind of a Diamondbacks pattern, too, right? They set the bar very high and then eventually they slowly whittle their way down until they get the best offer they think they can get and then they’ll make a move like this. Now, Marte’s a little different because he’s not a rental. But, yeah, all indications are they clearly want to trade. Like, this is not how you act if you’re not interested in training. And while he’s not a rental, they are kind of running up against a deadline because once his 10 and five rights kick in at the start of the season, now it becomes even harder for them to trade. Well, in theory, it becomes even harder for them to trade Catel. Now, it’s possible that even with a full no trade clause, Catel is like, “Yeah, I just want to get the hell out of Arizona, so wherever you’re willing to trade me to, I’ll just take it.” But he could also just make life hard on on the Diamondbacks if he feels like it. Yeah. Again, the Marte thing is very weird because there are a lot of like like in isolated incidents, we wouldn’t think too much of this uh in terms of like the Mariners being linked to Marte, but they just kind of keep stacking on top of each other. And it just feels like this is either something that’s being fed either from the Mariners or the Diamondbacks. Now, both teams have reasons to, you know, push this narrative along. Obviously, the Mariners, one of the teams that could absolutely afford Catel Marte if they so choose. So, that would help the Diamondbacks in theory. And obviously, the Mariners really, they have Polo that they’re trying to get done. And they want to put pressure on him and his camp to sign a deal so they could leak that, hey, we’re doing this with Marte. And maybe that’s what it is. Maybe ultimately just both of these. Guess what? Catel Marte second baseman/DH who’s a switched hitter like very similar profile like right. So it’s one of those things where it’s like this very easily could just be two teams benefiting from this idea that they’re working together to maybe trade this star player and so they’re not going to come out and and squash it, right? There’s no reason for them to step on it because it’s benefiting them, both of them at the same time. And that could just be what this is. Like, don’t get me wrong, but there’s just a lot of smoke around the idea here. And uh I I think it’s it’s possible. I think it’s highly unlikely. Like, if I had to guess where Marte is going to go, I think ultimately he’s going to end up somewhere like Boston just because they have to, they have early. They they have the young pitching that Yeah. the Diamondbacks apparently want. Those guys are just half a year to a full year ahead of where Anderson and uh Sanja are right now. So, you know, is it possible? Could the Mariners maybe trade Bryce Miller in this deal and something else? Maybe. But then again, they have to go out and replace those guys. We talk about this all the time. Uh and that’s going to be tough to do. So, uh, ultimately I think Boston should probably be considered the favorite, uh, for Marte, but if Boston has their heart set on, you know, Pete Alonzo, and that’s going to take them that’s going to take a while, you just kind of start to run out of teams and and Toronto, maybe Toronto, but what are they going to trade you Savage? Is is Ricky Tidman really the guy that that they’re going to build a package around for? Like, you just kind of start to run out of these teams pretty quick. And Seattle has the means. They have the opportunity. They’re in their window. It’s just do they have the specific package that the Diamondbacks are looking for. And as it’s being reported right now, I don’t think they quite do. I think it’s close, but I don’t think they do. And maybe they get there by overpaying on the back end a little bit. Or maybe they get there because Arizona’s just like, “Look, ultimately we want the highest upside starting pitching we can get. So we’ll take a guy who’s three months behind.” Like, I don’t know, maybe the Diamondbacks really like Sanger. probably not, but maybe they do, you know, and you know, keep in mind the Mariners and the Diamondbacks very familiar with each other in their valuations of players. So, um, I don’t think this is the type of deal that would need, you know, six weeks of of negotiation to get done. I think if the Mariners really decided that yes, we’re interested in this, they would know within a matter of a week or two whether or not they had any shot of getting Marte done. So, we’ll see. But uh it it is enough, you know, there are enough whispers, there is enough smoke that it’s