Devin Williams reacts to the departure of Edwin Diaz from the Mets | Mets Hot Stove

Thanks so much for taking a few minutes and and for driving up here for this. You know, you are somebody that obviously has had so much success in your career and so much interest on the free agent market. What was it about the Mets in particular that you felt made it the right fit? Um I mean, you know, like I had said before, they they want to win, you know. Um that’s always a good thing. They’re committed to, you know, putting a good product on the field. Um and you know, really they were they were pretty aggressive from the get-go. So, you know, it’s always good to go somewhere where you want it. I know that it’s not official yet the Edwin Diaz news and and you may not be able to comment on it, but just in general, you’ve had a lot of success in multiple roles. Eighth inning setup guy, closing, is there any difference in mentality, one versus the other when you’re out there? I’ve never really looked at it like that, you know. Um I feel like I get this question a lot, but but the thing is, you know, the runs count the same in the eighth inning as they do in the ninth, right? Um, so yeah, for me I’ve I’ve always looked at it as, you know, it’s the same job. You’re going out there to get three outs or, you know, whatever it may be. Three outs, five outs, whatever they need you to do. Hey Devin, as a guy that played in New York and a lot of other places, um, I know there’s a bit of a learning curve in New York and you went through ups and downs last year. You came through it really well at the end of the year. Do you feel like coming into this season that learning curve is behind you and you’re ready to kind of hit the ground running as a New York Met and the New York piece is kind of behind you? Yeah, I mean I feel, you know, like I’m comfortable in the city. I know how how I’m going to get around, you know, I I know what it’s going to be like, what the expectations are. Um, which is something that I I really was, you know, I had no idea coming into last season. uh we get here or we get to New York a day before we’re playing and like all right go play you know and like I remember after opening day I was trying to figure out how I was going to get home that night so yeah I’ve got all that figured out you know we’re good we’re comfortable ready to go Deon I I would like your take on the most solid Liverpool situation but this is a baseball show I’m sure you have a good one so I’m going to ask you about your cutter instead and ask you the other one offset uh you I had a pleasure watching you pitch Last year for the Yankees, you weren’t really throwing much of that cutter that we’d seen be effective for you in some years with the Brewers. Is that a pitch uh that you want to continue to develop and work back kind of into your mix as you as you had it a few years earlier? Where you at with that right now? Yeah. Um you know, it’s something I’ve really made a concerted effort on, you know, over the past three years and it’s it’s gone up and down in my confidence in it, but I think it’s something that I have to, you know, lean into now in order for me to take that next step. Y um so yeah, I mean I you know I jumped in with both feet and um I’m sure you’re going to see it a lot more this year. Yeah. Speaking of that, speaking of the pitch and the selection of pitches, you’ve talked a little bit about the gyro slider. First of all, for the folks at home, give us a your definition of what the gyro slider is cuz compared to a normal slider. I think I know what it means. But then additionally, is it something that you think you want to deploy as a regular pitch or is it something that you’re going to have and see if it develops before you use it in game situations? Um, I mean, it is it’s just a slider, right? Um, the gyro sliders, we call it that because of where it plots on the chart. Um, but yeah, it’s something, you know, I just want to have in my back pocket. Um, you know, if I feel the situation calls for it, I want to be comfortable enough to whip it out. You know, Devin, talk about the cutter, we talk about the slider, but we know that that the air bender, the change up is what you’re known for. And I don’t want to go a full first interview with you without asking you about it. What is it about that pitch, the way you throw it, the way that that your wrist moves, whatever you are able to do to manipulate that baseball that makes that pitch such a unique pitch in the game? I think it’s just like you said, it’s unique, right? It’s something that you don’t really see. Um guys don’t, you know, they don’t see that pitch visually coming out of a righthander’s hand. Um yeah, I think that’s that’s really it. That’s the thing right there. There’s a few guys that can get close to it and they have really good change ups, but um yeah, with the this the movement and the spin rate, like how sharp it can be at times. Um there’s not a lot of guys that can replicate that. All right. Finally, before we let you go, have you you talked to any of your new teammates or maybe some of your old ones like a Tyrone Taylor since you said? Yeah. Yeah, Tyrone was the first guy to text me. I think he texted me as soon as as soon as the news was out there. Um I mean, aside from him, there’s Mania’s reached out, Lindor reached out, uh Mentor, you know, couple of guys. Great. All right. Well, listen, uh, we appreciate you spending some time with us, driving up here to to join us on set, and we look forward to watching your first year in Queens. Thanks so much. Thanks for having me. Thanks.

  1. Diaz was a gem but clearly didn't think there was a ring in his short future w/ the Mets. 3mil isn't worth it.

Nasty divorce, both parties at fault. Losers are the Mets fandom…another depressing reality to this dysfunctional franchise.

  2. It’s on management of retain talent. Diaz is the best at what he does. Letting him leave is on management. If they do their job right they figure out a way to sign him regardless of what he wants to do.

  3. I like this guy. He has humility and I think he is going to do very good with the Mets. This guy can pitch. He will definitely have success again. Everyone has bad outings. Stay tuned.

  4. New York Used to Play with Puerto Ricans, Look the Yankees from the 90's, / Now the Dodgers are playing Smart , with Kike/ Diaz & Next Season I heard they will go for Jose Berrios & Javier Baez, WATCH!!! , Keep Building around Dominicans New York πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

  5. I think Williams has four pitches… Diaz only has two with an occasional curve every 3 months. But man he could do a lot with those two pitches.
