Schwarber offer was 4/$125mil. Even higher AAV than the Phillies.

  1. Yeah. Tough to really complain on this one but our fans will!

It stinks and I know the challenges of the pirates signing FA’s, but this one there really is no way to blame them

Edit: I mean I get the frustration, but I just wish we could have discussions on here without it turning into a “wahhhhh button is cheap”

They are clearly trying here, and if we get to the end of the offseason and they sign no one of note bitch away. But it’s December ninth, they are throwing around unheard of for then numbers, can we let this play out please. These threads all become insufferable with the “you care more about nutting’s wallet than winning” and can’t have a discussion of the merits of why a 5 year contract to schwarber might be a bad idea

  2. The alleged offers beyond the deal the Phillies signed him were 5×150 from Baltimore and 5×125 from Cincy. Imagine how pissed you’d be as a Reds fan in this situation, Schwarber grew up right outside of Cincinnati and they were willing to go 5 years for him, but they were just being too cheap about it.

  3. I mean, they genuinely did try. By all measurements that’s a fair offer, even slight overpay. We were never gonna outbid Philly and I’m not convinced we should have anyways.

    Onto Alonso.

Edit: Again, the people crying saying “He would never accept that” are honestly missing the point. Imagine we enter a bidding war with Philadelphia, as they blindly wanted. Then we’re stuck paying an aging DH well over 30mil/yr for the next half decade. Yikes bro.

It was a realistic, respectable offer. Period.

  4. I appreciate that an offer was made, but this can’t be the only thing they do, we need more than a token attempt.

  5. That is an overpay for Schwarber at this point in his career, though if the Pirates had ended up with, say, two seasons of near-peak performance, one that was below career norms but still pretty decent, and one poor season at the end of the contract, I could live it given the likely benefits in the meantime.

Otherwise I still say this kind of money would be better spent bringing in two or even (with a few more shekels) three better than average bats instead of one very good bat who is at the back end of his prime years right now, let alone two to three years from now. So I say, sign the Japanese third baseman and a starting left fielder, add in two better than average bullpen arms, and bring up Griffin at midseason.

Do all that and we’re cooking with gas.

  6. Hahaha so a perennial last place team offers you less years and less total money? What a competitive offer aghahahahah. The Pirates have to overpay to land anyone this good. That offer may as well have been $0

  7. I’D turn right around and and give a large chunk of that money to Konner and see if we can’t keep him there for a while.

  8. I mean, the AAV was 1.25 million more per year. Not nothing, but not really worth forgoing another $25 million over and uprooting your life.

Glad we made a truly competitive offer, but the Phillies offer was better. Can’t begrudge it, nothing but the best for Schwarber (though Philly itself can go to hell) and for once I’m not pissed at Cherington

  9. As someone who lives in the Philly area, his heart is in Philly. He got emotional in the post game after the Phillies were eliminated just talking about the possibility of leaving the Phillies organization.

  10. I mean saying aav is higher is true but in no way is 4/$125 better than 5/$150. Anybody with a brain takes the latter every day.

  11. Take whatever offer players sign for, add about $5 mil per year / an extra year and that’s what it would take for someone to come to the pirates over a contender. You’re going to have to overpay or be happy with the scraps and that you didn’t overpay.

  12. He was never coming here. It was all a fugazi otherwise they would be spending that money on other players.

  13. More money is nice, but I’m sure Kyle Schwarber would rather go to an organization with a winning track record rather than risk the rebuild or the fringe playoff team. Also going to need a lot more than Schwarber to push the Pirates over the hump, let alone the .500 hump.

  14. Great. So, go 6 years 187.50 mill to polar bear. Report is mets don’t want to go past 3 years.

  15. The good thing about this offer being public is that it might signal to other free agents that they might be making some legitimate offers.

  16. I’d rather have Alonso or Bichette. In fact, I’d like to sign Alonso and Bichette. Let’s try to win something this year.

  17. “Per a source”

First, ignore AAV in this case because it’s probably Schwarber’s last contract. He’s now guaranteed $150m for the rest of his baseball career, as opposed to $125m.

Second, the “source” could be affiliated either with the team or the agent. It’s obviously in the team’s best interest to make themselves look as good as possible by inflating their number. It’s also in the agent’s best interest to show the numbers he turned down for his client… and got a bigger number for him.

I believe this number less than I ever believed Mexico was going to pay for the wall.

  18. Who cares? They didn’t sign him. Also, the Phillies gave him $25 million more with the extra year. So the higher AAV doesn’t mean a whole lot unless they offered him 5 years.

  19. Schwarber had ZERO intention to leave the Phillies. That’s where he wants to be. He got an understanding of his market value and got the fair deal from the team he WANTS to play for. If leaving Philadelphia was even a thought, this deal wouldn’t have been signed so early in FA.