impossible to ignore the tell Marte idea whether you like it or not. So I don’t think the off the- field stuff is that big of a deal. I’ll preface by saying that personally I don’t have really any sort of issue with it and I don’t really see it as much of a red flag, but it continues to be reported. any any article that gets put out right now about Catel Marte includes multiple paragraphs detailing, you know, what happened this summer. Diamondbacks, you know, some Diamondbacks players uh were upset with him because he just kind of went away for a few days after his home was burglarized. Uh which seems like a normal response to me, but okay. Yeah. Is that actually going to be a real hangup for them? I don’t think it should be, but it’s possible that it could be for them. Um, and obviously, you know, clubhouse fit and all that, that’s a big part of player acquisition for the Mayers. They have really really taken that into account, especially over the last couple of years after they’ve been burned by guys like Jesse Winker and and what have you. So, um, they’ve made exceptions, like don’t get me wrong, they have made exceptions in the past. I think this is another thing because I just I really don’t think it’s that big of a deal uh that they should, you know, make an exception for. But um I do wonder if maybe that causes a hangup here for the Mariners as well. And they’re just and that leads to, you know, it wouldn’t be the main reason, but it would just be another, you know, we don’t want to add this contract. We don’t want to pay the prospect capital on top of adding the contract. This is one of those things where you just kind of have to trust the Mariners’s judgment on this. Yeah. Uh because we just don’t have nearly as much info or insight into that as as they would. So, we’ll see if anything happens again. Ultimately, I think Polo is is brought back and I I think Marte is probably traded somewhere else probably in the American League. Um, just because the Mariners, while I think they could put together a very competitive package and arguably the best package that anybody will give from Marte, if the Diamondbacks are dead set on getting young major league ready or major in the major league starting pitching, the Mariners are just about, you know, in July this might be a different story. Yeah, but right now they’re just not quite there yet. All right, coming up, I’m going to indulge Colby about this Padre stuff and then we’re going to talk about some relievers in just a moment. So again, according to Adam Jude and Ryan Debish, the Mariners are not opposed to doing quote unquote something big at the winter meetings. And it was reported last night that the Padres’s are potentially working on a deal that would rival the Juan Sodto deal that landed them what four major leaguers. Michael King, Johnny Bridto, Randy Vasquez, I believe, and Kylo Gashioa as well as Thorp. Yeah. And they flipped Thorp and did they? Yeah. Uh, so there you go. So you you put out a tweet that we were going to talk about this. So I mean, you know, we owe it to the people to actually follow through on that. Even though I do not do our best, Joan Calamezo. Yeah. All right. This is this is your segment, so you you know spew your your conspiracy theories. Are the Mariners getting ready to trade George Kirby and Randy Rose Arena? I say yes. So it’s true. Sticker of approval. Boom. John Calamezo. Uh no, it’s Look, are the Mariners going to trade for Fernando Tatis Jr.? No. No. No. Should they? Yeah. You know, yeah. Yeah, probably. Uh, what’s really fun about this is, you know, a first of all, the Mariners and the Padres’s making a big trade together. That never happens. Um, so you could just cross it off right there. No, to be fair, it hasn’t happened for a while. Well, I mean, after Dotto destroyed Prell finally wised up. Yeah. Yeah. But yeah, I mean you start to look at it and you go, “Okay, well, who what player could rival such an acquisition and it’s you would think it’s Tatis Jr. since he’s making money and we know the Padres’s want to, you know, shed both, you know, short-term and long-term salary off their books, but then this morning you have Mark Feinstand say that this big player could end up being Jackson Merrill, which I mean, holy smokes, that’d be stupid, but also incredible uh content.” Um, so but you know, you kind of look at you want to have some fun like, okay, if if they’re trying to get like the Juan Sodto package, essentially the Padres’s are trying to move long-term salary off of their books but maintain the ability to compete in the National League West. Uh, so that’s what