Former Mets closer Edwin Diaz caught off guard by Devin Williams acquisition per Passan

  1. People lapping up what the Mets PR had to say when they did damage control but disregarding what Passan had to say regarding Diaz is just disingenuous.

Being kept in the loop is courtesy for a guy like Diaz. Signing an elite reliever and prior to that offering diaz 3 years expecting he wouldn’t have offers is strange. The Mets were applauded for their communication a year ago. It didn’t appear to be the case here.

Let’s not forget that Diaz didn’t even go to free agency after 2022. The truth lies in between what the Mets and Diaz’s camp is spinning. If the Mets offered 5 years, Diaz is still here.

EDIT: The circle jerk is certainly amusing. Nice to see that the Mets subreddit downvotes anyone who doesn’t agree with the company line.

  2. Fuck your trumpets. Mets aren’t obligated to tell an unsigned FA shit. Can you imagine if the Mets leaked some team planning and data to Diaz and he signed with LA anyway but can now offer Mets analytics data? FOH.

  3. He was literally not under contract I don’t even know if the Mets would have been allowed to contact him if they wanted to.

  4. If it was anyone other than Passan, I’d call bs because of how ridiculous it is. In what world do you get upset when a team signs another high quality player? He clearly wasn’t intended to replace Diaz. Get over yourself

  5. Dude made up his mind before free agency started and he wanted out. He never wanted to come back to the Mets.

  6. Sounds like another Freddie Freeman scenario. That being said, I’m sure Diaz fantasized that the Dodgers would want him, and when that happened he couldn’t resist the lure of a superteam. Can’t really blame him for that

  7. Fucking ridiculous lol. Why should he be notified? Why would he care? It’s not like Williams was taking his job.

  8. If true, this is really odd. The Mets have no obligation to give one free agent a heads up that they’re signing another free agent that plays the same position.

Also, if this is him trying to say “Well they signed another closer, so they moved on” the fact that it was made public immediately after Devin Williams signed that the Mets were still interested in bringing Díaz back blows holes all in that argument.

Dude, you wanted to go to LA. It’s whatever. No point in trying to make it out like it wasn’t your decision.

  9. Wouldn’t it be kind of an security issue for someone who is technically not part of the org to have info on negotiations on other players?

  10. So he’s moving across the country to play for LA for the same amount of money because he’s upset that Stearns didn’t give a heads up about signing another player?

    F off, 🎺 boy.

  11. And the leak war continues lol. I get Diaz’s attempt here but kinda just makes him look like a fragile diva.  He was looking to ring chase and the dodgers hit his number so he left. That’s fine. We don’t need the excuses and justifications.

  12. We’ve lost Helsley Rogers and he opted out but wanted a heads up after one bullpen signing lmaoo

  13. Bro just say you wanted to win and you signed with the best team out there to get you there. Signing devin Williams is a non factor.

  14. Wasn’t it quoted by Stearns that they wanted Diaz back during the Williams’ press conference? Devin he went on to say he wouldn’t mind being the setup man for Diaz. Smh, mannn Diaz soft as baby turds for getting in his feelings

  15. Whyyy wouldn’t they consult Diaz to tell him their plans for relief? He probably thought they were trying to replace him. Bonehead move

  16. Rightfully so. Mets do an awful job treating their players who deserve respect by the organization.

  17. I love Diaz but he’s not the type of player that management needs to run moves through tbh.

Also have some security in yourself brother… you were absolutely filthy last year and Devin wasn’t

  18. Under a microscope this looks like a big deal but ultimately i still think it came down to losing Hef and the endorsement from his brother.

We aquired and then let another teams closer go (Helsley) it makes sense that we’d want to try to refill that role.

  19. Ummm there’s way more competition for the closers role in LAD. I guess he’s ok with those guys 🤡

  20. Stearns said over and over that they wanted Diaz back.
No reason for Diaz, who is supposed to be a grown ass man, to feel hurt that they signed another relief pitcher for the back of the pen without calling him first.
This is just the type of BS nonsense we don’t need to hear.

Daiz made the decision to become a free agent.
He also made the decision to take the Dodgers offer without giving Stearns a chance to make a second offer, even after Mets told him they had wiggle room when they gave him their offer, and he never gave them another bite.

If you want to say you went the Dodgers because they are a better team and you have a better chance at winning rings there over the next three years – then hey, I don’t begrudge anyone that right. Totally get it.

But don’t hand me this hurt feelings little boy BS about someone needing to call you to tell you ( a free agent ), that they signed another arm. If you are that mentally soft that you’d leave over that, then you need to leave. You address that with a five minute chat on the phone, not with signing with another team.
Just another BS excuse in my view.

  21. Sounds like he wanted any reason to leave with all of the rumors out there. I’m not hopping on the Stearns hate here, Diaz didn’t give a fuck about the Mets and Mets fans so he can go fuck off in LA.

  22. This is bs. He’s not on the mets. He has no right to know who they are signing and if he did he should be happy that we got an 8th inning setup guy whuch would help him.

  23. “I’m mad the front office didn’t tell me they were strengthening the bullpen to make us better”

  24. So he didn’t want a stronger, deeper bullpen around him? He was still the closer

He just wanted to go ring chasing with the frontrunners

  25. That’s why we need Alonso back. So he can give Diaz the Devin Williams treatment in the next NLCS.

  26. I dont blame players on the Mets for being annoyed that Juan Soto got nearly a billion dollars, no questions asked and other guys are being told “no” over a few million. Sevy wanted to come back. He was willing to take less than what the As offered him, but they were like, “Will you take 17 a year instead of 20 million?” And he told Stearns to kick rocks