the Wanoto thing was, right? They got Michael King. They got two years of Michael King. They got well, it was up to three years of Hagashi, but he’s a backup catcher, so whatever. Uh it was Drew Thorp, who at the time was top 70ish prospect, 50 to 70, somewhere in that range. Uh and then a couple relievers that had some starting experience. So like they they were able to fill out their their roster uh with major league talent in this trade. And then obviously they flipped Thorp as part of the Dylan CE trade, blah blah blah. So looking for major leaguers and they’re looking for prospects close to the major leagues. Does Seattle have that? Yes. Is it smart of them to trade it for one player? Probably not. Um but but what if that one player is Fernando Tatis Jr.? I mean Fernando Tati Jr. is really good. Yeah. Uh so I don’t know. Uh, but the fun thing here is to try and build your own Juan Sodoto trade package. Specifically, the one where they traded away Juan Sto, not the one where they, you know, acquired Juan because it seems very clear that the Padres’s want major league talent. Uh, now again, this is just one report, but it is, I believe, originated from Dennis Lynn, who is like the Ryan Divish of the Padres’s. So, yeah, uh, it’s a very reliable source there. Is it likely going to happen? I don’t know. Probably not. But is Pller afraid to make big moves? Is Pller afraid to, you know, make moves that people don’t like and and people question whether or not they’re smart? No. Prell is the most aggressive GM in baseball. Uh and so I mean, will will it happen? I think it actually will. Uh will it will will it be with the Mariners? Absolutely not. I don’t know. I don’t know. George Kirby and Randy Rose Arena for Fernando Tatis. I am I am likelier to start my own team from scratch, become the 31st Major League Baseball team and acquire Fernando Tatis Jr. than the Seattle Mariners are. And if the Mariners acquire Fernando Tatis Jr., are you getting the jersey tatted on your back? Sure. So yeah, I’m just saying, you know, could you get could you do Randy Rosarena, George Kirby, Bazardo, and like Sanja for Tatis and uh I don’t know. Um who’s somebody else making money on that team? Like Tatis and and Pavda, you know, I love Nick Pavda. This has really been a long con for me to get Nick Pavda. That’s the real prize for you. Yeah, that’s the real prize is Nick Faveta. Um, but yeah, I mean, Ty, let me ask you this. Like, forget will it happen? Would you rather trade for Jackson Merrill or Fernando Tatis Jr.? Uh, Tatis. I don’t Merryill sign like uh I don’t know. Pretty sure he signed like a a team friendly extension, but maybe not. So if if you tr if you traded for Jackson Merrill, I would move him back to the infield. Honestly, I I it’s going to sound crazy. I’d probably put him in center or move Julio to right or left. Um Julio’s better than Mel. Well, I know that that’s not what it’s about, though. It’s about keeping Julio as healthy as possible. And obviously center field is much more physically taxing than right field or left field. Um but yeah, anyways, the Padres’s might be big game hunting. It’s certainly, you know, a fun conversation to have. Uh is Tatis Jr. or Jackson Merrell likely to be Mariners? Of course not. They’re like they’re not they’re most likely to be Padres’s next year by a mile. But Pller is crazy enough to do these things. We know he is. He traded all those prospects for a year and a half of Sodto and then he flipped Sodto and he got, you know, Michael King and he completely rebuilt his rotation out of that trade and and you know, he is aggressive. He traded one of the best prospects in baseball for a reliever. I mean, it’s one of those things where Prell will be aggressive. He will make moves like this. And the Padres’s are kind of in a situation where they’re desperate enough to make moves like this because they know that they’re in trouble financially. Uh, but they’re also not going to just wave the white flag and and, you know, trade these guys for prospects. They want major league talent. So, this is all, you know, circling up to be something big. And I just hope, you know, if you’re trading for Nano Tatis Jr., uh, that ends up being what they’re doing. I hope it’s not to the Blue Jays or the Red Sox or the Rangers or something like that. Like, yeah, the Rangers, you know, throw Jack Lighter out there. Maybe Evan Carter or Wyatt Langford. I mean, things can get dicey real fast, but yeah. Yeah, it it’s fun to speculate. Let us know what your uh you know, Juan Stoesque trade package would be for Fernando Tatis Jr. And just so you guys know, Logan Evans, he ain’t doing nothing in this trade. Uh I mean, as like a fourth piece, sure. Um maybe a fifth piece. So, thank you for wasting what, eight minutes of of my life in our listeners lives. First of all, talking about something more real. Did you love that? Let us know in the comments below. Did you love that? When you see the number of Fernando Tatis Jr. fanfiction Friday trades we get, we’ll see who’s laughing. Yeah, that’s what I’m scared of actually. That’s what I was worried about. You could have engaged more and given the people more answers, but you decided to just be Mr. Negative Nelly. Moving on. Jerry Dotto talked about relievers last night at the winter meetings. Uh the Mariners are still looking to add uh more bullpen help even after adding Jose Ferrer. Uh which was to be expected. Uh Justin Hollander at the start of the offseason said that they would like to add two bullpin arms. Um one of them being a lefty. Well, there you go. They checked off that box with Ferrer. Jerry specifically mentioned veteran free agents. So, what price point does that potentially land in? Who knows? Maybe that’s something we’ll explore a little bit more whenever I do my top five Tuesday because I did land on reliever targets. So, I talk about that a little bit more. But, uh, where would you like to see them go, especially if it’s a free agent veteran reliever? Yeah, you know, it’s pretty interesting. in the article pretty much exclusively made it sound like they’re shopping in free agency for the second reliever. They’re not really looking at the trade market. Now, obviously, we know they will and they probably have been as well, but uh yeah, it did seem to be a heavy um indication that the second reliever is probably going to come out of free agency. And I think we kind of know what what tier they’re shopping at because we know that, you know, Phil Mton was a player that they went after and he was in the 78 million bucket. So they’re certainly not going to I mean obviously Diaz signed this morning for 23 million a year. That’s they were never going to shop there. Uh I kind of doubt they’re shopping in the 15 the you know 12 to$15 million bucket which I think would be the Pete Fairbanks uh you know that type of realm. Uh maybe Luke Weaver is in that area as well. I kind of doubt they’d be shopping there. So, I think it’s the tier below that. I I think it is the the Shawn Armstrongs. I do think it is, you know, it is the Phil Maton types. So, um I think Tyler Rogers is probably going to be a little too expensive. Or is it Taylor? I always get them mixed up. It’s Tyler. Taylor’s the lefty. The lefty. Yeah. So, I think he’s probably going to be a little too expensive. He might get a third year. And I kind of doubt the Mariners are going to go three years on any reliever. So, I think that probably eliminates Fairbanks as well, though. Maybe not. You know, again, the the raise are very good and they just decided not to even try to trade Fairbanks at one year and 11 million. So, maybe they know the value of Fairbanks better than we do. But, um, yeah, I think it’s not going to be the Fairbanks Weaver group. I think it’s going to be the group below that. Uh, and I think the the clue there is that Philon was one of their targets and he got, you know, two years at about $15 million. So, yeah. Yep. So maybe like they’re willing to go into like the 7 million per range, seven and a half million per go a bit more because Ferrer is cheap. Yeah, they didn’t spend any money on Ferrer, right? You know, they they they checked off one of their biggest items on their to-do list without spending any money to do it. So yeah. Um, and you know, if they and let’s say that they um, you know, they lose out on Palanco and they end up pivoting into someone like Brennan Donovan who’s only projected to make like $5.4 million. Like they could legit like go spend some money on a reliever if they wanted to. Uh, so yeah, like obviously that, you know, Edwin Diaz just signed so obviously they’re not going to do that or anything like that. like they’re not going to go after Robert Suarez, don’t get me wrong, but maybe maybe they would be willing to pay like 10 plus mil for a couple years of Tyler Rogers or Pete Fairbanks. I think Weaver is the interesting guy to watch here. Yeah, they love him. I think they do. And not again, I’m sure we’ll get more in the weeds on names tomorrow unless the Mariners do something that necessitates us pushing, you know. And by the way, remember guys, no episode on Thursday. Um yeah, but Weaver is interesting because he kind of throws straight over the top which is unique from this bullpen and he is forcing change up as his two primary pitches which is very unique from the rest of this bullpen. Uh is Weaver, you know, going to get he didn’t have as good of a year in 25 as he did in 24, but still pretty good. Is he going to get three years at 12 to 15 million? Well, you’re probably out. But is it possible he’s, you know, drops down into the 2 and 18 to 20 range? Yeah, I think it’s probably possible. And at that point, are the Mariners interested since they just, you know, didn’t have to spend money to get their other bullpin arm? Maybe. Maybe. And also, the kind of thing that was lingering out there at the beginning of of the winter is, you know, our teams interested in Weaver converting to the rotation again. And we haven’t really heard any updates on that. So, maybe it’s just a no-go for him. But I think Weaver is kind of the X-factor there. Just kind of floating around out there. Yeah. Um behind behind him though, like Sean Armstrong, you know, guys that might land more in that Phil Maton range, you know. Um maybe Finnegan. Is Finnegan healthy? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. He I mean he was he was healthy in the DS. I don’t know if anything happened during the DS, but uh Finnegan Yeah. Uh yeah. Then again, Armstrong. Um, I think it’s I think it’s that range. Yeah. And you know, again, like with someone like Armstrong or Weaver, the Mars have had them before, so you know that they at least like them to a certain degree. I think they love Luke Weaver. I think they’re they probably kicked themselves over letting him go as early as they did and, you know, watching him do what he wound up doing in in New York. So, yeah. But um so yeah, keep an eye on those guys. But uh yeah, it’s possible they they still might make a pretty significant ad to the bullpen, which would be great. Like if they have six legit dudes, you know, in in their bullpen, you know, varying from dude to dog to to daddy even, uh that would be great. Yeah. I mean, the Mariners probably think they already have like five daddies, so I don’t know if they’re looking at a six, but I’m telling you, they really only have one or two. Sure. So, so someone I think it was Claire in our comments the other day said uh they need a you know dude to dog to daddy like ratio explained post haste. Yeah, somebody had mentioned that scale on our Patreon which is why we’re using it. Yeah, I could do that. Uh Munos is a daddy. Mhm. I would say Bazardo is a dog. Yeah. D A WG and Vargas is a dude. Vargas is a dude like capital D dude. Maybe a capital U dude, an um lot dude. Sure. Maybe. Maybe. I you know I think Munos and and Brash are daddies. Like Spire is right on the verge of becoming a daddy, but I’ll still go Spy is a daddy. No, Spy. Okay, that’s fine. I’m I’m not objecting to that. Uh, I think Bazardo, if he does what he did this year, next year, he’s definitely uh going to be promoted to daddy. Uh, but right now, I’d say he’s a dog. Uh, Ferrer. I think Ferrer is a dog. I think he’s a dog. There there’s daddy upside there, but I think he’s a dog. Uh, but I think he’s like closer to dude, capital Dude, than daddy right now, but that could flip pretty quick. Uh, the stuff is definitely there to to jump up a level. Um, and then who else is in this bowl? Like, yeah, I think Vargas is a dude. Um, Hancock is lowercase everything. Uh, dude, Caleb Ferguson’s not here anymore, otherwise he’d be a dude. Like, yeah, you guys get like, yeah, the the daddy is who you want to come in and clean up the mess. M the dog is somebody you just you trust and he’s going to battle through and he’s going to throw up a zero and the dude is just kind of there, you know, eat up some innings, not let things get too far out of hand. Trent Thornton was mostly a dude, a capital D dude, though. Uh yeah. So yeah, even in our little scale, there’s capital Dude and there’s lowercase Dude. Uh so yeah. All right. 1. Polanco is a bad risk at ~$40 mil for 3 years. I'm not sure he's a good risk at $10 mil per for 2 years. I love him but not enough. If choosing between him and any of Marte, Donovan, or Lowe I'd choose one if the others for sure.

Edit…I don't like seeing you kids fighting on screen. Get it together.

  2. I think the scale should be

    Daddy>DAWG>Dude>Guy

To many variables in the dude category. Every team has some dudes in the pen. The good teams limit the dudes but eliminate the guys

  3. Luis Castillo, leo Rivas, Dom Canzone, Cole Young, Michael Arroyo, Jonny Farmello, Felnin Celesten, and Jurangelo Cinjtje to Padres

Tatis & $60m, Croenenworth, and Estrada to Mariners
